Hot take(?): Being 2nd many times in a row is more impressive than being 1st

Yes, Machine is the best team in men's ultimate frisbee. To continually lose in finals is more impressive than occasionally being 1st. Machine is in fact #1.

I made a free ultimate frisbee game you can play in your browser (phone too). It’s in beta and I’d love feedback from people who actually play

Hey r/ultimate! I’ve been making UltiMax, a free pixel-art ultimate game, and it’s now in open beta. Would love for people who actually play to try it.

Play: https://ultimax-frisbee.vercel.app (free, no download, no ads; on a phone, turn it sideways)

What you can do:

  • Play 7v7 or 3v3 and throw it yourself: aim and curve flicks, backhands, hammers and full-field hucks
  • Lay out, sky people, break the mark, beat the stall count
  • Go up against a team AI that runs a stack, cuts and plays D
  • Work through a campaign of superstar teams, then try to survive MASTER mode
  • Upgrade your player from rookie to UltiMax with moves and specialties
  • Play online with your friends (2-8 players)
  • Save your best plays and export them as a highlight reel

It’s a beta, so expect a few rough edges, and updates may sometimes affect saved progress.

Feedback wanted: Does the throwing feel right? Does the AI play like real ultimate? What’s missing?

Language differences in US vs Europe

I'm going to be playing a tournament in Europe soon and I'm curious if there are any notable differences in field language between Europe and the US that I should be aware of?
I'm not talking about rule differences, more so just want to be sure that I can communicate with my teammates effectively.

Terms I'm specifically thinking about are "roll", "wheel cut", "popper/wing", "inside/around", "force in/out", etc. I assume most of these are generally the same, but I'm sure there are also some alternatives to these since the US also has variation in these terms.

Middle School Ultimate Spirit Circles - How to Improve??

Post image

Hello! I coach middle school Ultimate frisbee for the Washington DC area frisbee club association. We usually have about 60 kiddos out every Sunday for drills and scrimmages. After each scrimmage, it is a long tradition to have a spirit circle. I'm sure most of you are very familiar with the spirit circle experience.

This past Sunday, after a scrimmage, our two teams sat down in a circle (about 20 of us all together) and one person started the chain by calling out another kid and saying something they did well. This works fine and easy in the beginning, but there are always those kids who aren't quite as coordinated or just started learning that get called on in the very end and no one has much good to say about, we as coaches then usually jump in to interrupt the awkwardness with something to say and then everyone quickly says - Okay that's it. Thanks. Bye! The end is always the worst.

My question for this community is - how can we make spirit circles better?

I see two distinct problems:

  1. Everyone knows who the best players are. It is easy to call their names and give them praise. Those players know they will called and prepare for it, usually with some funny or leader like cool quip to say, and then they usually know who they are going to call on next because they go first and have a wide pool to choose from.

  2. The last kids are usually shy, maybe slightly intimated, and they have to face going last while whoever did pick them struggles with something nice to say, which usually comes out something like "you caught the disc" or "you ran" and everyone else has a slight giggle. Then, that kid who is probably shy and maybe embarrassed has to find the next to last kid to call on, and stumble through finding something nice to say about their play when there isn't much at all. It's not a fun thing to be a part of during those last moments.

I love the idea of spirit circles, however the execution should be vastly improved, especially at the middle school, intermediate level where these feelings might cause deep rooted trauma.

If you have any ideas, I am all ears and I will pass them along to other coaches here in DC.

The only idea I have had myself is maybe the coaches should just take over the circles and say something positive about each kid, not from best to worst, but just going around the circle. Has anyone tried that?

Thanks for listening and supporting Middle School Ultimate!
