I think I'm very late to the data hoarding party, but let's say due to the general climate of the world I now feel a certain need to store a lot of stuff offline. I would like some advice or strategy for a newbie looking to amass big quantities of digital books (history/philosophy/CS/novels). I know the very basics of torrent.

I'm starting to build a media server and one thing I was hoping to do was get a lot of old RARBG/VXT (RIP) releases. I saw, before it went down, there was a torrent that didn't have RARBG or VXT in the name but had hundreds of their releases in one file. Btdig seems to be down, but the other torrent search engines I've tried either don't look inside directories or don't list everything (I've been unable to find it again), or don't weigh searches so if I'm searching for a film with common words I'm out of luck. Any one know of anything similar?

I have an HGST 0F25739AR85140P62 (P/N: 0F25739) drive, I can't even remember where I got it. It doesn't spin up when I plug it in, or register that it's even receiving power, so I'm not sure what exactly is wrong with it.
I'd like to see if I can repair it, but I've never repaired a drive like this before. Would I just replace the controller board first? Or alternatively, are there any other troubleshooting steps I can take to determine what's wrong, or do I just assume it's dead and move on?

Hi All,
There is a page that I have been following for years on Twitter / X which tweets about music production tips almost daily. Their advice has been second to none, and has been insanely vital in shaping my own skills as a producer / audio engineer.
With that in mind, I'm looking to archive all the tweets made by this page (Including attached images to these tweets, and NOT including any reposts or replies to own posts, or replies to other peoples tweets) so that I am able to access these offline (Preferably so that I can access these from my Home Server for easy access / multiple device viewing)
I appreciate that there is quite a bit online surrounding Tweet / Twitter Profile archival and downloading, but after alot of trial and error, I have found that 90% of these relate to the Pre-API change, and about 10% of these are either broken, or are locked behind an exorbitant paywall.
Is there anyone that has had success in the last few months with achieving this? I would appreciate some guidance or a point in the right direction as for what tools I would need to use (Just to note, I am MORE than comfortable with CLI tools).
Thank you very much for reading and for your assistance on this, its all in the name of archiving valuable knowledge!

Is it possible to get the special tape, whatever that is, that book preservers may use? Its only for my old school books from the 80s.
In the UK we were made to cover our books. One of them has my favourite wallpaper from the late 80s that was in my bedroom, as a cover. But its falling off now. Want to hold it on with tape but I hear normal celotape causes issues over time?

I have four 2.5" HDDs containing the same files, all formatted in NTFS, and I use Windows 10. I intend to copy these files to two new 2.5" external HDDs. Which file system format would you recommend to ensure better protection against file corruption and data loss, while also remaining fully compatible with 64-bit Windows 10? What is the best option?

Hey, all. I spent a few years and a good chunk of change tracking down, scanning, cleaning, and uploading the work of Frans Masereel, the woodcut artist from the early 1900s whose work has now come into the public domain in the US. The collection comprises 2,089 images, available publicly and for free -- the individual artwork pieces are public domain and the entire collection's arrangement altogether is released under a Creative Commons license (for those who want to release altered collections). I put all of the images into a PDF so that anyone can fly through all of the works and see what Masereel created, all of it ready for free, public use by anyone.
Many of the pages were yellowed, so, I had to do some gimp work and colorizing to make them nearly pure black and white.
Some of the scans are massive (20k by 28k pixels), and at 1,800 woodcuts, that would be a bit to download all at once. I recommend the PDF of all the artwork (just under a gig), which shows smaller versions of the images. I use that as a catalogue, and then I grab the original when I want a high-res version for whatever I'm working on.
Youtube Video Format: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReZYh5PQfQ8
Archive.org PDF (789mb): https://archive.org/details/frans-masereel-career-1918-1930_pdf
Archive.org Web: https://archive.org/details/frans-masereel-career-1918-1930_art
Archive.org File/Folder Browser (easier for browsing individual images): https://archive.org/download/frans-masereel-career-1918-1930_art
These images came from 73 different books and magazines, in case you want to read the original books (most of which are German and French): https://archive.org/details/@holdoffhunger
My first books were acquired in 2020, and I started the scanning and cleaning process a year later. By 2023, some of the books were on archive.org, and now, as of this week (around Sept 25, 2026), I should have comprehensive coverage of the career of Frans Masereel for 1918-1930 (the public domain years in America). Please, enjoy! Take Masereel's work and make art, make peace, make change, and make love.

I am backing up a pile of drives for work. Stuff from the previous 25 years.
I got everything copied over. I am now being asked to make the dates on the new drive reflect the dates on the original drives, either the date the file was made or the metadata.
This is like, hundreds of thousands of files. It is not possible to manually change all the info or add dates to the name.
Is there a way to do this? I have the old drives.
Worth mentioning, I am on a Mac.

