Ai is going to keep us employed for a long time

Holy guacamole, AI is dumb. I have a whole bunch of non-accountants running stuff through AI trying to tell me how to do accounting. And it is so wrong.

I don’t think people get, it’s way more than just debts and credits. There is judgment calls, there’s what you can support, there’s processes that are dependencies. There’s corporate structure stuff and a lot of that exterior knowledge that isn’t really described when people present something on face value. And that’s where we come in, cause we know like, hey, you gotta look for these other things or hey, you gotta ask more questions and just say what can we capitalize .

And let me be clear, AI with accruals and reconciliations, I’m pretty thankful for that help, but in reality, if you got your processes clean, it’s not that big of a lift

Career POV: You're an accountant but what do you fantasize about doing instead?

I'll go first. I ended up in accounting (non CPA) because I struggled with that subject the most in grad school and I'm a glutton for punishment. I went back to grad school later in life and somehow ended up with an entry level position in accounting when I finished, and 6 years later I am still doing it. Do I love it? No. Do I even like it? Also no. I wanted to leave (I work in CAS) but found a remote job doing it and figured it would be crazy to turn it down. But if I scroll on Tik Tok sometimes and I would love to be an influencer. Yes, crazy I know. I have a theory that no one really "likes" accounting and we would all do something else if we figure out how. So what do you really want to do?

What is life

I hate this shit so much. I just wanna hunt, eat meat, and have sex. Why tf was I born in this timeline where I gotta stare at screens and go on mf teams all day. I don’t wanna stare at a screen for 8 hours and sitting down all day doing boring ass shit anymore. I’d rather be a hunter gatherer and be free in nature. The native Americans had this shit down to a science. Fuck Columbus

Financial controller doesn’t know how to use our ERP, and refuses to learn.

I’m a senior accountant working for the regional subsidiary of a group with revenues ~500m. My region contributes around 100m of that.

We got a new controller just before Christmas, and had apparently never used Oracle even though he’s been in accounting for 20 years. No problem with that, but he completely refuses to learn. He’s been here a year but doesn’t know how to run a TB or transaction listing, just completely reliant on others to run all of his reports.

The audit team sent a request while I was on leave, and it went unanswered for more than a week because he “wasn’t sure how to run the information they wanted”. Literally all they wanted was a transaction listing for a specific account, but he didn’t think to even google it. I know this guy is making absolute bank, and it’s baffling to me how he’s made it this far.

E: I feel a lot of responses are over-estimating how high up this guy is in the company. He manages 3 people (me & 2 others in a different country), none of whom have any management responsibility, and the hierarchy is him -> local FD -> Group FD -> Group CFO. We’re not talking about the no.2 guy in finance who’s meant to be driving strategy, his remit is very much financial control and compliance.

Discussion Company is doing a return to office one day a week for those who live an hour within any of our offices, but those who live over an hour get to stay 100% fully remote. Anyone else have something similar happen and what did you do?

When I go into my local office once a week, I’ll have to be on Teams calls all day long given that every person from my team lives in a different state than I do.

It just so happens that everyone else from my team also happens to get to stay 100% fully remote since they all don’t live anywhere near an office.

Therefore, I’ll be the only one from my entire team who has to go into an office (while everyone else stays 100% fully remote on my team).

Anyone else have something similar happen and what did you do?

For my salaried California peeps

If you guys are salaried in California your employer is legally required to pay you a minimum of about 70k. Google it. My HR person didn’t know their ass from their elbow, surprise surprise, and I got a nice pay bump because of it.

Discussion Why are the Aussie Big 4 always up to crazy shenanigans

I'm not saying that the Big 4 in the US, EU, Asia, SA, etc. don't get into hijinks. But I feel like the Aussies are always stealing the show. What is it about Straya that leads to so many high profile accounting scandals? Is it because it was quite literally colonized by criminals, or on the contrary, do they have enough whistleblowers and competent regulators to catch this activity? Is it somewhere in between? Really curious for some insight into the matter from the boys and girls down unda.

is it normal to get wiped by intermediate accounting

I just took my first midterm for Intermediate Accounting 1, which is relatively just harder content than Foundations Accounting (not first year accounting, its like slightly easier intermediate) which I did really well in. Walked out of the exam feeling super bad about it and checked to see what I thought I did right, to see I clearly missed the mark on it.

It felt so much harder by a landslide than foundations accounting which I struggled with at first, but I was wondering if it is normal to feel completely knocked over by intermediate accounting (at a Canadian university). Thank you!!

For those who recently graduated from college, what is your starting salary?

I’ve been seeing a lot of entry-level job postings offering around $40k–$55k, and I’m curious if that’s actually the norm for recent graduates.

Just trying to get a realistic idea of what other recent grads are making!

Advice How to discuss reason for termination from previous employer?

I got fired from my public accounting job for declining performance due to my burnout, and Im looking for the best way to discuss this that I can get away with while interviewing for industry roles so that I don’t come off as a slacker.

I’ve just been telling employers that they lay off people frequently throughout the year, as they do, and I happened to be included this time. I kept it as vague as I could, and in an interview feedback it was mentioned that I was not entirely clear about my departure.

Any better ways to discuss this? Can I potentially get away with saying I quit?

Blow the Whistle?

This is my second encounter with some major unethical, possibly illegal, activity at the insurance broker I work for.

