News !PSA! DO NOT SEND IN YOUR WIRELESS DONGLE FOR AN RMA!

So today i finally got my full kit RMA in...

JUST FOR IT TO NOT INCLUDE THE WIRELESS ADAPTER THEY LITERALLY TOLD ME TO SEND IN!

What the actual fuck...

So basically, the day after they told me what to pack into my return (Oct 10th) they updated the RMA guidance to saying not to send back the wireless adapter (Oct 11th) (screenshot from YouTube video about this exact issue).

I was NOT updated on this whatsoever, hence i sent it in as well. As they told me to do.

Here's to another like 2 weeks or longer of waiting to use my Frame 😎😁

Im genuinely crashing out about this as we speak 🙂

They best be sending that new one hot, fast and in a hurry next-day air.

Question What’s the best way to watch 3D movies and immersive VR content?

Hey everyone!

First of all, I’m really enjoying my Steam Frame so far! It’s my first VR headset, so I’m still pretty new to the whole VR experience. I’ve been using it regularly and I’m genuinely happy with it.

The only minor issue I’ve encountered is the initial connection with the Wi-Fi dongle. I usually have to unplug and reconnect it once or twice before the headset connects properly. I’ve already tried some of the Device Manager suggestions mentioned here, but haven’t found a completely reliable solution yet. Since my PC is in another room, I’m using an active USB 3.2 extension cable to position the dongle in my living room. Once the connection is established, everything runs smoothly, so it’s really not a big deal for me.

Anyway, my main question is about using the Steam Frame for media consumption beyond gaming, especially 3D movies and immersive VR videos.

I know I can access Netflix, Disney+, or Amazon Prime through the desktop, but what about actual 3D content?

Are there any convenient and legal ways to stream 3D movies or immersive VR videos without downloading files?

Ideally, I’d love something as simple as opening an app, browsing available content and watching it directly. Maybe I'm being a bit naive in hoping for such a simple solution, but I'm definitely open to alternatives if that's not possible. I'd just love to know what options are out there in the first place.

I’ve already come across a few discussions about VR media players and 3D content, but haven’t really found a satisfying answer. Maybe I’m just missing something obvious that more experienced VR users already know.

I’m also relatively new to Reddit. I actually discovered this community while waiting for the Steam Frame and really enjoyed following all the discussions and excitement leading up to its release.

So I’m curious: How do you guys watch 3D movies or immersive videos on your Steam Frame? Are there any apps, streaming services or platforms you’d recommend?

I’d really appreciate any suggestions or experiences you’re willing to share.

Thanks in advance!

Accessories Got my hands on a Frame and didn't want to wait weeks for a set of plano lens protectors so I had a go at making my own

The existing models didn't fit the generic Quest 3S lenses I got from Amazon, so I used the official Steam Frame CAD files to fit it to the Frame. Printed it in ANYCUBIC Ultra Tough Resin which has just enough flex to jam the lens in and friction fit on the headset.

It also does not block the eye tracking IR at all, though I see why manufacturers are struggling with that. To get the lens to not block the IR it has to extend pretty far down towards the bridge of your nose. Luckily it just barely fits on me without needing the spacer despite having a relatively big nose and long eyelashes. I also don't notice any added glare which is great.

I usually use FreeCAD but this model has a lot of organic shapes so it was faster to just do in Blender. Not going to bother sharing the STL since the lenses supplied by Amazon sellers are extremely inconsistent and the design is pretty dependent on the specific resin I used. I'm just proud I was able to pull it off in an afternoon.

Software PSA for streaming over Wi-Fi without the dongle

tl;dr
If you use the frame to stream over wifi without the dongle (or in multilink mode), there is a high chance you are seeing latency spikes due to background scans on the frame at least every 5 minutes. If this sounds familiar, read on, because there is a solution.

Fellow Framers,

since I've benefited quite a bit from this subreddit myself, I hope this can help a few people out there. I've been using the frame for a few weeks now and I've noticed intermittent latency spikes while streaming both vr and flat content from my pc. I have a very solid wifi setup at home so I don't use the dongle (so I can play anywhere in my house).

I did some digging and figured out that those latency spikes were't random but caused by the steam frame doing background wifi scans every 5 minutes (and every 30s if your signal level falls below a threshold of -65dBm). I was very surprised that I hadn't read about this before because I'm sure it affects quite a few people.

This shouldn't affect dongle-only users, as in that setup the direction is reversed (the frame is the AP and the PC is the client), but I've seen posts of people having the opposite problem where background scans on the PC caused problems with the connection to the dongle.

There is a simple solution, that is to disable background scans altogether. I've put a small script on github to do just that: https://github.com/vr-hunter/frame_wifi_scan_fix
Be advised that disabling background scans has some side-effects (see the repo readme in the link for details) but for me, this solved the only remaining latency issues I had left.

