Hope its the right place

This is the only place I figured someone would know about these. I have a few hundred of these post marks from Naval ships my dad collected over the years. They are in storage books and some are just in a box, so not the best storage. But, that all being said, there are some cool ones such as one from the Scorpion and the Thresher. Is there an online resource to figure out what the heck I actually have here? Thanks in advance and if this isn't the right place, let me know.

My Collection My color/type study of the 2 cent stamp(s) of the U.S. 1st Bureau Issue

(Numbers for each stamp in the 2nd and 3rd images are the Scott catalogue numbers.)

I bought a shoebox full of 2c red stamps about 15 years ago, all wrapped in small twine bundles. The dealer didn't want it because it would be too much work to sort. He was correct from a dealer's perspective; I finally got around to sorting just the 1st Bureau Issue, and it has taken several hundred hours to get through several thousand of these stamps.

But this is the final result: 39 out of the 42 listed varieties in the Scott U.S. specialized catalogue, defined by their Type (1, 2, 3, or 4), watermark, and color. I'm missing 267c (Rose Carmine), and two other colors of 279Bc (Bright Rose Carmine & Pinkish Rose Carmine), but that's not surprising given their scarcity.

Obviously, each color has some amount of variety within it, but each stamp in this study is the best representation I can find (according to my estimation).

I did eventually find some used 279Bc's, but I shelled out for a genuine certified copy (which I included on this page) to be sure I was identifying the color correctly.

There are two stamps I've found so far that seem to be unlisted colors - 1) a Scott 265 that appears to be pink, and 2) a Scott 279B that appears to be lake or carmine lake. I plan to send these in for certs at some point, because it's possible they're changelings or have been chemically altered.

Finally, the colors shown in these images are as close as I can get my scanner to the real life colors. The stamps that appear most off-color in the images are the scarlet and vermilion shades, which are little more orange than the pictures show.

Lots more sorting to go...

I hope you find this interesting though!

Other (custom) Trading Cards featuring stamps

Post image

I have a few spare stamps, and I like to collect cards. I had in mind a few days ago to create trading cards around a specific theme, mimicking what was done in the 80's/90's with educational cards : design on the front, description on the back.

My idea would be to print the front and back separately, cut the white hole in the center for the front card, place the stamp in the middle of the back card, bring a piece of thin plastic paper and glue all that together.

Is it too much work ? Perhaps. But I'll try. In the meantime, I did mockups in Photoshop, without using AI. Just good ol' pictures and a hand drawn logo for the "Stamp Cards" !

I'll post more picture if the result is not catastrophic!

Opinion Piece A Train Wreck on a Vegetable-Soup-Soaked Kitchen Rag

Post image

😄Right, Let’s start with the colors.
We’ve got radioactive yellow, swamp green, and a rather alarming shade of brown that looks like something you’d find at the bottom of a toilet in an abandoned gas station.
It’s an extraordinary achievement, really. The scenery around the Nine Arch Viaduct is famously beautiful, and yet here it looks like someone’s spilled a bucket of vegetable soup over a perfectly good photograph.
Now, the diamond-shaped format is rather interesting. Unfortunately, instead of making the bridge stand out, it seems to have provided even more opportunities to cram things into the composition. There’s so much competing for attention that the magnificent viaduct has all the visual elegance of a tourist brochure that’s been through the washing machine with a pair of muddy hiking boots.
And then there’s the lettering, which has been thoughtfully arranged around the bottom like a warning label on a bottle of industrial drain cleaner.
Every letter has a thick white outline, presumably because otherwise it would disappear into the rather unfortunate collection of colors underneath.

A magnificent piece of railway engineering, commemorated by something that looks like it was recovered from a blocked kitchen sink.

Which stamp deserves the Perforated Disasters treatment next? Let me know in the comments!

My Collection Been begging my USPS Office to let me buy it.

Every week for the last 5 years I’ve asked the clerks about buying this item. I don’t particularly like the new design with the big eagle logo.
Every time they would say is not for sale or it is unable ring on the register. Until last year the postmaster or a supervisor took it off the shelf and hid it in the back.
Today I asked the clerk if they had more in the back and he brought it. Rang it manually for $16.

You have no idea how happy I am. Perhaps is not that rare or not that big of a deal but it has been a side mission on my queue for quite some time. For as much as I want to use it I love how it looks in the packaging…

PERFORATED DISASTERS : Celebrating Questionable Design Decisions

PERFORATED DISASTERS
Celebrating Questionable Design Decisions
Okay, let’s be honest. Most postage stamps are beautifully designed, with a lot of thought and creativity put into them.
But every now and then, you come across a stamp that makes you wonder what on earth happened. It’s as if the whole thing was put together by a committee of blindfolded raccoons fighting over a broken laptop, five minutes before the printing deadline.
Some of these stamps are absolute eyesores and genuine album weeds, despite celebrating some truly amazing subjects.
And I’ve accumulated quite a few of these little disasters over the years. Frankly, I’ve been itching to say something about them.
Now, this isn’t a personal attack on anyone. It’s simply my opinion of some truly dreadful stamp designs that have somehow found their way into my collection.
And since they’ve already taken up valuable space in my albums and given me mild nausea every time I look at them, I figure the least they can do is provide a few laughs.
So, welcome to Perforated Disasters, where questionable design decisions finally get the attention they probably never wanted.
What’s the most horribly designed stamp in your collection?

Make sure to follow along on Instagram for a good laugh!

This canceller commemorating the state visit of the Sultan Bin Tarik Al Said of Oman to GB was on a piece of mail which arrived this morning. It's not often we get commemorative slogan cancellers these days, especially readable ones.
