Announcement How to use flairs

How to use flairs on r/shortcuts (so your post doesn’t get nuked or ignored)

Flairs are labels. You pick one so people instantly know what your post is about. Pick the wrong one and congrats, you’ve confused everyone.

---

First rule: always use a flair

No flair = your post is either ignored or removed. Nobody enjoys guessing what you meant.

---

Pick the right flair (this is not a personality test)

- Help

You already made a shortcut and it’s broken or not doing what you want. You want someone to fix it or explain what went wrong.

- Help (Mac)

Same as above, but your problem is on Mac. Yes, that matters because Mac Shortcuts can behave differently.

- Shortcut sharing

You built something and want to share it. You must explain what it does properly. “Cool shortcut lol” is how your post gets deleted.

- Shortcut sharing (JB)

Same as sharing, but it only works on a jailbroken device. If people need to hack their phone to use it, say so.

- Shortcut sharing (mac)

Your shortcut only works on Mac. Don’t trick iPhone users into disappointment.

- Tip/guide

You figured out a useful trick or workaround. You’re teaching something, not asking.

- Tip/guide (mac)

Same idea, but Mac-specific.

- Request

You want a shortcut but can’t build it yourself. This is you politely asking the internet to do work for you.

- Request (mac)

Same, but for Mac users.

- Discussion

You want opinions, ideas, or a conversation about Shortcuts. Not help, not sharing, just talking.

---

Special flair (pay attention, this one’s new)

- Appstore (app)

Use this when you’re posting about an app that works with Shortcuts. Either you made it or found it. The key point: the app connects with Shortcuts (actions, automations, etc.).

If it has nothing to do with Shortcuts, don’t use this just because you like the app.

---

How to choose without overthinking it

Ask yourself one question:

“What do I want from this post?”

- Fix something → Help

- Show something → Shortcut sharing

- Teach something → Tip/guide

- Ask for something → Request

- Talk about something → Discussion

- Share actual news → News

- Show an app tied to Shortcuts → Appstore (app)

If you’re on Mac, pick the Mac version. Not complicated.

---

Final reality check

Flairs exist so the subreddit doesn’t turn into a digital junk drawer. Pick the correct one, write a clear post, and people will actually help you instead of scrolling past like you don’t exist.

Help please with a battery automation

Hi - so would like to know if this is possible - I have a current shortcut that speaks a phrase when I plug in the iphone to charge, and now would like another shortcut that speaks "on battery" when the iphone loses its charging state. Is this possible? If so can someone smarter than me post it?

Shortcut Sharing Rename screenshots based on app name and date/time taken

This is based on a previous screenshot renaming shortcut by u/Cost_Internal and u/iBanks3 and a date/time suffixer by u/pmarksen. Based on the discussion here, just deleting the original inputs didn't seem to work, so I had the idea to generate a list of timestamps to figure out how to get the original screenshot to be deleted from Cost_Internal's shortcut.

I've tried taking different numbers of screenshots at staggered times and it seems to be working so far. One issue is that iOS only 'completes' the screenshot process if you swipe the mini preview away or wait until it disappears, and the shortcut only runs after that. So if you switch apps before that, the app name will be whatever app you're on then. Or if you close the app too quickly the app name will be blank. If you have suggestions to improve this or other parts of the shortcut do share!

Shortcut Sharing Link Studio V1 — 7 Website Tools in One Shortcut!

Thumbnail
gallery
37 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’m back with another shortcut I’ve been working on, and honestly, this might be one of my favorite projects yet.

Introducing Link Studio V1!

It’s an incredibly powerful shortcut that combines seven different website tools into one:

Website Inspector - Get webpage titles, links, and information, including links found within text.
Article Reader - Read webpage content in a cleaner format.
Media Finder - Find images and media from websites.
Link Library - Save, view, and delete links.
Link Extractor - Extract multiple links, copy them, save them, or turn them into PDFs.
Website Archiver - Save webpages as PDFs with automatic titles and dates.
Link Toolkit - Copy, open, inspect, and share URLs.

One thing I want to mention: I originally designed Link Studio to work when you have a link copied to your clipboard or shared directly to the shortcut. Because of that, you currently need a link to access the menu, even for features like viewing saved links or the About section.

It’s something I plan to improve in V2!

