It feels like 2004 again with the new browser wars.

Back in 2004 there was what was known as the "second browser war" hotting up with both Firefox and Safari trying to dislodge Internet Explorer. The fact that Mozilla made an ad reflecting that era confirmed my feelings. Now in 2026 I am seeing browser innovation everywhere with browsers switching to fortnightly updates adding more and more features and also adding even more flexibility to the web engines themselves (More CSS and JavaScript capabilities coming in Interop 2026/27). I have multiple browsers installed again since there is so much innovation that I can't keep to one browser for all my use cases. If you're a browser dev you really need to listen to users feedback and sentiment on social media to keep your browser fresh and innovative. Then there is the upcoming alpha release of Ladybird which could really add new competition to by introducing a fourth modern capable engine to the mix.

I have Edge, Vivaldi and Firefox windows open right now and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Question Switched from Google Chrome to Firefox

Soo after using Chrome basically ever since I started using the Internet, I decided to switch firefox. The main reason for this switch is that I wanted extensions and good ad blockers on my Phone (Of course I switched both on my PC and Phone because I want them synced up and everything).

+I tried switching to Brave before but I just don't like smth about it (I can't put my finger on what exactly) and as soon as it stopped blocking ads properly on my phone I threw it into the trash since it doesn't support extensions on mobile.

+Now basically everything I've read about Firefox is positive except for the fact that some sites don't load properly on it. Is this an issue I'll run into very often or something that happens rarely.

+Also is there anything else I need to know about it?

+Basically my complete ecosystem is Google (Phone, Watch, TV, Home...) only my PC and Tablet are Windows. Will that change, away from Chrome going to have an effect on this or will I barely notice it.

Thanks for any tips and information in advance!

One Browser or Five? How Do You Actually Manage Your Browsing Life? 👀

One browser or five? I'm curious how you actually manage your browsing life.

Some people stick to one browser for everything. Others use Chrome for work, Firefox for privacy, Brave for everyday browsing, or Vivaldi for its powerful tab management.

And then there are those of us who seem to collect browsers almost as enthusiastically as bookmarks. 😂

But beyond which browser is best, I'm curious about something else:

How do you actually manage everything across them?

Tabs, bookmarks, saved pages, research, ongoing projects, switching devices... Everyone seems to have their own system.

I'm conducting a small independent research survey to better understand how people use browsers, organize their online activities, and manage information across browsers and devices.

Whether you use one browser on one device, the same browser across multiple devices, or several different browsers, your perspective is equally valuable.

The survey takes about 4–6 minutes. There's no browser ranking, no sales pitch, no product promotion, and no pricing questions.

👉 Take the survey here:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1N8DCDOa3OA1_gUvUmiqVCltBwR2aZN_cFWPLSB6fWCc/viewform

At the end, there's an entirely optional opportunity to express interest in testing an early product related to browsing organization. You don't need to provide an email to participate in the research.

Big thanks to the r/browsers mods for giving me permission to share this! 🙌

Support Is Midori no longer offering 32-bit option?

I just installed AntiX Linux on an old laptop that's 32-bit and I was looking for lightweight browsers. Several people recommended Midori, but on their website I see they only offer downloads for 64-bit systems? Is this correct?

With Apple Intelligence, I'm Seriously Considering Firefox As My Daily Driver

I've always liked using Firefox but felt their AI sucked balls. So ended up using Brave as my privacy browser of choice. Then Brave's AI also started to be garbage. Constantly never providing answers, plus there's a monthly cost associated with it.

But now with Apple Intelligence recently updated and working on desktop and mobile browsers, I've found the maybe Firefox meets all my needs. It's a really great browser.

Opera The simple reason why I use Opera on a Android tablet

The start/home page is just so much better than any other mobile browser and it offers a similiar experience as Safari in that regard which is important since I am about to switch ecosystems from apple to google.

I can not only clean it of any unwanted content or ads but i have all the freedom I need regarding shortcuts with Opera. I roughly need 30 shortcuts and so many browsers like Brave or Edge limit me to 8. I understand 8 might be enough for a phone but on a tablet that is just sad. It is crazy actually. I always go back to the start page when I am done checking one page and only having so few shortcuts would be just terrible.

And it looks really beautiful too. Great icon implementation, not too big or too small. Many other browsers struggle badly to pull icons from the shortcuts links and it just looks ugly and messy. But Opera is doing it even better than Safari.

Opera isn't perfect, I know that. The build in adblock is not the best and the browser lacks extension support on android, which could improve adblock. Battery life I can't really judge, I believe other browsers are slightly better and others slightly worse.

But the overall comfort with the start page is just exactly what I need. It helps me so much with the transition from iPadOS/Safari to android.

On a side note, I liked it the password manager implementation better than most other browsers who somehow like to torture users with an overly complicated or even broken import process. It really is a user friendly browser, just wish they would add extension support in the future.

I can't have 2 profiles opened at the same time. I find it weird since the team mentions in every update that they made the thing more optimized, more efficient, yet my experience doesn't reflect that.

Discussion Kiwi Browser is still the best internet browser for android to browse the web casually

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I have used Kiwi browser since it was actively in development. It was the only proper browser with extension support (the first of its kind for android)....sad that was abandoned but still usable with extensions for casual browsing.

The browser had a proper vision for a UX and is the only android browser where I can easily open and navigate through 30+ tabs.

It is frustrating and sluggish to navigate tabs with firefox, titanium, bare, etc.

I'd say that firefox is a proper alternative to use for work and sign-in to websites.

Elixir is couple of improvements away to be the best android browser. Start with implementing a Home button to toolbar and remove the blinding splash screen in dark mode.

