Conversation Topic How do K-Pop male singers manage to sing this high comfortably?

This is not the style I aspire to sing in but I am a tenor and have been taking voice lessons for 4 months now. I am gently learning to sing a D4 in chest, how do these tenors manage to sing comfortably all the way up to G#4? My voice stops after D#4 and I occasionally sing an E4 without any proper control or good technique.

Is my lack of upper register the issue? My head voice is basically nonexistent. Have never practiced it and I don’t know how, most exercises don’t feel ‘good on my voice’ and I can’t ever find exercises that cater to beginners. Everything seems out of my range and too demanding on my voice, it doesn’t sound nice when I do it. It feels counterproductive and oversimplifies technique to me.

Conversation Topic How do some singers' voices sound so rich and full? When I try to sing the exact same thing, my voice comes out thin, despite what I hear in my head.

The best example of this is this cover by Sibila of Heart Shaped Box: https://youtu.be/icVG9dOpkfY?list=RDicVG9dOpkfY

I do not understand, how does his voice sound so rich singing that? I notice he sings one octave lower than where Kurt sings it. However, when I try to sing like that, I just end up sounding thin.

I, as a bass, am wondering how to achieve this quality. I find that my vocal range (B1 - F4) is mostly useless up until A3 - B3. Below that, my vocals just get buried by the band and the music.

I notice that he easily sits on top of the mix despite singing quite low. How?

Thank you!

Conversation Topic When a male/female do a duet, does the female usually sing the higher harmony?

is there a reason? I understand they are just naturally higher than male voices.

an example, Everly Bro Let it be me, Phil took the higher harmony, but in 1974 when he sang live with Cillia black it seems that he took the lead which was the lower harmony, it seemed natural though but he was used to singing the higher part.

Did Linda mccartney sing higher parts than Paul on the Wings?

Conversation Topic How long should a teacher let a student chase the range extension dream before being honest or realistic about limits?

Hi all, I discontinued singing lessons in Sept. because I worked with 3 different vocal instructors and 2 SLPs over the past 4.5+ years and have not achieved my goal of extending my upper range. Any progress I made was objectively extremely minimal. The one specific instructor that I had taken lessons twice per month over the past 2.5+ years kept believing that I could extend upper range, but I’ve objectively been stuck at a Bb4 for the past several years, and only can get to that note on certain exercises and can’t really sustain it. Rather than continue chasing the dream of an incredible upper range, and keep paying money for lessons, I discontinued singing lessons in Sept.

It seems to me that vocal instructors should be more honest (or more realistic) when a student hits a plateau for years but my experience is they will keep taking your money. Just wondering if that’s the case for all instructors, or are any actually more honest or more realistic in letting the student know that it’s most likely they’ve reached their physical upper limitations? My experience is that what is possible for, say, a 20 or 30 year old (or even a 40 yr old) hasn’t been possible for an “older” singer like me. That’s not to say it won’t be possible for other “older” singers. I’m speaking about my own experience.

Teachers can hide behind the idea that it’s just not possible to know someone’s actual physical limit and therefore one must trust in the technique to make progress, but if someone, especially an “older” singer like me, has been working for years and stuck on the same note it’s most likely a physical limit and not a matter of the student “just not getting it” or “just not finding the right coordination” or “just not having found the right set of exercises” or even “just not having found the right teacher” for that matter. In general, I feel teachers need to acknowledge physical limits rather than act like they don’t exist.

My teacher for the past 2.5 years had a program where the monthly rate for two lessons was reasonable so I certainly harbor no ill will. He can sing well into the 5th octave and sing metal which is very high and can sing as low as me. After years with little to zero objective extension of upper range it’s time to work on my own. The other two instructors I worked with during this 4.5+ year period both can sing as low as me and sing well into the 5th octave as well. However, my voice just doesn’t want to get above a Bb4 in a connected mix regardless of who I work with. And since I don’t want to try fold injections I have to accept my limits. I can’t even reliably get above a B4 in pure falsetto although I can do M3 whistle-type squeaks to go higher but those squeaks are unreliable in a different way. Hence I have to accept my limits.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) What exactly do I need to improve with singing this song (Alone by Heart)? I also find that singing this while lying down is easier, which I do in this recording, but it might have impacted breath/tone.

