Also, there are quite a few festivals and major events that may not be listed here. I'll be updating as the weeks go on (lots of festivals aren't fully scheduled out until a few months in advance). Feel free to drop suggestions, additions, omissions and updates into the comments.

Discussion Onondaga County voters: Please understand how the two term limit proposals work before you vote.
I think this is actually pretty easy to misunderstand (almost intentionally), so I figured I’d share what I learned.
Right now, our County Executive (Ryan McMahon) and County Comptroller have no term limits. They can keep getting reelected indefinitely forever and ever and ever.
In November, we’re voting on two different proposals that could change that, these will both appear on your ballot.
Proposition 1: Limit them to 12 consecutive years.
Proposition 2: Limit them to 16 consecutive years.
You get to vote YES or NO on EACH proposal.
Here’s what you really need to understand:
Each proposal needs a majority of YES votes to pass.
If both get a majority, whichever gets MORE yes votes wins.
If neither gets a majority, NEITHER passes, and we still have no term limits.
For example, let’s say 100 people vote:
45 vote YES on the 12-year limit.
45 vote YES on the 16-year limit.
Neither passes. Even though plenty of people wanted term limits, we end up with NONE.
This is why voting YES on both is different from voting YES on just one.
If you’re okay with either limit, you can vote YES on both. You’re not choosing the 16-year limit over the 12-year limit, you’re saying you’d accept either one.
If you only support a 12-year limit and would rather have no limits than a 16-year limit, you can vote YES on 1 and NO on 2.
And if both pass, the one with more YES votes wins. Voting YES on both doesn’t automatically mean the longer limit wins.
ALSO, I think the narrative around this is getting messy!
Neither proposal counts years served before 2031. So even if term limits pass, all the years McMahon has already spent in office basically don’t count. He gets a fresh start as far as term limits are concerned.
So when you hear people talking about these proposals like they’re finally putting a limit on how long McMahon can stay in office, understand that there’s a pretty massive catch. These limits wouldn’t apply to the years he’s already served.
I’m all for term limits, but I think it’s ridiculous that someone can spend years in office and then essentially have the clock reset.
And if you need a reminder on why there are two proposals in the first place:
The County Legislature passed the 12-year proposal. McMahon’s office sent approval of it, then sent a veto just 19 minutes later, claiming the approval was a mistake.
That turned into a legal dispute, and now both proposals are on the ballot…
Personally, I strongly believe in term limits. I don’t think anyone should be able to hold the same political office indefinitely, and I don’t love that these proposals give people who have already served for years a fresh start.
I just want people to understand what they’re actually voting on, because it’s entirely possible for voters to support term limits and still end up with none if neither proposal gets enough votes.

News Election Information: I spoke with Dustin Czarny at the Onondaga County Board of Elections today to ask for clarification on the County Executive Term Limits Proposal. He directed me to the following and suggested I share it here.
This information is also pinned to the County Board of Elections Facebook and Twitter pages. There has been a good deal of commentary about this in the comments, which is what led me to seek clarification from a reliable source.

Discussion Ladies who play Magic: The Gathering
F30 here (and married, so please keep any creepy/imposing DMs to yourself.) looking for girls who play MTG or are interested in it!!
I love the cards, they’ve captured me, the art makes me so happy. I am hoping to make some new friends who can help me learn how to play! I have been using the app and watching YouTube but I have nobody to actually play with and would love to join a weekly ladies’ league if one exists?
Or just make friends with likeminded ladies in the area!

Should we list now or wait for the spring? How's the market over there? I feel so removed from info on Syracuse, any advice is appriciate.

Other Is your Halloween costume/cosplay a Starfleet officer? Do you need a combadge?
I just bought a bag of loose Star Trek action figure stands to use as com badges for costuems and there are many more than I need! Photo in the comments.
They each have a nub where the figure's foot locks in, but it could be filed off and repainted (or left there, it's whatever). They also have names on them with a sticker label that can be removed (though I haven't tried yet).
I suppose if you also have a figure that you want a stand for, lmk and you can have one!
I have:
TNG era x8
DS9/VOY era x3
Romulan x3
Klingon x1 (no label)
Ferengi x1
Federation logo x1
DM me if you want to come pick one up.

