Is the MOD of this sub right that of you use closed tools to develop something it doesn't count as floss anymore? Is it embarrassing they don't know what floss is?

Post image

Seems borderline ridiculous but curious on everyone else's take.

Do you really think a mod who thinks this won't enforce a rule like this on the sub when the user is already blocking AI users on other subs?

Do you think a person with this opinion should be allowed to continue to moderate this sub in light of the destruction they are wrecking on r/opensource ?

I use AI, so what? I made my free open source project come true after 15 years of dreaming it. The objective: Save old hardware from being thrown away. A <10MB RAM desktop environment.

I am making the lightest desktop environment ever made. Just one reason: Save old hardware for being thrown away.

I work from 9 to 24 on boring office projects as a software developer, I have 12 years of experience. I now can use AI + my engineering skills to build with me dream projects that wouldn't be possible without a lot of free time.

The objective is to save old hardware like my N2808 notebook, and my step father samsung laptop he still uses. I see a lot of people struggling with desktop environments because all of them are (light + looks like crap) (looks decent + not light enough) so I want to take both worlds and make the most beautiful fastest desktop environment.

This is not meant to be just a random project, this has a real purpose to recycle old hardware instead of throwing it away.

Microsoft, Adobe, and all these companies are still increasing system requirements, to the point that nowadays running a windows 11 desktop is like running a videogame in the background (4gb ram usage, hell...)

I always was the spectator, looking how everything got more expensive in memory, while established projects like icewm, xfce and xlqt did not change much from their "old school" ui, which I like of course, but still did not provide enough savings to justify.

Support the project. Support recycling hardware. Support the future of computers to be clean, lean and modular and not bloated.

SUB/WAVE: self-hosted internet radio from your own music library, with a DJ that talks between tracks (MIT)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

SUB/WAVE turns your own music library into a radio station. Everyone tuned in hears the same thing at the same time. There's no skip button and no shuffle, just a DJ who picks the next song and talks in between: the time, the weather, what's coming up next.

The video is about the DJ's voice. You can run the voices on your own machine, plug in a voice server you already have, or use a cloud service. You can even clone a voice from a short clip. If a voice fails, another one takes over, so the station never goes quiet.

You can have several DJs, each with its own voice and personality, and schedule them into shows across the week. A host can bring on guest co-hosts and banter with them. Listeners can ask for a song in plain words, like "something upbeat" or "anything by Radiohead", and the DJ introduces it on air. Between songs the DJ can do the news, the weather or a segment you write yourself. It waits for a song's sung intro to finish before it talks, and the music dips under its voice.

The self-hosted version is free, MIT licensed, and has everything.

Repo: https://github.com/perminder-klair/subwave

Listen to the demo: https://www.getsubwave.com/listen

All of these features are in the README: personas, scheduled shows, co-hosts, plain-language requests, skills, vocal detection and ducking.

Megathread for discussion related to recent events

Creating this megathread in hopes of reducing "i was banned from ___" and recent open source drama posts in subreddit while still allowing discussion around it,

Making posts about this stuff is still allowed but i would rather if it could be put here so the main subreddit is not having the same type of posts over and over again

The head mod of the subreddit has said this about an hour ago:

https://www.reddit.com/r/foss/comments/1xg3k2o/comment/19rp2205wwrur/

Hey guys, I promise I'm still here. I just replied in a different thread I think.

My head's been under a rock so I have little understanding of what's going on. Regardless, my commitment is still to create a welcoming community that embraces different opinions. I need some time to gather myself and understand what's going on, then hopefully get to the bottom of this.

As for me i have no say in removing mods and its up to the head mod, i am here to keep the subreddit about FOSS and making sure people follow rules

I made a pretty, lightweight file searcher and launcher for Windows.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Introducing Heimdall, a glassy launcher for Windows. And yes, it's faster than Everything.

Press F5 and type. It finds apps, every file, open windows, calculates sums and web searches.

Native Rust, under 2 MB, ZERO telemetry. Free and open source.

