Sticky Post your questions & inquiries here! - r/Vietnam monthly random discussion thread - F.A.Q

Lưu ý: Đây là thread chủ yếu dành cho người nước ngoài hoặc không nói tiếng Việt đặt câu hỏi. Nếu có thể, hãy trả lời giúp họ nhé.

Please read the 3rd rule of the sub. Don't post your general questions & inquiries outside of this thread as they will be removed.

Lots of your questions have been answered already so make sure you do a search before asking (how-to below).

To keep this subreddit tidy, we have this monthly thread that is open for random discussions and questions. If you post your basic/general questions outside of this thread they will be removed. Sorry, we want to make this sub friendly but also want it to be clean and organized.

Some examples of the questions that should be posted here:

  • Questions that can be answered with just Yes/No
  • Basic questions like "Where can I buy this?"
  • Questions that were asked many times before. Please do your research
  • Questions that are not specific

Tips to quickly find answers for your questions:

Many of your questions may have been answered since people keep asking the same ones again and again. Here is a quick tip to find the answers for yours.

First, have a look at our old sticky threads. A lot of useful information there. A lot of questions have been answered.

You can also use the search feature of Reddit, just like you do with Google.

Another option is to use Google, as Google understands your queries better than Reddit and can return better results.

Go to Google. Add 'site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/' next to your queries (without quotes). For example, if I want to find info on eVisa in this subreddit, my query to put in Google is 'eVisa site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/'.

(please find English below)

Hello and welcome to r/Vietnam. Below are some quick guidelines to help you better participate in the community activities.

  • r/Vietnam is now a dual language subreddit. You can use both English and Vietnamese here.
  • Please read the rules before participating, making a submission or comment. You can find them on the Sidebar (Desktop), About tab (Mobile), or this thread
  • Trivial questions that can be answered quickly, or google-able, or without the intention of creating a discussion, should be posted in the sticky thread. Travel/visa questions should be posted there too.
  • r/Vietnam has a Discord server here which aims to be more open and flexible to handle more casual conversations. You can also find both English and Vietnamese channels there.

About the changelog.

I've made some changes to the sub:

  • Re-writing the rules to make them more concise. Adding Vietnamese.
  • Remove some unnecessary flairs.
  • Big change: Switching r/Vietnam to a dual-language subreddit. This is based on the fact that the number of Vietnamese people in this sub has increased significantly. I know this is controversial and some of you don't like this but I think we should just give it a try.
  • Making a Discord server. This is after r/place event that I realized we need a place to handle future events like this better and for the ease of casual, chit-chat type of conversations.

Actually based crimefighting coming out of the police. Video report is particularly hilarious -- they brought hundreds of officers out in tour busses to nab these guys.

Discussion/Thảo luận I have seen a lot of misinformation in this sub. The proposed bill stated that all organ donation registration by children under the age of 18 MUST REQUIRE consent from a legal guardian in writing. Parental or guardian consent is REQUIRED.

Post image
48 Upvotes

The proposed bill text is in https://chinhphu.vn/du-thao-vbqppl/du-thao-luat-sua-doi-bo-sung-mot-so-dieu-cua-luat-hien-lay-ghep-mo-bo-phan-co-the-nguoi-va-hien-7391.

The bill is NOT making it possible for children to sign up as organ donors without parental consent. Quite the literal opposite.

Please kindly read it all before making your arguments. An argument for or against a bill is inadmissible if you have read nothing but social media and "nhỏ không học lớn làm nhà báo" article headlines.

I have seen people in this sub spreading outright misinformation to further their political agenda in broad daylight. I expect better from you all. And from mods too.

Discussion/Thảo luận Solo travelling to Vietnam 🇻🇳 | Dec 1–9

Hey everyone! I’m travelling solo from Dubai to Vietnam from December 1–9. I’ve booked my flights into Hanoi and back from Ho Chi Minh City, but haven’t planned much beyond that yet.

