Content/Multimedia Had a fruit fly infestation at home so I set up traps and tested the efficiency of various baits

Last month I had a serious fruit fly infestation at home so I set up basic DIY traps I found on the internet:

  • Fill a glass or another container with vinger with a drop of dish soap, cover it with a plastic wrap and puncture small holes into it. The fruit flies will get inside but not out and drown in the liquid

Then I decided to use various baits instead of common white vinegar recommended in tutorials. I tried distilled vinegar, wine vinegar, white wine, beer and citrus fruit syrup. I set up the traps and let them be for about 3 weeks.

Beer proved to be the most efficient, with white wine slowly behind. Vinegar seemed to work fine on its own but in presence of alternatives, it wasn't very popular among the fruit flies, with wine vinegar being slightly more efficient than distilled vinegar. I added citrus fruit syrup as well just as an idea (they're called fruit flies after all) but only two flies wandered there.

So in conclusion, this DIY trap works well with beer being the most efficient bait.

Kitchen Dishwasher ran with Dawn instead of detergent

My husband ran our dishwasher was Dawn soap instead of actual detergent. Fortunately the suds weren’t terrible, thank the stars for that. However, it seems like the soap/scent was baked into our silicone and plastic dishes and utensils. I ran the dishwasher a couple more times yesterday without any detergent and no heat dry but I’m concerned that it won’t be enough. My husband just took his coffee thermos to work and says he can taste the soap when he drinks through the lid.

Anything else I should try? Are my dishes and utensils a lost cause?

Bathroom Is there an easier way to clean these blinds?

Thumbnail

We have a window in our shower. The glass has a “frosted” film on it, but it also looks directly into our neighbour’s window, so in the interest of privacy and keeping the ledge/window dry, the blinds are necessary. It gets this orange build-up on in, especially the cord. The only way I’ve found to clean it is to take it all down and scrub each slat individually, as well as the cords. Is there any easier way?

General Cleaning HVAC guy blew 10+ years of soot out of my gas boiler with an air compressor. My entire studio apartment is covered in soot/dust.

Hi everyone, I really need some advice.

I rent a small 1-bedroom apartment. Today, a technician came to service my gas boiler. He used an air compressor to clean it out, and it turned out to be insanely dirty. It honestly looks like it hadn't been cleaned in over a decade. It's a miracle it was still working and that I hadn't died of CO2 poisoning, yet.

The issue is that the air compressor sent a fine layer of soot and dust all over my apartment. Everything is covered, white painted walls, wooden surfaces and furniture, plastic surfaces, and fabrics like my couch and the courtains.

I tried wiping a small area on the wall with a dry cloth, but it’s already leaving dark smudges/stains.

What is the best way (and sequence) to clean this off different surfaces without embedding the soot deeper into the paint or fabrics?

Any specific products, techniques, or "do NOT do this" warnings would be greatly appreciated!

General Cleaning House with oily, slight gas smell

I'm helping my boyfriend's aunt clean her new (very old) home. The only weird smell and its very slight and almost seems like its coming from the kitchen, but there's a lot of wood ( bannisters, door frames, etc) that we cleaned ( Murphy's oil soap). It's not a smell like a gas leak, but more like a weird, slight burnt oil smell....

I have to help her get rid of it. Does anyone have a clue hat it is?

Also, we have cleaned the home and it is immaculate-including the walls and ceilings.

TIA

Bathroom Did I ruin my shower door?

Post image

I’ve tried everything on this shower door:

Water, vinegar, dawn
Bar keepers friend
CLR
Bio clean

Tried using scrub daddy, #0000 steel wool, magic eraser (which may actually have scratched a little, oops)

Nothing has touched it, and actually seemed to maybe make it worse?

Do I need to give in and just replace it?

One of my children knocked a bottle of acetone over on the sink and it dripped on my bathroom sink. Any thoughts on how to draw the stain out or am I screwed? Rental apartment, otherwise I wouldn’t care so much.

