meta/community Poll on Banning Post Types
There have been several popular posts recently suggesting that more posts should be removed. The mod team's response has generally been "Those posts aren't against the rules - what rule are you suggesting we add?"
Still, we understand the frustration. This has always been a "catch all" sub for IT related posts, but that doesn't necessarily mean we shouldn't have stricter standards. Let us know in the poll or comments what you would like to see.
Some steps for getting into IT
We see a lot of questions within the r/IT community asking how to get into IT, what path to follow, what is needed, etc. For everyone it is going to be different but there is a similar path that we can all take to make it a bit easier.
If you have limited/no experience in IT (or don't have a degree) it is best to start with certifications. CompTIA is, in my opinion, the best place to start. Following in this order: A+, Network+, and Security+. These are a great place to start and will lay a foundation for your IT career.
There are resources to help you earn these certificates but they don't always come cheap. You can take CompTIA's online learning (live online classroom environment) but at $2,000 USD, this will be cost prohibitive for a lot of people. CBT Nuggets is a great website but it is not free either (I do not have the exact price). You can also simply buy the books off of Amazon. Fair warning with that: they make for VERY dry reading and the certification exams are not easy (for me they weren't, at least).
After those certifications, you will then have the opportunity to branch out. At that time, you should have the knowledge of where you would like to go and what IT career path you would like to pursue.
I like to stress that a college/university degree is NOT necessary to get into the IT field but will definitely help. What degree you choose is strictly up to you but I know quite a few people with a computer science degree.
Most of us (degree or not) will start in a help desk environment. Do not feel bad about this; it's a great place to learn and the job is vital to the IT department. A lot of times it is possible to get into a help desk role with no experience but these roles will limit what you are allowed to work on (call escalation is generally what you will do).
Please do not hesitate to ask questions, that is what we are all here for.
I would encourage my fellow IT workers to add to this post, fill in the blanks that I most definitely missed.

jobs and hiring What are some IT and tech related jobs I could do that don't require college
I am 17, turning 18 in two days and in my last year of high school, and everyone I know is saying that if I do not go to college I will never make anything and will be doing poorly. I abhor sitting in a classroom. What are some ways I could get into any kind of tech related job without any college experience? What kind of certifications do I need? I am currently learning Java right now. I really love computers but want to avoid going to college at all costs.
Edit: I've recently earned my Eagle Scout rank, I thought that might be worth mentioning and was curious if that would help my chances with getting hired and make up for the lack of college.

Fuck me man this is just a scam.😤

help request Housemate revealed they have been using a Tor Browser on the home network
Title says it all. She is not the most technologically savvy person. Based on her description of how enjoyable and convenient it has been to purchase drugs through whatever services she has been interacting with I doubt she has taken any steps to protect herself and our shared network beyond whatever protections are put in place by her browser.
She has no intention of stopping using it, and wouldn’t tell us if she was using it in the future.
What steps can I take to better protect our network?
Update: She hasn’t been using a VPN and didn’t even consider doing that because “it costs too much”

jobs and hiring Is the market that bad? Or is this Govtec
galleryI'm a prior service Army commo guy with 7 years experience in the military, and I'm looking at some of these job posts and i'm kinda mind blown. Is this just how the market is? An active Secret clearance and CISSP/Security X with 6 years of exp for 60k? Maybe I'm a little far removed from how the market actually is since I just got out but jeez. I make around 50k for level 1 in a similar area...

help request How to lie for an entry-level position
Before you guys light the pyre, it's rough out here. I am about to graduate and have no experience. I've tried applying for internships, doing at-home projects, applying for underpaying low-hanging fruit, asking companies if they need help, paying $200+ for a terrible resume writer... EVERYTHING. I am more than competent to handle tier 1 Helpdesk work. I feel like Will Smith's character in The Pursuit of Happyness (when he was selling those machines). I simply want a job. I'm willing to do the grunt work, TaskRabbit, everything but selling sex. I feel like I'm networking and constantly getting leads, but no work. I would even take a part-time high school-level job just to get experience. I say all that to ask: How do I effectively lie on my resume for an entry-level role? I don't know if I need to fabricate my entire work history or just embellish the time/role I had at previous positions. I need work. I appreciate any advice except advice that says "Don't lie" - I will block you. I mean it. Don't even comment that. Thank you guys very much!
EDIT: since it was in the comments about a cert, I have my CompTIA Sec+. I am working toward my CCNA next, while refining my full stack abilities. I have experience through coursework with programming css, html, php, MEAN stack, networking, packet tracer, sql, and cloud.

