I use AI, so what? I made my free open source project come true after 15 years of dreaming it. The objective: Save old hardware from being thrown away. A <10MB RAM desktop environment.

I am making the lightest desktop environment ever made. Just one reason: Save old hardware for being thrown away.

I work from 9 to 24 on boring office projects as a software developer, I have 12 years of experience. I now can use AI + my engineering skills to build with me dream projects that wouldn't be possible without a lot of free time.

The objective is to save old hardware like my N2808 notebook, and my step father samsung laptop he still uses. I see a lot of people struggling with desktop environments because all of them are (light + looks like crap) (looks decent + not light enough) so I want to take both worlds and make the most beautiful fastest desktop environment.

This is not meant to be just a random project, this has a real purpose to recycle old hardware instead of throwing it away.

Microsoft, Adobe, and all these companies are still increasing system requirements, to the point that nowadays running a windows 11 desktop is like running a videogame in the background (4gb ram usage, hell...)

I always was the spectator, looking how everything got more expensive in memory, while established projects like icewm, xfce and xlqt did not change much from their "old school" ui, which I like of course, but still did not provide enough savings to justify.

Support the project. Support recycling hardware. Support the future of computers to be clean, lean and modular and not bloated.

I made a tool that converts an image into actual chess games

Hey guys!

I made a simple tool that does something pretty cool. It takes an image and converts it into actual chess boards you can zoom in with actual games from the Lichess database. It can also generate arbitrary legal chess positions with different levels of "play-ability" which is much faster than database indexing/searching. Try it out:

https://github.com/ilyamiro/chesser

P.S. This is entirely "vibe-coded" so beware my power of using Claude code. But I really liked the idea and knew that id never do it myself.

Quality of Posting in Here

So is it just me, or is this sub sort of obnoxious lately?

My feed is getting clogged up with people's vibecoded shit, with the comments all being exactly the same.

It's written in Rust.

It's another Chromium Browser.

It's a fuckin' file manager.

All of it vibecoded, or, ahem "tastefully assisted by AI", which then gets everyone arguing about AI.

It's either that, or it's a dude and his sock puppets complaining about getting tossed from r/opensource, on some sort of crusade against the moderators over there.

Is the content of this sub living up to its description?

Mise browser 1.3.0: Free and open source security & privacy focused web browser

Post image
0 Upvotes

k

Hi all,

It's been a couple of weeks since I first mentioned Mise browser here in the r/foss community.

A lot of work has been done on Mise browser since.

I am not claiming that it is the perfect web browser and you need to switch right now. That would be a complete lie. Instead, I am looking for people to give it a proper spin on Linux, Windows, MacOS and be willing to share a feedback or report issues.

If you like it and keep using it for whatever reason, I'll be happy. If you dont like it and uninstall it, no hard feelings.

For a single dev with a little contribution from a different user(which I am thankfull for) it is hard to see some problems even while daily driving it.

Some people will dislike it just because it is an Electron app, but Mise will not use any more resources then your standard browser. Probably a bit less as it is developed for low-end fan-less systems in mind.

Find out more on:

Web: https://rakosn1cek.github.io/Mise-browser

GitHub repo: https://github.com/Rakosn1cek/Mise-browser

Just to be straight upfront. I think it is fair to say that I use Antigravity as a tool in development.

Mise and security updates:

I am tracking upstream Electron and Chromium releases and audits dependencies twice weekly. Critical security vulnerabilities bypass the weekly release schedule entirely. They are rectified immediately, and published as patch releases (e.g. v1.3.1) to ensure automated package builds deploy without delay.

Thank you for your time.

My first OpenSource Vibecoded app - SDrive

Hello Reddit!!

I've been working on a desktop software called SDrive and wanted to share it here, initially something to replace other commercial software that I had to use but had worries on privacy. šŸ¤”

It lets you mount cloud storage and remote servers as drives or folders, so you can open, edit and save files directly from your file manager.

It supports Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Nextcloud, SFTP, WebDAV, SMB and S3-compatible storage, among others. You manage the connections from one window or the system tray.

It's completely free and open source, with no telemetry at all for now.

There are still plenty of provider and account combinations I haven't tested, so I'd love to hear how it works with your setup. Bug reports and suggestions are welcome, but understand I can only work on that in my free time.

You can grab it here: https://github.com/anderbytes/SDrive

Tell me what you think.