Am looking to meet people with adventurous, open minds who are down to explore, try random things, experience the nightlife, have deep conversations, and make some spontaneous memories along the way.

If you’re travelling around the same time, whether solo or with friends, hit me up! Always down to connect with like-minded people and see where the trip takes us. 🍻

Travel Experience/Du lịch Yoga in Vietnam? Recommendations?

Hi everyone!
I’m a UK-based yoga teacher, and my husband and I recently got married! We’re heading to Vietnam for a month over Christmas for our honeymoon, and I’d love to incorporate some yoga into our travels.
I know yoga isn’t a traditional Vietnamese practice, but as it’s something I love so much, and this trip is an opportunity for us to treat ourselves, I wondered whether anyone has been on a yoga retreat in Vietnam that they’d particularly recommend?
I’m not looking for any specific style of yoga. For me, it’s much more about the quality of the teaching, the atmosphere and setting, and how thoughtfully and skilfully the space is held and facilitated.
Ideally, we’d love to spend a few days on a retreat together, although I’d also be interested in recommendations for excellent yoga teachers, studios or workshops.
We’re planning to travel all over Vietnam, so we’re open to anywhere, whether that’s in the mountains, by the beach or in a city.
I’d be really grateful for any personal recommendations, particularly places you’ve experienced yourself and loved.
Thank you so much! 😊

Travel Experience/Du lịch HCM Immigration Lines are too chaotic.

Just came from Ho Chi Min. Stayed for 5 days as a tourist. Sadly, I don’t want to go back. The immigration lines going in and out as a tourist ruined it for me. 3 hours is dreadful.

Yes I know there is a “fast track”. Guys, this is not an attraction that you should pay for. It’s the least they could do for their tourism.

Travel Experience/Du lịch Thai VietJetAir booking management responds: " Sorry, we are only able to support Thai currency booking at the moment." ???

Hello!

I want to check my booking with VietJetAir from Sapporo to BKK via https://th.vietjetair.com/searchreservation.

But if I enter the details of my booking I get the message "Sorry, we are only able to support Thai currency booking at the moment."

What does that even mean and how can I access my booking?

Interesting observation: If I replace the last letter of my reservation number with something else the site responds with "There is no flight information match, please re-check input value"

That means with the correct number they found my booking, but showing this issue

Any ideas?

Thanks

Discussion/Thảo luận Ha Giang Loop for 4 days, How much to tip the private tour guide?

I’m currently on a two person Ha Giang private tour for 4 days 3 nights. Our tour guide is wonderful, speaks English and is very engaging. He is also my easy rider and albeit driving a bit fast, I feel he is very experienced and safe. The other easy rider is not bad, but also just does the bare minimum.

I am planning on tipping my tour guide 1 million VND and the other easy rider 500,000 VND. Is this too little or too much for a 4 day tour?

Daily life/Đời thường Sad to find out even Vietnam airlines also scams

I've been burned countless times by Vietjet and bamboo but always had a good professional experience with Vietnam airlines. Unfortunately that ended today. Booked tickets on a domestic flight and because of past experiences I screenshot the whole process as proof later.

Day of flight we are checking in and the lady at the counter says I mixed up my wife's last name and first name. I checked my screenshots and nope it was perfect. The website specifically asks for surname and on a separate line given name. It was correct. She kept arguing no it's backwards. I showed her the screenshots on my phone and when caught she then blamed the website saying the website was backwards but I still need to pay to fix it.

After arguing she left and her manager came. I showed her the screenshots and she said that the problem was that I used the English website. Ok so what? She said because I used English the website automatically flips the name. I argued that's not my fault, that's Vietnam airlines fault. She just kept smiling and saying no sir next time you should use vietnamese language. She said "just have your wife book". Ok so what about my name. It will flip my name right? Clearly if the website is broken I shouldn't be charged? She said no I still need to pay to fix the name.

