Discussion How do you get over the absolute mind-numbing despair of cleaning? Or make it fun?

• Upvotes

Hello. This may not be the typical question, but it's serious.

I am not joking when saying this, but cleaning makes me absolutely miserable. I meticulously just try to never get anything dirty and thus barely live which is also its own misery, but inevitably .. you must clean.

I have to do everything manually for multiple people. The dishes, filling the washer, hanging things to dry, the carpet, the beds, cleaning after visitors, maintenance, food. It feels like it is my entire life.

So my question is this...

How do you, personally, make this at all bearable or fun?

Is there a ritual you do? Is there anything? This isn't personal advice question, I am just asking, what makes you personally enjoy it - if there is anyone that does.

I am trying to view it differently, so I would really like to know what stuff makes people happy about it.

Are there any tools you especially like?
A ritual you do?

Anything about your experiences would be great.

Discussion How do you decide what to keep?

• Upvotes

How do you decide what to keep and what to get rid of, especially when it's something you might need again?

For example, I'm involved in dog rescue but am slowly stepping away from it. I have several dog crates sitting around that I'm not currently using, but I could need one at any time. How many should I keep? One? None?

Another example is those little clear plastic zippered bags that sheet sets come in. I had saved a bunch, finally threw them away, and then, of course, needed one! So do I keep one or two just in case? And if so, where do you store random "might need someday" things?

I can afford to replace these things if I need them, but they're sold in multipacks, which means I'd end up with extras that need to be stored anyway.

These are just two examples, but the list is endless. Different clothing sizes. Dog leashes. Shipping envelopes. Blankets. Appliance boxes. Etc.

Bathroom How to clean shower roommate left disgusting?

So far I’ve personally tried:

- scrubbing bubbles extra strength
- dawn dish soap
- baking soda and vinegar
- a steam gun
- vigorous scrubbing in all of the above

I’ve barely made a dent in it. I think the dawn dish soap is the closest I’ve come to getting it clean but it’s still awful.

I windexed tf out of the door but it’s still basically opaque.

It is a 10-15 year old shower is there a chance it’s just time for my landlord to replace the pan? Idk if it’s fiberglass or plastic but either way its own of those and Google said those should be replaced about every 15 years

General Cleaning What tips do you have for changing the quality of your air (freshening it up) in a small apartment with poor airflow?

• Upvotes

We live in a 600 square foot apartment and there’s no cross ventilation, only 1 entrance with windows next to it, a small window in the bathroom, and a sliding window in the bedroom. We have a cleaner coming once a month, have air purifiers in each room, large dehumidifiers, and ceiling fans. Aside from running these, getting the apartment professionally cleaned, and keeping windows open with a small exhaust fan, and doing simmer pots? Moving is not currently an option. The air is so stale and cooking smells linger and stick no matter how long the kitchen vent is on. I’m at my wits end. I just want it to not smell like stagnant stale air. I can’t use things like febreze or plug ins. Would scrubbing the walls help? Mopping every few days? It’s just two of us, no kids and no pets, and we are barely home with our work schedules.

Bathroom Did I ruin my shower door?

Post image
• Upvotes

I’ve tried everything on this shower door:

Water, vinegar, dawn
Bar keepers friend
CLR
Bio clean

Tried using scrub daddy, #0000 steel wool, magic eraser (which may actually have scratched a little, oops)

Nothing has touched it, and actually seemed to maybe make it worse?

Do I need to give in and just replace it?

Flooring Help with concrete floors

Hey guys!

I have those very nice concrete slab floor at my store, but its been a forever struggle to try to keep them clean without the mop and soap traces that stains it.

We tried walking after the mop with a dry towel to wipe down right away, we tried a wet one, vinegar (but its too stinky and for too long, its a high end jewelry store, I don't want that smell here anymore) we tried more soap, less soap, swiffer, normal mop, a bunch of soap, natural one, chemical ones.... I'm a bit out of options and my floor always looks nasty.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get rid of those traces? I don't know if the pictures are clear enough, it doesn't show too much on them, but its very clear when you look at them here.

Any help would be great! Thanks :)

Bathroom anyone else tried one of these for the hair on the shower drain cover?