Shipping a skill is the tutorial. Maintaining it is the actual game.

New model. Updated tool. Different reference docs. One innocent instruction edit.

At what point does ā€œthis skill worksā€ become ā€œthis skill worked in a very specific historical momentā€?

I’m building skillEd to help rerun evaluations and compare results as things change: https://github.com/DeadHead04/skillEd

What should a minimum maintenance checklist include before releasing a skill update?

I’d love feedback through issues and focused PRs. And if the project helps, a star is appreciated. The useful part is making the evidence better.

Open source linter to avoid UI bugs when using coding agents (Claude Code, Codex,... and JS compatible)

As the title, I don't understand why frontier model at this stage, make jaw dropping 3D designs, complex systems, yet still making these mistakes like text flows out of the card margin, text with same color with background,...

Processing img dgxnv6zcg1yh1...

So I created renderlintĀ https://github.com/ngocanhnckh/renderlintĀ so far it help me avoids lots of corrections and mistakes in one shot. Idea is simple, just check and stress all the frontend pages with more text when compiling in a virtual browser in different responsive screen size (programmatically not by AI vision or text capability) then point out errors like a compilation error, not letting Claude Code to ship sloppy stuff before they fix all of that. I also allows it to add like an important tag on places that intentionally have misplacement or contrast less color

But I believe it's not perfect yet, can improve more and help even more people here, so I'm asking for more feedback and PRs so we can enjoy bug free frontend vibing :D

I wanted Google's Circle to Search on Windows, so I made my own

Hey everyone!

I've been working on a project called OpenCircle, basically my attempt at bringing Google's Circle to Search to Windows and Linux.

Just released v0.1.1!

The idea is pretty simple. Press a shortcut, circle anything on your screen, and choose what to do with it. You can search it using Google Lens in your browser, select and copy text, translate it, or ask AI about it.

One thing I really care about is giving users control over their data.

The app is completely free and open source, with no accounts or telemetry.

Translation works offline by default, and for AI you can use your own local model, bring an API key for providers like OpenAI or Claude, or just use Google AI Mode in your browser without an API key.

Basically, you choose which services to use and what gets sent outside your PC.

I actually removed quite a few things from the main interface in this release. Some features I added in v0.1.0 just weren't good enough yet, so instead of pretending everything was ready, I moved them into an optional Labs section until I can improve them.

For v0.1.1 I focused more on getting the basics right.

Text selection is much faster on Windows now, translation is around 2.7x faster in my tests, and I reworked the selection controls and UI to make everything feel less cluttered.

It's written in Rust, and Windows is currently the main supported platform. Linux is available too, but still in preview.

There are definitely still things to fix, but I'm pretty happy with how this version turned out.

GitHub: https://github.com/AmerAlreyahi/OpenCircle

Release v0.1.1: https://github.com/AmerAlreyahi/OpenCircle/releases/tag/v0.1.1

Would love to hear what you think, especially if you give it a try. Bug reports and suggestions are very welcome!

What CLA service are you using for your OSS projects?

I'm looking for alternate solution to cla-assistant for our GitComet project...

CLA assistant is just insanely slow and new contributors are often facing issues with it....

for example: https://github.com/Auto-Explore/GitComet/pull/682

How can it take minutes to load a static page!?... 😠

Handy: offline voice typing for Windows, macOS and Linux (MIT)

Sharing Handy for anyone looking for a free, open-source dictation app. Press a shortcut, speak, and it transcribes into the text field you're using.

You download a speech model first, then transcription runs locally. It supports Windows, macOS and Linux, and the code is MIT licensed.

https://github.com/cjpais/Handy

I'm not affiliated with the project. I'm especially interested in Portuguese dictation with English programming terms mixed in. Has anyone tried it for that? Which model worked best for you?

Workhorse: a durable task queue inside PostgreSQL

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

What it is

Workhorse runs background tasks for your application and keeps every task in PostgreSQL. If your application already uses PostgreSQL, you add Workhorse and you need nothing else to run background jobs. Workers in 8+ languages all use one SQL protocol, and they share one dashboard. The code is open source under the Apache License 2.0.

