General ITS Service Desk Hiring for Fall 2026 (Apps close Wed, 8/5!)

The ITS Service Desk, also known as ResNet, is hiring for Fall 2026! We will be closing applications for this cycle next week on Wednesday, August 5. Here is the link to our online application: https://resnet.ucsd.edu/jobs

All the details are spelled out on the "Apply Here" page, but here's some info at a glance:

Feel free to reference the page above to learn more about the position, desired qualifications, and more. Here is a snippet of what we look for:

  • $18.75/hour for base ResNet Technicians, with equity raises for each year you work with us. There will also be opportunities to apply to be a student lead after you’ve worked with us for a bit!
  • All UCSD students are welcome (including incoming undergraduate and graduate students).
  • While we look for good critical thinking, problem solving, and basic technical skills, we also look forward to teaching you the rest during your training period!
  • All majors are welcome! You do not need to be a CS or STEM major to apply. Many of our best technicians have been Humanities or Social Sciences majors.
  • You will need English and communication skills, whether this is in-person, over the phone, and via email.
  • Scheduling is flexible. You’re a student first! We plan your schedule around your classes, conflicts, and commitments when given in advance!

So, what do we do at the ITS Service Desk? We help students and staff with a wide range of technology-related issues including email, accounts, Canvas, lab machines, classrooms, Zoom, and wireless internet. If you're interested in a bit of a peak behind the curtain at UCSD IT infrastructure, this role may interest you. This role is primarily customer service.

Is this job right for me? As long as you like helping people, are inquisitive, and are willing to learn, we think you'll find this job quite fulfilling!

How many hours per week? During the academic year, you may work anywhere from 12-20 hours per week!

Is this job in-person? This position is mainly in-person. While are currently located in Muir College at AP&M 1313, we will be moving to 3100 Gilman Drive (Gilman Parking Structure) in September.

Sounds great! When do I start? We're targeting a start date of early September for Fall. We will close the applications when we have filled all our spots or on August 5 (whichever comes first), so the earlier you apply the better!

If you have any questions that aren't answered on the application (hit the "Apply Here" button for more info), please email [helpdeskjobs@ucsd.edu](mailto:helpdeskjobs@ucsd.edu).

Note that after a period of inactivity on the job application, the SSO login will sign you out, so we suggest typing your responses into a separate document before pasting them into your application!

Discussion I was today years old when I found out about the UCSD STD Club

This might sound outlandish and disgusting, as I had a hard time believing this as well. I found out there was a discreet club at UCSD where people who have STDs attempt to spread them as much as possible on campus and to different people. They also keep track of who started it and who spread it to whom on a spreadsheet and with some sort of weird family tree Canva art. They just have some weird fetish of spreading their disease so that it can be spread to other people. They even have a special event JUST for Halloween. I am not making this post to call anyone out, but I am purely making this post to spread awareness of STDs. So please, Don't be silly; wrap that willy.

Rant/Complaint eitan shamir at ucsd poli 142L

bro I can't stop thinking about the fact that he likened muslims to being naturally terroristic. How is he still a professor? How can he still be teaching? Its so shocking that theres such blatant islamaphobia on campus. Like I couldn't even organize my thoughts. And then when students spoke out against what he said he backtracked and said of course there's nuance. Nuance? When you so casually generalize billions of people into being naturally terroristic? actually a joke.

edit: context. The class was on suicide bombing. His examples were all muslims, mostly palestine and afganistan and lebanon. A student stated that it seems that all suicide bombing leads back to islam. Shamir says "I am not educated on islamic ideology, but if you look at the fundamentals, it seems that they do not care for this life, only the after life. They think being suicide bombers means to be martyrs, and so it is fundemental for them. It is natural for them. Another student then challenged him, saying that he is simplifying islam to this general stereotype when he does not know enough about islam. At this point, Shamir interrupts this student like five times, saying he cannot hear her (I was sitting across the room and heard her just fine) and got real closer to her. As she added nuance to this, saying other reasons why many people may be manipulated or taken advantage of and that it's not a basic belief that all muslims naturally are inclined towards terrorism. At this point, he has interrupted her multiple times, but she pushes on and brings up judaism as an example in the establishment of Israel. Some jewish people believe it is a God given right, others believe the "God given right" must come directly from the massiah, from God. She basically says simplifying any belief does not do justice to the multiple factors that come into play. He then backtracks and says Of course there is nuance. But continues to say that still muslims are pretty naturally inclined towards this in these examples for politics

Question Failed Math 20C Midterm

Just got my math 20c midterm 1 back and I got a 43%. For context, I studied a lot for this exam but I just forgot everything the second I started taking the exam. I also have heard that the second midterm and final is really hard. Also, one midterm does get dropped.

How bad is this score? Can I recover from this at all? Can I even pass the class at this rate? Or should I just drop it?