EDIT: Thank you for the great reception! I just published the 1.0.1 release with some more QoL and fixes for a few annoying quirks. It's also faster than before, and now beats Everything on every search metric. It's also come to my attention that the link doesn't show up for some reason, so you can get it here:

TypeType: a self-hosted video app for YouTube, NicoNico and BiliBili

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey (˶ᵔᗜᵔ˶)ノ゙

I'm the creator of TypeType. It's an open-source video app you can host yourself for YouTube, NicoNico, and BiliBili. With one instance, your accounts, subscriptions, history, playlists, watch progress, and settings stay in your own Postgres database not in some big corporation's database deciding what you should watch next.

I built it because I wanted my own front end for the videos I watch, and I was tired of losing my subscriptions and history every time I switched devices. It started as a small thing for me, then people started using it, and now I spend a lot of nights working on it. ^

How it works

It's a web app and a native Android app, both connected to the same instance. Behind the scenes, there's a Kotlin/Ktor server, a React frontend, PostgreSQL, Dragonfly for caching, Garage for downloads, a small Node service for YouTube tokens, and a Go downloader. Only the web container is exposed; everything else stays on the Compose network.

Install

One command. It creates the stack, generates the secrets, picks free ports, sets up Garage, and then asks before starting anything:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/TypeType-Video/TypeType/main/scripts/install-stack.sh | bash

The first account you create becomes the admin account. After that, you can close registrations if it's just for you and your friends.

What's inside :)

  • Search across the three services, one library, subscriptions, playlists, favorites, and watch progress
  • Playback controls for quality, audio tracks, and subtitles, with MSE + SABR
  • Video and audio downloads to local or S3-compatible storage
  • SponsorBlock, DeArrow, content blocking, imports, and OIDC
  • Profiles, parental controls, and channel allow-lists
  • An Android app for Android 6+, with no Google Play Services, F-Droid and APK builds, plus a big-screen UI for the couch
  • An optional recommender you can run yourself (experimental, off by default, and uses about 1.2 GB of RAM)

Hardware

2 vCPU / 4 GB RAM / 20 GB SSD is enough for one or two people. Go with 4 vCPU / 8 GB RAM / 40 GB SSD if the whole family will use it.

ARM64 works too a Pi 4 or 5 with 4 GB of RAM and an SSD runs a small instance just fine.

Licenses

Because people ask: the stack, frontend, player, token service, and docs are MIT. The server and Android app are GPL-3.0; the downloader is GPL-3.0-or-later. So, not all MIT. ^

AI

Want to know TypeType's current position on AI? Check this.

Community

Honestly, the best part of this project is the community. People are really friendly: they report bugs with useful details, translate the app, send PRs, test the betas, and help each other in the issues. I didn't expect that when I started, and it makes the whole thing way more fun to work on. ^

Links

Thanks for reading!

If you try it and something breaks, open an issue with the version and logs it helps a lot. Have a great day!

I built MyCam, an MIT-licensed app that turns your phone into a Windows webcam without ADB or developer options

Hi all, I'm the developer. MyCam is a free, open-source (MIT) way to use your phone as a webcam on Windows 10/11. On the PC it shows up as a normal camera called "MyCam", so it works in Teams, OBS, browsers and the Camera app.

I made it because most phone-webcam apps are closed source, push a subscription, or need USB debugging turned on. With MyCam:

  • Android: plug in over USB (it uses Android Open Accessory, not ADB) or pair over Wi-Fi with a QR code / 6-digit code
  • iPhone: nothing to install. The PC serves a small HTTPS page, you scan a QR code and open it in Safari
  • Up to 4K and up to 120 fps, but only what your phone actually supports
  • No ads, no account, no cloud. Video only goes from your phone to your PC
  • A PC has to be explicitly allowed on the phone before it gets video, and the camera turns off when Windows locks

On Windows 11 it uses the Frame Server virtual camera API; on Windows 10 it falls back to a DirectShow filter, the same approach as OBS Virtual Camera. The architecture and wire protocol are documented in docs/ARCHITECTURE.md.

Known rough edges: the installer isn't code-signed yet (you'll see "unknown publisher"),

Repo: https://github.com/whoissaaif/mycam

Bug reports and PRs are welcome, and I'd especially like testing on different phones.

