Does the Stock Market Panic When Right-Wing Governments Lose Power?

On October 26, 2026, Brazil’s benchmark Ibovespa stock index plunged by approximately 17% intraday following Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory in the presidential runoff. While the sell-off had several contributing factors, including the reversal of market bets, concerns about fiscal discipline, public debt, and investor expectations, it raises a broader question about the relationship between political ideology and financial markets.
Do stock markets tend to react negatively when right-wing governments lose power and governments with more progressive, socially oriented, or environmentally conscious agendas take office? Has this pattern occurred historically in other countries, or is Brazil an example of a market correcting positions built around an anticipated election outcome?
One question worth exploring is whether some investors and large corporations perceive policies prioritizing social welfare, environmental protection, and public investment over aggressive capital accumulation as less favorable to their financial interests.
Could Brazil’s market reaction partly reflect a clash between investors’ expectations and the economic priorities of the incoming administration? Or is the sell-off better explained by fiscal risks, uncertainty, and speculative positioning rather than ideology itself?
I would be interested in historical examples and evidence from other countries that could help distinguish between these explanations.
