Announcement Low Quality Posts in the Subreddit

Hi all,

Through out the last 2 years or so, we’ve been seeing more low-effort or repetitive posts, questions that are already answered in our community wiki, and posts that are assigned the wrong flairs. We know that many of you have also raised your voice regarding this topic as well.

With that in mind, we’ve made a few changes to help keep discussions organised, keep the subreddit clear of basic inquiries and to reduce some of the repetitive content.

What will be different?

  • Mandatory Post Flairs: Users will be required to assign a flair to their post before being able to post, we have many different flairs that fit 99% of all posts so please do use them. We believe this will help us reduce and filter low-effort posts.
  • Pre-post Automations: Certain keywords, and selected flairs will display a warning / reminder message. For example selecting 'The Cyprus Problem' Flair will display a message saying that this flair is reserved for issues pertaining to the Cyprus issue / division & occupation.
  • Automoderator Adjustments: Changed the AutoModerator code to better identify such posts & comments and also to flag reported submissions. If your post wrongly gets filtered please reach out to us, as we may adjust some rules in the future based on how it works.

We’d like your feedback

Please help us moderate r/Cyprus better:

  • What would you like to see more of on r/Cyprus?
  • Are there recurring types of posts or discussions that you think are making the subreddit less useful?
  • Are our rules and post flairs clear enough?
  • Do you have other suggestions for improving the subreddit without making it unnecessarily restrictive?

Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.

Thanks to everyone who contributes thoughtfully and helps make this community a little bit more fun to be in.

Off-Topic Shoutout to Meowmeow Cat litter

I am so glad I came across this post https://www.reddit.com/r/cyprus/comments/1wdgetd/conversation_over_the_litter_box/ from u/Playful_Lie5951.

After reading their story I decided to give the product a try, since I wanted to support a Cypriot business and a new venture, and I have to say it's much better than anything else I've ever tried.

I have two cats and consume a looot of litter. I have always bought natural litters (mostly from wood fiber), but even the best ones would always produce a lot of dust and my cats would get residue stuck between their paws and bring it all over the place. Clumping and odour control is also much better than other products. I couldn't recommend it enough.

Thank you u/Playful_Lie5951 for creating this wonderful product, I hope your company will thrive in the future.

I have to thank Reddit for this one, would have never found it otherwise! Cheers.

Help Any casual chess nights in Nicosia/Larnaka?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!
Does anyone know of any casual chess nights or meetups happening in Nicosia/Larnaka during the week or on weekends?
I’m looking for something relaxed where I can grab a beer, have a chat, and play a few games with random people of different skill levels.
Not really looking for a competitive chess club or tournaments, just a friendly atmosphere where amateur players can meet up and enjoy some chess.
Any recommendations would be appreciated. Cheers!

Question Cyta Fiber internet installation

Going from Cablenet to Cyta Fiber. Cyta visited our house today, and after an inspection, they informed me that I have to contact an electrician to run the cable from the roof to where we want it.

Is this normal? I would expect that when you take a service from a provider, they will install it.

Tourism Moutain day without much walking

Hello beautiful people of Cyprus.

I have been visiting this beautiful island for 6 years in a row this time of the year, and I'm only going to the beach and visiting cities, mainly between Lemesos and Paphos.

Unfortunately this year the weather for the first time is not warm and sunny enough for me and my gf to just melt at the beach, so we were wondering what else we could do.

One thing we always wanted to do is explore the mountains and mountain villages in Cyprus. The problem is that we don't have any hiking gear with us, not even proper shoes. What are some mountains that are hopefully the best we can visit and ideally be accessible by car so we don't have to hike that much?

Sorry for asking tourist questions, but what I'm looking for is not mentioned in any post I could find not wiki.

Thank you in advance

Education International student stuck in home country waiting for a Cyprus student visa since September. can I still join university this semester?

I applied to Neapolis University Paphos last December for the LLB university of reading programme. I already paid the tuition and visa fee and my visa documents were delivered to their office on 17th August and submitted to the migration department in early September.

Classes started on October 6th and Im still stuck at home waiting for my entry permit.
I’ve emailed them numerous times about the visa they keep telling me they’re still waiting and will let me know, and that it’s the government’s fault and they’re actively chasing the migration department. I was also told students will be accepted until the week commencing 23rd October. It’s now 26th October and I still have no permit or clear answer about whether I can join late.

I also wanted access to my moodle to at least study and catch up from home but IT told me my registration is still pending and admissions didn’t reply to my emails when i asked them why.

I’ve been out of education for two years and I was supposed to be in uni by now I really can’t afford to lose another year. Is anyone else waiting for their Cyprus student visa or entry permit, particularly from NUP? Idk what to do every time I email them they ignore the list of inquiries i sent them and they just reply with the most generic answer ignoring my questions completely. Will I still be able to join this semester? If not then what happens to the tuition I paid?

Im honestly very lost on what to do at this point, so any advice or similar experiences would mean a lot.

EU high school spending and PISA scores

Post image
87 Upvotes

It is an unfortunate truth that I share with you today my friends.