I’ve spent quite a bit of time putting this together, testing things, and figuring out what works. I’m genuinely proud of how it turned out.

I’d love to hear what you think! If you run into any issues or have suggestions, please let me know. I appreciate all the feedback and support.

Download Link Studio V1:

Please upvote if you found this useful or interesting, and drop me a follow if you would like to keep up with any new shortcuts I drop.

Thanks for checking it out!

Help Automations vanished

Over the weeekend all of my automations just disappeared. I had over 40 automations configured on my phone and now they are just gone, the shortcuts are still there thankfully. Has anybody else had this happen?

Edit: Based on when the last automation’s successfully ran it appears to have happened when I logged into my new MacBook. Is there possibly a bug where adding a Mac resets automations?

Edit 2: I’m not talking about the iOS 27 change where they merged automations with shortcuts. I updated as soon as iOS 27 was available and have had no issues until this weekend when all of my automations just stopped working. When I investigated it I found the automations folder under library is empty.

Grazie

Appstore (App) Update: my Mac app for editing complicated shortcuts now has groups, snippets and a minimap

A while ago I posted a Mac app that lays a shortcut out as a diagram instead of one long list, so you can see the shape of what you’re building. Thanks to everyone who tried it.

The original problem was big shortcuts, and they were still hard to work with once they got really big. So the new version is all about that:

  • Groups: select a few actions and press ⌘G to fold them into one named card.
  • Minimap: a small overview in the corner, click or drag it to jump around.
  • Snippets: save a set of actions and drop a copy into any other shortcut.
  • Export the whole canvas as PNG or PDF, so you can share a shortcut here and people can actually read it.
Group actions

None of this changes your shortcut. Groups only change how it looks in the editor, and what you paste back into Shortcuts is exactly the same.

Link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/shortcuts-editor/id6799502399?mt=12

What’s the biggest shortcut you’ve got? I’d like to know if it holds up.

Please let me know if you have any suggestion.

Appstore (App) I made a shortcut that uses AI to turn a recipe screenshot or caption into grocery items in Reminders, skipping what's already on your list

This is for recipes in screenshots and captions, where getting the ingredients into Reminders means typing them in one at a time.

You share a screenshot of a recipe, or select the ingredient text and share that (from Safari, Notes or a caption). It then does four things:

  1. For a screenshot, Apple's on-device Extract Text reads the text.
  2. It reads the open items on your Reminders grocery list.
  3. It sends the recipe text and that list to the Ask for Dictionary action in AI Actions, an app I make. The model sorts each ingredient into buy, already on your list, or always at home (salt, pepper, cooking oil and water by default, editable in the shortcut).
  4. It shows the things to buy, all ticked, so you can untick what you don't need. Nothing is added until you tap Done.

When the model says an item is already on your list, it has to quote the matching entry. If that entry isn't there, the shortcut adds the item anyway, so a wrong match means a duplicate and not a missing ingredient. I added that after one test run claimed an onion was already on my list. It also sometimes puts sunflower oil under buy, so check the tick list.

Here's the shortcut: https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/4e18ab6b909c4d58a067287c399f0afe

The app is on the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6447460842?pt=126224582&ct=rshortcuts-recipe-to-groceries&mt=8

It needs iOS 17 or later. When you add it, it asks which Reminders list to add to. It also reads that list by name to see what's already on it, so if yours isn't called Groceries, change the name in the first Text action too. The action is in the app's free tier (8 runs a day), so you don't need a subscription or an API key. The recipe text and your open grocery items go through my server to OpenAI, and the privacy policy (https://apps.9592.tech/ai-actions/privacy) says the server doesn't store prompts or responses. The first run asks a few permission questions.

I tested it on an iOS 18 simulator with a caption, a cookbook screenshot, and one recipe run twice (the second run added nothing).

I'd be curious whether a fixed "always at home" list works for you, or whether you'd want it to ask about pantry items each time.

Shortcut Sharing Lost! A game like Minecraft but in Shortcuts!