Disable "Always use secure connection" in settings and install the addon from the screenshot to make all the websites work.

Discussion Swell: an open-source Gecko browser where each space is a fully isolated identity (history, passwords and extensions included), in one window

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I’ve been building a browser around one idea: real per-account isolation in a single window, with an Arc-style sidebar on top. It’s an early alpha and I’d love technical feedback from this sub.

The problem. If you juggle work and personal accounts, your options today are:

  • Firefox containers: cookies and site storage are separated, but history, saved passwords, form data, extensions and (by default) site permissions are shared across containers.
  • Profiles (Firefox or Chromium): fully separated, but each profile is its own window, and you can’t mix them in one window.

What Swell does: each space is its own identity inside one window. Cookies, storage, history, saved passwords, form data, extensions, permissions and downloads are all per space. Each space gets its own copy of every extension, and a copy only sees its own space’s tabs. Passwords are encrypted with a per-space key stored in the system keychain. An automated suite checks 17 state stores for cross-space leaks on every change, and deleting a space deletes everything it stored.

How it’s built, since that’s usually the first question here:

  • It’s not a Firefox reskin or a userChrome.css theme. It’s a separate Gecko application with its own window (the same way Thunderbird is built on Gecko), not a modified browser.xhtml.
  • App state (sidebar tree, spaces, per-space data) lives in a Rust core.
  • Engine changes are a small, documented patch queue on Firefox ESR, pinned to a specific revision. The aim is to keep it minimal and upstreamable rather than maintain a deep fork.
  • No telemetry, no crash reporter, no accounts. Nothing is phoned home except an optional daily check for new GitHub releases, which you can turn off. MPL 2.0.

Also included: an Arc-style sidebar (favorites, pinned, folders, today’s tabs), a command bar, devtools, and an importer for Arc sidebars, since Arc shuts down on December 22.

Honest status: alpha. Unsigned builds for Apple Silicon macOS and x86 Linux. No Windows, sync or history view yet. Updates are manual for now, so you’d be responsible for keeping up with security releases while it’s in alpha. That’s the main reason I wouldn’t call it a daily driver for everyone yet.

Things I’d especially like feedback on: the isolation model (what would you test that I haven’t?), and how you’d expect extensions to behave across spaces.

Firn Firn, rebuilt: a calm, free, open-source browser, now a native Mac app (no Electron, no Chromium)

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hi r/browsers. Two weeks ago I shared Firn here, and a lot of you tried it and told me what you thought: what you liked, what was missing, and that you weren't sold on a browser built on Electron and Chromium. Thank you. That feedback shaped what I built next.

Firn is now a native Mac app. I rebuilt it from scratch in Swift, on WebKit, the engine Safari uses. No Electron, no copy of Chromium inside, and the whole download is under 10 MB.

Download Firn for Mac · firnbrowser.com

Why I changed course

Electron was the quickest way to find out whether anyone wanted a browser like this. You answered, with lots of downloads, kind messages, and plenty of honest criticism. But most of what you asked for was something Electron couldn't really give me:

  • Extensions. Electron supports only part of Chrome's extension system, which is why there was no uBlock Origin. WebKit has its own support for web extensions, so this is something I can actually work toward now.
  • Lighter. Electron carries a full copy of Chrome's engine inside the app. Firn now uses the one already on your Mac.
  • A real Mac app. Real menus, Mac scrolling, passwords in your Keychain, and Apple's own Liquid Glass instead of my imitation of it.
  • A path to iPhone and iPad. Every iPhone browser has to use WebKit anyway, so this is the only road to Firn on more than one device someday.

I'm one person, and I can't build two browsers well, so I picked one. Last time I said I was trying to build something that lasts. I don't think I could have on Electron.

If you're on Windows or Linux

I'm sorry. Many of you found Firn on Windows, and I told you Linux was coming. Firn for Windows stops at 0.11.0. It keeps working, but it won't get updates, including security fixes, so please move to a browser that's still updated over the next few months. The old code stays open under the MPL-2.0 in firn-legacy if anyone wants to carry it on. It's not a closed door, but I won't make a promise I can't keep.

What it has

  • Vertical tabs and spaces. Each space is now its own browser, with its own tabs, sign-ins, cookies, and history, so signing in to Gmail in Work doesn't sign you in to Personal.
  • Basecamp: your everyday sites as tiles at the top of each space.
  • Groups instead of pinned tabs. Drag one tab onto another.
  • Lookout opens a link in a preview over the page, so you don't lose your place.
  • Split view: drag any tab onto the page.
  • A command bar on ⌘T.
  • Ad and tracker blocking, on from the start (EasyList and EasyPrivacy).
  • Old tabs tidy themselves into a small box at the bottom of the sidebar, out of the way but easy to find.
  • Passwords saved in your Mac's Keychain, with import from other browsers and password managers.
  • Coming from Arc? Firn brings over your spaces, favorites, and pinned tabs.
  • No telemetry, no account, and no analytics.
  • Signed and notarized by Apple, with updates that ask before installing.

Not there yet

  • Extensions. I'm working toward them, but they're not in 1.0.
  • Sync, iPhone, and iPad. Those come once the Mac app is settled.

And one honest tradeoff: it's WebKit now, not Chromium, so the occasional site built only for Chrome may act up.

How it's made

Same as before: I'm not a professional developer, and I build Firn with Claude Code. I decide what it should be and what it shouldn't, test everything on my own Mac, and there are more than 400 automated tests. It's open source under the MPL-2.0, so you can read every line.

It's free, for macOS 14 Sonoma or later. If you try it, I'd really like to hear what feels off. That's still the most useful thing anyone here could give me.
