Spending Thanksgiving in San Diego as a French visitor

Hey everyone,

I’m a 26yo French guy visiting San Diego for the first time, and I’ll be landing on Thanksgiving Day (Nov 26). Great timing, I know.

I’ll be traveling solo, and I’d really love to experience an actual American Thanksgiving rather than just grabbing dinner at a restaurant. I know it’s mostly a family holiday, which is actually part of what makes me curious about it.

Does anyone know of any local gatherings, potlucks, or Thanksgiving dinners where a visitor might be welcome?

I’d obviously be happy to contribute, and I could even bring a nice bottle of French wine to share. Not looking for a free meal, just hoping to experience the holiday with some locals and meet new people.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Looking for a fun family farm to go to

Hi everyone! Does anyone know of a family-friendly farm in or within about 10–15 miles of San Diego where we can buy farm products and also see the animals? I’d love to take my son for a visit. Thank you for any recommendations! 🐓🐐🌾

What are the best fancy-schmancy food places in Del Mar or La Jolla that are bus-friendly for a birthday dinner with a $100-$150 budget?

• Upvotes

The title says it all. My birthday is later this week, and I'd like to go somewhere where reservations do not have to be made. I am fine spending up to $150 on food and drinks, even going so far as to splurge $200 total if I really like what they're providing. Ideally, I'd like to order dessert and get the birthday special.

For cuisines that I like, we have...

  • Italian
  • French
  • Japanese
  • Chinese

I am open to trying more, though!

I don't drink, and I don't eat pork, so I hope there will still be fun and tasty options! Additionally, if there's a formal dress code, that's fine, as I have these expensive silk gowns to wear. Naturally, I need to bus it there, so please do not give a place that's not near a bus stop or the trolley station.

Thank you so much, everyone, for your time, consideration, and suggestions!

FYI: I live in La Jolla, but I have only ever survived off of grocery runs to Ralph's. It's about time that I appreciate the local fine-dining scene.

🦷 FREE Dental Cleanings and cleanings! Need a Deep Cleaning or Haven’t Had a Cleaning in Years?

Hi everyone! 😊

Have you been told you need a deep cleaning, but the cost is just too expensive? Or has it been a few years since your last dental cleaning?

I know dental care can be incredibly expensive, especially when it comes to deep cleanings (Scaling and Root Planing), which can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars depending on the treatment needed.

But what if you could receive that dental care for completely FREE? 🦷✨

I’m currently a dental hygiene student, and I’m looking for patients who need dental cleanings, especially those who have been putting off treatment because of financial concerns or haven’t had a cleaning in a long time.

Whether you’ve already been told you need a deep cleaning or you’re simply unsure about the condition of your teeth and gums, I would love to help!

✨ Services may include:
-Comprehensive oral health assessment
-Dental X-rays (if needed)
-Periodontal evaluation and gum measurements
-Regular dental cleaning or deep cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing), depending on your needs
-Oral cancer screening
-Personalized oral hygiene education

💗 EVERYTHING IS COMPLETELY FREE! NO INSURANCE NEEDED!

📍 Location:
Concorde Career College
4393 Imperial Ave., Suite 100
San Diego, CA 92113

⏰ IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Because this is a student learning clinic, appointments typically last 3–4 hours, and depending on your oral health needs, treatment may require multiple visits.

All procedures are performed under the supervision of licensed dental professionals. We will first complete a comprehensive assessment to determine what type of cleaning is appropriate for you.

🦷 Why Is Dental Care Important for Your Overall Health?

Did you know that your oral health is connected to your overall health?

This is especially important for individuals with systemic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory conditions.

For example, diabetes can increase your risk of gum disease, while untreated gum disease can make blood sugar more difficult to manage. Gum disease has also been associated with cardiovascular disease and certain respiratory complications.

Dental cleanings aren’t just about having a beautiful smile. They’re also about maintaining healthy gums and supporting your overall health!

Even if you haven’t had a cleaning in years, it’s never too late to start taking care of your oral health. Everyone deserves a comfortable, judgment-free environment where they can receive the care they need.

📲 INTERESTED? CONTACT ME!
If you’re interested in becoming a patient or would like more information, please feel free to text me directly!
📞 (619) 567-9702

I would be more than happy to answer any questions and help you schedule an appointment! 😊

Even if you don’t need a cleaning yourself, I would truly appreciate it if you could share this with someone who might benefit from free dental care.
Everyone deserves a healthy smile, and finances shouldn’t have to be the reason someone goes without dental care. 🦷✨

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post! 😊

What does SD smell like?

Weird question but I gotta know…

I live in Memphis and it freaking stinks. Literally. So many people here bathe themselves, their cars, their homes/apartments in the most offensive, cheap presumes, colognes, and air fresheners. I can’t handle it. I walked through a parking lot a few days ago past someone with their car door open. Migraine with vomiting the next morning. Got a little better, had to go outside of my apartment yesterday, apartment across from us is leaking air freshener. The breezeway is full of it. This morning, sick again.

