Please don't be like this person

It's extremely upsetting to see someone walk up my front path and snap an entire branch off of one of my dahlia plants. The audacity.

If you know this person, please tell them to do better.

After telling CTV that “The challenge in responding to these accusations is that there are also many fake posts attributed to me, generated by people looking to attack me” Wendy Bowkett has now deleted her X account, effectively scrubbing the evidence.

Snapshots from the now deleted account can be found here:

(the perma.cc links are true snapshots that can't be modified)

Edit: I’m not the creator of the petition. Just spreading awareness.

Trick or Telescope? Sidewalk Séance

Post image
10 Upvotes

You've seen my photos, here's a recent one of the Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405), shot from my backyard in narrowband.

I'm setting up the C12 on Halloween for the neighborhood kids. Definitely doing the Moon, Saturn, maybe M31 (Andromeda).

Free, no sign-up, just show up.

I'm looking for suggestions on WHERE to set up somewhere safe for kids, easy foot access, good southern/southeastern horizon for Saturn (it's low this time of year), but also not lit up like a mall parking lot. Oswald or Cedar hill park? Also thinking about time dusk to maybe 9 PM? Open to ideas.

If you've done sidewalk astronomy with kids before, what targets got the best reactions? Moon always kills, Saturn blows their minds, maybe a big galaxy like M31? Ring Nebula (M57)?

What would be a good place to set up? Normally i go to cattle point for sidewalk astronomy, but thats not a great trick or telescope location.

If I can get a good location, I can probably recruit some other astronomers for a Fright Light sidewalk astronomy session.

Heard a noise that I recognized but couldn't identify. So I started whistling. It was a baby raccoon.

We whistled and chirped up the rest of the gang, then celebrated with dog treats 🥰

Housing & Moving Is anyone actually renting university heights?

It seems they having been trying to constantly rent their appartments for 6+ months and their website is offering 2 months free.

I have to know if anyone is currently living there and can confirm if it is a ghost town or if it is filling up?

Authentic Yellow Corn Tortillas?

Costco had me eating 3/5 meals as tacos thanks to these bomb-ass corn tortillas (the good, restaurant kind, not the too-big, too-processed grocery story trash) but they are no longer available so I ask to you--no, I plead--where in our great area can I find some downright straight up authentic Mexican yellow corn tortillas so I can get back on that taco train. I will not accept any big ol' white/flour heresy.

I thought I heard Esquimalt had a place?

What's Happening? Muji opening day 2

Just wanted to give you an idea of what Muji is like on opening day 2.

They ran out of complimentary totes and treats about an hour in.
It’s about a 15 minute wait to get into the store.
Once inside, it’s about a 45 minute wait or more for the cash register. The line goes fully down one side of the store and up the other. They have a cheerful worker who’s only job is to stand at the end of the line with a sign saying it’s the end of the line.

It’s a smaller store, so there are some staples missing, noticeably the Hojicha powder I came out here to get.

Everything is on the pricier end.
Fitted sheet set for a double bed is $120
A single gel ball point pen is $2.40
A plain solid colour mug is $11.90

But everything feels quality. I’ve not picked up anything that feels cheap. Even the mug.

What do you want the NDP (or other parties) to change?

Now that the Conservatives have won a strong majority and will be in power for at least a few years, it is time for the NDP and other parties that didn't exceed expectations to take a hard look at themselves and decide what they should change.

Every election takes place in a new environment, and there is no question this is a challenging time for incumbent governments all over the country (and the world). But the definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting different results.

What do you, as a voter, want to see each party do differently going forward? What policy changes do you think they need to make? What kind of voters do they need to try to appeal to that they aren't winning now?

And finally, what steps are you planning to take as a resident of Victoria to try and make that change happen?

Opinion Eby came from a District with now 3 Former Premiers..Let's win back a Vancouver Island Premier!

John Horgan was the most successful and i think only Premier in recent memory from the Island. Even though he governed more of a centre-left rather than progressive, it seemingly worked across the province. And like when good things come to an end, the person who immediately replaces them screws it up big time for that party.

Eby has now represented a district with 3 former premiers and all 3 now with major baggage that we want to forget. All of the premiers have all come from the mainland with only 1 from the island. Not someone like Carole James however as she was polarizing in the opposition and within the NDP, though less so than Eby.

It's gonna be hard to replicate another Horgan and who knows if the new NDP leader will be a current MP or someone who hasn't run for office yet but one thing's for sure, we don't need another premier from Vancouver-Point Grey....maybe there's a charismatic leader on the island who can do it again?

Politics Some perspective for those who feel wronged by the election

Progressive ideas are great. I've been a progressive voter my entire life and will continue to be. I'm upset that the NDP lost as well.

But our democracy demands compromise and finding common ground with people that hold different values. It is VERY apparent, based on the endless stream of threads in this sub, that many in Victoria feel that something that was theirs has been taken from them. You're not allowed to be offended by losing something that never belonged to you. Politics isn't won and lost. It's a conversation, not a contest.

If you woke up this morning acting like the government of BC somehow became your enemy overnight, it's time for some serious self-reflection on how lucky we are to live here and have a role in choosing our own government.

Preliminary BC election voter turnout was down

I saw this in the comments but wanted to indendently verify and raise it up for awareness: Voter turnout was down from the last election

Preliminary voter turnout for 2026: 48% https://results.elections.bc.ca/Results_11684_GE-2026-10-24_Candidate.html

Last election in 2024: 58% https://elections.bc.ca/resources/results/voter-turnout/

2020: 54%

2017: 61%

Regardless of results, I would wish for a higher voter turnout. I think voting system reform would help - what is the best path forward for that?

Politics as a student, should i be worried about this election?

Hey all, I'm currently a student at UVic but I'm from out of province (not eligible to vote here). I'm trying not to fall into that kind of short-term doomerism that normally follows elections but I gotta admit it's got me worried. I can barely afford to live in Victoria as is, and if the cost of living, tuition, rent, transit, etc increases by any significant margin I simply won't be able to stay here. Should I be worried enough to start coming up with a backup plan or am I getting ahead of myself?
