Hey, neighbor 👋 (Welcome / Introductions)

First off, thanks for being here. With new people joining the subreddit every so often, I thought it might be a good time to start a welcome wagon — it's great to meet you!

Share a little bit about yourself, where you're from, what gets you excited, what you feel is important, and how you came to live/work/join us here. However much you're comfortable with. No pressure.

And hey, don't feel limited by my questions; go above and beyond if you like. In such a tight-knit community as St. Albans, it's refreshing to meet new people. And the people you do meet, well... in my experience, they'll surprise you more often than not!

One last question (and this is just me being curious): What are you hoping to see here in the sub? If you have any ideas, drop a comment or let a mod know — we're always up for making this sub a more useful space for everyone.

💬 Discussion Vote November 3rd

In 1 week we vote in the mid term elections for local and national candidates. This is one of the most consequential elections in recent memory. Since my childhood in the 1960s, The Republican Party has been the party of denying and taking away from the American people. It was Democrats who got us Social Security, Labor rights, Medicare/Medicaid and the Civil Rights Act. Democrats got us the Voting Rights Act, Inflation Reduction Act, Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) and so many others. As a group, Republicans have consistently pushed against these initiatives to the detriment of the American people.

Now we have the opportunity to usher in a new era of supporting Vermonters with the best group of Democrat candidates we have ever had at the state level. Amanda Janoo, Molly Gray, Greg Rainville, Alexander Bobella, Pam McCarthy, Suzy Kenyon, Zach Sheffler, Caroline Bright, Julie Filiberti, Carmela Fayette and Tamar Bouchard. I believe these people will fix the root causes that make Vermont unaffordable and address the housing crunch. We need people who are working for every citizen in Vermont. The humanity of a society is measured by how they care for those who have the least. Let's show the rest of the country what can be done when you get the right people enacting the right policies. Please vote for your Democrat candidates November 3rd.

📅 Event Burlington Baroque returns to St Albans on October 30th!

Post image
10 Upvotes

A most delightful return to St Albans, if you missed the last presentation in March, do attend this time - there is nothing happening like this in St Albans!

Requiem For A King features music by Jean Gilles and Marc-Antoine Charpentier. Two composers, well known 1700s France but perhaps novel to your knowledge. they shouldn’t be - they were massively popular in their time for good reason: uplifting and memorable moments, pieces you will listen to and then go search to hear again to find the many treasures nestled into the fabric of the piece.

See below for background on this lovely program. And better yet: come see the program yourself.
——

REQUIEM FOR A KING – Music of Jean Gilles and Marc-Antoine Charpentier

Friday, October 30th and Sunday, November 1st, 2026

www.burlingtonbaroque.org

Burlington Baroque presents the rediscovered Funeral Requiem by Jean Gilles (1668 - 1705) featuring Artists-in-Residence L’Harmonie des saisons Baroque Orchestra and the Burlington Baroque Festival Singers, directed by Eric Milnes.

Friday, October 30th, 7:30 p.m.

Holy Angels Catholic Church, St. Albans, Vermont

Sunday, November 1st, 4:00 p.m.

College Street Congregational Church, Burlington, Vermont

Jean Gilles’ Messe des Morts, the most frequently performed requiem in 18th-century France, will receive its regional premiere in these two upcoming performances. Performed at official funeral observances, including services for Jean-Philippe Rameau in 1764 and Louis XV in 1774, the work entered the repertoire of the Concert Spirituel in 1750. Forgotten for more than a century and a half, Gilles reemerged from obscurity in the 1950s, largely through the rediscovery of this requiem Mass.

This is a rare opportunity to experience the timeless grandeur of this glorious masterpiece along with Charpentier's Messe des Mort in live performance.

💬 Discussion Representative Joe Luneau’s response to yesterday’s post

This was posted on Front Porch Forum on October 24, 2026 by Representative Joe Luneau:

Front Porch Forum is a wonderful community resource to connect residents to local events and resources. I particularly enjoy the ongoing "In Old St. Albans" piece. I have stated before and continue to believe that politics do not belong in this forum. It is unfortunate that Ms. Bailey chose to publish a blatantly untrue account of what occurred at the candidate forum held at 14th Star Brewery on October 8th.

I agree in so far that there was a candidate forum at this location and date. A constituent did approach me immediately after the event. I was asked a question and then interrupted by her repeatedly when trying to respond. This is not earnest discourse just as the question was not posed to learn my thoughts but rather to initiate a one way diatribe. It is the duty of elected officials to listen to there constituents and to assist whenever possible. I return contacts from St. Albans residents in a timely manner as I have with Ms. Bailey in the past. This last piece was omitted from her characterization of me. It is not the responsibility of an elected official, or anyone else for that matter, to endure ranting from someone who has no actual interest in what they have to say.

I was not angry and did not raise my voice. I did walk way from this encounter because I do not tolerate abusive behavior. My face did not redden. Even if it had, anyone who actually knows me would be aware that my skin tone is such that you would not be able to see this. There is a small group of people in the community who could use a refresher course in civility. I have dealt with things such as dog excrement being left on my signs and similar sophomoric behavior this campaign season. People should be able to disagree without being disagreeable. This is one of this things that differentiates Vermont from many other parts of the Country.

