Travel Experience/Du lịch Someone i know got drged and sa'd in ho chin minh yesterday.

She is currently admitted to a hospital receiving medical care, and a toxicology report.

We are trying to figure out the best course of action from the legal side, particularly while she is still hospitalized and in the early window following the assault.

If anyone has experience, legal knowledge, or advice regarding how criminal reporting works for foreign victims in Vietnam, we would greatly appreciate your input on:

Hospital & Forensic Evidence: What specific medical/forensic reports or toxicology tests (for drug screening) should we request from the hospital right now to ensure evidence is properly documented for a police investigation?

Does anyone know any English speaking lawyers who have specialized in cases like this?

Leaving the Country: If she decides to return home for recovery, does filing a formal criminal report prevent her from leaving Vietnam, or can a legal representative handle the case on her behalf once initiated?

Any advice on navigating local law enforcement, recommended legal resources/firms, or practical steps to preserve evidence while she is still in the hospital would mean a lot to us.

As of now we are in the process of contacting her home countries consulate, and ensuring she receives medical care. Later today we will be filing a police report once she is out of the hospital.

I am not with her, she is alone in Vietnam currently.

Thank you in advance.

Discussion/Thảo luận Why do European tourists think they are better than other tourists

Why do European tourists think they are better than other tourists when they go to Asian countries.

I noticed that these people are often the worst kinds of people, they are mostly rejected in their own country so they want to feel good by going to Asian countries and then feel superior than everyone around them.

Discussion/Thảo luận Vietnam to Cambodia by land border

Hey! I’m planning a Vietnam + Cambodia trip for March and wanted to check with people who’ve actually done this.

I’m an Indian passport holder and plan to get the regular tourist e-visas for both countries. I was hoping to travel between Vietnam and Cambodia by bus, but I spoke to an agent and they said they don’t recommend crossing by land.

Has anyone here done this recently using tourist e-visas? Was the Moc Bai–Bavet crossing straightforward, or did you face any issues?

Discussion/Thảo luận How is travel in Vietnam so affordable?

I have traveled Vietnam from South to North in cycle and hence, passed through country side. What I found that everything in Vietnam is surprisingly economical.

  1. Hotel stay is often $10 per night and mostly within $20 except in big cities such as Hanoi/HCM.

Even in provincial capital, it is super cheap.

  1. Food is also impossibly priced. A fried rice often costs less than a dollar.

  2. Coffee in an excellent place (comparable to Star Bucks) is about 2-3 dollars.

My question is how the business is surviving with this price? It will fold in any other place on earth.

Are the businesses in tourism industry making money?

Edits / Clarifications

  1. I am an Indian and understand the cost of labour in such countries as mine. With the similar labour cost as that of Vietnam, similar hotels in India will cost at least $40 and coffee will be $3-$5

  2. I understand that there are many luxury/expensive hotels in Vietnam and you can spend tons of money there or in other activities. I am not claiming that every place in Vietnam is inexpensive.

    1. My interest is to know the unit economics of these establishments, which can offer coffee for a dollar. In typical hospitality industry, man power cost is about 1/3rd of the total cost. Significant cost is real estate, consumables and wastage.

If the logic is that real estate is cheap compared to similar countries such as India, then it will make sense. I would like someone who has worked in Vietnam tourism industry or has understanding / knowledge how they are able to keep the prices so low and still able to make profits.

Travel Experience/Du lịch 6 days in Hue December suggestions?

Husband and I love Vietnam. I’m Korean but feel more love and affection to this country! We’re there every December for many years - Phu Quoc, HCMC, Hanoi, Hoi An, Ha Giang- but never been to Hue. How should I organize 6 days there? Any favorite spots not on top 10 lists? We will need to get a motorcycle- anyone know a good place to rent one south side of Truong Tien bridge?

Travel Experience/Du lịch Where to next?