We allocate approximately a value of 4.75-5.1% of our GDP to public education (accounting for roughly 12.5% to 13.2% of total government expenditure, which is well above the European Union average), according to the CEIC. )

Despite all this money going to education, we seem to fail when it comes to the PISA exam (Programme for International Student Assessment - testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students in mathematics, reading and science, often in novel contexts and problems that require extrapolation and not deliberate memorization.

Over 60% of students score below basic reading comprehension levels & we rank among the lowest performing EU countries in basic scientific literacy while on mathematics we rank below level 2... level 2 of PISA is seen as "functional literacy" a metric deemed the baseline for an effective and productive participant of modern society.

The report also found that 43.5% of Cypriot students failed to reach the basic level of proficiency across all three assessed subjects, compared with 19.7% across OECD countries. Shocking!

How do you, redditors, explain this phenomenon whereby we throw such disproportionate amounts of money on education only to fail hard? Where did we go wrong?

Question Volunteering in Limassol

I moved to Limassol couple of months ago and want to do some volunteer work. I could work with kids, cats, hospitals, schools, cultural events, even prison. I've searched throughout websites, sent emails to municipality, ngo-s, no reply from anyone.

I am familiar with publicly/online available info, is there anything you know or do which I might have missed?

Question Visiting Cyprus with a family member who uses an electric wheelchair. How accessible is it?

Hi everyone!

I'm considering a family trip to Cyprus with my father, who uses an electric wheelchair, and I'd love to hear about your experiences with accessibility on the island.

We're mainly thinking of Larnaca, Nicosia and possibly Paphos or Limassol, but we're flexible about the itinerary. I'd also be interested in visiting the northern part of the island if it's practical.

I've been doing some research and love the idea of combining historic cities, coastal promenades and exploring different parts of the island. What I'm trying to understand is how accessible the overall experience is in practice: getting around town, navigating pavements and everyday streets, finding places to eat and simply enjoying the day without too many obstacles.

We've travelled together to places with accessibility challenges before, and while it's possible, the experience can sometimes become frustrating and unpleasant for everyone, rather than an enjoyable family holiday. So I'd really appreciate honest opinions, even if the reality isn't particularly positive, to help us decide whether Cyprus would be a good fit for this trip.

Thanks so much for any advice or personal experiences!

Starting a business in Cyprus and confused about VAT?

Some important questions to consider:

- When must a business register for VAT?
- How do Cyprus VAT returns work?
- When does VIES reporting apply to EU business transactions?
- What records should you keep for purchases and sales?
- How do reverse-charge transactions work?

VAT treatment depends on the type of transaction, the customer and where the supply takes place.

Which Cyprus VAT topic would you like us to explain first?

Please share general questions without posting confidential business information.

History/Culture What was Cyprus like under the British?

Does anyone have any stories from their Pappou or Yiayia. I’m curious but my grandparents passed away before I started actually taking an interest in Cyprus and my heritage. I have heard about the 60s and 74 from my parents but what about the 50s and before that any stories?

Off-Topic Everything your vehicle needs. In one app. Made for Cyprus 🇨🇾

Thumbnail
autocare.com.cy
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I recently launched AutoCare CY, a mobile app built specifically for drivers in Cyprus.

The idea is to keep everything related to vehicle ownership in one place instead of relying on notes, calendars and memory. Being a car enthusiast myself, I found it hard to keep up with my family's cars ownership and maintenance so i decided to build myself this app specifically for Cyprus.

With AutoCare CY you can:

• Track MOT, Road Tax and Insurance expiry dates

• See at a glance whether your vehicle is Road Legal

• Track oil changes, tyres, minor and major services

• Get reminders based on date and mileage

• Keep mileage, documents and service history

• Track maintenance and legal document costs

• See real time fuel prices, estimated consumption and running costs for your vehicle

• View weekly, monthly and yearly fuel costs

• Get vehicle insights and reminders

And more.

App Details:

• Manage up to 5 vehicles per account for families

• One time vehicle setup using your mobile camera

• Use the app in English, Greek, Russian, Romanian or Bulgarian (for now).

It supports petrol, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.

Available for both Android and iOS.

I’d really appreciate feedback from the Cyprus community about this app — especially ideas for features that would make it more useful for drivers here.

AI disclosure: AutoCare CY uses AI-assisted OCR to extract vehicle specific information from vehicle documents - this is during first time setup. Also uses Ai and vehicle data to provide advice based on your vehicle.

Many thanks!

Philippos

Construction work (renovation) and constant noise

I recently moved out of Limassol to a new and more rural/suburban neighborhood. Two houses away, someone started to renovate. They gutted the house and are building a swimming pool. It looks like everything will be made new plus that pool is being added. But they are working Monday to Sunday from 7am to around 9pm. Every day. Is this even allowed? I understand that the work needs to be done (the house was not the greatest looking, but it was also empty) but I question the 14 hours of noise every day...even today, Sunday, they started around 6:45...
