UPCAT 2027 Link: For freshman admission AY 2027-2028

Hi r/peyups:

We are posting this megathread to avoid spamming the subreddit with the same questions about UPCAT.

To recent examinees, we understand your stress and uncertainty since your future depends on this examination, but you need to realize that the r/peyups subreddit is not just for UPCAT. In fact, some questions are unanswerable like the rest of the community does not know your chances of qualifying.

Nonetheless, feel free to comment your reactions and comments or anything you can think of regarding the examination in the megathread. All similar posts after the upload of this announcement will be removed by the moderators and OP will be redirected to the Megathread, except for those important information that warrant the creation of a separate post.

Discussion [UPX] How to Start Reading Research Articles

UP is full of theses and is a great place to train a creative mind. It is full of great ideas and I want to be able to improve them even further.

For context, I'm in my first year of engineering college sa UPLB and I want to make it a habit to explore the studies in my field. I want to be able to understand the world and discover its potentials in the perspective of my degree program and beyond. I want to be able to reflect on the value of each of the lessons I learn in my courses (even general courses in engineering such as Physics)

  1. HOW DO I START?? (Consult professors? Familiarize the situation of the profession? Read in the library? Read online? Where to read?? What to read??)

  2. How can I contextualize myself first?

  3. To those who habitually read articles, what makes you want to read?

  4. Ano thought process nyo sa before, during, and after magbasa?

  5. How can I become reflexive when reading? (I can reflect on what the significance of the study is and how I can evaluate, apply, and improve it?)

  6. Aside from articles, what are other good accessible resources? (YouTube, or events for UP students)

Basta gusto kong magbasa at matuto.

Discussion [UPD] Hindi pala totoo yung sinasabi nila na mas dadali yung CS11 HOPE LOL

Im not sure if this is an isolated phenomenon but the second mock exam is brutal compared to the first. I thought magiging madali na ito since may loops na but oh boy! mas lalong humirap yung mga problems. Even a progmate of mine who scored 1400+ sa first HOPE ay nakasagot lang ng apat na problems sa second mock hope. Sa mga fellow cs11 takers dyan, what are your thoughts?

Rant / Share Feelings unresponsive groupmates

For context, nag-aral ulit ako after ng undergrad ko, so kapa kapa ulit kasi different college na.

so idk enlighten me siguro kung "it's a normal thing" na DI DAPAT TINOTOLERATE or minalas lang ako hahahaha

Course/Subject Help [UPD] I will be dropping BA 99.1.

Less than singko grado ko if lower than 55 grades ko sa LE 2 so need ko maperfect ang LE 3 and exams para matres - 2.75 max. Milagro talaga ang kailangan para lang makapasa.

It’s been weighing me down lately, if ever man na idodrop ko (abt 90% sureness) makakahabol pa kaya ako? Di ko maguage if marami bang magdodrop huhu. No choice na rin kasi if worst scenario. (which is too possible to deny 😭)

I think napunterya nung exams when it comes to problem solving.

Shifting/Transferring/Admissions [UPD] Can I apply for an MS unrelated to my BS degree?

• Upvotes

I'm from UPLB, expected to graduate next year (hopefully). I don't want to work yet because I don't like the job opportunities in my current program. Too late na rin nung na realize ko na ayaw ko talaga sa field so im hoping that with a masters i could successfully pivot out. MS AMAT mathematical finance yung ina-eye ko but i don't have advanced calculus or linear algebra sa undergraduate coursework ko. tatanggapin kaya nila ako?

hoping to hear thoughts here esp from those na nag ms with an unrelated bs!

Rant / Share Feelings [UPD] EEEI makes me want to die

First of all, professors are awful!

And tbh, even registered engineers make mistakes.

90% LE? tapos last iteration ng 123 eh one is to one pa ang grades. Really?

EEE 143 iteration na ā€˜first time’ naging 50% ang passing, nagtataka kayo bakit ganon. Tignan niyo kaya yung exams? I remember during the 2nd LE, most of the students na kasabay ko mag-take e puro pinili na lang matulog at halos lahat kami walang nasagot. Tapos next iteration mas hinirapan niyo pa lalo, anong mindset yan?

Make it make sense. Engineers kayo, engineering students kami.

Hello?

d. back to profs being awful, ang pangit niyo kausap! most of the profs napaka-dismissive kapag nagtatanong ka related sa lesson.

One of these days, EEEI you’ll be the reason of my death.