I may be traveling for two weeks in May with a group of undergrad students on a study abroad experience. We will start in Hanoi, travel to to several unesco sites and eventually end up in Ho Chi Min City. At that point, I’ll be ready for a vacation away from my students. I am considering flying to Chang Mai, as I haven’t been there before. I’ve been to Bangkok many times, so it would be nice to see more of Thailand. I’m also open to exploring more of Vietnam, or even Laos or Cambodia.

Any recommendations for where you would travel to next from Ho Chi Minh City? I’m more interested in culture, visiting temples, exploring parks, and then eating well from the street and experiencing nightlife (especially live music). I appreciate any suggestions people share. Thanks.

Travel Experience/Du lịch 11 day travel route recommendations

My gf and I will be arriving in Hanoi this evening and have a flight out of Ho Chi Minh City in 12 days time and are looking for recommendations for our route.

So far we have 2 nights planned in Hanoi followed by 3 nights in Nihn Bihn (though this can be rebooked free of charge). We are trying to plan the rest of our route but are a bit conflicted regarding the weather at this time of year and how to make the most of the country.

Our aims for the trip are to explore the culture and nature as much as possible, as well as have some time for relaxation. As such, in Hanoi we plan to experience the city, perhaps take a cooking class, and just wander around. In Nihm Binh we want to rent motorbikes and explore, take a boat trip, and just chill out about.

The question is where else we should go? We‘ve been looking at Da Nang / Hue / Hà Nội but weather forecast is less encouraging. Does it make sense to avoid the centre with the rainy season?

We liked the look of Da Lat (I’d like to do the Mario kart downhill karting) and also considered going to Phu Quoc for a few days for some snorkelling and beaches. We were also not initially planning to go to Ha Long bay / Cat Ba, but this could be another alternative. Would it make sense to skip the central regions and either head south to Da Lat then Phu Quoc, or remain longer in the north and head to the coast?

We probably only plan to spend 1 night in Ho Chi Minh City and see the war museum / explore a bit before returning home.

Any feedback and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Culture/Văn hóa My father in law only speaks VNese and I only speak English. I built a two-phone, live translation app so we could hang out w/ out needing my wife to translate.

My wife's dad and I have always gotten along great. We really enjoy hanging out and drinking beer together. For years, if my wife wasn't around, our conversations were more limited to smiles, pointing, and mot hai ba yo-ing.

Eventually AI voice models got good enough to translate. We'd open ChatGPT, I'd tell it to translate everything it heard in both directions, and we'd slide the phone back and forth across the table. It sort of worked. It also had problems:

  • Passing one phone back and forth all night gets old
  • The app believes you're done talking the moment you pause. He'd stop to think mid-sentence, it would start translating, and he'd keep going and talk over it
  • The model would forget its role. I had to re-explain "you are a translator" a couple of times every session

So I built a two-phone, live translation version with push-to-talk buttons. The vid is us using it. We each open it on our own phones. We can pair our session at the start, then it's pretty straightforward. I hold my button and speak english, and vnese plays out of his phone. He holds his button and speaks vnese, and english plays out of mine. Both screens show a running transcript in both languages, so when a translation comes out wrong we can see it and laugh instead of nodding along confused.

Vietnamese to English was noticeably worse than English to Vietnamese for the first month, and I nearly gave up on it. But I found a better model, then a few months ago we had our first full hour-long conversation with no one in the middle at a cool beer bar in Tan Phu. I learned about his time in the military during the war with Cambodia, and how he met my mother-in-law. Years of sitting across from him and I'd never heard either story.

It's been great.

Discussion/Thảo luận Spending a month in Sa Pa. Anyone up for exploring, grabbing drinks, or making some new friends? (Married couple)

Hey everyone! My wife and I are spending the next month in Sa Pa after spending a month in Da Nang and another in Phu Quoc. We’ve absolutely loved our time in Vietnam so far!

My wife is a happy introvert, but I’m definitely the more social one. So I figured I’d post here and see if anyone, locals or fellow travelers, would be interested in meeting up!

