Sticky Post your questions & inquiries here! - r/Vietnam monthly random discussion thread - F.A.Q

Lưu ý: Đây là thread chủ yếu dành cho người nước ngoài hoặc không nói tiếng Việt đặt câu hỏi. Nếu có thể, hãy trả lời giúp họ nhé.

Please read the 3rd rule of the sub. Don't post your general questions & inquiries outside of this thread as they will be removed.

Lots of your questions have been answered already so make sure you do a search before asking (how-to below).

To keep this subreddit tidy, we have this monthly thread that is open for random discussions and questions. If you post your basic/general questions outside of this thread they will be removed. Sorry, we want to make this sub friendly but also want it to be clean and organized.

Some examples of the questions that should be posted here:

  • Questions that can be answered with just Yes/No
  • Basic questions like "Where can I buy this?"
  • Questions that were asked many times before. Please do your research
  • Questions that are not specific

Tips to quickly find answers for your questions:

Many of your questions may have been answered since people keep asking the same ones again and again. Here is a quick tip to find the answers for yours.

First, have a look at our old sticky threads. A lot of useful information there. A lot of questions have been answered.

You can also use the search feature of Reddit, just like you do with Google.

Another option is to use Google, as Google understands your queries better than Reddit and can return better results.

Go to Google. Add 'site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/' next to your queries (without quotes). For example, if I want to find info on eVisa in this subreddit, my query to put in Google is 'eVisa site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/'.

(please find English below)

Hello and welcome to r/Vietnam. Below are some quick guidelines to help you better participate in the community activities.

  • r/Vietnam is now a dual language subreddit. You can use both English and Vietnamese here.
  • Please read the rules before participating, making a submission or comment. You can find them on the Sidebar (Desktop), About tab (Mobile), or this thread
  • Trivial questions that can be answered quickly, or google-able, or without the intention of creating a discussion, should be posted in the sticky thread. Travel/visa questions should be posted there too.
  • r/Vietnam has a Discord server here which aims to be more open and flexible to handle more casual conversations. You can also find both English and Vietnamese channels there.

About the changelog.

I've made some changes to the sub:

  • Re-writing the rules to make them more concise. Adding Vietnamese.
  • Remove some unnecessary flairs.
  • Big change: Switching r/Vietnam to a dual-language subreddit. This is based on the fact that the number of Vietnamese people in this sub has increased significantly. I know this is controversial and some of you don't like this but I think we should just give it a try.
  • Making a Discord server. This is after r/place event that I realized we need a place to handle future events like this better and for the ease of casual, chit-chat type of conversations.

Actually based crimefighting coming out of the police. Video report is particularly hilarious -- they brought hundreds of officers out in tour busses to nab these guys.

Culture/Văn hóa Would this be a weird Vietnamese name to have?

My vietnamese tutor is asking me to pick a name for myself now, since I will be attending classes in real life as well. At first, I thought maybe about just translating my english name into Vietnamese. However, I am a white American raised in Taiwan, so I also have a Chinese name. I think it is better if I use my Chinese name since it is easier to translate directly, rather than just having a viet-ified english name. If you translate my name from Chinese, my name becomes Thái Dĩ Tường. I think people would just call me Tường. Is this a weird name to have? Should I just go for my english name instead, or maybe just choose an entirely new vietnamese name?

Travel Experience/Du lịch Didn't know Ga Nha Trang had a 20k VIP waiting room

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

Spotted this at Ga Nha Trang. The VIP waiting room (Phong doi tau VIP) is on the platform side, and the price sign is in both Vietnamese and English:

- Regular passengers: 20,000 VND per visit, includes 1 bottle of water

- Tour companies and groups with a contract: 10,000 VND per person

- VIP and Gold/Silver loyalty card holders: free

The entrance and the price sign are in photos 2 and 3.

Do other big stations like Ga Sai Gon or Ga Da Nang have the same thing?

Discussion/Thảo luận Any Grab drivers here? I have a question

• Upvotes

The Grab app says that if I tip there, 100% if my tip goes to the drivers.

Some American companies that have the same business model, including Amazon and DoorDash, reduce the amount that they pay the driver, when the customer tips. Do Grab here do that too? I want to know because I will switch to cash tipping if they do. I want all of my tip to go to the driver

Travel Experience/Du lịch Planning a 12 days Vietnam trip

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’m planning a 12-day trip to Vietnam at the beginning of November during my exchange semester and would love some advice on my itinerary.

I’m thinking of starting in Ho Chi Minh City and making my way north to finish the trip in Sa Pa. Along the way, I’d love to visit Hoi An, Hue, Da Nang, and Hanoi. I also really want to take the heritage train between Da Nang and Hue, as I’ve heard the scenery is amazing.

Additionally, I’d love to include a motorcycle experience somewhere along the route. For example, I was considering riding a part from Hanoi to Sa Pa, although I’m open to other suggestions!

My main concern is the weather, especially in central Vietnam in November. Would you recommend visiting all these places in 12 days, or would it be better to skip some destinations depending on the weather? Which places would you prioritize, and how would you plan the route to make the most of the time?

I’d really appreciate any tips, recommendations, or experiences you can share!

Thanks in advance!

Travel Experience/Du lịch Quiet morning tea and breakfast right outside Da Nang Station. Simple moments like this are my favorite part of traveling in Vietnam

Post image
• Upvotes

Captured this cozy moment while grabbing a quick bite and tea just outside Da Nang railway station. There's something really comforting about sitting roadside, watching the city slow down in the rain before catching my train to Hanoi.

For those who travel through Da Nang often, do you have any favorite local food spots or coffee shops nearby that you always visit?"

