One thing I love about Linux gaming is being able to bring old games back to life

Honestly, one of the coolest things about Linux gaming is seeing older games run on systems they were never meant to support.

Between Proton, Wine, and community fixes, games that seemed abandoned or impossible to get working can suddenly become playable again. Sometimes you don't even need an official Linux port.

Sure, some games still take way too much tinkering to get running, but there's something satisfying about finally launching a game you thought you'd never get working.

It's also nice knowing that these games aren't necessarily lost just because the original developers stopped supporting them.

steam/steam deck Steam Case Cover - Family Sharing & Colored Case Covers update

Hey guys! I just wanted to share that I uploaded a new version (v.1.3.1) on GitHub.

This new release contain two new features:

  • Now you are able to apply the cover to games in your library that came from your family members. It will be displayed a green ribbon on it to represent it came from Family Sharing.
  • Also, you are now able to create custom colors for your cases. The default and supported one, regarding accessibility, will still be the original blue. However, you can now create basically any color you like.

I added some screenshots of the app to show how it is right now and also one of my own library to show the family sharing ribbon on Leaf it Alone.

As some people may know, I'm developing this in CachyOS and unfortunately my only Family Sharing member is my wife and she owns only 5 games, so those games were cached on my machine. If possible, I'd like the feedback of someone that uses Windows/macOS and have family members in their Steam Family that have multiple games. This is important because a big library from a family member may not be cached when you download the userdata.json file and then some covers may not be correctly applied.

If anyone tests this and give me a feedback saying it didn't work I'll start working immediately in a solution.

Thank you guys for using my tool!

I don't understand about shader pre-caching.

Right now, Windows gamers are all discussing a free program SCSKiller. From reading the description, it seems the program does exactly the same as what Steam shader precompilation does on Linux. It compiles game shaders out of the game and places the results into the GPU driver's cache.

Serious Youtube channels made tests and report huge improvements in low1% FPS in some games that are prone to stutters, while no effect on others. For example, Borderlands, Final Fantasy, Jedi Survivor.

Also, the AMD GPU driver for Windows has silently included the same functionality for a whitelist of games and didn't even tell.

Meanwhile, we on Linux routinely tell people to disable this option in Steam. Bazzite documentation tells to disable it, and Cachy forums too. I myself told people to disable it because the documentation says so. But now I have

Questions:

  • Is the situation with shader caching on Win and Lin somehow principally different, enough for it to be a great option on Win and not a good default on Lin?
  • Do you know any credible test of the performance effects of shader precompilation, done on games vulnerable to shader problems?

tech support wanted Differences in latency?

I'm curious to the explanation behind latency between running a game on desktop via Wayland and running a game in Steams dedicated game mode. From what I've researched, GameMode runs on Wayland but uses the Xwayland layer to run games. Confirmed when i ran mangohud and saw Xwayland used even with Wayland flag enabled in commands while using GameMode. I run the same game in desktop using ProtonCachyos for both, and now i see Wayland used. I do not perceive any latency differences tbh between the 2. So I'm wondering, did Steam optimize game mode to be competitive with modern display servers? Mind you I'm not a competitive gamer by any means. But i just watched a video by Brodie Robertson talking about latency between Wayland and X11. With Xwayland being drastically worse. It kind of sent me down a rabbit hole. The one thing i noticed in Game Modes favor was a much more even frame time average between min and max.

guide lsfg-vk is blocking goverlay downloads

Blocked by nginx rule when goverlay user-agent is detected

Hey guys,

Just a heads-up for anyone using Goverlay: downloads from builds.lsfg-vk.dev appear to be explicitly blocked when using Goverlay's User-Agent (HTTP 403), while standard requests work fine. At least for me, Opensource should be about collaboration for something greater. You don't need to love every project you see online, there's a lot of projects that i admire even if they're not for my taste or my daily driver.

I don't know If the amount of requisitions became a problem or if something else is bothering the author, you could always just ping the maintainer and have a chat like a normal person. We're all on the same side here, trying to make linux gaming cool.

Well that's it... the goal is keep things running smoothly for everyone.

tech support wanted Controller works in Faugus and in-game, but analog sticks are misconfigured. How do I remap them properly?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

I have a generic "DragonRise" USB controller. I finally got it detected by Faugus Launcher (using the built-in gamepad navigation option) and by the game itself.

The issue is that the left and right analog sticks are misconfigured. The buttons and d-pad work fine, but the sticks act weird or are mapped to the wrong axes.

I tried setting a global SDL_GAMECONTROLLERCONFIG variable via the terminal, but it didn't fix it (and I've since removed it). I also tried PROTON_DISABLE_HIDRAW=1, but no luck.

What is the correct, current way to remap the analog sticks for a generic controller so that both Faugus and the game read them as a standard Xbox controller?

Any help is appreciated!

tech support wanted Isolate monitors

My setup: PC with AMD and integrated GPUs. One monitor and one TV connected to the PC via HDMI. Two wireless controllers.

What I want to achieve: play full screen on the TV with the controller, while still using the PC as normal on the monitor, with keyboard and mouse.

