We whistled and chirped up the rest of the gang, then celebrated with dog treats 🥰

I’m taking my kid into Vic for Halloween because we live in farm lands where trick or treating isn’t really an option! Any tips for some awesome streets that will be bustling with kids and decorated spooky homes?

Just wanted to give you an idea of what Muji is like on opening day 2.
They ran out of complimentary totes and treats about an hour in.
It’s about a 15 minute wait to get into the store.
Once inside, it’s about a 45 minute wait or more for the cash register. The line goes fully down one side of the store and up the other. They have a cheerful worker who’s only job is to stand at the end of the line with a sign saying it’s the end of the line.
It’s a smaller store, so there are some staples missing, noticeably the Hojicha powder I came out here to get.
Everything is on the pricier end.
Fitted sheet set for a double bed is $120
A single gel ball point pen is $2.40
A plain solid colour mug is $11.90
But everything feels quality. I’ve not picked up anything that feels cheap. Even the mug.

Anyone know what the incredibly loud droning sound is off Quadra near the Shell station? Quadra and Falmouth/Palmer? It’s almost midnight and it has been going on for at least half an hour. It sounds like construction noise, like jackhammering or an incredibly loud car staying in the same spot.

It seems they having been trying to constantly rent their appartments for 6+ months and their website is offering 2 months free.
I have to know if anyone is currently living there and can confirm if it is a ghost town or if it is filling up?

Howdy folks! Looking to watch some salmon jumping up/on/over things again this Fall, but not sure if the season has started yet or not.
Has anyone gotten any good sightings yet? When's the best time of the season to go? (and time of day, for that matter)
Also looking for new spots to watch from. Any recommendations other than Goldstream Provincial Park?

Not since 1975 has the NDP bungled a lead and called a snap election only to …. Lose.

I made a post 5 months ago after the fallout of the Cowichan decision flipped a huge portion of greater Vancouver and Surrey in the polls. The post was down voted into oblivion for obvious reasons. The polls continued to show Conservative majorities since than until the Conservative leadership debacle, which could have lead Eby to calling the early election. However, even if all the districts on the island went NDP, it still wouldn't matter because they lost control of Vancouver/Surrey.
The god awful handling of the Cowichan decision by the NDP served the mainland up on silver platter to the Conservatives. And though its not on the onus of the Cowichan tribes to quell fears about land ownership, they didn't really do much to calm the situation down besides a general statement. Now if you look at the Conservative media pipeline (Facebook, Reddit and X), they continued to fan the flames of the Cowichan decision with news of further NDP land transfers to First Nations. The real consequences of the Cowichan decision and the land transfers have yet to be seen, but many law professionals say there will be little if any difference that these transfers will make. Its essentially chalked up to a culture war talking point.
So what I see from this election is the Conservatives essentially winning a culture war against the NDP , on a talking point that the NDP and the left in general ignored because it was uncomfortable and the Conservatives were the only ones willing to question it.

You've seen my photos, here's a recent one of the Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405), shot from my backyard in narrowband.
I'm setting up the C12 on Halloween for the neighborhood kids. Definitely doing the Moon, Saturn, maybe M31 (Andromeda).
Free, no sign-up, just show up.
I'm looking for suggestions on WHERE to set up somewhere safe for kids, easy foot access, good southern/southeastern horizon for Saturn (it's low this time of year), but also not lit up like a mall parking lot. Oswald or Cedar hill park? Also thinking about time dusk to maybe 9 PM? Open to ideas.
If you've done sidewalk astronomy with kids before, what targets got the best reactions? Moon always kills, Saturn blows their minds, maybe a big galaxy like M31? Ring Nebula (M57)?
What would be a good place to set up? Normally i go to cattle point for sidewalk astronomy, but thats not a great trick or telescope location.
If I can get a good location, I can probably recruit some other astronomers for a Fright Light sidewalk astronomy session.

I've never really done much for Halloween, so I don't know what goes on. I have a funny costume I wanna wear but it's probably too slutty for me to wear around children. What events are taking place where people dress up and is ideally only adults?

Before I get deep into this, let me just say that I am a strategic voter.
The merits/drawbacks of it have been hotly debated all over BC and on this sub. I do not like that I have to be a strategic voter, to me it points to an electoral system that is broken and needs to be fixed.
With that being said, it looks like it wouldn't have changed anything this election at least in regards to what party won the most seats.
A quick look at each riding (I apologize if I missed any in the list, it's early and coffee is still being consumed) shows that there were 11 ridings that could have possibly gone to the NDP if it weren't for the vote split. This list is being very generous as in some of the cases it would have been a close race even if all the Green voters switched.
Saanich South
Juan de Fua-Malahat
Cowichan Valley
Ladysmith-Oceanside
North Island
Vancouver-Yaletown
Vancouver-Fraserview
Burnaby Centre
Port Moody-Burquitlam
Coquitlam-Maillardville
North Vancouver-Seymour
If we assume that everyone strategically voted in each of these ridings, that would shift the seats to 53 for the Cons, 38 for the NDP. Still nowhere close to being close.
This post isn't here to pitch one side against the other, or for those who have not strategically voted to point to this event with an exclamation of "See! I told you it wouldn't matter." It will matter for the people living in those ridings. But still, this post isn't about that.
If I could ask one thing of everyone reading this. Talk about voting reform. Talk to your family, your friends about voting reform, if you're politically active then write to your representatives about voting reform. Not two weeks before the next election. Not when it pops back up again when it's too late to implement it. Now, constantly, make this a talking point that doesn't go away.
I don't care that there have been two referendums on this already. The current system makes your vote worth less, and encourages a polarized environment.
If you are as tired of this system as I am, of having to have the same arguments each and every election. Of having to hold your nose while strategically voting. Then lets all demand something better. Lets give our votes real power. Let's bridge the gap and allow people to vote both strategically AND with their conscience. Sure, it might not have made a difference this election cycle, but that doesn't mean it won't make a difference in the next. And it would make the whole headache of what we all just went through a whole lot easier next time.
Here is a good video on how a Single Transferable Vote would work:

> Be David Eby
> Slander, sabotage, and then disqualify the only candidate running against you in the 2022 NDP leadership race, a young democratic socialist and climate activist, and then assume the position unopposed
> Govern as a centrist
> Watch the Greens elect Emily Lowan, a young democratic socialist and climate activist, as leader
> Opportunistically call a snap election when you see the Conservatives are in disarray
> Piss everyone off
> Accidentally cause the first Conservative majority in 98 years
> Austerity time!

Costco had me eating 3/5 meals as tacos thanks to these bomb-ass corn tortillas (the good, restaurant kind, not the too-big, too-processed grocery story trash) but they are no longer available so I ask to you--no, I plead--where in our great area can I find some downright straight up authentic Mexican yellow corn tortillas so I can get back on that taco train. I will not accept any big ol' white/flour heresy.
I thought I heard Esquimalt had a place?

The Galey Farms halloween event is super fun! At first I balked at the price, but it was worth it. A fun night out for the family.
