Note From r/VictoriaBC Mods | Election Season 2026 is Upon Us!

Hello everyone, happy double election season 2026!

With both municipal & provincial elections approaching in under a month, this sub will be (and already is) inundated with political content. Please review the following regarding political content in the sub during election season.

  • Be civil & decent to each other, even when in disagreement. Political season is a great time to practice the virtue of disagreeing without being disagreeable. In other words, to respond to an argument rather than attacking someone's character. We will remove content and give out bans when appropriate to keep the discussion civil and constructive.
  • Political posts should be linked to an official, legitimate news outlet or publication. Please avoid self-made political posts, social-media screenshots, rants/raves, etc. There is no lack of political news content, and we'd like to keep discussion based around legitimate coverage to help mitigate the spread of misinformation, and to minimize redundancy.
  • Mind the municipal & provincial distinction re: relevancy to Victoria. We encourage folks to post provincial political content over at r/BritishColumbia and to focus on municipal issues here at r/VictoriaBC. As local & provincial politics do overlap, some provincial content may be appropriate this sub, but in general please keep political content focused on Victoria & region.
  • Posts that break the 'No Editorialized Headlines' rule will be removed regardless of the content or engagement prior to removal. When posting an article, the post title should match the article's headline exactly. Any editorialization, whether intentional or not, will result in the removal of that post.
  • Help us out by reporting rule-breaking content. If you think a post or comment breaks the rules, please report it so we can review the content. Keeping in mind the next rule...
  • Please don't abuse the report function. Disagreement is not a reportable offence - please utilize the downvote button if you disagree with a post or comment. Misusing the report feature breaks Reddit-wide rules, and we report all users who abuse the report function which can lead to site-wide restrictions to one's Reddit account. Thank you for not misusing the report function, we appreciate it.
  • Avoid low-effort posts & comments. We've heard it all before. Save those low-effort one liners for Thanksgiving dinner or Twitter. We'll remove low-effort content in our efforts to maintain civil discourse.
  • No AI-generated content. Any post or comment suspected of being generated by AI will be removed.

The sub's safety & crowd-control features have also been turned up to help filter out content from bots, newer accounts, trolls, brigaders, etc. If you have content removed that you think shouldn't have been, please message the mods and we will review it when we can.

Thanks everyone!

It's extremely upsetting to see someone walk up my front path and snap an entire branch off of one of my dahlia plants. The audacity.

If you know this person, please tell them to do better.

Question How was Slow Burn Dating?

I was interested in attending the Slow Burn Dating event at the Royal BC Museum last week but wasn't able to make it.

For those who went, how was it? Was it well organized? What kinds of activities were there? Was attendance fairly balanced between men and women?

I'm also curious about the age range, whether most people attended solo or with friends, and whether you'd go again in the future.

Politics Some perspective for those who feel wronged by the election

Progressive ideas are great. I've been a progressive voter my entire life and will continue to be. I'm upset that the NDP lost as well.

But our democracy demands compromise and finding common ground with people that hold different values. It is VERY apparent, based on the endless stream of threads in this sub, that many in Victoria feel that something that was theirs has been taken from them. You're not allowed to be offended by losing something that never belonged to you. Politics isn't won and lost. It's a conversation, not a contest.

If you woke up this morning acting like the government of BC somehow became your enemy overnight, it's time for some serious self-reflection on how lucky we are to live here and have a role in choosing our own government.

Opinion How on earth is there no bus route going down island after 9:30 in the morning??

Post image

Island bus requires booking a day in advance, so I guess I'm just stuck up here for another day. If we aren't going to get a train, we at least need to get reliable bus route, this is absurd.

Controversy The burning of Traveller's Inn and some questions...

How did it pass fire inspections? Were there working sprinklers? And since it is now demolished so soon after, I'm assuming there will still be an investigation as to cause. Firefighters took a defensive position, understandable, but what about news reports of missing person?

Robin Kimpton is in Van now. Will he be investigated? I hope. I've met him, and he is an ornery man with little care for others. He was renting suites illegally. Was the city aware of this? And no, this was never a supportive housing site. Just a vacant hotel owned and run by a slum lord.

After telling CTV that “The challenge in responding to these accusations is that there are also many fake posts attributed to me, generated by people looking to attack me” Wendy Bowkett has now deleted her X account, effectively scrubbing the evidence.

Snapshots from the now deleted account can be found here:

(the perma.cc links are true snapshots that can't be modified)

Edit: I’m not the creator of the petition. Just spreading awareness.

No matter how B.C. or Canada votes, Victoria remains a place where progressive values run deep

You keep choosing a world where people deserve dignity, regardless of who they love, where they were born, what they believe, or how they identify.

Where marginalized communities deserve safety, belonging, and the freedom to exist without having to defend their humanity.

There is something profoundly comforting about living in a city that so often refuses to abandon its values, even when the rest of the political map changes colour.

Thank you for this bubble, Victoria. I’m so proud to call you home. 🧡💚

Question Time zone problems upcoming?

Hey folks- I just tried to make an appointment for Nov 7th, after we were supposed to move to StandardTime, and the calendar (the one with Rogers/Shw webmail) wouldn't let me!! It wants me to reset my time zone to something it recognizes, as the warning says "we are unable to identify the time zone in your area. Please choose one from the list...."

Anybody else run into this and how did it work for you?

BTW- I wonder what Microsoft has in store for the million or so Windows PCs affected by this decision.

Heard a noise that I recognized but couldn't identify. So I started whistling. It was a baby raccoon.