Picking wet hair off the shower drain cover is easily least favorite bathroom chore. It’s not a big job. really hate that cold, slimy clump sticking to my fingers.

today tried wenlenie clickclip HairGrabber, and it’s made this particular job a lot less gross. Press it down over the hair, lift it off the cover, then flick it up and down over the bin to release it. Not having to grab the clump myself is the part I like.

It’s only for hair sitting on flat, non-recessed drain covers. It won’t clear a clogged pipe, and it isn’t suitable for recessed or linear drains.

anyone else used these? Or found similar tool recommend? Curious how easy yours is to empty and rinse afterward.

Content/Multimedia Had a fruit fly infestation at home so I set up traps and tested the efficiency of various baits

Post image
• Upvotes

Last month I had a serious fruit fly infestation at home so I set up basic DIY traps I found on the internet:

  • Fill a glass or another container with vinger with a drop of dish soap, cover it with a plastic wrap and puncture small holes into it. The fruit flies will get inside but not out and drown in the liquid

Then I decided to use various baits instead of common white vinegar recommended in tutorials. I tried distilled vinegar, wine vinegar, white wine, beer and citrus fruit syrup. I set up the traps and let them be for about 3 weeks.

Beer proved to be the most efficient, with white wine slowly behind. Vinegar seemed to work fine on its own but in presence of alternatives, it wasn't very popular among the fruit flies, with wine vinegar being slightly more efficient than distilled vinegar. I added citrus fruit syrup as well just as an idea (they're called fruit flies after all) but only two flies wandered there.

So in conclusion, this DIY trap works well with beer being the most efficient bait.

General Cleaning How to clean out grime from the inside of shoes

Throwaway because Im too embarrassed to have this on main.

I have a pair of platform mary janes that I wear to work. I wore just the shoes without any kind of socks or hosery for like, a year, and my shoes smell BAD. I recently found stockings that work like socks, but everytime I take my shoes off they still stink and there is a layer of grime adhered to the bottom of my socks on the heal and ball of my foot.

Does anyone have any advice to clean these? I cant pull the sole of the shoe out.

Tools/Equipment Bought a second hand TV and it smells of weed.

Hi!
I purchased a TV for our basement, it was a reasonable price which maybe should have tipped me off but it is now very obvious this person MUST have smoked weed near it, up close I smell it.

I currently have it in our guest room with the window open airing it out and I’ve wiped it down to get all the dust of (it was sooo dusty!) any other tips?

General Cleaning Vape residue stuck to everything!

My flatmate is quite bad for vaping indoors. There's been many a time that I've gone into a room and they've absolutely hotboxed it. I have no problems (abilities wise) cleaning the bathroom as the walls, floors and surfaces are easy to clean. I can handle the sticky residue on the windows with soap, vinegar or cleaner. But I can't get the smell to leave the spare bedroom or even really their own room!

I was steam cleaning the downstairs sofa, because I spilled something, and I noticed the smell of the vape fluid almost immediately!

It's the bane of my existence. Any ideas on how to get the smell out of soft furnishings and carpet would be greatly appreciated! Also, any tips for cleaning walls, without potentially damaging paint/wallpaper would be appreciated.

I'm aware the problem won't go away until they stop, but until they can at least open the windows, I need to find some way to sort it...

Hey everyone,

I got a shoe stain that my friend did that I tried to remove it multiple times with multiple products like vinegar, oxyclean-type products and nothing works.

It’s not an iron mark, I don’t have an iron and I exclusively use a steamer.

Any ideas to try to get it out?

Hi !
While cleaning my grandparents home, I took those bowls that hold lots of memories and was wondering how to restore them, I think they were mostly used to drink coffee and hot chocolate, so that could be why the color is so brown. Any tips ?

General Cleaning Cannot get the fowl smell out of 64gallon garage trash can

It’s a medium size and we only put trash bags, no exposed liquids or messy things.

this month it started smelling fowl. Idk if it was rotten potatoes (they were bagged) but since it’s been horrible. The entire garage smells a faint horrid smell and when we open the lid, yoh cannot walk out for an hour or two until it disappears

I’ve soaked the full can to the brim with water + 2 gallons of 10% sodium hypochlorite (pool chlorine) and it helped slightly