On top of that to make it worse they only accept cash. You can buy a damn ticket with credit or bank transfer but can't pay a small fee? Pretty sure it's going in their pockets.

I'm just done talking to them and now my wife is paying and arguing with them as well in Vietnamese. They tell her this happens to all foreigners and next time just have her book it using vietnamese language.

The fee was only 50k but what a damn rip off. Anywhere else if the company itself screws up they fix it.

So for anyone that is booking on Vietnam airlines based on what these people say if you are booking for someone with a vietnamese name you have to put their last name where it says first name and put their first name where it says surname. This makes no damned sense but whatever.

End of vent.

Travel Experience/Du lịch Do SkyPriority Elite members flying Vietnam Airlines Economy class get access to immigration fast track at HCMC / Tan Son Nhat airport?

Vietnam Airlines mentions on their website regarding SkyPriority benefits: "Priority security and immigration lines: Please be aware that the service may not be available at all airports."

However, it is unclear to me whether this also applies to Economy passengers arriving at TSN.

Thanks!

Culture/Văn hóa Lim Festival, perfume Pagoda and Tet

A couple of festival questions 🇻🇳

We will be in Vietnam in February- during the perfume pagoda festival. I'd like to see the pilgrimage, but we would prefer not to wait an hour to get on a boat and then jostle around with hordes of people inside the cave. Which days would be the ideal balance for that, do you think? I know to avoid the weekends, but would it make significant difference to go on a monday vs. a Tuesday, for example?

For Tet. although I would have to change the itinerary and miss the lim festival 😔, I'm thinking the calm atmosphere in Hanoi might be best for my crowd-averse husband, and it could be cool to wander around the somewhat deserted old town, but I'm afraid everything will be closed. Will we be able to eat?

Alternatively, if it's really awesome, he said he can deal with the crowds – should we do it in Ho Chi Minh instead? Ho chi minh would make the rest of the schedule work a lot better too.

For the Lim festival -Should we go for both days and stay over, or just one day? Is this a "dont miss"? I figure UNESCO usually knows what they're talking about, and I'm enchanted by the idea of them singing back-and-forth from Dragon boats 🥰

Thanks for your guidance! 🙏

Travel Experience/Du lịch Vietnam immigration experience.

Just want to share our own Vietnam 1 week experience from an US POV.

Arrival day at SGN: we bought the Klook fast pass for get into another line and yes, it is worth it. That regular immigration line is insane and it doesn’t move at fast. The downside is that we still have to wait for our luggage’s and by the time we had them, the people in the regular immigration line already caught up.

Have a physical copy of your eVISA. In fact, you have a total of 30 days window no matter what. Use wisely.

Departure day at HAN:
1) we came in early for at least 2h30min and we barely made it. We did NOT buy the Klook fast pass. You did online check in, went into the line to drop off our check bags, got physical boarding pass. All those for a total of 1h.

2) Then we went through a clear screen when you scan your boarding pass. Next, it is the officer lines (one for Vietnamese and one for foreign national) and we waited for over 1h15min. To my understanding, the officer stamps your exit date (we applied for one entry eVISA).

3) we now have the X-ray flit go through. The line was short until they opened a flood of people from another gate. Were they a part of a Fast Pass? 🤷‍♂️

Overall, for the departure day, we arrived at 1000 and finished the immigration until 1215 for a flight at 1230. Please give yourself plenty of time.

Besides that, it is amazing experience. I don’t miss the constant honking, the moped driving on the side streets or anywhere and the pedestrians do not have priority.
Most of transactions needs to haggle. People are superb friendly and many speaks basic English. They also want your “5 stars reviews”

Thanks Vietname for the memories.

Considering doing the Hang En 2 day trek. I’m an active traveller & enjoy these experiences. But I’m worried about weather & if it’s going to be a very specific experience

On the other hand Ninh Binh seems to have variety. It feels a little slower for me but at least I can change it up. Can someone give me some insight? Have I got my facts wrong?