Broken down cars here, garbage everywhere - it’s hideous. The heat and humidity, no air flow - it’s a recipe for the most offensive smells. There are a lot of other reasons to leave, too, obviously.

My husband and I want to live where we (i especially) can breathe. We’re not concerned about COL. We don’t make enough now, but we will find a way. I know how to make money but I have to live where I can function.

But what I want to know is, does the air move as well as I imagine there in SD? Does the coast really smell clean and fresh? Do a lot of people out there bathe in Glade like they do here?

San Marcos First-Time Homebuyer - Anyone Successfully Used Down Payment Grants Without Getting a Higher Mortgage Rate?

Hi everyone!

I’m a first-time homebuyer in San Diego County, currently looking to purchase a home in the $650K–$700K range.
Here’s my financial situation:
Annual household income: ~$120,000
Family size: 4
Credit score: ~780
Location: San Diego County (primarily San Marcos/Escondido)
Mortgage quote: 5.5% on a 7/1 ARM through SDCCU
I’ve been researching first-time homebuyer assistance programs, particularly, along with other down payment and closing-cost assistance programs.
Based on my income and household size, I believe I may qualify for certain programs, but I need help confirming eligibility.
Here’s what I’m trying to accomplish:
I’d like to work with a lender or mortgage broker who has actual experience successfully helping buyers obtain WISH grants or similar assistance programs.
However, there’s one important catch.
I don’t want to sacrifice my mortgage interest rate just to receive a grant.
I’m already getting a competitive 5.5% rate on a 7/1 ARM through SDCCU. Ideally, I’d like to find a lender who can offer a similar rate while also helping me qualify for and secure grant funding.
For example, getting $20K–$30K in assistance sounds great, but if it means accepting a significantly higher interest rate, I’m not sure the long-term math works out.
My questions:
Has anyone in San Diego County successfully received first-time homebuyer grant recently?
Which lender or mortgage broker did you use? I’d especially appreciate recommendations from people who actually received funding.
Were you able to obtain the grant while still getting a competitive mortgage rate?
Are there lenders offering 7/1 or 7/6 ARM rates around 5.5% who also participate in these programs?
How much assistance did you actually receive, and were there any hidden costs, higher rates, or restrictions?
Are there other assistance programs I should explore with my income and family size?
I’m not necessarily looking for a zero-down mortgage. I have savings available for the down payment. My goal is to take advantage of any grants I’m eligible for while keeping my total borrowing costs as low as possible.
I’d really appreciate recommendations for lenders or brokers with proven experience in these programs, along with any real-life experiences or lessons learned.
Thanks in advance!

Feedback wanted on hackathon project to check ebike legality plzzzz 😭

I’m a local high school senior in Del Mar and built a free site that checks if a specific e-bike is legal for a specific rider where they ride, using each state’s e-bike law, plus a mods check and a bike finder. It’s for a student hackathon, and I’d love honest feedback on what’s confusing or wrong: https://is-it-an-ebike.vercel.app

Dental cleanings , low cost, no insurance needed

Hello, I’m currently in dental hygiene school and looking for patients that don’t have insurance / or haven’t been to the dentist to get a cleaning in a while. If I am unable to get to them I have several classmates that would be happy to do cleanings as well. The school charges 25 dollar payment for a cleaning. Since it is a school, it will be usually 2-4 appointments and will be very thorough . The initial appointment is a comprehensive assessments where you get radiographs, assessment of your gum health, check your current restorations with our on site dentist, oral cancer screening, and check for plaque and calculus. All of the instructors are registered dental hygienists or dentists. The actual cleaning will usually not start until the second appointment. But if you or anyone you know are interested please let me know! Especially looking for a teenager (18-19 preferably) for one of my requirements as well.

I’ve been living in San Diego for almost 40 years but occasionally I need a cheap hotel (for reasons) so what are some of the least expensive options for motels in Southeast County – El Cajon, Santee, Spring Valley, La Mesa, lemon Grove, etc.?

San Diego screen writers?

I have an idea for a Captain Ron sequel.

Ron>Kurt obviously
Martin> Martin Short
Catherine>Mary Kay Place.
Floriana > Ron’s Cuba wife played by one of the Williams sisters. Owns a crossbow and knows how to use it.
Jaleel White would play Floriana’s brother who’s married to either David Cross or Michael Ian Black.
Eric Roberts would play Ron’s long lost brother.
The villain could be Javier Bardem a modern pirate trying to steal the boat.
Plot: After sailing for many years, Martin and his wife decide to hang it up after finding out their sailboat is worth a fortune. They land in Haiti, where they meet up with Ron, his wife and family who agrees to help them sail the boat to New Orleans to sell it to a broker for tens of millions of dollars.
Any local San Diegans want to write a movie with me?

Helicopter circling over an hour in Mission Valley West, why?

Anyone one know why they’re circling this patch of Friars Rd by the YMCA, just across from the SDPD Western Division police station by the Morena Linda Vista Trolley?

You’d think there wouldn’t be much crime happening right by a police station. But there’s been helicopters circling at all times of the day for months - no explanation.
