meta/community Poll on Banning Post Types

There have been several popular posts recently suggesting that more posts should be removed. The mod team's response has generally been "Those posts aren't against the rules - what rule are you suggesting we add?"

Still, we understand the frustration. This has always been a "catch all" sub for IT related posts, but that doesn't necessarily mean we shouldn't have stricter standards. Let us know in the poll or comments what you would like to see.

59 votes, Jan 11 '25
11 Change nothing, the current rules are good.
3 Just ban all meme/joke posts.
10 Just ban tech support posts (some or all).
2 Just ban "advice" requests (some or all).
22 Just ban/discourage low effort posts, in general.
11 Ban a combination of these things, or something else.

Some steps for getting into IT

We see a lot of questions within the r/IT community asking how to get into IT, what path to follow, what is needed, etc. For everyone it is going to be different but there is a similar path that we can all take to make it a bit easier.

If you have limited/no experience in IT (or don't have a degree) it is best to start with certifications. CompTIA is, in my opinion, the best place to start. Following in this order: A+, Network+, and Security+. These are a great place to start and will lay a foundation for your IT career.

There are resources to help you earn these certificates but they don't always come cheap. You can take CompTIA's online learning (live online classroom environment) but at $2,000 USD, this will be cost prohibitive for a lot of people. CBT Nuggets is a great website but it is not free either (I do not have the exact price). You can also simply buy the books off of Amazon. Fair warning with that: they make for VERY dry reading and the certification exams are not easy (for me they weren't, at least).

After those certifications, you will then have the opportunity to branch out. At that time, you should have the knowledge of where you would like to go and what IT career path you would like to pursue.

I like to stress that a college/university degree is NOT necessary to get into the IT field but will definitely help. What degree you choose is strictly up to you but I know quite a few people with a computer science degree.

Most of us (degree or not) will start in a help desk environment. Do not feel bad about this; it's a great place to learn and the job is vital to the IT department. A lot of times it is possible to get into a help desk role with no experience but these roles will limit what you are allowed to work on (call escalation is generally what you will do).

Please do not hesitate to ask questions, that is what we are all here for.

I would encourage my fellow IT workers to add to this post, fill in the blanks that I most definitely missed.

opinion How to Fix PyTorch CUDA Out of Memory on RTX 3060 Fast

If you train or run deep learning models locally using an RTX 3060, hitting the dreaded PyTorch CUDA out of memory error is a regular headache. Even with the 12GB VRAM version, large batch sizes, unoptimized activation graphs, and memory fragmentation can crash your training scripts instantly.

Most guides offer generic advice that ignores the specific limits of mid-range consumer cards. I put together a focused troubleshooting guide specifically for the RTX 3060 to help you maximize your VRAM. It covers tuning your batch sizes, leveraging automatic mixed precision, adjusting environment variables for memory allocation, and using gradient accumulation effectively.

If you want to stop running into sudden VRAM crashes and keep your local machine training smoothly, check out the full breakdown here: https://interconnectd.com/blog/320/how-to-fix-pytorch-cuda-out-of-memory-on-rtx-3060-fast/

What strategies have you found most effective for managing tight VRAM budgets on your hardware?

help request Recs Needed: Mouse and Keyboard Combo that can switch between devices.

I have been on the lookout for a keyboard and a mouse that I can switch between my work computer (Windows) and my personal one (MacBook), as juggling two mice and constantly connecting/disconnecting my keyboard is getting a bit annoying. I currently have two Logitech Pebbles and the Pebble keys, but I wanted a mechanical keyboard. I was very enticed to get the MX Master 3S mouse and the MX Mechanical keyboard, but I want to be able to switch the keys to a burgundy set.

It would be cool if the frame and mouse were black, and if it were a pretty standard keyboard size, no need for a number pad on the right, but also indifferent to it.

So TLDR: Need a mechanical keyboard and a comfortable mouse that will support switching between two different laptops using Bluetooth.

help request Fixed a DNS delegation issue in my AD lab, but I still have a replication warning

I've been messing around with my AD lab today and finally got one issue sorted out. I have two Windows Server domain controllers, but DC01 is currently powered off, so I'm working with DC02 for now. While running dcdiag, I found that the _msdcs delegation was still pointing to DC01. I checked the records and changed it to point to DC02 instead. Ran dcdiag again, and the DNS tests are now passing. I also jumped onto my Windows 11 client to see if it could reach DC02. DNS resolution works, ping is fine, and TCP tests to ports 53, 88, and 389 all succeeded.

So far, so good.

The part I'm still trying to understand is that repadmin /showrpl reports replication failures involving DC01, and DC02 is still logging Event ID 2092 about FSMO role validation. All five FSMO roles are assigned to DC02, but apparently that doesn't mean everything is healthy. I'm not planning to force anything or clean up DC01 until I decide whether I'm bringing it back or retiring it properly. For those who've dealt with this before, would you focus on the Event 2092 warning first, or sort out the DC01 situation before going further?

I'm still learning the deeper side of AD, so I'd appreciate hearing how you'd approach it.

help request This or that: Dual-boot or completely replace the default OS (Windows 11) with Linux?

Choice A: Dual-booting Windows 11 (default) alongside my preferred Linux distro

Choice B: Completely replacing Windows 11 with my preferred Linux distro

Context: I am struggling with my current laptop setup because I am experiencing severe memory bottlenecks.