Discussion/Thảo luận I have seen a lot of misinformation in this sub. The proposed bill stated that all organ donation registration by children under the age of 18 MUST REQUIRE consent from a legal guardian in writing. Parental or guardian consent is REQUIRED.

Post image
56 Upvotes

The proposed bill text is in https://chinhphu.vn/du-thao-vbqppl/du-thao-luat-sua-doi-bo-sung-mot-so-dieu-cua-luat-hien-lay-ghep-mo-bo-phan-co-the-nguoi-va-hien-7391.

The bill is NOT making it possible for children to sign up as organ donors without parental consent. Quite the literal opposite.

Please kindly read it all before making your arguments. An argument for or against a bill is inadmissible if you have read nothing but social media and "nhỏ không học lớn làm nhà báo" article headlines.

I have seen people in this sub spreading outright misinformation to further their political agenda in broad daylight. I expect better from you all. And from mods too.

Travel Experience/Du lịch What is Cat Ba Island like currently?

Hi, me and my partner are currently in Vietnam and are debating whether to go Cat Ba Island or not. We are not bothered about Ha Long as have heard it’s way too touristy and just loud music, etc. a lot of posts on here about Cat Ba are about a year old but say there is lots of building work etc, and it’s slowly going the same way as Ha Long. How is it currently? Shall we see it now before it loses its charm or has it already happened? Any suggestions for what to do there would be appreciated too :)

Discussion/Thảo luận Solo travelling to Vietnam 🇻🇳 | Dec 1–9

Hey everyone! I’m travelling solo from Dubai to Vietnam from December 1–9. I’ve booked my flights into Hanoi and back from Ho Chi Minh City, but haven’t planned much beyond that yet.

Am looking to meet people with adventurous, open minds who are down to explore, try random things, experience the nightlife, have deep conversations, and make some spontaneous memories along the way.

If you’re travelling around the same time, whether solo or with friends, hit me up! Always down to connect with like-minded people and see where the trip takes us. 🍻

Travel Experience/Du lịch HCM Immigration Lines are too chaotic.

Just came from Ho Chi Min. Stayed for 5 days as a tourist. Sadly, I don’t want to go back. The immigration lines going in and out as a tourist ruined it for me. 3 hours is dreadful.

Yes I know there is a “fast track”. Guys, this is not an attraction that you should pay for. It’s the least they could do for their tourism.

Travel Experience/Du lịch Thai VietJetAir booking management responds: " Sorry, we are only able to support Thai currency booking at the moment." ???

Hello!

I want to check my booking with VietJetAir from Sapporo to BKK via https://th.vietjetair.com/searchreservation.

But if I enter the details of my booking I get the message "Sorry, we are only able to support Thai currency booking at the moment."

What does that even mean and how can I access my booking?

Interesting observation: If I replace the last letter of my reservation number with something else the site responds with "There is no flight information match, please re-check input value"

That means with the correct number they found my booking, but showing this issue

Any ideas?

Thanks

Travel Experience/Du lịch Yoga in Vietnam? Recommendations?

Hi everyone!
I’m a UK-based yoga teacher, and my husband and I recently got married! We’re heading to Vietnam for a month over Christmas for our honeymoon, and I’d love to incorporate some yoga into our travels.
I know yoga isn’t a traditional Vietnamese practice, but as it’s something I love so much, and this trip is an opportunity for us to treat ourselves, I wondered whether anyone has been on a yoga retreat in Vietnam that they’d particularly recommend?
I’m not looking for any specific style of yoga. For me, it’s much more about the quality of the teaching, the atmosphere and setting, and how thoughtfully and skilfully the space is held and facilitated.
Ideally, we’d love to spend a few days on a retreat together, although I’d also be interested in recommendations for excellent yoga teachers, studios or workshops.
We’re planning to travel all over Vietnam, so we’re open to anywhere, whether that’s in the mountains, by the beach or in a city.
I’d be really grateful for any personal recommendations, particularly places you’ve experienced yourself and loved.
Thank you so much! 😊

Daily life/Đời thường Sad to find out even Vietnam airlines also scams

I've been burned countless times by Vietjet and bamboo but always had a good professional experience with Vietnam airlines. Unfortunately that ended today. Booked tickets on a domestic flight and because of past experiences I screenshot the whole process as proof later.

Day of flight we are checking in and the lady at the counter says I mixed up my wife's last name and first name. I checked my screenshots and nope it was perfect. The website specifically asks for surname and on a separate line given name. It was correct. She kept arguing no it's backwards. I showed her the screenshots on my phone and when caught she then blamed the website saying the website was backwards but I still need to pay to fix it.

After arguing she left and her manager came. I showed her the screenshots and she said that the problem was that I used the English website. Ok so what? She said because I used English the website automatically flips the name. I argued that's not my fault, that's Vietnam airlines fault. She just kept smiling and saying no sir next time you should use vietnamese language. She said "just have your wife book". Ok so what about my name. It will flip my name right? Clearly if the website is broken I shouldn't be charged? She said no I still need to pay to fix the name.

On top of that to make it worse they only accept cash. You can buy a damn ticket with credit or bank transfer but can't pay a small fee? Pretty sure it's going in their pockets.

I'm just done talking to them and now my wife is paying and arguing with them as well in Vietnamese. They tell her this happens to all foreigners and next time just have her book it using vietnamese language.

The fee was only 50k but what a damn rip off. Anywhere else if the company itself screws up they fix it.

So for anyone that is booking on Vietnam airlines based on what these people say if you are booking for someone with a vietnamese name you have to put their last name where it says first name and put their first name where it says surname. This makes no damned sense but whatever.

End of vent.