I have spent the last two years in Montpelier focused on the issues of affordability and public safety to the benefit of St. Albans residents and Vermonters. It has been a privilege and an honor to represent St. Albans City, and I hope to continue this work in January.

📅 Event Joe Luneau Incident

A group of us attended the St. Albans City/Town State House Candidate Forum, facilitated by

the St. Albans Messenger in The Room/14 th Star Brewery on October 8th. The forum was pretty

good and we learned about each candidate’s position on various issues. After the forum,

however, we witnessed a disturbing incident. A constituent approached her incumbent,

Representative Joe Luneau, and asked a question. The exchange quickly escalated, with

Representative Luneau clearly not agreeing with the question about a point in his closing

statement. As the constituent tried to clarify her question, Representative Luneau became

visibly angry, red in the face, and loud. He eventually declared, “We don’t have the same beliefs

about this,” before stalking off, leaving his constituent standing there, her own face reddening.

Rude, disrespectful behavior is one thing, and certainly not in line with something I read

recently about Representative Luneau being “affable,” but my main concern is a deeper matter.

All our representatives, including Joe Luneau, represent all their constituents, not just the ones

who share their beliefs. While no representative can make all their constituents happy – an

impossible task, all representatives must listen to their constituents and consider their point of

view, even while sharing his own. Certainly, Reps should not leave their constituents feeling

threatened and leave them hanging at a public event.

Joe Luneau has not been on the job long, but if he has not learned how to manage questions

from independent or left-leaning constituents by now, will he ever? How will he work across

the aisle, if there isn’t a Republican Super Majority, to build solutions that make constituent

lives safer and more affordable and build healthcare and educational systems that work for all

Vermonters. Those questions will keep coming, especially with this Administration, so I want

someone who has the courage, life experience and vocabulary to stake out her own position

and the ability to listen and conduct civil discourse with her constituents.

💬 Discussion Driving test

Hello everyone. I have my driver's test next week. I've been practicing around St Alban's, but I was wondering if anyone knows where the route will be. I know it starts from the DMV at lower newton road, but where will they bring you to do the parallel parking, hill start etc? I just want to practice these locations before my test next week. Very nervous! Hopefully I'll pass!

💬 Discussion John Grismore

I just read a letter to Editor in the St Albans Messenger written from John Grismore. He was backing one of the candidates on the ballot for the Sheriff position, Chad Miles. And putting the other candidates down in his way.

I know and met Andre LaBier a few times when I worked with his wife. He has been in-law enforcement for a long time. If I still lived in St Albans he would get my vote.

The reason I am writing is this: why would you vote for anyone that John Grismore recommends and back? After John showing publicly that he was an abuser of his badge. Don’t trust anything he has to say.

Andre has been in law enforcement for a long time. Read up on Andre’s background. He is your best candidate for your Sheriff.

📅 Event Burlington Baroque Festival

*** worth the trip to Burlington***

In our third year, and this year’s programs are all blockbusters. If you’ve enjoyed Handel’s Messiah you will LOVE the powerful and dynamic choruses of Handel’s Oratorio, Israel in Egypt. Vivaldi is of course, Vivaldi! Delightful. Bach’s B Minor Mass, is considered a bucket list work to hear, and we present with period instruments, you will hear it in the way it was intended to be presented from the 1700s. Phenomenal Renaissance ensemble, Blue Heron will be presented. And if you have never heard French Baroque, you are in for a treat - the beautiful melodies, ornamented with lilting trills soothe the soul.

This is truly a world class series of performance, not to be missed.

💬 Discussion Recommendations for biking to Montreal + inexpensive places to stay overnight October 17 and 24?

Hi! I am planning a big Amtrak trip and taking my bike with me. To get from New York to Montreal, I can't take the Adirondack (doesn't allow bikes unless disassembled) so I'm planning to take the Vermonter to St. Albans and bike the remaining 80 or so miles, and do that again on the way back. That'll involves getting into St. Albans the evening of Oct 17 (around 9pm), finding somewhere to rest my head, and then biking the next morning from wherever I stay. Then doing the reverse, biking on the 24th, staying overnight near St. Albans, and catching the Vermonter back to NYC the morning of the 25th. Questions for anyone reading:

Any insights on the best route?

  1. Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail (default, 81mi)
  2. Petite Voie du Fleuve (82.7mi, less climbing)
  3. First 1 then 2 (87.9mi, longer and more climbing))

And any insights on affordable places to stay? Ideal budget is under $100 per night, but looking at prices that may not be doable so flexible to a bit higher. Literally wondering if I can borrow a tent from a friend and rough it. Warmshowers, the bike touring site, is currently down. If you know of anything (or even want to rent me your couch for two nights), please let me know! I'm extremely clean, respectful, and quiet and more than happy to buy you a meal in addition to a reasonable price for the bed/couch. Thanks in advance 🙏