Hello. Any ideas on how to do this? I'm not looking for something to "hide" it. Just a neat place to put all my porn. It would help if the videos don't show up in my gallery but primarily I just want to make a neat little porn collection on my phone

I have two 8TB and two 10TB drives that I replaced with larger (18TB and 26TB) capacity drives right before prices went bananas.
They all have about 5 years of on-time and only one has any SMART errors on it.
So I'm torn... do I try to sell them locally because drives go for so much now? Or keep them in case I need a spare?
I just have a 4-bay NAS and a mini PC server so no spare drives to put these older ones into some kind of pool. I could get another NAS, I suppose, and put them to use. But I don't have a strong need.

Hi,
I’ve been ripping through my old dvd collection and started to collect and rip blurays.
I’ve come across many DVDs that have a directors cut and theatrical version, so I just take both versions, they’re only 4gb each
With bluray, it gets hard to ignore the additional space two versions would use, I’ve only been looking at one film at the moment as a test; Beauty and the Beast.
This has two versions, they share most of the segments but the special edition has an extra scene or so.
So I’ve been working on a tool that takes both ripped versions, looks at both and stores matching video and audio and then keeps unique data separately. It keeps the necessary information to reconstruct the mkvs exactly without reencoding . I recovered both mkvs from the archive and compared their hashes with the original files and they match
Originally the files are 45gb together, but together as one file archive they consume 25gb. Oh yeah, and now my JellyFin plugin can read the file. It reads the map for the selected version and supplies the original mkv data as needed, allowing playback and seeking without extracting the entire file first.
Is there a better way to do this?
Cheers

I've got like 15 AT&T Internal Training books, They can help anyone who'd a Tech it's obviously not AT&T Specific, I was thinking of selling them for cheap but I doubt they have value. I figure they would be good to archive, but I don't have the time to scan them. If someone would like to pay the cheap media mail shipping to get them to archive and do whatever you want before I recycle them, Let me know.
No this isn't a sale post, it's free.

Hello.
I've been looking for a good Windows backup tool that:
The solutions I've found so far don't really seem to tick all three boxes at once. The only one that came close seems to be Ashampoo Backup Pro, but it's incredibly slow and buggy plus not well reviewed.
I'm wondering if y'all would have better recommendations. Thanks!

I'm completely new to this subreddit, but I'm desperate.
My brother passed away, and there's videos he posted on Facebook that I want to desperately save in case anything happens to his Facebook account. Videos of his laugh, humor, nonsense, all of it.
But I'm completely stumped and have no idea how to even go about saving this stuff. There's no download option, and I don't even think there's a "share" option on most of his stuff. I've tried some older methods online, but can't seem to get it right. Maybe I'm just slow, I don't know. But I just need some sort of step-by-step that's up to date, if any of you know.
If anyone could help me with me, I'll be forever grateful. This means a lot to me.

I've been trying to find full recordings of older red carpet events and film festival broadcasts, but I'm having almost no luck.
I'm specifically looking for things like Cannes and Venice Film Festival red carpets, photocalls, press conferences, and other events like the Oscars, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, etc.

Out of curiosity, what's a good rule of thumb for price per terabyte? I'm running out of storage and hoping to pick up some drives.

When I'd heard Cracked.com had unceremoniously started removing their own archive, I panicked. I hadn't visited Cracked in many years, but there was a time it was easily the best site on the internet. I, of course, came right to this sub, but barely found any discussion of Cracked, let alone an archive, so I decided to see what I could do! A month and some change later I finally finished rescuing as much of classic Cracked.com as I could before more of it disappears.
What started as a simple archive turned into a full completeness audit using Cracked’s surviving indexes and sitemap, the Wayback Machine, Common Crawl, and historical metadata. The main target was roughly the 2005–2017 “golden age” of Cracked.
During the audit I found thousands of old column URLs that weren’t represented in the original archive set I started with, so this ended up being a much bigger project than expected. There are a handful of old external Flash/video embeds that are still dead dependencies, but the archive itself is intact.
The final result is:
I packed the archive as a ~14Gb ZIM file for viewing / self-hosting with Kiwix. Full-text search and sort by year included.
I’m not sure about the rules on sharing here so I'm sharing the actual ZIM/torrent separately in r/DHExchange so other's can enjoy as well. I will remove the link to that post if against the rules, but I wanted to, at the very least, share my accomplishment here as I could never have done anything like this without the years spent lurking in this community.

Concerned lurker here.
I recently saw several articles claiming that the Environmental Protection Agency's archive has been slated for retirement on Dec. 31, 2026.
What is the current awareness regarding this, and is this seen as a legitimate concern?
Are there any current efforts to backup this important resource?
The preservation of this archive is a conern being that it has been used in court to prove harm to both people and the environment and has functioned as a protection against such harms.
EPA [site](https://archive.epa.gov/) and notice of retirement.
Edit: additional context

I'm looking at a refurbished 6 TB Seagate ST6000NM0115 (I know 6 TB Is amateur hour around here, but it's genuinely all I need for the moment) and I'm hoping to get a recommendation for a caddy or enclosure that will work with it and allow me to connect the drive to my laptop via USB. I don't mind if it needs an external power supply as well. I'm also curious as to any advice you good folks may have for me as a first-timer with this kind of setup.
