Hint / Information Just a reminder if you have IBS C or chronic constipation

A lot of people who are diagnosed with IBS C or chronic constipation, especially if they aren’t responsive to diet and lifestyle changes, often end up having one or more significant motility disorders.

Many different things can cause these.

When you have chronic constipation, there is an order of operations you/your doc should follow.

  • first try dietary and lifestyle changes (ALL of them); if that doesn't work...
  • then try over-the-counter medications and supplements. If those don't work...
  • then you need motility testing done. Depending on your results of them...
  • then you go to prescription medication. Try them in different combinations and try all of them. If those fail, as well...
  • depending on your diagnosis after your motility testing, you may be eligible for non-invasive and invasive treatments to treat it. If those don't work…
  • again, depending on your diagnosis, then surgery is an option

If you are seeing a gastroenterologist and this isn’t laid out for you, chances their specialty isn’t motility. Unfortunately, many people get sent to GIs who have a speciality in something other than what they need. For motility, you need to see a motility specialist or a neurogastroenterologist.

There is a PSA I wrote and it is stickied above. I’ve been living with this since I was born (over 40 years). I also have worked in this area, as well. I try to spread awareness and this is often falling off of the radar and patients are just told to eat fibre.

With motility disorders, fibre is often the menace.

Testing for motility includes, but is not limited to:

  • esophageal manometry
  • antroduodenal manometry
  • gastric emptying study
  • 72 hour emptying study
  • upper gi series barium swallow
  • there was a wireless motility capsule but it’s been discontinued. There are a couple new ones in trials. Don’t hold your breath.
  • sitz marker test (also called a shape study)
  • colonic manometry (very key test but hard to get)
  • anorectal manometry
  • defecogram (mri or xray)

If you have any questions on testing, treatment, where to go, and so on, let me know.

Edit: because this post is now archived, please feel to send me a chat about any of the into here.

🎉 Success Story 🎉 Accidentally “Cured” my IBS-C

I’ve been obsessed with Trader Joe’s European style yogurt, but ever since I moved to an area where the closest TJ’s is 2 hours away, I’ve been looking for a decent substitute. Someone on another subreddit recommended Stonyfield Organic Probiotic Whole Yogurt so I gave it a go. Turns out it’s similar in texture to the TJ’s Euro yogurt, though less sour, but I was mostly happy with the substitute. I had about a 1/2 cup with/after dinner for three days, and y’all… I’ve never pooped three days in a row before in my LIFE. Correlation doesn’t prove causation I know, but the one day I didn’t use the bathroom was the only in the week that I had skipped having yogurt the night before. I mean??? Something is adding up, right?

Anyway, I was just so excited to not be bloated and full of dookie for once. Crossing my fingers this lasts a while, but I figured I’d share in case this helps any of my fellow IBS-C havers.

Question Did I just ruin my colonoscopy prep?!

what the title says, I’m new to this area of my life unfortunately, I’ve been suffering with IBS and Gerd for the better part of a year and a half - We’ll it’s finally time for me to get this all checked out and I have my colonoscopy on Wednesday morning at 11 AM. Now here comes the question if anyone can answer it as the office is closed so I’m going to call first thing in the morning. I have two very small children and I’m beyond stressed. Given the circumstances of having young kids, I just now finally got a chance to look at my prep paper this morning and in big bold letters it says no ibuprofen for a week before the procedure. And no corn among many other things listed. The Gasp I GUSPED while reading those lines. Mind you, I was eating small bites of my son’s corn as I was reading it. The last time I took ibuprofen was last night around 7 PM 600 mg to be exact. I’ve also taken it a couple of times this past week due to period cramps. Unbeknownst to my silly self, that is on the top of the list of medication’s not to take for a week before due to bleeding risk. So Has anyone here made this mess up before? Does this automatically mean that my procedure will be canceled Wednesday morning? Am I possibly in the clear? help ya girl out! ty!!

Rant does anyone else feel hopeless?

Hello! I’m 20F and I’ve been struggling with IBS-D since I was around 13. Started off as anxiety then progressed into it. Over the last year for no apparent reason it’s developed into something worse. Bathroom trips 6+ times a day etc.