A little about us: We’re both in our 30s. I’m American and work remotely for a U.S. startup, and my wife is Ukrainian. She speaks Ukrainian, Russian, and English. I speak English and about three months’ worth of very questionable Vietnamese 😂 We’re both pretty easygoing, laid-back people who just enjoy exploring, experiencing new things, and having a good time.

We’ve rented a motorbike and love getting out and exploring, especially nature, random backroads, little villages, and places you probably wouldn’t find on a typical tourist itinerary. I’m also a pretty adventurous eater and love finding little local spots and trying whatever they’re serving. My wife is slightly less adventurous with food, but she’s usually happy to come along for the ride!
We’re also up for the usual tourist attractions (Fansipan, glass bridge, etc.), grabbing some food, having a few drinks, finding a lively bar or club, or just hanging out. Really, we’re not picky!

And don’t feel like it’s a package deal with both of us, either. She’s perfectly happy doing her own thing while I go out and socialize. 😂

Just to be clear, we’re not looking for paid tours or guides. We’d genuinely love to make some friends and connections while we’re here, whether you’re local, an expat, or just passing through.

No expectations or elaborate plans necessary. If anyone wants to grab a beer, explore somewhere, or just hang out, shoot me a message! 🍻

Travel Experience/Du lịch Recommendations for a 1-month+ stay in South Vietnam? (Remote worker)

Hi everyone,
I’m planning to arrive in Ho Chi Minh City in about 2 weeks, and I’m looking for a place in the South to settle down for a month or longer.
I work remotely and have frequent online meetings with clients, so a fast and stable internet connection is an absolute must.
I’m specifically looking at the South for the warm weather and to avoid the heavy rains currently hitting the Central regions. I’d love a place near the sea/water, but I’m totally open to inland options if they have a good vibe and good Wi-Fi.

So far, I’ve found Vung Tau as a potential option, but I’d love to hear your recommendations. The city/town doesn't have to be super close to HCMC!

Any ideas or tips would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Travel Experience/Du lịch Trip reflection: People of Vietnam

Just wrapped up a two week trip to Vietnam with a friend, marking our first visit to Southeast Asia in general and thought it might be worth sharing an update here!

We spent a couple days in each of Saigon, Hoi An, Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay, and of course while the nature, scenery, culture and food were some of the most memorable out of all the countries I have visited, my favourite part of the trip by far was the interactions with people. Other foreigners included, but especially the interactions with Vietnamese people.

Not to get too sentimental, but especially given the history of your country and the hardship that people have gone through and continue to go through, the Vietnamese are genuinely some of the most cheerful and welcoming people I have had the pleasure of interacting with. This could range from random chats with people on the street, to drunk men at bars or the people working at cafes or restaurants. Everyone seems incredibly hard working, in many cases waking up at ungodly hours to get work done before the heat of the day and finishing late in the evening, but most importantly for those in customer service jobs, taking a lot of pride in making guests feel comfortable.

The biggest thing for me as a black African is that not once did I face any racism whatsoever during the whole trip, which unfortunately I can't say for many of the other countries that I have visited. Many people, especially children were naturally curious about my origins and I had many fun interactions about this.

I will most certainly be coming back, and want to thank the Vietnamese for having such a welcoming attitude.

Travel Experience/Du lịch Vietjet Air Travel Credit – Has Anyone Managed to Transfer It or Change the Passenger Name

Hi everyone,

I have a Vietjet Air travel credit worth 368.26, valid until August 2027. Unfortunately, the credit is restricted to the original passenger.

I'm trying to find out whether anyone has successfully found a way to use their credit for someone else.

A few questions:

  1. Has anyone successfully transferred Vietjet travel credit to another person, such as a family member?

  2. If I use the credit to book a Business Class ticket, can I then pay a fee to change the passenger name?

  3. Has anyone managed to convert their travel credit into a cash refund?

  4. Has Vietjet ever made exceptions to these rules, especially if you contacted customer service?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has personally dealt with this, particularly in 2025 or 2026.

Thanks in advance!