Edit: I don’t know what this sink is made from. I’m investigating!

Discussion Cleaning tools/products to help with AUDHD and overstimulation?

Since finding out I'm on the spectrum I've come to find a lot of sensory items/products help a lot with regulation and overall regrounding myself. I've also learned where my head is effects my environment and things get neglected and crazy FAST. Overtime this made me realize, when I'm in the zone/head space to, I don't actually hate cleaning. What I hate is having to look at and touch dirt, it's overstimulating and I end up pushing cleaning duties that aren't straight forward, like laundry and putting dishes in the dish washer, to the side because an area looks too dirty and I don't have the mental capacity to get my hands and self dirty. Any tools and products that anyone with ADHD, Autism, or any other disability you found to be extremely helpful, less overstimulating, and even quick? Especially helps keep a house clean day to day?

Discussion Dusting Furniture Tips

Wondering what is a better way to dust table tops, end tables etc.

If I use a cloth of some sort and something like Pledge then the cloth becomes clogged up with debris and cleaner so I don't feel I want to put it in the washing machine.

What do you do in this case?

General Cleaning How do I clean cement floor?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi guys, my barn cat has some bad fleas. I’m getting him a treatment today, but everywhere online says to deep clean your house. He only sleeps in this storage room (no access to our house at any time) which has cement floors. I vacuumed his cat tree and plan to spray it with flea spray. He sleeps on a blanket that I will be washing with hot water every day so it’s fresh every time he sleeps on it.

I swept and vacuumed this floor but not sure how to “clean” it?

Discussion First robot vacuum and mop: what should I prioritize as a beginner?

• Upvotes

Vacuuming and mopping every weekend has started taking up most of my Saturday. Between daily dust, dirt tracked in from outside, and waiting for the floors to dry, I'd like to make routine cleaning less of a wholeday job.

I'm shopping for my first robot vacuum and mop, and the part I find hardest to judge from product pages is how much work the machine itself needs. With the eufy E35, I'm looking at the self emptying dock and DuoSpiral anti-tangle brushes, but I don't yet have a feel for how much hands-on maintenance would remain.

My main priority is cutting down the time I spend cleaning each week. Emptying a tank or rinsing a tray seems manageable, but I'd like to get a clearer picture of the regular upkeep before buying. How much weekly maintenance should I realistically expect?

Kitchen How to remove this buildup on the back of my gas oven?

Used some Weiman heavy duty oven cleaner to clean the oven and worked great except for this area. Been like that since I purchased my home. IDK what the previous owners did.

AI said its baked on grease and holding a wet towel will loosen it up... uh yeah I got better things to do. Thinking about using a razor scrapper but dont want to scratch up the oven.

Discussion How do you get over the absolute mind-numbing despair of cleaning? Or make it fun?

Hello. This may not be the typical question, but it's serious.

I am not joking when saying this, but cleaning makes me absolutely miserable. I meticulously just try to never get anything dirty and thus barely live which is also its own misery, but inevitably .. you must clean.

I have to do everything manually for multiple people. The dishes, filling the washer, hanging things to dry, the carpet, the beds, cleaning after visitors, maintenance, food. It feels like it is my entire life.

So my question is this...

How do you, personally, make this at all bearable or fun?

Is there a ritual you do? Is there anything? This isn't personal advice question, I am just asking, what makes you personally enjoy it - if there is anyone that does.

I am trying to view it differently, so I would really like to know what stuff makes people happy about it.

Are there any tools you especially like?
A ritual you do?

Anything about your experiences would be great.

Hi guys just moved into a new flat and there was a history of flooding (this is fixed now) however it seems to have left a gross grime in the bathroom tiles where the grout sits, can anyone advise on what to try next? For reference i have already used a bleach/bicarb solution and scrubbed with a toothbrush, it seems to have worked a little but I just want it to look less brown and funky..