Now that it’s getting worse I’m starting to feel extremely depressed and hopeless, I’m terrified to eat food because no matter what I eat it genuinely goes straight through me very painfully. Even thinking about eating gives me anxiety. Not only that I’ve had to quit my job and I can barely leave the house due to being ill on the toilet.

I don’t see many posts with people my age and wanted to see if anyone else felt the same. It gets to a point where I don’t know how to live with this condition. Does anyone else feel extremely depressed?

Meme / Humor the cure to my ibs-c is anxiety attacks

usually i’m as backed up as the files of a paranoid programmer, but i’ve found the miracle cure for my chronic constipation — anxiety attacks! for my job as a researcher, i have to interview strangers a lot, which is unfortunate because i have severe social anxiety. however, the mounting panic i feel in the hours before every interview spurs my guts to finally move! if, like me, no laxative in the world has been strong enough to free your tum, maybe try putting yourself in a prolonged terrifying situation about once a week.

Question Scopolamine helped my ibs?

I’ve had IBS for most of my life. Mostly IBS-D that would lead to noxious gas that would sometimes last all night. Long story short, I did chemo for 5 months this year (unrelated to my bad stomach) and oh my goodness, my stomach was so so bad. I tried everything to help it. 3 weeks ago I had a 9 hour surgery. Since then, my stomach has been better than it’s been in probably 12 years. Pooping twice a day, very little gas, etc. The only thing I can think of that could have changed my stomach in this way is the scopolamine patch they gave me. I did have a few bad side effects from it like blurry vision, a transient fever, blown pupil, urine retention, and hallucinations, but I would go through all that again if it’s what has helped my stomach. Not sure if scopolamine could impact the gut in that way, but any similar experiences?

Rant Gas incontinence is ruining my life

The problem started last year, when I got a night-shift job. During that period, I started having a lot of gas. At the same time, the gas incontinence began. I have gas every day, constantly. I feel as though I have gas about to come out 24 hours a day, every day. I also feel as though something isn't right back there. I think feels slightly chafed, but without any pain. After a few months, I left the job and started looking for solutions. I went to doctors and hospitals, and I went to the gastroenterologist several times. I tried different medications, including Omeprazole and Aturen, and a cream, but nothing worked. I also paid quite a lot of money for a set of medical tests, which included blood and urine tests. When I went back to the gastroenterologist with the results, he barely looked at them for about 30 seconds and told me everything was fine. And he sent me to get more tests and referred me to a proctologist. I decided to go to the proctologist, and he told me I had a small hemorrhoid and recommended a cream, which didn't work either. After spending quite a lot of money on appointments, tests, and prescriptions without getting any results, I stopped going to gastroenterologists and proctologists.

My case seems to be a little different from others I've read about. I've read accounts from people who don't realize when they pass gas, but in my case, I can feel when one is about to come out. The problem is that I can't hold it in. I don't feel pain, nor do I feel discomfort when sitting. The only thing I managed to improve was the problem with blood on the toilet paper. I started being much more careful when wiping myself and taking sitz baths from time to time, and it's been almost a year since I last saw blood on the toilet paper. However, the gas incontinence continues...

I tried Kegel exercises and eating healthily, but nothing has really worked. I still have a lot of gas every day. Since I developed this problem, I haven't worked again, and I spend almost all my time cooped up at home, alone and without socializing.

It's something very embarrassing and limiting. I want to work, go out, socialize, and live like any other person, but this problem prevents me from doing everything, to the point that I even stopped taking buses. I've also noticed that the symptoms get much worse when I'm in public. I'm depressed and tired. I no longer know what else to try. I'm tired of living like this, this isn't a life.

Question Frequent noisy stomach growls - anyone else?

I was wondering if someone has the exact same issue that I have.

I typically have the full works of IBS-D problems (loose stools, stomach cramps, mucus in stools, etc).

But there is one issue in particular that I find very humiliating. I have the most noisy gut, and it always seems to spring up in the worst situations! For example being sat in a quiet room, work meetings, cinema, etc. It always attracts so much attention towards me, and I often can't stop it.