Talvio: open source (MIT) voice dictation + assistant for Windows/macOS/Linux that runs speech locally

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Edit: I undersold the part I'm proudest of. With the Android app you can watch your PC's screen live from your phone, from any network, dictate or type into a window you pick, ask your PC's assistant, and run voice commands on it. The PC has to approve each phone first, the live video is end-to-end encrypted over WebRTC, and speech and the assistant can run fully locally with no API key. (Live view needs a Windows PC for now.)

I got tired of typing everything, so I built this. Hold a key, talk, and the text lands wherever your cursor is. Hold another key and ask a question instead, and it answers out loud.

Speech recognition runs on your own machine (transcribe.cpp, Parakeet/Whisper/Nemotron models), so nothing leaves your computer unless you choose a cloud provider. No account needed for the local stuff.

Other bits:

- optional AI cleanup of what you dictated, with a local llama.cpp model if you want it fully offline

- "do this on my computer" commands (open apps, play music, draft an email)

- an Android/iOS app that turns your phone into a wireless mic for the PC

- self-hostable account server if you want the phone part without trusting mine

It started as a fork of Handy by CJ Pais and grew from there. MIT licensed, Rust + Tauri.

https://github.com/ishangautam7/Talvio

Happy to hear what breaks, especially on Linux.

The developer of FairScan shared that Ente most likely has used his open source code without any attribution to his work. Ente is apparently ignoring his questions he sent them in relation to the issue too.

Thoughts from anyone who has experiences with such a situation?

TableHistory: a FOSS app to manage items of historical events, documents and persons, and to show them in a Gantt diagram.

Thumbnail
github.com
7 Upvotes

TableHistory is my new FOSS app to manage items of historical events, documents and persons, and to show them in a diagram. It's useful especially for historical studies. Data can be easily retrieved and imported in the app from LLMs like Google Gemini and Claude with a copy and paste procedure. Data are stored in a .csv file, so no database is used. This makes it very easy to select and share part of the archives and greatly simplify fetching data from AI LLMs.

The app has been written in C++ and Qt libraries with the support of Google Gemini. It runs on Windows and macOS, and the interface is currently only in English. The spell-checker works with English, Italian, Spanish, German, French, and Portuguese languages.

FableCut: An MIT-licensed open-source video editor with browser-based AI agent support

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been developing FableCut, an open-source video editor built around the idea that AI agents should be able to operate editing software directly, rather than only generating separate video files.

The project has a browser-based editor called FableCut Studio and a local version distributed through npm. Both are designed to support editing workflows, with MCP providing a way for compatible AI agents to interact with the project.

What it includes:

  • Timeline editing: Three-point editing, ripple, roll, slip, slide, track targeting, markers, and keyboard shortcuts.
  • Audio: EQ, compression, limiting, reverb, noise reduction, loudness normalization, and automatic ducking.
  • Color grading: Scopes, color wheels, curves, and HSL controls.
  • Motion and compositing: Masks, motion tracking, shape layers, parenting, motion paths, and motion blur.
  • Speech editing: Browser-based transcription, transcript-driven cuts, word-timed captions, and silence removal.
  • Project workflows: Multiple sequences, version history, proxies, offline media relinking, and batch export.

Studio exposes 16 tools through a remote MCP server, allowing compatible agents to modify a timeline in the browser. The relay carries tool calls and results, including project text and requested frames, but not the video media files themselves.

The latest release adds transcription and text-based editing powered by Whisper running in the browser. The first transcription downloads a model of around 77 MB.

FableCut is released under the MIT license, and Studio is free to try. The local npm version is available with:

npx -y fablecut

I'm continuing to improve the project and welcome bug reports, feature requests, contributions, and technical feedback.

ariaWatch - A TUI Donwload Manager based on aria2

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

https://github.com/AnkitKumarDhal/ariaWatch/releases/tag/v0.3.0

Hello everyone!

I've been working on this TUI download manager based on aria2, because well i tried finding the lightest and fastest download manager, but i couldn't find anything better than aria2 in the terminal. I tried a few TUI options for it but i couldn't find any modern TUI (anything that didn't look it was from the mid 2010s) so i tried to make one myself.

It started out as a simple monitor for an already running aria2 server, but with this v0.3 release, it turns into a full-fledged download manager, with support for:

adding download URLs directly, even magnet links are supported

adding .torrent files

keeping history of downloads

download actions (pause, resume, remove, delete)

information about the download

able to monitor a pre-existing aria2 server

I'd love for people to try it out and give feedback on what issues they face, and what things can be improved. Do give it a try! The binary release is for Linux x86_64 only for now,,, with other OS's support planned for future releases.