One unrelated hint for those who want to use the 6GHz band without the dongle (since I haven't read about that anywhere either): Under Settings->Internet->Connected Networks -> (your network name), there is a setting "Reserve Wi-Fi 6E for Steam Frame Wireless Adapter" which you'll have to disable in order for the frame to actually connect to your regular Wi-Fi on the 6 GHz band.

Accessories Wow look at all of those ergonomic kits on ebay.

Steam really dropped the fucking ball letting people buy as many of these things as they want after they purchased the frame.

I think this ergonomic kit situation is potentially the most infuriating part of this whole process that is just full of stupidity on valve's part.

I need this bullshit bc of an issue with my right hand so the fact it wasn't included already sucks.

Game Promotion I created a mixed reality mod of an old puzzle game for SteamFrame standalone

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Playing a lot of flat games on my Steam Frame recently, and I really wish I could add a bit more "depth" for most of them, so I tried to make a 3d diorama style mode for an old top-down puzzle game called QV.

you can get it here

I'm pretty happy with the result, so I'll probably do this again with a more action packed game next time !

EDIT : Added links

Discussion Fell in Love With Linux!

I've always been interested in Linux distro's as a concept but never bothered to explore it deeper or set up a Linux machine due to the support limitations for games and some softwares. I booted up the desktop on my frame laying in bed last night and immediately fell into a 2 hour rabbit hole of tinkering with it and researching the history of Linux and Unix. Arch is just so cool and clean and it really feels like a platform made with love and care and community crafted for people BY people. I REALLY love the flow of applications like the Zen browser as well and just generally the navigation of the GUI. I'm sure some of you may find this silly as veterans of the platform, but I really wanted to share this random little passion hit I got inadvertently from owning the frame. If you guys have any suggestions on applications or setups for the frame that get you excited, i'd love for you to share!

For my steam frame (which I don't even own yet 😭🥀), still on reservation list, but here's pics of what it looks like, very high quality it seems!

The lenses themselves took around a month and a bit for it to come, was in limbo and in the dark for a looong time 😅

Question HLA - Performance drop between sessions

UPDATE: Holy shit, I'm not crazy! Turns out multiple people have had this issue beginning with the October 26th HLA patch. I'm gonna try falling back to the previous version later today and I'll report back whether it fixes the issue.

ORIGINAL POST

Hello all, I'm really hoping someone here can help me because I'm getting desperate.

With my Steam Frame arriving, I'm finally getting around to play Half Life: Alyx. I had my first play session on Sunday, and it was a genuinely transcendent gaming experience. I was streaming it from my PC through the wireless adapter. The game was running on High Fidelity settings and it was smooth as butter. Consistent 70+ FPS, no stuttering, no noticeable latency. I played for about an hour and enjoyed every second.

The following evening, I excitedly booted up my headset and started up the game again, and the problems began immediately when the main menu appeared. Horrific, janky performance. I'm talking like 10-15 FPS, with stuttering bad enough to make me instantly motion sick.

  • I tried rebooting both my PC and the headset. No change.
  • I tried making sure absolutely nothing else was running on the PC. No change.
  • I tried disabling motion smoothing in the SteamVR settings. No change.
  • I tried setting the SteamVR and HLA processes to Realtime priority in Task Manager. No change.
  • I tried disabling Multilink. No change.
  • ...and the real kicker: I bumped the graphics quality settings down to the minimum available. NO CHANGE.

I've spent around 2 and a half hours in the last day or two trying to troubleshoot this. The one other VR game I have installed (Into the Radius) doesn't appear to have the same issue. I just want to get back to that incredible experience from the first play session, but I'm starting to worry that my Steam Frame has suddenly become irreparably shitty overnight for no reason at all.

Has anyone experienced similar problems, and do you know how to fix it?

Question Steam Frame battery dying while in shutdown.

Happened three times now. First time I assumed I accidentally clicked sleep. Last two times I’m sure I clicked shutdown. Is there another shutdown method I’m missing besides clicking power and then shutdown? Is it possible something is waking it up from shutdown?

Question Anyone figured out how to pass analog stick smooth scrolling into desktop mode?

I've mostly been using my headset for the "monitors anywhere" superpower, but not being able to resize the aspect ratio of the windows is very frustrating. If I go into the standalone Linux desktop I can at least resize the windows within that, but the scrolling behavior with the analog stick is very jittery, like I'm hitting a partial page-up or page-down a few times a second. I've tried fiddling with the desktop mode bindings between scroll wheel and arrow key emulation, but they didn't seem to do anything. The scrolling is perfectly smooth when I open Firefox outside the Desktop mode.

Alternately, if anyone knows how to change window aspect ratio outside of desktop mode, that would also solve my problems! It's frustrating to be able to hover the cursor over the edge, have the pointer change to a resizing icon as though I could do it, and then have it turn into an X whenever I try...