The most common noise tends to be lower down in my gut (towards my rear end), and is likely caused by gas bubbles. I'm not always able to pass gas when this happens, so it might be trapped gas. Basically imagine the sound of passing gas, but it's trapped inside so you just get this loud internal rumbling sound. I also get noises higher up in my gut, but these aren't quite so frequent.

Sometimes the lower gut noises are accompanied by mild to moderate stomach cramps. Occasionally I feel like my gut is under attack or is severely irritated. Other times I just get the noises and not much else.

Stress always makes this issue worse. I'm autistic and possibly undiagnosed ADHD. I also have a lot of anxiety issues, and have a fast metabolism (I'm always getting hungry and getting a rumbly stomach, but that is a separate issue).

Doctor suggested following the low FODMAP diet, which I try to stick to. This reduces the frequency of the issues, but they still are far too frequent to not have a big impact on my life.

I often fear for my future, so many times I have had to leave situations because of this embarrassing issue.

Question Starting Linzess- need advice

I recently posted a question about this, and everyone was so helpful, so I wanted to get a little more advice. I am about to start Linzess, and I was wondering what time of day y'all take it. Morning or night, and around what time? I work and go to school, so I'm a little worried about the D+ I might get during the first 2 weeks, and I’d love some advice. Thanks, y'all!

Question Don’t know what to do?

I usually take mago7 for overnight constipation management but I started feeling like it was to aggressive so I started miralax last night. I had a good morning bm but I feel more bloated and constipated than before. Should I give miralax a go for a few more days or go back to mago7? Kinda scared things will worsen if MiraLAX doesn’t work out. Advice please!🙏

Question IBS worst on days off?

Does your IBS get worst on days of rest?

My IBS has vastly improved in the past years. No, I cannot eat what I want, I need to careful schedule and plan my meals, but I can function on a daily basis and be well on most days.

Now, what I have noticed in the past weeks/months, is that my work days go alright, my days off go alright if I have activities planned, but when I get to a full day off, a battery reset day where I just stay at home, relax and chill, everything that was.... staying in storage... letting me function... Suddenly wants to get out in multiple trips with cramps, pain, nausea, urgency, all the lovely symptoms.

It's like if stress is keeping things at bay but relaxation opens the gates of hell.

Hint / Information The last two years have been the learning curve from Hell

I don't know if this is helpful, but I was at my absolute wits end last week and for anyone who feels the same -

IBS-C. It started out as ill for a week or two and then fine. Then it became flare ups that seemed to last months and my triggers got worse, not better.

After two years of trying a million different things, I have personally found that hypnotherapy to calm me and a low FODMAP diet during a flare up is the best solution... so far! It's not the most sustainable solution, being that hypnotherapy has a cost and consistent low FODMAP diet is very restrictive, not exactly nourishing and is so incredibly boring!! But it's the best I have to this point and symptoms do eventually subside.

I do hypnotherapy every morning using an app on my phone. At some point I think I'll feel confident to use the techniques without prompts. I'm also currently in week one (again) of a heavily restrictive diet, whilst I await the pain and bloating to subside. Literally, my week is plain chicken, boiled white rice, boiled carrots, eggs, cod, potatoes, herbal tea (no caffeine!), lightly salted rice cakes, lactose free yoghurt, lactose free milk, gluten free porridge, bananas and the occasional cheeky portion of spinach or green beans. It's bleh, but it does seem to work for me 🤷🏼‍♀️

Prior to the diet, my bloating and pain was consistently a 6. Now, 3 days later, it's around a 2. Also contending with a sliding hiatal hernia, so have had to cut out food that is acidic (that's most fruit, even low FODMAP ones). The joys!

I don't have any support at this point. I am seeing a specialist early next month and hoping that will help with what to do going forward.

Rant Feeling defeated and could really use some compassion

doctors slapped an IBS-D label on me without looking into anything. I had a negative celiac test last year, but beyond that nothing. Every time I bring this up with a new doctor the answer is just IBS. It pisses me off so much when they bring up anxiety. like yeah I’ve been anxious my whole life but this has gotten out of control the last 3 years only!