What it does

  1. The dashboard lives inside your application. You mount it at a path such as /workhorse, in any of the eight languages. It uses your application's own login, so you do not run a second admin system. It shows tasks, attempts, checkpoints, schedules, queues, workers, failures, and health for every machine.
  2. A stopped worker does not lose work. A Workhorse worker holds a lease on each task. If the lease expires, another worker takes the task. A fence token stops the old worker from overwriting newer work if it comes back.
  3. Concurrency and rate limits. The limits live in the database, so they apply to all workers together. You can also set them for each key, not only for a whole queue. This is very useful for the rate limit of an external API.
  4. Long tasks do not start over. A handler can save checkpoints. If the task runs again, it skips the parts that already finished. It can also wait for a timer or a signal without holding a worker slot.
  5. Durable waits without a second service. Timers, signals, and child tasks need only PostgreSQL. There is no workflow server to run, and you can start the work inside your own database transaction.
  6. Many languages, one queue. A Go service can enqueue a task and a Python worker can run it, on the same queue.

How I build it

I use AI coding tools to build Workhorse, and want to say it openly. Each change goes through review and CI. Each language SDK runs its tests (more than 500+ test files by far) against a real PostgreSQL database. Each design decision is recorded, and there is more than 100 of them. You can read why Workhorse works the way it does, not only what it does.

When it is not the right tool

I want to be honest about this too:

  • If your application does not use PostgreSQL, Workhorse is not for you.
  • Workhorse shares your PostgreSQL database. If you want your queue to scale on its own, a separate broker can suit you better.
  • Like most task queues, Workhorse delivers each task at least once. It is a good idea to give your external calls idempotency keys.

Workhorse is in public beta. You can use it for evaluation and early production.

Fun fact, if you look closely, our horse logo is not pixel perfect. Those are scars, every good workhorse should have a few.

I built TableCraft, an open source database IDE inspired by DataGrip

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I’ve used DataGrip for years and love the care in its small details. TableCraft is our attempt at a database IDE in that same spirit, for PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite and Redis on macOS, Windows and Linux.

Highlights:

  • DataGrip’s keymap and layout
  • Schema-aware completion, including join conditions from foreign keys
  • A table editor that previews SQL before committing
  • Large results that stay responsive
  • Import your connections from DataGrip or TablePro

It’s MIT licensed and still early, so feedback is very welcome.

OpenChatMix - open source replacement for SteelSeries GG on Windows

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I made an open source app that replaces SteelSeries GG + Sonar on Windows. GG is a big closed app with a bunch of background processes, and I just wanted ChatMix and EQ without all that.

  • MIT license
  • Plain C++ and Win32, no Electron, no account
  • One portable .exe, about 2.3 MB
  • Talks to the headset directly over USB HID. For the older Arctis models the protocol info comes from HeadsetControl and the Linux kernel driver
  • Works with any headset as a mixer and EQ through virtual cables, and for mic processing too
  • VST2/VST3 plugins, optional AI noise suppression with DeepFilterNet

I made it together with AI: Claude Opus 5.5 (Extra effort).

Ideas, bugs, PRs - all welcome on GitHub or here in the comments.

I built a screen-aware voice assistant for the Mac — free on-device voice, no OpenAI needed

Mac voice assistants bug me because they demand a cloud login or an OpenAI key right away. So over a few months I built Odysseus — a menubar companion that works local-first and lets you plug in whatever brain you want:

- Hear you: push-to-talk or hands-free "Hey Odysseus", transcribed on-device (Parakeet or Apple Speech — nothing leaves your Mac)

- See your screen: asks for screenshots only when you actually need vision; otherwise it never touches the capture API

- Answer out loud: free Microsoft Edge neural voices (or ElevenLabs / Deepgram if you bring your own key)

- Brain: my default is DeepSeek via the OpenCode Go subscription ($10/mo) — no OpenAI at all. Apple Intelligence (fully offline) or Claude keys work too

- Agent mode: background sessions that read your screen and reply with next-step suggestions again ... unfortunately can't edit files yet, that's the roadmap top item

Fully MIT, macOS 26+, no cloud login ever — source is public.

Honest state of it: ad-hoc signed (macOS will do its per-month re-consent dance for screen recording, it's the OS not me — the pipeline will get Developer ID when I'll pay Apple), agents answer but they can't run shell yet, only Apple-Silicon Macs, and edits to files aren't here yet. Everything else works end-to-end, and every push to main ships a new signed DMG automatically via Actions.

DMG + source: https://github.com/mubtikr/odysseus (Releases tab)

What would make you actually install this? I'd love to hear what feature would be the killer to comfortable daily-use before I polish it further
