META Rule clarification: "Sticker bombing" posts

In the future, we will remove any and all posts that just there to show off stickers. Such posts often attract rule breaking behavior that we do not want here, as the stickers are often used to display political leanings that have nothing to do with r/thinkpad.

This is a subreddit about ThinkPads. Not about stickers that you may have on your ThinkPad.

Thinkstagram Picture First ever thinkpad! (E14 Gen 7 Intel)

Still setting it up and all but I like it plenty so far.

Never had one for myself, only as a work laptop and have wanted one for well over a decade by now. Remember seeing the IBM ThinkPads as a kid/teen and already liked ThinkPads back then. Sure, this is not like ThinkPads from that era but I love it all the same.

For those who care:

Core Ultra 5 225H

16GB RAM (2x8GB)

512GB SSD

The 400 nits, 100% sRGB, 120hz, high res, screen upgrade

64Wh battery

The best wifi module available was chosen.

Windows 11 Pro (Is this acceptable around here? XD)

Buying Advice My Latest Thinkpad

Post image
77 Upvotes

This is my first new ThinkPad in 10 years, and yes, my T460P is still kicking. We use it to run our laser cutter.

My new ThinkPad has the following specs:

P14s Gen7 Intel, Thunderbolt 5 dock w/265W power pack, wireless KB & mouse,

Core Ultra 9 386H vPro,

96 GB RAM,

2 TB nVME m.2 OPAL,

RTX Pro 1000 / 8GB GDDR7

3k 14.5" display (500nits).

This will replace my ThinkStation tower (which is why the dock), but also have 'on the go' capabilities. For the desktop, I have 3 ThinkVision 27" QHD monitors.

Since I am retired, we sometimes go on extended trips, but need to bring the ThinkPad along for other 'work' (writing papers and lesson plans, etc). I'm spoiled by having 3 monitors, so for travel, I have a dual panel 14" FHD display setup that I can connect. What carrying case would you consider? Ideally, it would be big enough to hold the ThinkPad, dock, and KB/mouse.

I guess, worst-case scenario, the dock, kb/mouse would travel separately?

Those of you who use your ThinkPad on the road, what say you?

Also, as a side question, I could have sworn that ThinkPad used to have a 3 yr warranty, but this one only has one. Did I 'mis remember', or am I confusing it with the ThinkStation warranty?

I bought this little dude about a year ago, the touchpad got replaced instantly, and i am waiting for the Innolux screen i bought for it, and I’m considering changing the battery with a Kingsener one. So far i’ve spent €120 on it, but with the screen and battery it’ll be 250 ish. Honestly i thought the 4200M would be unbearable to use, but to be honest i love it, and it’s more than enough to get me through 99% of my tasks, but i might still change it to a 4702M just in case.

People around me call it a tank, and that’s kinda the whole point lol.

Thinkstagram Picture Bought a used ThinkPad P14s (Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U, 16GB, 512GB) for &40k. Is it worth it!

Post image

I’m a data engineer from Hyderabad, India, with 2 years of experience. I bought this for learning and personal projects (Python, SQL, Docker, Spark, cloud databricks, certifications).

What I bought
• Lenovo ThinkPad P14s (Gen 3, I believe), bought used from a private seller on Facebook Marketplace( laptop as good as new, warranty ended last month)
• Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U, 16GB soldered RAM, 512GB SSD
• 14" screen, Windows 11
• Price paid: ₹42k inr
• The seller’s battery claim: 70 cycles, full-charge capacity slightly above design capacity (I’ll verify with powercfg /batteryreport and share numbers)

What I compared it with
• ThinkPad T14s Gen 2 (i7-1185G7, 32GB) at ₹35k INR 4 years old 89% battery health.
• ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 (i7-1165G7, 16GB, 1TB) at ₹32k. The seller bought from cashify, and looks sus with battery replaced and the new charger.
• Used M1 Pro MacBook at ₹65-68k (too expensive for me)

My questions
1. Is this a fair price for the specs and age?
2. Is 16GB enough for Docker, WSL2, and local Spark in the coming years?
3. Anything I should check in the first few days (battery, BIOS, warranty, hidden faults)?
4. Any tips for freeing up the memory reserved for integrated graphics?
I also had a missing microphone driver at first and am updating the BIOS and drivers, so tips on AMD ThinkPads are welcome.

Hey everyone,

I have two T580.

Just know have I realized that one of them has a red and blue cables that appear to go into the hinges (?).

The other doesn't have those cables at all, just the place for them.

Does anyone know what these could be?

I'm dying of curiosity. 😂

Thanks!

(Don't worry about the disconnect SSD conection!)

Question / Problem X1 Carbon Gen 14 has loose-feeling bezel around webcam shutter

Post image
4 Upvotes

Received my X1 Carbon Gen 14 two months ago ago and something about the top bezel around the camera feels off. Photo attached.

I'm noticing that the shutter slider sits quite deep in its cutout and is impossible to operate with a fingertip. I need to force a bit with the nail. It lso seems to be not perfectly straight in its slot. Generally speaking, the bezel in that area feels a bit flimsy. It has more play on the right side, and sometimes lightly clicks when pressed.