I found out about the low FODMAP diet myself this summer and started with all the good intentions. It’s been exhausting. Coming up with meals that are safe” and appealing takes so much energy

Eventually I thought I was feeling better, and started reintroductions and everything became so confusing. The same amount of something seems to hurt me one day and be completely fine another. I honestly don’t know what I can and can’t eat anymore.

Around the same time I started reintroductions, I also stopped taking PPIs, which seemed to firm up my stools (very welcome side effect). Now I’m wondering whether feeling better during those three months was actually because of the medication rather than the diet.

This past weekend I was celebrating an important milestone and went out to restaurants. I tried so hard to choose safe, plain things, but garlic and onion are everywhere.
Yesterday I went from completely fine no symptoms, to needing a bathroom within about a minute. That really broke me a little. It’s so demoralizing to put this much effort into managing something and still feel like I have no idea what’s happening.

I have an appointment with my pcp tomorrow, I want a concrete plan for what needs to be ruled out in my case before we keep calling this IBS.
I’m mostly venting. I wanted to enjoy a celebration, and I’m tired

Question IBS Flare

Hey all!

So I was diagnosed with IBS in my 20’s (now 43) and I have been in remission for about 5 years (I didn’t do anything different, it just eventually went away and I didn’t have any issues) …..until 7 days ago. The stomach pain and bloating came back with a vengeance.

I wasn’t aware of a low fodmap diet last time but I started following it a few days ago and it seems to be helping. I’m on day 2 of no pain thanks to watching what I eat. So I guess my question is….when do you know your flare is over and when can you start trying to eat normally again? My previous flares only lasted about a day and then it was gone so I never limited my diet. Any info appreciated!

Question Butter - is it a trigger for you?

I always thought that would have been a safe low fodmap food? But then again, it is very high in fat.

What I had in the last several hours: boiled eggs on seeded sourdough toast (with too much butter), peppermint tea with a small bit of green tea (loose leaf). I did have a little bit of dark chocolate so maybe it was that...

What from what I mentioned is an obvious trigger for you? Think I'll have to take it easy with how fast I reintroduce stuff so I can pinpoint it.

Question Sitzs results

I thought ya'll would be interested in my sitz rings results.

FINDINGS: Day one image demonstrates Sitzmarks markers within the stomach.

Day 3 images demonstrate the majority of the markers within the right colon. 4 markers are seen within the transverse colon and only one marker is seen within the left colon.

Day 5 images demonstrate more than 5 markers within the right colon with only 2 markers seen within the rectosigmoid colon suggestive of delayed transit.

I did not go for 7 days until I could take my meds again.

Rant Best poo's on my life while on holidays eating like **** daily... Why ?

My normal lifestyle consists of daily exercise (cardio and weights) and eating extremely healthy. Perfect macros according to various apps, mostly whole foods and meats, nothing processed.

Majority of the time my fecal matter is a mushy consistenct, like you'd imagine a soft serve ice cream coming out of the machine if it's a little melted. Not extremely runny, not not like your typical poo.

While I've been on holidays for 2 weeks, lack of exercise besides walking, and eating like complete shit, burgers, pizza, fries, burritos, ice cream, the list goes on... Diet likely extremely high in saturated fat, sodium, etc....

And I did the best poo's of my life. They were big, not too hard not too soft, easy to get out etc. it felt like this is what it should normally be.

Why is it that then as soon as I come back home, it goes straight back to how it was ?

Bathroom Buddies Help!

Want to know how are you all navigating through life with loud bowel sounds . By loud bowel sounds I don’t mean stomach rumbling while hungry, these bowel sounds come from rectal and colonic area , some sort of internal farts I would say , like gas comes down towards anal opening and goes back up with a loud sound . This issue is killing me , it’s so embarrassing, affecting my life so bad , distanced myself from friends and family .afraid to get into a relationship. Can’t work in peace . Life doesn’t seem worth living with this issue. Nobody really understands it. Been to numerous doctors, they don’t know what this issue is at all .
Please let me know if something has helped you or how you have accepted this and navigating through your life pleaseee 🥲🥲.

Question Did anyone actually manage to keep an IBS food diary? How?

My sister has IBS. Her doctor told her to track everything she eats. She tried a notebook. It lasted only couple of days.

