Hi all,
I just wanted to share my findings in case anyone else is looking for an affordable RAM upgrade for the Steam Machine.
I purchased a single 16GB stick, even though I normally avoid mixing memory brands or batches. However, with RAM prices being what they are right now, this was the best option I could find, and I wanted to share that it works perfectly fine in my Steam Machine.
OEM — original RAM
SK hynix 16GB DDR5 1x16GB SODIMM
PC5-5600B / DDR5-5600, 1Rx8, CL46
PC5-44800, 1.1V
Supported CAS latencies: 22, 26, 28, 30, 32, 36, 40, 42, 46, 50
Part number: "HMCG78AGBSA095N"
Alternative — replacement RAM
Micron 16GB DDR5 1x16GB SODIMM
PC5-5600B / DDR5-5600, 1Rx8, CL46
PC5-44800, 1.1V
Supported CAS latencies: 22, 26, 28, 30, 32, 36, 40, 42, 46, 50
Part number: "MTC8C1084S1SC56BD1"
Results
The original SK hynix module and the Micron replacement share the same rated capacity, DDR5-5600 data rate, PC5-5600B rating, 1Rx8 organisation and 1.1V operating voltage.
SteamOS detects both modules correctly and reports them running at 5600 MT/s, with one module in each memory channel (A and B).
Both modules are reported to be running at CL46, and the system has been working as expected so far.
Hopefully, this helps anyone looking for a compatible alternative without paying a premium for the original module or like me was about to purchase 2 brand new 16gb modules.
