The airborne view of this rocket plume is surreal: from deep sunset crimson and amber along the lower contrail up to the electric-blue "space jellyfish" expanding in the mesosphere, the transition reveals Earth's shadow line in real time

The Shuttle Enterprise (Orbiter Vehicle 101) rolls out of the Palmdale manufacturing facilities with Star Trek television cast members. From left to right they are: Dr. James D. Fletcher, NASA Administrator, DeForest Kelley (Dr. "Bones" McCoy), George Takei (Mr. Sulu), James Doohan (Mr. Scott), Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura), Leonard Nimoy (the indefatigable Mr. Spock), Gene Rodenberry (The Great Bird of the Galaxy), and Walter Koenig (Ensign Pavel Chekov).

Pro/Processed Supernova remnant Cassiopeia A between 2022 and 2025. JWST NIRCam

Video

Black and white image of the expanding clouds.

.

Expansion of the remnant on the upper right. Moving knots on the lower left. Fast changing regions are the light echo from the light of the explosion. #JWST NIRCam F444W images.

There not only an expansion of the bright material, but also new bright material appearing (center in the upper left). Maybe an astronomer can explain this. Material that only now gets shocked?

Video

Material moving towards the lower right with new material seemingly appearing at the upper left rim.

NASA M42: The Great Nebula in Orion

Post image
156 Upvotes

The Great Nebula in Orion, an immense, nearby starbirth region, is one of the most famous of all astronomical nebulas. Here, glowing gas surrounds hot young stars at the edge of an immense interstellar molecular cloud only 1500 light-years away. In the featured deep image in assigned colors highlighted by emission in hydrogen, wisps and sheets of dust and gas are particularly evident.

The Great Nebula in Orion can be found with the unaided eye near the easily identifiable belt of three stars in the popular constellation Orion. In addition to housing a bright open cluster of stars known as the Trapezium, the Orion Nebula contains many stellar nurseries.

These nurseries contain much hydrogen gas, hot young stars, proplyds, and stellar jets spewing material at high speeds. Also known as M42, the Orion Nebula spans about 40 light years and is located in the same spiral arm of our Galaxy as the Sun.

Art/Render Dark Matter in a Simulated Universe

Post image
3.9k Upvotes

The featured image from the American Museum of Natural History's Hayden Planetarium Space Show, Dark Universe, highlights one example of how pervasive dark matter might haunt our universe.

In this frame from a detailed computer simulation, complex filaments of dark matter, shown in black, are strewn about the universe like spider webs, while the relatively rare clumps of familiar baryonic matter are colored orange.

These simulations are good statistical matches to astronomical observations. In what is perhaps a scarier turn of events, dark matter -- although quite strange and in an unknown form -- is no longer thought to be the strangest source of gravity in the universe. That honor now falls to dark energy, a more uniform source of repulsive gravity that seems to now dominate the expansion of the entire universe.

Pro/Processed Rocks on Mars, photographed today

This scene is a composite of two NASA Perseverance rover Left Navigation Camera (Navcam) images, taken Saturday, 24 October 2026 at a local Jezero Crater time of 1:20 pm.

Colour and white balance adjusted to better match human vision.

Abraded material and drill tailings indicate where the rover has characterized and retrieved a sample from these rocks. That's not to say that the rover will take that sample onboard for long-term storage.

Amateur/Composite Neptune & Its Brightest Moon Triton In Relatively High Quality.

Post image
122 Upvotes

Figured out a new method for capturing the moon on seestar s50, first turn on the LP filter (you wanna do this because triton emits more in this spectrum, so it isolates it from the glare of neptune) then turn on 4k mode, then let it run for 1 minute. then use a RAW video composite to capture the planet. Put the two together and boom! You now have a high quality composite of neptune and triton side by side.

The first photos taken from space were taken on October 24, 1946 on the sub-orbital U.S.-launched V-2 rocket (flight #13) at White Sands Missile Range. Photos were taken every second and a half. The highest altitude (65 miles, 105 km) was 5 times higher than any picture taken before.