Is gamescope the answer?

practical experience of getting aesthetic rices setup

i know the general experience of linux but assuming the endgoal is like those aesthetic uis you see on youtube what is the general step by step process, not specifically but more so the order of general events eg: get os setup( im gonna use cachy) , get wayland setup get hyprland setup download the dotfiles

i have a general understanding but i want a realistic order of events in what is needed and also the overall time taken

also do those setups include ui for the entire thing, startmenu, file explorer, settings etc, and how do those aspects of the windows ui function on linux , specifically arch linux which has more customisability but less included stuff

Wayland Wine Mouse and/or Keyboard input ignored after Alt+Tab

Wayland Wine Mouse and/or Keyboard input ignored after Alt+Tab.
Problem fixed using Tilda Terminal.

  1. run tilda terminal and assign pulldown shortcut
  2. run game
  3. alt tab out of game
  4. return to game (broken controls focus by now)
  5. shortcut tilda on (while in game)
  6. shortcut tilda off (now game regains original controls focus)

Detailed description:
- assigned global key to show terminal from: Tilda Terminal, popup menu - Preferences - Keybindings - PullDown Terminal shortcut. (Alt+F1, for example)
- started wine game
- switched with Alt+Tab and upon return to a game lost keyboard completely and mouse went jumpy
- activated Tilda Terminal with an assigned shortcut (Alt+F1). Terminal window activated on top of game window (game ran in fullscreen). and upon hiding terminal using same shortcut again wine game regained focus for keyboard and mouse smooth motion.

/wine 11, wayland, kde plasma 6.6.4
/system settings: legacy x11 app support: listening to keystrokes: 3rd option - as above, plus any key pressed while the Control, Alt or Meta key is also pressed, control of pointer and keyboard: not checked
/tested on several games
/TakeFocus registry key instructions did not work

hardware Cable suggestions for VR? Also, why has my old cable stopped working?

Hello, I've had decent luck making WiVRN work since steamVR REFUSES to connect to my Quest 3 using steam link, no surprise there, but my wifi is bad so WiVRN looks like Youtube at 144p and it doesn't seem to play nice with games lacking native OpenXR support. I also have older hardware so 5ghz only works with an external USB dongle and my external USB dongles are shite. When I used windows, I had this 17 foot long USB 3 cable I got off amazon that I used for VR shenanigans, but now that I'm using linux it magically seems to have lost its data transfer abilities. I've installed ADB and it seems to be working properly, as my quest has gone from telling me something like "meta doesn't have permission" to "the USB can't transfer data." Granted, the cable is very old, so it very well could just be broken and unable to transfer data now. I will need to test with a cable I know works to be sure ADB is working.

I am something of a linux noob but know my way around a computer well enough to follow instructions and I sorta kinda good enough know how to use the terminal.

What would be a good replacement to my old cable? I can't use the quest link cable because my computer has no USB C ports (and i refuse to spend 80 bucks on an 8 foot long cable).

Specs if needed:
Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon
Intel i5-6500

Nvidia GTX 1070

16gb ram

Old ass motherboard from 2017 I can't remember the name of

I can't run Bottles in other directory anymore

I have two partitions, the default partition (where the system is installed) and a separate partition for my stuff mounted as /myfiles.

I have a symbolic link to redirect ~/.var/app/com.usebottles.bottles/data to /myfiles/emu/bottles.

Bottles was working until I updated it. I updated it because I started a game that crashes. Now bottles doesn't start anymore and shows this error: absolute symlink not allowed for RESOLVE_BENEATH: Invalid link between devices

It works if I remove the symbolic link, but the partition where ~/.var/app/com.usebottles.bottles is doesn't have enough space for Bottles.

I may use another app only if it has sandboxing.

tech support wanted Issues with Wine and non-qwerty keyboard

Here's my case : I'm trying to play the GoG version of Dishonored through Heroic Game Launcher. My keyboard is azerty, on Windows you can just change the virtual layout, but it seems Wine doesn't care about the selected layout on Linux (from Gnome settings in my case).

Usually I just change the bindings and it kinda works. But for Dishonored, on the rebinding setting, each input is detected as NumLock.

Is there any systemic solution to this issue ?

Best Controller compatible with linux around 1500rs?

• Upvotes

Budget & Currency: ₹1,500 – ₹2,000 max (INR)

Country & Retailers: India (Amazon India, Flipkart)

Platform Compatibility: Linux & Android (wireless is a must; wired mode is a plus)

Desired Features: High durability and build quality (first controller and likely the last for a while, so minimal risk of stick drift is top priority), need hall effect joysticks and pressure sensitive triggers.

Games: GTA V, God of War, Hollow Knight, and casual/emulated games. (I dont have good graphics card so wont be playing latest high graphics games and i wont be playing linux native games. And also wont be playing multiplayer shooting games. Most of em will be working on wine. I use faugus).

Controllers: any (I know about the 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wireless, but it's out of my budget).

Looking for real user experiences rather than on-paper specs—if you've used a wireless pad in this budget range on Linux/Android, which one held up best over time?

Title: GTA V Legacy stops loading textures and eventually freezes on CachyOS

Hey guys, has anyone else had this problem with GTA V Legacy on Linux?

I'm running CachyOS with a GTX 1650, ryzen 2400g, and after playing for a while, the game starts having trouble loading textures. When I'm driving around, buildings and other objects stop loading properly, and eventually the game just freezes.

I've seen a few people report similar issues on CachyOS, so I'm wondering if this is a Linux/Proton issue or something else.

I've tried lowering the graphics settings, but it doesn't seem to fix the problem.

Has anyone managed to find a proper fix for this? I'd rather not switch distros just to play GTA V.

Thanks!