General Need Help Making Friends / Getting a Girlfriend

Yes I've scheduled an appointment for CAPs but it just feels like people look down on me and i have glasses and there's a lot of passive aggressive energy or shade thrown to me and if I hang out at student orgs even for a while I feel like I'm almost invisible / I hit a wall where people are just sort of polite but they're a little distant, like I'm not worth investing in. It just makes me feel sad, maybe once I graduate and get a job and get more hobbies it'll be better, but I just can't help but feel that while I understand the college system divides everything and academics can stress people out, it's sort of like people wanna treat me with contempt; I have not said anything bad towards anyone. Furthermore, it sort of feels like wanting connection even when I'm respectful and don't cross any boundaries gets treated with slight contempt like it's an insult someone who doesn't improve their image asks them out. Sorry if this sounded a bit negative, but ima make it and glow up and find the right person regardless of how cruel some people can be. I promise. Even if I get a job elsewhere that's not here or the bay area.

Also anybody wondering about eye glasses the issue is I can't really get contacts into my eye because they're not large enough and my eye doctor told me the best solution is LASIK/a form of LASIK for dry eyes, so basically after university and for a lot.

I promise I won't break tho and I'll make my mom and dad proud and achieve things I never thought were possible.

Question Halloween Plans

How do people find out about halloween parties/fun events? I'm a bit shy and none of my friends are party people. I'm over 21 so if there's any fun clubs or bars students go to on halloween that is also welcome.

Rant/Complaint UC SHIP extremely predatory

UCSD seems to love automatically opting us in to very expensive programs, namely UC SHIP and Triton One. They opt us in without our consent and provide minimal notification of it. They also seem to obfuscate the manner by which you cancel each charge as much as possible. If I recall triton one requires a series of emails with a specific department and UC SHIP now requires logging in to a completely separate portal and navigating to a waiver hidden somewhere on there. When I tried to waive my SHIP the waiver was legitimately not on the website for some reason and now I’m stuck with it.

Maybe I’m just angry that I missed the window but it really does seem nefarious how this school tries to nickel and dime us at every turn. Almost feels like the auto enrollment in these programs could warrant a class action lawsuit or something.

Another thought I just had: it seems odd that we are automatically re-enrolled in UC SHIP despite waiving it in prior quarters. Feels like after opting out once you should be required to opt back in to resume service.

As others have pointed out the reasoning behind doing it this way may be far less nefarious than it may seem. however it’s hard to believe they aren’t at least somewhat motivated to set up as many barriers as possible. If this school weren’t so financially exhausting I could feel more comfortable in believing they have a good reason behind doing it this way.

Event Looking for a Film student or someone who knows how to setup filming equipment for a club production

Hi. My on-campus club is interested in filming a short film, and we need help setting up the filming equipment (such as the camera, lighting, and the mics). Ideally, we want help from someone who is either studying a film-related major or someone who has prior experience in properly setting up filming equipment. The filming will happen in a reserved room on campus, and if you are interested, please DM me directly, and I would be glad to give out more specific details through private conversation. In return for the work, I will pay for your next meal.

Event Is there anyone else attending the KINO concert in LA?

Hello all!

I am a second year student and am attending their concert on November 16th. I wanted to know if there were any other students going so that we may carpool.

If not, where else does everyone recommend I could ask to find carpool options?

Thanks in advance.

Question How to get in frat Halloween parties

How do girls get into frat Halloween parties at UCSD?
Genuine question because I have no idea how frat parties work here 😭
Most of my friends are going to UCLA, SDSU, UCI, or Berkeley for Halloween, and only a few are staying in SD. I also missed out on tickets for all the sports club parties, so at this point I feel like frat parties are my only option lol.
The problem is, my friends and I literally don’t know a single guy in a frat. We don’t even know where the parties are or how people find out about them.
So how does it actually work? Can girls just show up and get in, or do you need to know someone? And how do you even find out which frats are throwing parties?
Any advice would be appreciated because we’re genuinely clueless 😭

Question late major swap

i'm a junior transfer about to wrap up my first quarter here, but i realized a bit too late that i actually want to switch my major to bioanth. i've taken a few prerequisites for that class during my time majoring in bio + an anth class my freshman year. my issue is, the past 2 years have been pretty hazy. as in, i had no idea what i wanted to do with my life.

i went from taking english courses to now taking physics courses as i thought i wanted to go into academia. if i declare bioanth and start next quarter, will the school allow me to swap?

and, should i withdraw from my current classes?

General Clubs to join

I'm a freshman at Ucsd and on the pre health track and I wanted to know what clubs there are for the more social aspect. I feel like a lot of people I met are in families or have Big Littles for clubs like VSA and CASA, are those fun or are there any others I should look out for. I feel like I'm a member in a few clubs but I haven't really gotten close to people within the clubs so I was wondering what are some other ways to get more connected. Or any other fun clubs to join!!