Information & Advice Do any of the YMCA’s pools have open water swimming?
By open water swimming I mean not in lanes. My partner and I would like to just hang out together in the pool but I’m seeing that most of the Y’s pools are reserved lanes for laps.

Recommendation Wanted Boots for winter time
I have lived in Syracuse my entire life and still don’t know what shoes to be wearing in the winter. I want boots that keep snow from getting on my ankles, but are also something I can wear all day long (in grad school at SU). Do people wear hunter boots in the winter? I know they’re rain boots but…I don’t know. Where do you guys buy your boots?

Recommendation Wanted Events this / next week?
Looking for something fun to do with my sister who’s going through a rough time. Art shows, fun craft events, holiday markets, etc. I’m not from the area but wanted to give options and didn’t see much on fb!! In east Syracuse, downtown, or really in any surrounding areas :)

Other Local Art Looking to Hire Help
Hi, I'm looking for some help before/during the holidays with a potential to expand.
I'm a local illustrator and maker and I could use an extra set of hands before the holidays get crazy.
This work is technical but it's fun to learn, it includes making stickers, cards, and other handmade items.
My studio is in my home, so you must be good with dogs.
I'm looking for someone who is trustworthy, able to take criticism (making stuff is hard and you will mess up - which is okay, but you have to be able to hear and apply feedback), and dexterous with their hands.
Send me your resume! cashmeresun(at)gmail(dot).com

Moving & Relocation 🏠LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO TAKE OVER MY HALF OF A LEASE IN LIVERPOOL, NY!
I recently moved from Syracuse to Rochester to be closer to my family, so I’m looking for someone to take over my half of the lease and become my current roommate’s new roommate! 😊
📅 Ideal move-in date: December 1, 2026
📅 Lease ends: April 30, 2027
🐱 Pets: My roommate has a cat, so you must be comfortable living with cats!
$725 a month plus wifi and electricity. Heat and water are provided.
A little about the living situation: My roommate is in her early 30s and will continue living in the apartment. You’d be taking over my spot, not renting an entire apartment.
If you’re looking for a place in the Syracuse area or know someone who might be interested, please message me! I’d be happy to share more details about the rent, apartment, location, and anything else you’d like to know.
Please feel free to share this post to help me find someone! ❤️

Rant Anyone notice the daily fireworks just north of the city?
It seems to be happening pretty randomly. I've been hearing them for months now and they seem to go off as early as 8am to even past midnight some nights.
It was fine at first but it's just kinda getting annoying now.

Recommendation Wanted Barber for toddler’s first haircut
I’m looking for a barber for my son’s first trim. His mother doesn’t have a car and I can’t give her a ride for safety concerns but I want her to be there if she wants to be so I’d like to find a place on a bus route. He has 4C hair.

Food & Drink Suggestions for a Holiday Luncheon?
Trying to get ahead on planning for the holiday season, looking for recommendations on a holiday lunch spot that can accommodate about 10 people. I would like it to feel somewhat nice but we are pretty casual and folks will want to be able to grab a beer. Syracuse/northern suburbs preferred but open to all suggestions! TIA!

Recommendation Wanted Textile shops in the area
I am searching for non-quilting fabric textile shops. I am working on some projects for Christmas that require different fabrics (canvas, duck canvas, leather, etc.) and was wondering if you know of any retailers in the area that might have these. Most quilt stores have cotton flannels, quilting cotton, or minky fabrics but I can't find larger weave fabrics and would love some recs.

Moving & Relocation east syracuse->looking for a roommate
Hello! I currently live in a cute house in the village of East Syracuse (right by the 690/481 onramps, about 15 minutes from Upstate/Crouse/SU) and am looking for a roommate! I am 26F so I am hoping to find someone who is also female/femme, lgbt+ friendly, and ok living with very social cats (there are 4 and they LOVE people). One of my cats is a huge dog hater so we can’t have a dog in the house, but any other pets should be fine!
If this sounds like something that could work for you or someone you know please send me a message for more information!! :)
I’m including a picture of one of the kitties (The Skunk) to help get attention. ❤️