Logging every meal took too long. When she feels bad, the last thing she wants is to open a diary. And on good days, she’s busy with work and life and simply forgets.

Last time we talked she told me she feels guilty every time she forgets. I want to help her find a way that sticks. She’s struggling with IBS a lot right now and lost a lot of weight, so I just want to support her however I can. So I’m curious how others do it:

  • Have you kept a food diary? What made you stop?
  • Did you use an app, a notebook, or something else? What worked?
  • How did you figure out which foods are okay for you, and how much of them you can handle?

I’ve been thinking about building something simpler for her. But maybe a good solution already exists. What worked for you?

Rant IBS-D is ruining my relationship

Me(22F) And my Husband(25M) are in a constant argument over my bathroom usage, for the last 3 years i have been dealing with severe dumping syndrome from gallbladder removal. No matter the change in my diet, i am constantly dealing with bloating, gas pains, diarrhea and intense cramping. I have had ibs since i was 16, but with the change in my digestive system it has only gotten worse. Everytime i need to go, it’s URGENT.

My husband genuinely believes i am lying and that i’m using it as excuse to get away from uncomfortable conversations or spending time with him. Yes, i have had to go in the middle of an argument but i cannot stop it..
i haven’t seen my GI doctor or PCP in over a year, since i had my son. I have a lapse in insurance and it’s just not something we can afford without. Until January, is there anything i can do.?? i need relief and my relationship back..

He has not always thought that way about my IBS, he was always understanding and empathetic.. But recently it seems like i’m always in the restroom and it truly triggers him.

Question IBC-C Guidance/What to advocate for @ Dr?

Situation:
I went on an international/long haul trip a little over a week ago. Prior to that, my Metformin dose had made me “regular” (for better or worse, iykyk). Like with every time I fly and travel, I’m eating regularly and cannot go the entire time (5-day trip). Two days back home, I’ve been taking motility laxatives, Smooth Move tea, mineral oil, and still no dice. No urge at all and it’s getting a bit odd (and uncomfortable). Eventually, after reading some advice on here I try dulcolax suppositories. I finally go after 7 days, but I can tell it’s not enough. I still feel quite full. I have maybe one more BM that entire week I’m back home. My stomach still isn’t back to normal and truthfully it feels like my digestive system has just entirely ground to a halt for two weeks. I’m trying another suppository today because I feel so bloated and uncomfortable, like my entire torso is uncomfortably full.

Question(s):
1. I’ve suffered with constipation my entire life, but this honestly might be the worst episode I’ve had. I never go to the doctor for it because I’m a woman and without fail, a medical professional tells me to drink more water, or tries to prescribe some combination of birth control and a laxative. However, this feels like a particularly long and bad episode that is not showing any signs of improving. I feel incredibly uncomfortable, and while there is no pain, I am starting to get worried. Has anyone ever experienced a long flare of IBS-C like this?

  1. Before I took this trip, my Metformin dose was basically giving me very predictable and temporary diarrhea after my morning dose. As a longtime IBS-C person, I honestly found it relieving. Months of this and suddenly I take this trip and it stops. I’m confused and concerned about what that means for the state of my gut rn.

  2. If/when I do go to the doctor, what should I advocate for so I’m not sent home with an OTC laxative and a lecture about water?

TYIA, everyone!

Rant Too well to be ill, too ill to be well.

I've been recently diagnosed with IBS due to no other explanation to my stomach issues that have been ongoing for over 4 years now. Chronic pain unrelated to diet (tried food diaries, removing foods etc, no help), I've tried everything and i have been on pain relief for over 3 years now. I also suffer from non-diabetic hypoglycaemia, which means i can literally have hypoglycaemic attacks from nowhere after eating. My work have been very understanding, allowing me to work from home (due to meds and hypos) but have all of a sudden said you have to come in. You are well enough to work or not and should leave.

Now at this point after nearly 4 years of pain am mentally spent (along with other family shit going on). Has anyone ever felt so useless that they are neither well enough to work consistently but not deemed "ill" enough to get any kid of support? I have a family of 7, my wife and 5 kids. We've managed to muddle through, but this last turn has literally got me at the end of my mental capacity.
