Discussion Trying to rank chips by heat, mild to Paqui. Is my order right?

Chip makers don't publish Scoville ratings, so I tried ranking by the pepper used and the brand's own heat claims: 1. Cape Cod Sweet & Spicy Jalapeño 2. Barcel Chip's Jalapeño 3. Pringles x Hot Ones Los Calientes Rojo 4. Ruffles Flamin' Hot 5. Takis Fuego 6. Takis Blue Heat 7. Paqui Haunted Ghost Pepper 8. Paqui One Chip Challenge (pulled from sale in Sept 2023)

Should Blue Heat really sit above Fuego? What's missing?

Discussion Curious: is Tim’s seasoning less in larger bags?

I love me some Tim’s Jalapeño chips. Normally I get the 7.5 oz bags at our grocery stores down in Southern California. In the last couple years, I’ve noticed that the seasoning has been hit-or-miss. Sometimes there’s a lot and sometimes there’s very little. But I recently went up to Seattle and got 4.75 oz bags at Target that we don’t have in our Targets in SoCal and the seasoning amount was insane. Now I want to only order those size bags. I also got some 2oz bags from the deli and noted even MORE seasoning.

Does anyone have any personal observations on whether I am right? Like do they just stick a fixed amount of seasoning per bag and then it’ gets diluted if the amount of chips is bigger? If so I feel gypped haha and I feel strongly that Tim’s should address this inconsistency LMAO

And no I do not take everything in life seriously, except apparently Tim’s Jalapeño chips

Recommendation Costco Buy Today

Post image

No idea why it's "Nashville Fried Chicken" instead of hot chicken because they're clearly spicy but whatever. These go well together, I'd buy em again. Obviously don't recommend if you hate pickle.

I've seen the pickle ones on their own but never the chicken ones.

Discussion Where did your country's "default" chip flavour come from? Some surprising origin stories

I've been reading up on how each country ended up with its "default" chip flavour. A few facts surprised me:

  • Japan started with seaweed, not salt. Koikeya's first potato chip in 1962 was Nori Shio (seaweed salt), chosen because it was a flavour people already knew. Calbee came later: Usushio (lightly salted) in 1975, Norishio in 1976 and Consommé Punch in 1978. Those three are still the backbone of the shelf.
  • Calbee keeps 50+ potato chip varieties on sale and releases around 100 flavours a year once limited and regional editions are counted. That's why the konbini shelf always looks different.
  • Mexico's Sabritas began on a bicycle. Pedro Marcos Noriega started it in Mexico City in 1943, delivering snacks by bike. The name blends sabrosas (tasty) and fritas (fried). Takis came much later: invented in 1999 and first sold as "Taquis". The purple-bag Fuego arrived in 2006.
  • Korea's Honey Butter Chip (Haitai, August 2014) caused actual shortages. Stores ran out, Haitai ran its factory around the clock, and bags were resold online at inflated prices. In Oct–Nov 2014 it topped snack sales at GS25, CU and 7-Eleven.
  • Korea's chip market was a two-brand fight before that. Nongshim launched the country's first fresh-potato chip in 1980. Orion answered with Poca Chip in 1988 and overtook Nongshim in 2000.

What's the "default" flavour where you live, and is there a story behind it? I'd especially love to hear from places I know little about (Nordics, Middle East, South America).

I fell in love with this brand last time I was in Paris. I brought 4 different flavors home in my checked bag and all but one popped open during the flight. I still ate all of them.

I picked this up at a bougie wine shop in McLean, Va., yesterday. The flavor was one I hadn't seen in France. They were potatoey and creamy with a hit of garlic. Tasted just like mayonnaise sauce. I dip fries in mayo and these reminded me a lot of that. I will be going back to that wine shop for more!!