I am not the most confident with my voice as I feel like it is too bland. I am really inspired by Karen Carpenter vocals, and how smooth and clear they are. I really want my voice to emulate that - for my vocals to sound like I am singing directly to you, if that makes sense. Please tell me what you think. Be honest with me. I really want to improve. My breathing technique is not the best. In fact, my singing technique is not the best, but I want to work on it.

Conversation Topic How to continue doing what you love without support?

I have been singing for maybe 2 years now, I still consider myself a baby at it. I absolutely love it though, and I want to take up production classes (or at least learn it at home) and take on music theory. I only do contemporary, but would love to explore more.

The thing is, I am a college student, who is currently studying a subject I do enjoy but I love singing/creativity more. I got into college just recently and stay with my family.

However, there are payments and bills I have responsibility over. Since my family is unemployed and doesn't want to figure out how to manage, they told me to give up singing lessons in exchange for using some of my money for expenses. I do want to say everything is fine; it's just some things will be covered by me.

This made me really sensitive though, which I don't feel often. Cause I know my family and extended don't appreciate my journey, and to be honest I tend to hide what I want to do.

I am not confident enough or skilled enough to continue on my own just yet, my voice at most is decent and I still barely can unlock belting properly.

I can't find many affordable options, but not even that. My family doesn't want to hear me sing at all. So, I would have to stay away from home and find somewhere to study.

I feel so bothered and I wish I was better. Does anyone else deal with having people disapproving of singing?

Conversation Topic People keep saying I have a "singing voice"

I've not really had an interest in singing, but throughout my life, I've had people, even strangers, tell me that I have a singing voice (or even for narration).

I'm not sure what to think of it. Should I pursue this? Or is it just something that happens to people and I should take this with a grain of salt?

It's just I really love singing those pretty ethereal songs with high notes but I'm a guy, so is that like against some rules or something? Like I have to lower the key or the song police will come after me?

Conversation Topic Why exactly did Robert Plant lose his voice?

I've been watching some Chris Liepe (the greatest) and his vidoes on mixed voice always mention both/either chris cornell and robert plant. from what i understand you need impeccable support and technique to even slide into the mixed voice. So how exactly did he lose his voice if he was doing it with such technique

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Advice Requested: My throat hurts even when I sing with proper technique!

I (27F) have been taking voice lessons for 3 months, but am still dealing with pain in my throat when singing, and we aren't even using words yet.

I have tried several voice coaches and finally found one who has been able to make some progress with me! He is very knowledgeable and encouraging, but I am feeling quite frustrated with myself as 3 months later I am still dealing with the pain several times in a lesson, and we haven't even used words yet. I trust my teacher, but am curious if anyone has any insights or ways of describing things that we haven't thought of. Any advice would be welcomed!

Side notes: most of the time people only know it hurts when I tell them. My tone/pitch is pretty good, and I only sound like I'm straining when my voice is ready to give out (I no longer sing to this point). Singing in my head voice with vibrato is the most comfortable for me right now.

These are some things I am already mindful of, since this is usually the most common advice.

  • Breathing with support from my diaphragm
  • Relaxing my throat/larynx (this is difficult for my to physically feel - I do lots of yawning during lessons to work on this + lifting my soft palate, and manually manipulating with my hands has helped a lot as well)
  • Relaxing my tongue
  • Always warmup
  • Hydrate beforehand
  • Keeping good posture
  • Practice on my own every other day + never push through the pain
  • There are obviously many other things but this list is already long lol

Thank you in advance! I'm a trained dancer, and would love to audition for musical theatre shows in the future, but obviously cannot do that until I get over this issue/have a rep book/etc. :)

Conversation Topic BEST COMPLIMENTS EVER.

