Hi everyone!
I'm currently a first-year Software Engineering student at UKM, but I've been thinking about transferring to APU to study Game Development.
To be honest, I'm finding Software Engineering quite difficult and sometimes a bit boring. I think I could push through and finish the degree if I really wanted to, but I'm not sure if it's the right path for me.
I'm also older than most of my classmates, and I tend to overthink my future a lot. Sometimes I feel like I'm running out of time to find something I'm genuinely good at and passionate about.
But I still really want to keep learning and improving myself. I don't want to give up on university.
I've always loved video games, especially storytelling, character development, world-building, and the creative side of game design. I also have some background in art, and one of my dreams is to create my own indie game someday. I'm also considering pursuing a master's degree in game design in the future.
I recently visited APU and found the Game Development programme quite interesting. However, I've also seen a lot of mixed reviews about APU on Reddit, which makes me a little hesitant.
I'd really appreciate some honest opinions, especially from current APU Game Development students or graduates.
- How is the actual teaching quality?
- Does the programme focus more on programming, game art, or game design?
- How much group work is involved? Can students develop their own individual projects?
- Are there many students who are genuinely passionate about creating games?
- Is the game development community active and welcoming?
- Would you recommend APU for someone interested in indie game development or postgraduate studies?
I've also heard that APU recently updated its Game Development curriculum, so I'd be interested to know whether the new programme is better.
I know changing universities won't magically solve all my problems, and I understand that studying game development can be difficult too.
I'm just wondering if studying something I genuinely enjoy, in a more creative environment, might help me find more motivation and direction in life.
I'd also appreciate opinions from anyone familiar with both UKM and APU.
Thanks for reading. I'd really appreciate any advice!
