Seeking opinions on what’s causing the lavender color and slow growth on this Siberia tomato plant.
Currently feeding it CZ two part fertilizer in DWC.
Three other plants next to it are the same. Tasmanian chocolate and siletz.

The last of my last, so please excuse their haggard appearance! It’s gotten cold and I’ve been slacking on watering lol - they’ve been split by the rains!

Show and Tell Growing Cherokee Purple tomatoes in the Egyptian desert

Post image
125 Upvotes

I'm so happy, and I just had to share this little victory with this wonderful community!

I'm a complete beginner, and while I was abroad, I bought a pack of Cherokee Purple seeds and decided to try my luck growing them in the middle of the Egyptian desert (Cairo). 😅

And boy, did I make things difficult for this poor plant.

For starters, I planted the seeds right in the middle of our scorching Egyptian summer. Not exactly the smartest decision.

Then came every beginner mistake imaginable: terrible potting decisions and soil mixes, fertilizer experiments, too much sun, too much shade, flowers dropping left and right... You name it, I've probably done it. The poor thing ended up leggy, weak, and looking like it had completely given up on life.

But somehow, it kept surviving. And I kept learning.

After months of trial and error, countless mistakes, and a lot of patience, this one stubborn little plant finally rewarded me with my VERY FIRST CHEROKEE PURPLE TOMATO!

Until someone proves otherwise, I'm officially declaring this the first Cherokee Purple tomato in Egyptian history. 😂🇪🇬"

And here's the best part: while most of you are saying your goodbyes to your tomato plants as winter approaches, mine is just getting started. We don't really do frost here in Cairo. 😎

Wish this little survivor luck. We've still got a long way to go!

Question Do you eat tomatoes that have sprouted?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello!

My grandmother grows tomatoes and gives them to me. My flat is pretty warm and full of light during the day and i keep my tomatoes in a bowl on the kitchen table. Multiple times the seeds inside have sprouted while the tomato is still whole. Sometimes a lot and very small, almost unnoticeable sprouts, but sometimes (like this time) very pronounced.

I've eaten the tomatoes none the less. Today though a miracle happened and i formed a thought before 7am. Many nightshade plants are poisonous in the parts your not supposed to eat. Are the sprouts poisonous?

I picked out the sprouts from the tomato this time because i didn't like them. (They tasted like uncooked potatoes and i wasn't in the mood for that) Now i have a picture for reference.

I would be sad if i had to throw out my tomatoes if it is wrong to eat them. Is there a way to prevent them from sprouting?

Ps. Forming a single thought doesn't mean I've fully woken up so im sorry for my english.

Plant Help "Juni' heirloom mini-dwarf - blossom end rot conundrum

Thumbnail

All the fruit on my Juni plants is currently being tossed due to blossom end rot, despite having steadily ramped up my watering over the past 2-3 weeks. I'm not sure what to do because they're now exhibiting both BER (suggesting the soil needs to be kept more moist) *and* leaf epinasty (suggesting overwatering/root rot). The seed packet said Juni toms do alright in 1-2 gallon pots, and the pot they're in has good drainage.

Any advice for next steps? These are prolific plants, setting fruit all over the place, and I hate to see it all going to waste. These are indoors being grown on a West-facing windowsill (NC, US zone 8a).

Including a pic of my other toms ("Candyberry" and "Carrot-Leaf Mini") on the same windowsill because they also have leaf epinasty but have not had the same issues with BER. All of the toms have very sturdy stems and leaves--the leaves are just curled down. I'm pretty sure the issue isn't high ethylene, because there's no heat running, and my lettuce on the same windowsill is still green and crispy despite some bolting.

In California, plant has been outside since I bought it 2 months ago. I have been using plant food, no signs of caterpillars or anything. It’s mostly the middle and lower leaves not the new growth. But I am seeing an occasional spot or two in the new leaves.
Thank you!

Question Upside down tomato cages

Has anyone tried using upside down tomato cages? Where you trim off the top ring and stick it in upside down. Then wire the original eggs together into a point. Just wondering if it was more stable and was more supportive for lower branches without having a mass a foliage at the top that shaded the whole bottom.

Question What is the deal with Mr. Stripey Tomatoes?

Post image
32 Upvotes

The variety I bought from Burpee was Mr. Stripey, which I had never grown before (I have a long raised bed and usually do 6-7 plants, each a different variety). I bought it as a plant, not seeds. The Mr. Stripey was hit particularly hard by heat waves and too much sun in June and July, until I got shade curtains, so it only started showing fruit in August (7a). I put a LOT of work into this plant, but I got about 18-20 tomatoes, all picked at the end of September.

Problem is they all looked like the picture - orange, smooth and zero stripes. They also are terrible eating tomatoes, with zero sweetness and little flavor. Easily the worst tasting tomato I have grown.

At first I thought the issue was cross pollination, as this plant had an Orange Napoleon right next to it (which did very well). Then I started looking around online, and found it to be a lot more widespread than I thought. When I look at the 20 reviews on Burpee's website, four of them complain about getting smooth orange/yellow tomatoes with zero stripes (two from 5 years ago, one 4 years ago and one last year). It comes up in reviews on Home Depot and Amazon too.

People have repeatedly posted in this sub with the EXACT same issue, going back several years: https://www.reddit.com/r/tomatoes/comments/1naebzu/they_probably_are_not_mr_stripey_i_started_a_new/

https://www.reddit.com/r/gardening/comments/1mtwvo2/harvest_early_or_leave_it/

What the hell is going on here?!?! How is the variety having the same problems, going back 5 years, both when bought as seeds or as plants, and when bought from different places?

They're under the skin, and the tomato isn't squishy. These are some of the last stragglers of the year (I'm in southern Ontario, Canada), don't wanna end on a bad note with them if they just gonna make me sick. 😔

I’ve never grown any vegetable before, let alone tomatoes, so I didn’t really feel confident that I knew what I was doing. This is a Tommy Toe variety planted late September and I’ve just started to get my first fruit! I’m very lucky to have quite good, sunny conditions for the plant and depending on how much it continues to grow, I may consider attaching it to my pergola. I’ve just popped another variety in a garden bed after the joy of seeing this one grow 🤗