About the other TUI's looking from mid-2010s claim,,, mine doesn't look any better either, but its still in the very early stages, and v0.5 is going to be a major UI overhaul with a UI that i have planned beforehand hehe :3

Thank you!

I just released CutOut 2.1.0! My free offline background remover now supports GPU acceleration

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

I posted about CutOut recently, and the response was honestly amazing. Version 2.0.0 just reached 100 downloads, and the GitHub repository passed 20 stars. I wasn't expecting that much attention, so thank you to everyone who checked it out!

To celebrate, I decided to release CutOut 2.1.0 earlier than planned.

For anyone unfamiliar, CutOut is a completely free, open-source, offline AI background remover. No subscriptions, accounts, uploads, or resolution limits.

What's new in 2.1.0:

  • GPU acceleration: Added DirectML support for Windows and CoreML for macOS.
  • Automatic GPU selection: CutOut can detect supported dedicated GPUs on Windows and use the CPU for integrated graphics.
  • GPU controls: You can manually switch between Auto, On, and Off.
  • CPU fallback: If GPU processing fails, CutOut attempts to fall back to the CPU.
  • Update checker: You can now check for newer versions directly in Settings.

A few things worth mentioning: Linux is still CPU-only, macOS GPU acceleration hasn't been tested on actual hardware yet, and dedicated GPU performance still needs testing.

I tested GPU acceleration on my Ryzen 3 3200G's integrated graphics, and it was actually slower than the CPU, which is why I added automatic GPU selection.

I'm still working on improving CutOut, and video/GIF background removal is something I'm planning for a future release.

Download: https://getcutout.pages.dev/

Source code: https://github.com/gserect-gif/cutout-app

If you try it out, I'd love to hear how it performs on your hardware, especially if you have a dedicated GPU.

Thanks again for all the support!

Workhorse: a durable task queue inside PostgreSQL

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

What it is

Workhorse runs background tasks for your application and keeps every task in PostgreSQL. If your application already uses PostgreSQL, you add Workhorse and you need nothing else to run background jobs. Workers in 8+ languages all use one SQL protocol, and they share one dashboard. The code is open source under the Apache License 2.0.

What it does

  1. The dashboard lives inside your application. You mount it at a path such as /workhorse, in any of the eight languages. It uses your application's own login, so you do not run a second admin system. It shows tasks, attempts, checkpoints, schedules, queues, workers, failures, and health for every machine.
  2. A stopped worker does not lose work. A Workhorse worker holds a lease on each task. If the lease expires, another worker takes the task. A fence token stops the old worker from overwriting newer work if it comes back.
  3. Concurrency and rate limits. The limits live in the database, so they apply to all workers together. You can also set them for each key, not only for a whole queue. This is very useful for the rate limit of an external API.
  4. Long tasks do not start over. A handler can save checkpoints. If the task runs again, it skips the parts that already finished. It can also wait for a timer or a signal without holding a worker slot.
  5. Durable waits without a second service. Timers, signals, and child tasks need only PostgreSQL. There is no workflow server to run, and you can start the work inside your own database transaction.
  6. Many languages, one queue. A Go service can enqueue a task and a Python worker can run it, on the same queue.

How I build it

I use AI coding tools to build Workhorse, and want to say it openly. Each change goes through review and CI. Each language SDK runs its tests (more than 500+ test files by far) against a real PostgreSQL database. Each design decision is recorded, and there is more than 100 of them. You can read why Workhorse works the way it does, not only what it does.

When it is not the right tool

I want to be honest about this too:

  • If your application does not use PostgreSQL, Workhorse is not for you.
  • Workhorse shares your PostgreSQL database. If you want your queue to scale on its own, a separate broker can suit you better.
  • Like most task queues, Workhorse delivers each task at least once. It is a good idea to give your external calls idempotency keys.

Workhorse is in public beta. You can use it for evaluation and early production.

Fun fact, if you look closely, our horse logo is not pixel perfect. Those are scars, every good workhorse should have a few.
