Alberta Politics One year ago today, Canadian teachers had their Charter rights taken away from them by the UCP using the notwithstanding clause

1.2k Upvotes

Bill 2 was introduced on the 27th last year and passed late in the night, with the UCP introducing procedural amendments to limit debate to one hour per stage to force through the law unreasonably quickly even as NDP MLAs attempted to filibuster it.

Thinking today about what we lost and where things have actually ended up over the last year. (Spoiler, it’s worse.)

edit: *Albertan teachers but it doesn’t take away from the point.

Events Please join us for a RESURRECTION OF THE NATIVE PlANTS!

Save these valuable native plants from their final resting place, a haunting DAY OF THE UNDEAD PLANTS! This is a joint partnership between Edmonton Native Plant Society, Alberta Native Plants Rescue Foundation & ATCO.

Hello everyone! This weekend there will be a plant salvage near Lac St Anne, approximately 65 kms ( 45 mins ) from West Edmonton, exact location coordinates will be given by email to those confirmed attending for this particular rescue. Date is Saturday, October 31st. Please note there might be snow, but we will have people on site regardless.

There will be two shifts to sign up for, one 12-2 and the other 2-4. Please bring a shovel, clippers, and containers to put plants in. Also appropriate footwear and outerwear should be worn, for your safety and comfort as we traverse spooky woodlands and a heart shaped fen.

The site where we are raising plants from the dead is chalk full of wetland plants and woodland plants, and we suggest bringing clippers to take cuttings of the cool woody shrubs in the area. Here is a plant list of the species we have found so far, note this is not exhaustive. We also recommend walking the sedges back from the grave.. By rescuing them and planting them in your garden as ground cover!! Willow stakes should be easy to root as well.

ETA: we will have people on site to identify plants for you!

Discussion Prepare for energy prices to go up

A data center power plant gets an okay in the province. They will be using quite a lot of energy. Prepare for prices to go up. More data centers, higher prices.

Enjoy the fact, especially you conservatives, but every time somebody does a Google search and gets an AI response.. we will all be paying for it. We're so smart.

Question Respite aid inquiry regarding WCB insurance etc.

I wanted to come on here and ask if anyone has experienced something similar or has any advice.
I’m a university student in my early 20s, and I recently started working as a respite aide with a child who has autism. For those unfamiliar with respite care, my role involves supporting the child through activities, play, reading, and other daily routines.
He’s genuinely a great kid, and I enjoy spending time with him. We read books, do activities, and usually have a good time together. However, when he becomes upset or frustrated, he sometimes throws things at me. Usually, it’s something small, like a Lego piece or a marker, so I’ve been able to manage those situations.
Unfortunately, something more serious happened recently. He bit my hand so hard that I started bleeding, and I physically couldn’t pull away.
For context, he was trying to give me food that he was eating but I am not allowed to accept it and also I don’t want to, and refusing the food appeared to trigger his reaction.
The bite was quite severe, and my hand is still hurting a lot. I had to seek medical attention, get blood tests, receive antibiotics, and get a vaccine because human bites, especially those that break the skin, can cause serious infections and complications.
What really concerned me was realizing how physically strong he is and how difficult it was for me to get away when he bit me.
I want to emphasize that I have over five years of experience working with children with disabilities through jobs, practicums, and other opportunities. I’m very familiar with autism, behavioural challenges, and emotional outbursts. I also understand that children can struggle with emotional regulation and communication, and I don’t blame him for having those difficulties.
However, this experience has made me question my own safety at work. I love working with children, and I genuinely care about the kids I support, but I’m also starting to wonder where the line is between managing challenging behaviours and putting myself at risk of serious injury.
What if the behaviour escalates further? What if, God forbid, I get hit or sustain an even more serious injury? I’m a relatively small person, and realizing that I couldn’t physically remove my hand from his mouth was honestly frightening.
I’m also wondering how WCB works in Alberta for respite workers. If you’re injured by a client while working, what does that process look like? What responsibilities does an employer have when it comes to protecting employees from physical injuries?
I’m not looking to blame the child or his family. I just want to understand my rights, what safety measures should be in place, and whether other people working in respite care, disability support, or similar fields have experienced this.
Has anyone in Calgary dealt with something similar? How did you handle it, and what would you recommend?
I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Thank you!

Discussion For those of you who have switched to an all-electric vehicle… how have you found the experience in our winter climate?

We travel to the mountains from Calgary to ski on day trips and head to the Okanagan a couple times of year in both winter and summer. How has the travel been with all electric? Any issues? How has finding chargers been in your travels?

Also, did you have a level 2 charger installed at your house?

Question When are we gonna talk about the youth job market?

This topic is just not being talked about. I graduated a few months ago and I’m still unemployed (save for a summer job). I’m so sick of hearing about this referendum nonsense when real issues are just being kicked aside, both federally and provincially.
Does anyone have any advise as to what to do? I’m going mentally insane being at home all day with nothing to do other than to suck up to companies I don’t give a shit about.

Separatism Referendum Procedural Errors

From Elections Alberta:

Delays in receiving and recording unofficial counts are due to procedural errors made in voting places on Election Day. Multiple voting areas, which are smaller divisions within an electoral division, can be served by a single voting place. Legislative changes made in 2025 require results for Election Day voting to be reported by voting area, rather than by voting place. To support this change and make that reporting possible, all voting place election officers were provided with, trained, and instructed to use one full set of ballot boxes for each voting area served in that voting place. There were many as 11 voting areas in a single voting place.

Several voting places across the province used one set of ballot boxes for all voting areas. Elections Alberta Returning Officers’ teams are able to separate most of the ballots based on the initials of the election officer who issued the ballot, which are contained on the back of each ballot. This is a very time-consuming process. The legislated requirement to hand-count all votes means this process is entirely manual.

Is this why one of the polling stations in Edmonton shut down for a while?

Why did so many polling stations make this mistake? Was training lacking?

I'm especially curious as many people seemed to be wary of special ballots, but based on the delays a polling station in my riding near me did this incorrectly with ballots cast on the 18th.

Question Secret pet rats in Alberta?

I'm working on a story about some niche laws in Canada and the things people do when they encounter them. Alberta's rat laws have been talked about a lot, but I'm wondering has anyone successfully had a secret pet rat in the province? Whether you moved from a different part of the country and didn't know, or knew about it and went ahead regardless.

Not trying to rat on the rat admirers, but I thought it could be an interesting story about things pet owners do for their pets. Please DM me if you want to share it.