Current hardware specs (I own a budget-tier laptop):

  • (C:) OS drive 12.7 GB free of 116GB
  • (D:) Backup drive 200 GB free of 931 GB (1TB)
  • 8 GB memory
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3500U
  • AMD Radeon Vega 8 (Picasso)

According to my research, Linux Mint is highly recommended as a lightweight Linux distribution for intensive web and database development.

My intention in asking here is to learn from someone with more experience regarding the trade-offs. So... enlighten me, guys!

jobs and hiring Interview with director dress attire HELP

I have a 2nd round interview for a IT position at a bank headquarters with the director of IT. This is the first time I’ve ever got to have a second round interview and more specifically a in person interview. I’ve been researching online what’s the best dress code. This is a more entry level position in IT but it is also a salary position. The first round interview it seems like most of the people were working from home and so I wasn’t able to get an accurate understanding of what I can expect to dress like. I also never confirmed with the HR recruiter on what the dress attire was (a fault on my laziness)a At my previous role at a Fortune 20 company, I never wore a tie and I did tuck my shirt or polo in and I wore chinos and some comfy dress shoes. I do have a black suit that I can wear with a white shirt which I’ve been thinking of wearing since this is a financial institution and more specifically at a headquarters building and the meeting is with a director. Still having second thoughts though that I might be overdressing, what should I finalize????

help request USB HID hider device help

Anyone know of a device that I could plug a USB HID device into and then plug into my computer that would hide the fact that it is an HID to my computer. This would essentially just be an intermediary device that is read by the computer as a normal keyboard or mouse. Any ideas? Thanks!

news Musk says X will let you send $1 by long-pressing Like via X Money, here's what's actually confirmed

Saw a video framing this as trouble for WhatsApp/GPay and $1 per like. Went and checked.

What he said, per Free Press Journal (IANS feed): We're adding long press on like to send someone $1 via X Money. Posted Sunday Oct 25, 2026. Mechanics reported: long-press Like to send the post's author $1. The liker pays, the author receives.

Status: announcement/proposal only. Lapaas Voice says it's announced, not confirmed as available, no rollout date, and open questions on confirmation screens, other amounts, eligibility, countries and fees.

X Money per TechX: closed beta early 2026, first external invites March, subset of US Premium+ on June 25, all US Premium and Premium+ subscribers on July 27, 2026. P2P by handle plus a Visa debit card. Cross River Bank as banking partner, money transmitter licenses in 40+ US states. Needs a paid subscription and US only.

India: no launch date announced for X Money or the Like feature (Free Press Journal).

WhatsApp/GPay angle: that's the video's framing. I didn't find any report saying X Money competes with UPI apps in India, and it isn't available there.

Worth noting from TechX only (single source, so take it lightly): Cross River has had an FDIC enforcement order since 2023, and lawmakers wrote to Musk in April asking how a 6% yield on balances would be funded, without detailed public answers.

Would you actually use a $1 tip on a Like, or does it feel like it'd make likes awkward?

help request Looking for Online Skills Building Resources

I just came out of a very long couple of years at work and while professionally I am very much at the top of my game in my field I've come to see and learn a lot of gaps that I've just never had the need to dig in to. Plus I want to round out my professional credential stack as well.

I don't learn very well via lecture. Instead I'm more action driven:

  • Here's a concept
  • Here's a resource that covers that concept either in depth or enough to get a grasp on it and dig deeper
  • Here's a goal to put that concept to practice

I'm not opposed to a paid service either.

As far as skills I'm after for specifics I'm after:

  • MS Certifications (may as well finally take them)
    • Specifically O365, Azure VMs, and Entra
  • AWS
  • ITIL
  • Project Management
  • And of course since every company is doing it: AI

If they also have things around electronics, etc. then I'd also be happy for that piece as a "hobby" track

help request Which job in IT would you go after?

I am currently a project engineer at a pretty decent-sized MSP. Been there a few months. Only thing I’m doing technically is 365 migrations, tool implementation. Upgrading old networking equipment. Standard PS work, doesn’t feel challenging and almost like I’m going backwards technically. Boss is incredible and very flexible. Have a current offer for a senior networking engineer/technical project manager for a local big MSP to me. Can’t really make a decision easily. If I knew the new place was going to be super flexible and lenient like current place it would be a no brainer. From strictly a technical position what would you all did?!

opinion Where to go from here… from support

I graduated this past May with a BS in MIS mostly Big Data concentrated.

I was hired by a small company as an intern while I was still in school to work as a system analyst. 10 months went by and I was still in school. They offered an IT support position (which I had no interest in). They said that was the current need given the company is trying to create an MSP-style business. I had nothing else lined up and just went with it.

I applied to a computational analytics program in Georgia Institute of Technology. I got in and I’m going to start my first class. In my support role I been interacting a bunch with Entra, intune, AD, Defender XDR and sentinel and some exposure to Unify console for WiFi. However I don’t want to stay in support forever… I been looking into moving to a cybersecurity role and looking at potentially studying for CCNA or Sec+. I’m not happy we’re in right now given I feel I have potential for other roles. Just need advice on potential opportunities for a different role.

jobs and hiring Let's get to the good part.

As the title says, let's get to the good part. All I see are posts about how awful IT is, the companies that suck, never getting raises, etc. Let's shake it up a bit. Let's hear about good companies that actually hire/promote accordingly, pay well, decent benefits, remote work, whatever makes them stand out as the flower in this ever growing field of weeds. It's time we start making moves to companies that value employees, insight, and drive.