It's not a big deal, and everything works fine. I just can't tell whether this is a defect worth a warranty claim or simply disappointing build quality. So before I contact the support I wanted to get some opinions. Does that shutter seem normal? Or maybe there's some mild bezel damage?

Thanks!

It failed the memory test and won’t boot to desktop or boot from a thumb drive. Tried replacing the ram but it still fails. Does this mean the soldered memory failed? 🙁

Question / Problem Question about ripped pads

So earlier I saw a post in this sub about someone's Thinkpad with soldered ram failed memtest. Someone said that it happened because if you pickup your laptop with one hand the laptop flexes and the ram pads get ripped. Do I need to worry about that on my t14s gen 1?

Question / Problem Thinkpad p15 gen 1 freezing issues

I've had the above (pretty much maxed out at the time) model for about 2 years, but only been using for about half that time. Yet it freezes without any reason (sometimes just after startup without even touching anything) to the point that not even the blue screen comes up. In some cases, the full ssd shows utilisation while its not even half full, but other times without any substantial activity showing at all. It has an i7 vpro gen10 cpu, 1 tb of ssd storage and rtx3000 quatro gpu with a pro version of windows. On other days it runs 3d CAD work smoothly so I'm completely at a loss of ideas here.

Is there anything i can do, or is it just a piece of junk? Will never buy a lenovo again in my life but i kinda need this to work for now if possible.

I purchased a T430—along with its power adapter—from an e-waste company for 2,500 Turkish Lira (approx. 50 USD) as a hobby project. The device arrived in fully functional condition, equipped with 8 GB of RAM; I have since upgraded the RAM to 16 GB and installed a SATA SSD. In the future, I plan to install Coreboot and Qubes OS.

Hardware Upgrade ThinkPad X390 Yoga Modding (rear Camera + E-Ink display mod)

Post image
3 Upvotes

Here's an idea to mod my ThinkPad X390 Yoga, its just a quick brainstorm but i'd like to hear your Ideas/experiences abt this stuff:
(sorry for the text being german but it hopefully should be understandable enough)

I really like the X390, but what annoys me the most, is the fact there's no front camera which i need to take photos in college like others who use a tablet.

Since there are no unused internal connections, my Idea is to desolder the 9 pins from one USB 3.x off the motherboard, attach a small internal USB-3.0-Hub to the motherboards contact points and place it where the optional SmartCard reader would be below the Battery.

  • One USB port will lead back to the lifted pins on the port to restore its functionality
  • The other will connect to a small USB webcam, that gets placed into the back of the display assembly. A small switch, that i could place in the gap op the card reader slot will act as a privacy shutter.
  • I would also get a 3rd port for future expansions like a small E-Ink display on an ESP-32 that can show temps or something similair.

Im already aware of the cables having to be the same lenght and the Data-leads being shielded, but I would like to hear your guys ideas/experiences.

Question / Problem Thinkpad T14S Gen 3 not booting after power button was blinking

A few days ago, my thinkpad would have its power button blink repeatedly whenever I plugged in the charger. Today, it got so bad that when I plugged in the charger, the power button kept blinking along with an orange light right next to the charger port and the red dot on the back of the screen/monitor. The trackpad went completely unresponsive when plugged in too.

I unplugged the battery and cmos and held the power button for 30 sec, but I wasn't thinking and forgot to unplug the charger cord while I did that. Almost all the help threads online said to unplug the charger cord while doing that. Now, after I plugged the battery and cmos back in and put the shell back on, the thinkpad won't even boot at all. When I plug in the charger, the red dot on the back of the screen/monitor won't glow either. Did I fuck this up real bad? I currently have the thinkpad plugged and I'll leave it there for a few hours. Not sure how to troubleshoot from here. My last resort is replacing the cmos battery. I really don't want this laptop to die on me.

Buying Advice Need advice on upgrading from my old thinkpad machine

I'm currently studying in software engineering. Currently working on a T480 i5 gen 8 for years now in study. It's a great machine but it is showing its age very quickly, especially when i'm working on heavy programming workloads.

I found several machines that seem like a good candidate to replace it. From a trusted refurbisher which I bought my T480 years ago.

Budget is:

roughly $600 or less

Candidates (Planning to get them to provide 16GB ram and 512GB SSD on all these, below only shows the model and its processor i found):

T15 gen 2:

  • Core i5-1135G7
  • For $587
  • Mind if I ask, does this T15 i5 variant also include nvidia mx450 dGPU by default or is it just an option?

T14 gen 3:

  • Core i5-1235U
  • For $562

T14s gen 2:

  • Core i5-1135G7 For $501

T14 gen 2:

  • Core i5-1135G7 For $501

Use Case:

  • Windows 11 pro (need to use default Safe exam browser config, which is Mac, IOS, or Windows compatible only)
  • Heavy programming workloads and multi tasking (running android virtual devices and other virtual machines)
  • Will be running some "low-end" multimedia work (some video and audio editing here and there, small rendering on blender, etc.)
  • Using it in a very humid place, without AC most of the time (Southeast Asia). I need a machine with 'alright' thermals and cooling, I already have a laptop table fan.
  • Entertainment? Just some youtube and light gaming (Fallout 1, Openttd, Terraria, etc.).
  • Planning to make it my work machine for ~3-5 years minimum.

Are there any other options that you can recommend for my current use case and budget? Thanks :)