help request Recs Needed: Mouse and Keyboard Combo that can switch between devices.
I have been on the lookout for a keyboard and a mouse that I can switch between my work computer (Windows) and my personal one (MacBook), as juggling two mice and constantly connecting/disconnecting my keyboard is getting a bit annoying. I currently have two Logitech Pebbles and the Pebble keys, but I wanted a mechanical keyboard. I was very enticed to get the MX Master 3S mouse and the MX Mechanical keyboard, but I want to be able to switch the keys to a burgundy set.
It would be cool if the frame and mouse were black, and if it were a pretty standard keyboard size, no need for a number pad on the right, but also indifferent to it.
So TLDR: Need a mechanical keyboard and a comfortable mouse that will support switching between two different laptops using Bluetooth.

help request Fixed a DNS delegation issue in my AD lab, but I still have a replication warning

I've been messing around with my AD lab today and finally got one issue sorted out. I have two Windows Server domain controllers, but DC01 is currently powered off, so I'm working with DC02 for now. While running dcdiag, I found that the _msdcs delegation was still pointing to DC01. I checked the records and changed it to point to DC02 instead. Ran dcdiag again, and the DNS tests are now passing. I also jumped onto my Windows 11 client to see if it could reach DC02. DNS resolution works, ping is fine, and TCP tests to ports 53, 88, and 389 all succeeded.
So far, so good.
The part I'm still trying to understand is that repadmin /showrpl reports replication failures involving DC01, and DC02 is still logging Event ID 2092 about FSMO role validation. All five FSMO roles are assigned to DC02, but apparently that doesn't mean everything is healthy. I'm not planning to force anything or clean up DC01 until I decide whether I'm bringing it back or retiring it properly. For those who've dealt with this before, would you focus on the Event 2092 warning first, or sort out the DC01 situation before going further?
I'm still learning the deeper side of AD, so I'd appreciate hearing how you'd approach it.

opinion How to Fix PyTorch CUDA Out of Memory on RTX 3060 Fast
If you train or run deep learning models locally using an RTX 3060, hitting the dreaded PyTorch CUDA out of memory error is a regular headache. Even with the 12GB VRAM version, large batch sizes, unoptimized activation graphs, and memory fragmentation can crash your training scripts instantly.
Most guides offer generic advice that ignores the specific limits of mid-range consumer cards. I put together a focused troubleshooting guide specifically for the RTX 3060 to help you maximize your VRAM. It covers tuning your batch sizes, leveraging automatic mixed precision, adjusting environment variables for memory allocation, and using gradient accumulation effectively.
If you want to stop running into sudden VRAM crashes and keep your local machine training smoothly, check out the full breakdown here: https://interconnectd.com/blog/320/how-to-fix-pytorch-cuda-out-of-memory-on-rtx-3060-fast/
What strategies have you found most effective for managing tight VRAM budgets on your hardware?

help request This or that: Dual-boot or completely replace the default OS (Windows 11) with Linux?
Choice A: Dual-booting Windows 11 (default) alongside my preferred Linux distro
Choice B: Completely replacing Windows 11 with my preferred Linux distro
Context: I am struggling with my current laptop setup because I am experiencing severe memory bottlenecks.
Current hardware specs (I own a budget-tier laptop):
- (C:) OS drive 12.7 GB free of 116GB
- (D:) Backup drive 200 GB free of 931 GB (1TB)
- 8 GB memory
- AMD Ryzen 5 3500U
- AMD Radeon Vega 8 (Picasso)
According to my research, Linux Mint is highly recommended as a lightweight Linux distribution for intensive web and database development.
My intention in asking here is to learn from someone with more experience regarding the trade-offs. So... enlighten me, guys!

jobs and hiring Interview with director dress attire HELP
I have a 2nd round interview for a IT position at a bank headquarters with the director of IT. This is the first time I’ve ever got to have a second round interview and more specifically a in person interview. I’ve been researching online what’s the best dress code. This is a more entry level position in IT but it is also a salary position. The first round interview it seems like most of the people were working from home and so I wasn’t able to get an accurate understanding of what I can expect to dress like. I also never confirmed with the HR recruiter on what the dress attire was (a fault on my laziness)a At my previous role at a Fortune 20 company, I never wore a tie and I did tuck my shirt or polo in and I wore chinos and some comfy dress shoes. I do have a black suit that I can wear with a white shirt which I’ve been thinking of wearing since this is a financial institution and more specifically at a headquarters building and the meeting is with a director. Still having second thoughts though that I might be overdressing, what should I finalize????
UPDATE: So i ended up wearing the suit with no tie and it worked out quite well. The person interviewing me was wearing a polo lol and he was the director himself! HR lady was dressed to part though which I kind of remember her dressed up even for the first round virtual. Still awaiting results on the turnout of the job, will know after this week since they had other candidates that they scheduled for 2nd round interviews. I do know though that it is the final round! Pray for me Reddit people!