General Tips/Help/Question [UPD] Cleaning services for a small apartment?

hello, I just wanna ask if anyone knows any reliable deep cleaning services for small apartments? (like, yung size halos ng isang regular bedroom sa normal na bahay tapos may sariling kitchen + bathroom). medj napabaya namin ng roommates ko yung paglinis ng super ayos because we haven't had the time in a while due to acads and other personal reasons, kaya iniisip ko na magpadeep clean nalang muna kami at least once lang tapos after we'll try to work hard to maintain the cleanliness ulit.

Course/Subject Help upd study tips chem lec (LE3 and finals)

Just finished the 2nd LE earlier and I already know I will fail kasi mali lahat (or almost) ng problem solving part ko, which is 56 points and worth 50% of the LE 2. I made educated guess mostly sa multiple choice part, so I cannot rely on it either. I previously failed LE 1 with 50% grade 🄲. I am determined na bawiin siya sa LE 3 and/or sa finals po. Please please share genuine study tips, materials, or general advices because I am rally desperate for help. Your replies will be very valuable. Thank you po.

What I have been doing previously:

- Watching lots of YT videos (im an auditory-visual learner)

- Doing practice tests (I do yung mga binibigay ng orgs, prob sets, generated problems, YouTube)

My rooms for improvement

- Actually doing practice tests from the reference book (I don't do lahat before kasi tinitignan ko na yung solution kapag hindi ko na alam yung gagawin 😭)

- Cramming review in less than a week

- Not doing enough practice tests

Pls help ur iska out, pls chem set me freeee, and pls pls pls end the sem!!!

Shifting/Transferring/Admissions UPOU OAS - Pension

I'm trying to start my account in the new UPOU OAS. I reached this point where I have to declare the household income (which is just me and my Mom). I am a fresh grad, 3-months in my first job (which pays approx 30k monthly). My mom is still 10 years from retirement. How do I compute our annual pension?

Rant / Share Feelings [UPD] Wtf is happening with EEE 153

PS: Long rant incoming

Let’s talk about the current state of EEE 153 (and by extension, the ghost of EEE 143), because the disconnect between the handler's expectations and the reality of their assessments has reached a boiling point.

For those who don't know, EEE 143 used to be the breather course. It had an 80%+ passing rate and was widely considered the most manageable subject in EEEI (outside of the 1st year EEE courses). That was until two years ago, when the passing rate suddenly plummeted to 50%. The curriculum shifted, the difficulty spiked, and that brutal new standard has now carried directly over to EEE 153.

Here is the most frustrating part about this entire situation: the professors are actually great. They teach well, and they flood us with resources on UVLe. You walk out of lectures feeling like you genuinely grasp the material (at least in the first weeks when you were actually interested and passionate about the course). They even introduced discussion sessions recently which shows just how much they want you to learn. But then you sit down for the exam, and it is absolutely hell.

The exams are, for lack of a better word, diabolical. We are handed problems that look completely alien compared to what was discussed. When you look at previous LEs, I would say the students taking that exam then found it a bit difficult, but when you compare them to the more recent ones (as in the LEs this year), you will notice that the exams then were a walk in the park, absolutely easier than current ones. It’s not just about applying concepts, it feels like they expect you to have memorized every microscopic nook, cranny, and edge-case from both the lectures and obscure external materials just to figure out how to start step one of a problem.

But worse than that, their way of grading the exams is horrendous.

Engineering is inherently about process, methodology, and problem-solving. Yet, these exams are somehow graded on a strict right-or-wrong binary. You can map out the entire logic of a complex system, demonstrate your understanding of the underlying principles, and at least show the effort of trying to answer the already difficult problem. But if they find your work/solution unsatisfactory? Yes sometimes they give partial points, but I would not be surprised if they gave you absolutely nothing. Zero points. A complete invalidation of the learning you actually did.

And now, what's frustrating is the handlers have been complaining about how the recent batch is "lackluster."

You cannot fundamentally alter a course to make it hellishly difficult, design exams with alien problems, enforce a zero-tolerance policy for partial credit on complex engineering calculations, and then blame the students when the metrics drop. It is incredibly tone-deaf to artificially engineer a bottleneck and then act disappointed in the water for not flowing through it.

We aren't a lackluster batch. We are just exhausted from navigating an assessment system that feels designed to catch us out rather than measure what we’ve actually learned. You know it's really bad when the students are already considering dropping the course just after LE1. And not that LE2 just wrapped up, and the final results of LE1 have arrived, I would not be surprised if the majority is already considering dropping, or just accepting the inevitable 5.00.
