Need help with identification
Just moved into a place in the Palos Verdes area of Southern California, and this large cactus is growing in the yard. I’d love to identify it and find out whether its fruit is edible.
It has:
- Tall, branching, tree-like growth
- Approximately 6 ribs on the younger stems
- Blue-green new growth
- A thick, woody base
I’m wondering if it might be Cereus repandus (Peruvian apple cactus), or something else.
Does anyone recognize it? I just wanna know if I can eat the fruit it produces. The previous owner said they never bothered to find out.

When you don't chop an etiolated cactus
The scrawny, corky growth along the top of the soil represents ~20 years of abuse by my grandmother. It was mostly a "house plant". It spent years with basically no light whatsoever, almost no water, and even spent a few years without a pot lying on a shelf with what little potting soil clung to the roots. Never had anything better than a 4" terracotta filled with miracle grow.
When I got it 10 years ago it was just 8" of extremely etiolated cactus with 2 little pups. I decided to keep all that tortured growth as a memento to its hard life. When it got light, water , and nutrients the top grew a lot and it looked like a fuzzy lollipop until it eventually bent over and dangled out the pot.
I'm glad I didn't chop it off. I feel like the ugly corky parts hugging the pot give it a natural look you don't see a lot in cultivation

ID Please
Got this from a friend who needed it gone from her garden. This new pup has amazing red spines. Haven’t seen a flower so it’s making it hard to identify

Opuntia microdasys subsp. rufida
In June 2025, I repotted my little Opuntia microdasys subsp. rufida. At least I think that's what this is, there's also an O. rufida, which is a different species, it's confusing!

Turk’s Head cactus? And help
I’ve had this Turk’s Head (I think) for quite a while now sitting in a west window in Iowa. I water it once very dry, which doesn’t take too long usually. Every couple of weeks ish.
My question is why I can’t get growth in this guy. I swear it’s getting paler, and I’m not sure if I need to increase watering or give it different conditions. Any tips or suggestions?

What happened here?
I am so lost. I had a cactus blossom cacti, the pink top part died and then when I was about to throw it away it started growing a weird off shoot since August? Sorry I don’t know any of the terms about cacti, I just can’t find anything online about it. I just want an explanation please. Thank you🌵