Discussion Thoughts on using Quest 3 after sending Frame for RMA

  1. The screen is really bright (the Q3 screen is nice - but so is Frame)
  2. My neck hurts... (man is comfort night and day)
  3. The Q3 controllers feel weird now (love the Frame controllers)
  4. I guess I'll be catching up on the TV shows I've fallen behind on since getting the Frame...
  5. Who am I kidding, I'm playing the awesome Flatout 2 VR mod and don't want to stop now! 😂
  6. EDIT: Forgot to mention how nice it is to be using Virtual Desktop again! Can't wait for that to be available on the Frame (fingers crossed - I know from his discord that the dev just got the mail on Oct 19th to purchase his so hoping!)

Question Has anyone used this PCVR chroma key passthrough tool? Is it safe?

Thumbnail
github.com
8 Upvotes

One of my biggest disappointments/annoyances since getting my Frame is the inability to use passthrough when streaming PCVR, especially with the Arcturus color camera add on. I really miss the chroma key functionality I used to use in Virtual Desktop on my Quest Pro, and it seems like a Frame port of VD is quite a ways off.

So I was stoked to find this project today, I’m definitely interested in it but I have zero experience with GitHub or SSH or anything. I’ve got basic tech literacy and feel like I can figure it out but I don’t want to brick this expensive, hard to get headset I was fortunate enough to secure!

Also, I see that it’s been made with Claude Code, which I don’t love but don’t think is necessarily a no-go… but it makes me nervous, especially since it involves my passthrough camera. Part of the reason I switched to Steam Frame is for privacy, don’t want to sacrifice that with a vibe-coded camera tool, haha 😅

So would love anyone’s input who knows more about this stuff, is it safe to install, both for my expensive hardware and for my privacy? I know GitHub projects are inherently open source so anyone can see what the code is doing, right? Should I give this a go? Thanks for advice 🙏

Is there any way to play the SteamVR Tutorial in standalone? The old one with the VR Assistance & Education Core. I know I can do it in desktop, but it seems crazy you can't do it standalone. I was going to bring the frame and wanted to use it as a first experience. This one on youtube.

Question Extremely slow/low fps in HL Alyx (suddenly)

Hey everyone,

Getting slowly more frustrated while being a beta tester.

I finished HL Alyx without any issues, Ultra Fidelity and extremely good FPS (9070XT). However, since today, whenever I start up HL Alyx, there are issues. First of all, the Valve letters are all wobbly and not sharp. Then, the menu starts, it has extremely low fps. I then enter the game and the FPS is still incredibly low. Even when setting it to Low Fidelity I still have low fps.

I rebooted my PC, rebooted the Frame, whatever I try, I can no longer play HL Alyx.

I just tried No Mans Sky and that has no issues. What could be causing this? I do have Levitation but I've been playing that for a few days with no issues whatsoever.

Anyone else have this problem?

Question Which cable would you recommend to minimize strain on the connector?

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

There’s a deal in Europe right now on the Ugreen Nexode 25,000mAh 145W power bank (€56 instead of €82).

I jumped at the chance, but it got me thinking about having a USB-C cable plugged in constantly while moving my head and body.

I’m concerned that this might cause premature wear to the Steam Deck’s port, and that choosing the right cable could be crucial to preventing that.

Do you think it would be better to use an angled (L-shaped) connector when plugging it into the device?

Question Which 2D titles do you prefer playing in VR rather than on your monitor (perhaps an OLED one)?

Beyond titles designed specifically for VR, are there any other games that you find immersive enough to be worth playing in VR?

For instance, I’d say games that require zero input lag—like the new *Phantom Blade*—are a bad idea; even the slightest bit of lag would be infuriating. On what basis do you choose?? Which ones would you suggest?
I thought games like Silver Pines, little nightmare and title like that can be great!

Just for have an idea, thanks:)

Software Steam Frames Steam-VR object permanence and saving of "workplace"

• Upvotes

I am working in academia and want to find out if creating 3-dimensional, explorable research notes would be something I enjoy. I already own a Steam Frame for recreational purposes, and having WhatsApp and YouTube and a game open and floating in the room where it is is really cool.

Is it currently somehow (even with 3rd party software) possible to save the location of the windows and then pause that play space, load a different one, and return to the first one, possible with days apart?

Thanks in advance

I'm really excited. I work in a lab that does VR Research for patient care and therapy. Our lab is self funded so getting a VR headset is pretty hard nowadays. Our lead engineer did reach out to Valve for a headset meant for medical research but they never got a response back. I'm going to let them take a look at this one to see if there's anything worth exploring with the Frane's open Linux-based platform. It's very exciting!

Question Getting no audio in streamed games

Device is set to steam frame, in arch and in the games, no dice for SH2 or Payday 2, stuff on device does work fine for audio. If I change the output to a separate set of headphones, it'll work. Any ideas?
