Hot take(?): Being 2nd many times in a row is more impressive than being 1st

Yes, Machine is the best team in men's ultimate frisbee. To continually lose in finals is more impressive than occasionally being 1st. Machine is in fact #1.

I made a free ultimate frisbee game you can play in your browser (phone too). It’s in beta and I’d love feedback from people who actually play

Hey r/ultimate! I’ve been making UltiMax, a free pixel-art ultimate game, and it’s now in open beta. Would love for people who actually play to try it.

Play: https://ultimax-frisbee.vercel.app (free, no download, no ads; on a phone, turn it sideways)

What you can do:

  • Play 7v7 or 3v3 and throw it yourself: aim and curve flicks, backhands, hammers and full-field hucks
  • Lay out, sky people, break the mark, beat the stall count
  • Go up against a team AI that runs a stack, cuts and plays D
  • Work through a campaign of superstar teams, then try to survive MASTER mode
  • Upgrade your player from rookie to UltiMax with moves and specialties
  • Play online with your friends (2-8 players)
  • Save your best plays and export them as a highlight reel

It’s a beta, so expect a few rough edges, and updates may sometimes affect saved progress.

Feedback wanted: Does the throwing feel right? Does the AI play like real ultimate? What’s missing?
Report bugs or ideas here: https://forms.gle/LxtVR3FxQ8qtudYk9 (or drop a comment)

Thanks for checking it out!

Language differences in US vs Europe

I'm going to be playing a tournament in Europe soon and I'm curious if there are any notable differences in field language between Europe and the US that I should be aware of?
I'm not talking about rule differences, more so just want to be sure that I can communicate with my teammates effectively.

Terms I'm specifically thinking about are "roll", "wheel cut", "popper/wing", "inside/around", "force in/out", etc. I assume most of these are generally the same, but I'm sure there are also some alternatives to these since the US also has variation in these terms.

Spoiler Machine v Ring of Fire - Men’s Final

What a tournament for Ring! Was hoping for a Quarters or Semi appearance but they went ahead and cashed in the whole thing.
From dime hucks and goal-line D, to fearless resets and clean possessions, Ring deserves the 2026 chip! Happy for those guys⚡️

Fury v Brute Semis. Brute person signaled between them and the receiver. Disc sent back.

Anyone know why #73 on Brute Squad received a yellow card?

Nothing happened on screen that would've warranted it. And the stream cuts as she's walking off by herself into empty space, clapping her hands in a bit of frustration. Maybe language?

Middle School Ultimate Spirit Circles - How to Improve??

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello! I coach middle school Ultimate frisbee for the Washington DC area frisbee club association. We usually have about 60 kiddos out every Sunday for drills and scrimmages. After each scrimmage, it is a long tradition to have a spirit circle. I'm sure most of you are very familiar with the spirit circle experience.

This past Sunday, after a scrimmage, our two teams sat down in a circle (about 20 of us all together) and one person started the chain by calling out another kid and saying something they did well. This works fine and easy in the beginning, but there are always those kids who aren't quite as coordinated or just started learning that get called on in the very end and no one has much good to say about, we as coaches then usually jump in to interrupt the awkwardness with something to say and then everyone quickly says - Okay that's it. Thanks. Bye! The end is always the worst.

My question for this community is - how can we make spirit circles better?

I see two distinct problems:

  1. Everyone knows who the best players are. It is easy to call their names and give them praise. Those players know they will called and prepare for it, usually with some funny or leader like cool quip to say, and then they usually know who they are going to call on next because they go first and have a wide pool to choose from.

  2. The last kids are usually shy, maybe slightly intimated, and they have to face going last while whoever did pick them struggles with something nice to say, which usually comes out something like "you caught the disc" or "you ran" and everyone else has a slight giggle. Then, that kid who is probably shy and maybe embarrassed has to find the next to last kid to call on, and stumble through finding something nice to say about their play when there isn't much at all. It's not a fun thing to be a part of during those last moments.

I love the idea of spirit circles, however the execution should be vastly improved, especially at the middle school, intermediate level where these feelings might cause deep rooted trauma.

If you have any ideas, I am all ears and I will pass them along to other coaches here in DC.

The only idea I have had myself is maybe the coaches should just take over the circles and say something positive about each kid, not from best to worst, but just going around the circle. Has anyone tried that?

Thanks for listening and supporting Middle School Ultimate!

Why disc is returned?

Why was this disc returned? Something happened in the stack, idk if a pick or something, then a pass was made that was out of bounds, after discussion disc is returned to the thrower? Maybe is some usa ultimate rules im not aware of, something similar happened before universe point, is this okay with the rules?
To me it doesnt make sense why the disc goes back

Throwing practice app development

I built a free throwing practice app and want honest feedback from this sub. You draw a target on a real spot (net, tree, a friend), say "make" or "miss" out loud, and get a 0 to 100 score that rewards volume and distance. It has team boards and Strava upload. What would make you actually use it for solo reps?

Pickup rules discussion...

So at pickup today an offensive player jumped off the foot of the defender on the side of the throw. Receiver prevents the defender from jumping and is able to make the reception. Defender calls foul for the inhibitions of some Newtons forced on the planted foot and no contest response from the offensive player... What happens to the disc? Is it a turn or does it go back to the original thrower?

New to the game

Heya, I'm a 24M who, about 2 months ago, started going to Ultimate practices at a local club in a country where Ultimate isn't that well known/played. I mostly started playing to get some sport and stay active. I'm really enjoying the game. On the last months I tried to get the basics of the basics done, understanding the basic dynamics and mechanics, as well as the game language.
I believe that the two most fun things you can do in a hobby are enjoying doing it as well as looking at your improvement. I've been getting some praise for my flick, which already makes me happy to see an improvement.
Currently I'm trying to give myself a "things to focus plan" as in things I wanna try to improve/learn in the next months (let's say short term a plan for 3 months and medium term plan for 6/12 months) with small things that I'll help me get better, for example : improving the usage of the pivot foot, learning how to hammer, etc etc.
So I'll kindly ask anyone who stumbles on this post to drop down their 3/5 main tips for an absolute beginner.
And if you have any youtube channels to recommend for me to learn stuff, especially the tactical part of the game, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you all in advance. :)