Note that “Lost” wasn’t made by me and the publisher is unknown, if you have any information from where it came from DM me! I have also made small adjustments in the original shortcut so that you get to have a randomized world generator! For this to happen I made a shortcut that works as an extension, you run it and it copies the world code in your clipboard, and when running the main shortcut you will have the option to either use the default terrain or the one in your clipboard, cheers! 🥂

Help Infinite loop issue on iOS 27.2?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have two shortcuts that toggles all alarms on or off. I had no issues with these on iOS 26, but after I updated to 27 I started noticing this infinite loop.

Currently have 5 alarms but number of alarms doesn't seem to matter. Even if I limit it to one alarm, I still see the infinite loop.

Toggling itself works instantly though. Its just this shortcut lingering forever until I manually stop it.

Not sure if anyone else can reproduce this on their phone but was there any Shortcut updates introduced in 27 that possibly breaks this logic?

Request I would like an Overcast app shortcut that toggles 1.5x speed and smart speed on and off

I'd love an Apple Shortcute that toggles on 1.5x speed and smart speed. The tricky part of this is making it a single shortcut that does both of these things, and then once run again goes back to normal speed with smart speed off.

So in other words, a toggle switch that goes back and forth between 1.5x with smart speed and normal workout smart speed.

I feel like it is possible but I'm just not good at making shortcuts.

Discussion What shortcut do you wish existed but can’t find (or can’t build)?

Hey everyone! I'm planning my next shortcuts and would rather build something people actually need than guess.

So I'd love to know:-

  1. What do you do on your phone repeatedly that feels like it should be automated?
  2. Is there a shortcut you tried to build but gave up on? What part broke or got too complicated?
  3. Any shortcut you used to love that stopped working after an iOS update or an API change?
  4. Which category do you care about most? Media, productivity, files, utilities, social, AI/APIs, or something else.

The more specific, the better. "Something for music" is hard to build. "Grab the song playing in a video and add it to my Apple Music playlist" is something I can actually make.

If something gets a lot of interest, I'll build it and share it here properly when it's done.

Thanks! 🙌

Edit:- Hey a lot of people have commented so I’ll try to get back to everyone gradually. There are some really cool ideas, although unfortunately, a few things aren’t possible with Shortcuts. I’ll do my best to reply to everyone

Appstore (App) I built a free app around Shortcuts to make the new iOS27 Siri voice read you anything. It's the free on-device TTS voice I've tried.

Post image
16 Upvotes

I built Natural Voice Reader, a free text-to-speech app that uses Shortcuts to make iOS 27’s expressive Siri voice read you anything.

Apple doesn’t let third-party apps access this voice directly, only standard voices like Samantha. This app uses a Shortcut to generate the audio, then brings it back into the app for playback.

It includes word-by-word highlighting, playback controls, adjustable speed, and audio export. Recordings are saved for repeat listening.

100% free. No ads, subscriptions, locked features, or API keys.

Requires: iOS 27, a device supporting Siri’s expressive voice, and a one-time Shortcut installation.

It’s brand new, and I’d love feedback, especially from fellow Shortcuts users!

Request Shortcut to unlock Lucid Air Touring?

Since the Auto Unlock feature on my Lucid Air Touring is glitchy, has anyone been able to create a shortcut for iPhone or Apple Watch(especially the action button) that you can use to unlock the Air Touring? I had to disable the Auto Unlock as it was triggering every few minutes for a couple days/nights randomly.

Help Apple TV sleep timer

Why isn’t there an option to set a sleep timer in an Apple TV in shortcuts?! It seems like something straightforward to do. I have a bedtime shortcut set up, which turns on my bedroom tv. I want it to switch off after 45 minutes, but can’t for the life of me figure out how to set it up via a shortcut.

I’ve tried “wait 2700 seconds” but it seems to time out for some reason! Any help would be much appreciated.

Discussion Why isn’t shortcuts as popular on Mac as iOS…?Am I just not looking in the right places? Any communities that compare to this one?

edit: this was a stupid question I didn’t think through lol- so much makes sense now upon being given the obvious answer to this🙃

r/ShortcutsMac is barely active, there’s ofc sites with articles/etc, but I want to engage with a space that’s as active as this one. And I don’t see Mac mentioned as much here.

And with that, the YouTube content is either minimal, or my algorithm hates me- any recommendations for creators who prioritize making content about shortcuts on MacOS specifically? It seems Stephen Robles does on occasion, and though I enjoy his content for iOS, I don’t really prefer it for Mac stuff.