So the other day I was going to AAU (or whatever it is) basketball practice. We didnt have a bus or anything so my coach drove 6 girls, which included me, my brother was in the trunk becuase he couldnt be at home alone, and the coaches son was back there with my brother. SO were driving on the freeway and people are recommending songs and singing them. I recommend a song and start listening. And, I kid you not, the girl next to me is like "arent you gonna sing? You recommended the song so you gotta do it" and I agreed becuase that made sense. So were singing the song and it gets to a decently difficult high note. I hit that shit. The girls started cheering while the next person was singing, and when we get to the next song, it was that one popular song with the crazy hughnote dead in the beginning and first chorus (its not Adele or anything. The song was called Love but I forgot the artist) and I hit that shit to.

So fast foward to today, the crossing guard was talking to me while I was waiting to cross. She asked me what highschool I wanted to go yo and I said ChiArts becuase I live in Chicago and I love music and the arts in general. The crossing guards daughter, WHO WAS IN THE CAR WHEN WE WERE SINGING, dead ass said to her mother "Yeah! She can sing amazing!"

That was the day my heart blew up with happiness.

Ps. I had my violin with me and a little girl was crying. I taught her about the instrument and it made her happy. Today was a good day.

Conversation Topic Guidance?

• Upvotes

(I didn’t see where this subject would be against the rules, but please excuse me if this is not allowed and remove my post.) Recently, I started voice lessons. It’s the only thing that I do for myself. When I was younger, I was always told that I had potential as a singer, but because of an undiagnosed learning difference, I was never allowed to take lessons. School performance came first. Now as a fully grown adult, I am taking those lessons. I don’t want to pursue a career in singing or even sing at my local karaoke night. I just want to sing for myself, to feel I am good at something other than my career. My voice teacher is just starting to help me realize a tiny piece of that potential, but I am getting in the way of myself. Practice at home is cripplingly difficult. I live in an apartment with poor sound-proofing and have neighbors working rotating shifts that I try to be respectful of. I am also mortified that someone will hear me and perhaps wonder if I’m being strangled. Right now I am at the stage where I don’t sound very nice most of the time. It’s not that I mind where I am, there’s progress being made. I mind being observed and disrupting someone’s peace. It’s so strong an aversion that I can feel my chest getting tight just typing this out. I have the least inhibition when I’m in my car. Since I’m not worried about being heard, the quality of sound I can produce is much better.  The trade-off is that I can’t stand properly, don’t feel like I’m getting my breath properly, and can’t utilize some of the tips my voice teacher has given me to help grow my voice. My world is pretty small and I don’t have anywhere else to practice other than home and my car. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Got compared to Mariah Carey in my last post (overdoing the riffs and runs), so I thought I'd try the first verse and chorus of my all to be even more annoying with the melismas lol. One take, the breath control is literally impossible for this song haha. feedback always welcome ofc.

Conversation Topic Air from the heavens

Hey guys!
I 32M recently restructured how I thought about my airflow. When I thought about it biologically it felt like I was pushing the air up from my lungs, you know like the path it would literally travel. But recently I started to picture it as the air coming through the top of my head and doing a curve as it comes out of my mouth and it feels like a game changer. (Could also be my way of picturing my soft palette lifting as well)

Also I saw something online about when singing, making sure that is air coming out of your mouth and nose at the same time, and I don’t know if it’s obvious that it would be doing that, but with the new line of thinking I’ve been doing I’ve been able to feel the air come out of both equally.

I don’t know how relatable this is to anyone or if it’s real specific to me but anyone else relate to this? And have any tips on what to think about next to keep improving and exploring?

Conversation Topic How to get into learning clean vocals for metal

I have been doing distorted vocals in one black metal bend for past one year. Now we are starting to record our debut album and we plan to have clean vocals featured in it. Where should i begin in learning clean vocals?