I have a major director in the company who writes policies at a higher commission rate for an insurance company that he created for his son. He is about to retire in a few months, and I am livid. His family makes hundreds of thousands a year off this agency - I know because I generate the commission checks.

Anyone more familiar with insurance activities in the state of CO and could guide me before I go to the authorities with what I’ve found?

Accountants in College

Why aren’t more of you getting Data Analytics/MIS degrees to pair with your accounting degree? I graduated nearly 10 years ago in the first class of my university’s Data Analytics program and it has done way more for me than accounting would have done alone. Since graduating, I’ve seen a single auditor at PwC and Zero applicants have both majors.

If you understand even the basics of database architecture, granularity, and SQL you have no idea how dangerous that is now paired with an accounting background.

Software engineerings scope is shrinking. They will no longer build, just maintain and make efficient. Accountants and other subject matter experts of a process will be the builders, and they’ll hand off the working prototype to the Software Engineer.

You want to be the builders, not the guy doing the manual repetitive task that the builder will automate with Software.

Can someone who works in Big 4 as a Senior associate or higher tell me what it’s really like?

I have 4 years experience in tax/payroll/bookkeeping at my current firm. It’s a very small firm so I do a bit of everything with my main focuses being bookkeeping and all things tax. I’ve realized I’ll never make what I want to make at this firm and I am thinking of making a change. I’ve been eyeing big 4 as a senior associate in tax, either corporate tax or salt. Can someone give me a realistic idea of what the workload/ day would be like? At my current firm I work no more than 40 hours and once I have my cpa it will be closer to 50-55 hours a week in busy season. So I’m not against working more I just want an idea before I make a big change.

BDO vs. PwC vs. Forvis Mazars — Atlanta audit internship

I’m a college student deciding between summer audit internship opportunities at BDO, PwC, and Forvis Mazars in Atlanta, and I’d love to hear from anyone who has experience with these firms, especially their Atlanta offices!!!

I’m particularly interested in:
Office culture and the people you’d be working with
Work-life balance during busy season
Training and how much interns actually learn
Reputation and future career opportunities
Any differences between the Atlanta offices specifically
If you’ve interned or worked at any of these firms, which would you recommend and why? I’d especially appreciate honest feedback beyond just firm rankings or name recognition. Thanks! For reference, I’ve loved everyone I’ve met at all three firms and am having a hard time deciding.

Did I make a mistake going back to school for accounting?

I’ve been in AR for 5 years. Decided to go back to school to get my masters in accounting because my bachelors was in a different field. 75 applications and 2 interviews, and nothing for a staff accountant job. Talked to 3 recruiters. They all seemed eager to help and then completely ghosted me. First interview I had I got to the final round then was rejected. Another interview I had a phone screen and never heard back.

The job market is an absolute joke. I’m thankful to be employed but I didn’t go back to school to be in AR the rest of my life. Tried moving up at my current company and have to deal with workplace politics and favoritism bullsh*t.

Did I make a mistake? Then we hear about Microsoft layoffs. The whole point of me returning to school was to be able to get better higher paying jobs. I’ve given up on the job search already and my motivation is at an all time low. I’m also not feeling challenged in my current role anymore and I’m just over it.

Now what?

Career DAE Regret Choosing Accounting?

Because I sure do.

Like many others I went into this line of work because I wanted stability and an okay wage.

Well, this field is not stable. Offshoring and AI are massively eroding this field. Anyone who does not think AI will destroy this line of work has their head in their sand. Not only that, but perfection is the bare minimum needed in this line of work. That is because managers can and will fire you at a moment's notice if you are not perfect.

There is also no money to be made either. I have been trying for five years now and still have not made more than 50k a year in any accounting job that I have had.

And with AI advancing at a rapid rate, there seems to be no point anymore.

If I had to do this all over again, I would have gone into healthcare. Does anyone else regret choosing accounting?

Advice Does it make sense for me to become a CPA?

I’m a 26M with about 4 YOE currently working as the accounting supervisor in a large municipal environment. I report directly to the controller and work closely with our financial reporting manager (CPA) to prepare our Annual Comprehensive Financial Report. Current comp is just over $73K, which is below market rate for my area, but I have great WLB and benefits (never over 40 hours a week, plenty of PTO, three months paid parental leave, and $0 health insurance premiums for my family of three).

My state recently passed legislation that created an additional pathway for CPA licensure. In lieu of the 150 credit hour requirement, all you need is a bachelors in accounting and 2 years of work experience signed off by a CPA.

I plan to stay in local government for the foreseeable future, and I’m debating whether or not it’s worth pursuing the CPA designation. I don’t think it would do much for me in the short term, as there’s already talks of promoting me to accounting manager, but could it help me in the long term? Really, the main reason I’m interested at this point is the prestige and being able to tell people that I’m a CPA.

Advice Not getting interviews is hurting my studies

I’m doing a master in accounting, and I think everyone knows how the workload can be for accounting especially for a short program. I haven’t been getting interviews lately and it’s honestly one of the only things that was keeping me going.

Before my studies I took a gap year but getting interviews for internships/jobs genuinely motivated me. Now it’s nothing and I find it hard to focus when studying for a test because I think instinctively my body feels like I’m doing it for nothing, that it’s just a waste of time. Does anyone else feel the same way??
