I got to do a collaboration with mood fabrics and made a coat and vest from the 1790s hoping to get a sleepy Hollow vibe. Looking back I wish I had done some parts differently, but overall I’m happy with the results!

I have a question! Fabric/ribbon technique

Post image

Hello,

I’m wondering if this type of fabric or technique has a particular name? I’m not sure of the construction but my guess is it could either be a chiffon sewn with large satin ribbons or it could be some sort of magical fabric I’ve never heard of. Thoughts? Thank you.

In Progress Piece/Outfit 1530s kirtle mockup

Here’s my mockup for my 1530’s side lacing kirtle! I made it out of store bought cotton buckram and a cotton thrifted bedsheet, and using lacing rings beucase I really did not want to do hand sewn eyelets. It’s almost done except for hemming the skirt and attaching the straps at the shoulders (currently pinned). For the pattern used the Elizabethan Costume 16th century stays calculator and their guide to convert it to a kirtle (along with a few rougher bodice mockups made of canvas). I had originally planned to machine stitch most of this to get it done quickly but so many things needed to be hand sewn for various reasons, my wrists will not be happy tomorrow 😂 I put so much work into just the mockup both to practice the techniques and have someone made of cheaper materials to wear while going around the campgrounds at the renaissance festival (I do not want to be wearing silk while camp crawling)

Overall I’m pretty happy with it, but there’s a few mistakes in fit/construction.

  1. I used three layers of buckram for this but i definitely need to use a few more, there’s wrinkling especially in the front and the basque waist sticks out. For this mockup I will probably add a busk down the front to help but want to avoid boning in the final since it’s not accurate
  2. the angle of the straps in the back is a bit off as bow out a bit at the beginning of the straps. Also do we think the straps need to be even close to my armpits? I am worried they will just fall off all day if I make them any wider
  3. I might make the convex curve of the neckline more dramatic to better match my reference photo
  4. the real kirtle skirt will be longer, I was working with the fabric I had here
  5. I definitely made the skirt too wide because pleating it down became so chunky I had to attach it to the bodice very oddly (bind the edges of the skirt and whip stitch it to the bottom edge, rather than sewing it the inside of the bottom edge of the bodice). I just loooove a full skirt tho so I do want decent fullness on my final… pray I have enough silk brocade (from a secondhand sari).
  6. I’m debating if I will keep the flatter front style skirt or make it equally gathered all the way around for the final kirtle. I’ve seen both in the time period
  7. Should I keep the basque waist or make it straight across?

I would love tips on how to fix said issues or further critiques on how accurate it is for a 1530s Franco-Flemish kirtle! I really have no clue was the skirt looks like based on the paintings of this exact style, I can only find half-lengths. I’m also planning on wearing a partlet even though it’s not in the painting because these low necklines they love are dangerously close to a nip-slip

I have a question! Dating help: This image is used on Wikipedia for two people who were executed in Iraq in 1917. I suspect the photo may be misattributed. Does the clothing look plausible for the Ottoman Empire in the 1910s?

Fabric Shop specializing in historical fabrics

Post image

This is just one example, an authentic Belle Époque fabric made in France, of the fabrics this 50-year-old shop carries, who also were the source for the fabrics for the costumes for all Harry Potter movies, the Games of Thrones series and much more. They have all kinds of fabrics that are near impossible to get anywhere else (to my knowledge), like handwoven wild nettle cloth, 18th and 19th-century tulle, lace and silk jaquard (some made on the authentic French looms used in the originals) with matching silk thread, handwoven Tussah silks and Harris Tweeds, haute couture Florentine prints from one of the last specialty shops in Florence, some with historical prints etc.

I'm not a historical costume expert, but someone in my family is, and I'd just thought you might appreciate me sharing it.

I have a question! Corsetier and crinoline maker recommendations?

Hey folks! I have made many corsets and crinolines myself over the years, but I gotta be real, they are my least favorite things to make. Does anyone know of good quality makers? The corset and cage crinoline I want to buy will actually be the foundations for my historically inspired wedding dress, so I am willing to spend a pretty penny on ones that are good and comfortable and made to my specifications. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Advice for last minute costumes.

Are you worried about getting your costume done in time? Is your costume almost done but sn important piece (eg shirt jacket) won't ship in time?

Presenting: Wearing a blanket! Wearing a blanket is a near universal experience for people in cold weather climates across time periods! It also works across social classes although not nessarily outside the house.

Note: Not all blankets will be realistic to your time period.

I have a question! Got a pleating machine, any smocking project suggestions?

Post image

I just got a Read 16 row pleating machine for $15 (be jealous), so I’m wanting to try out smocking for the first time. I’m planning on making some historically-inspired smocked dresses to wear to work (office job). For reference I especially love 1890-1900s, 1950s, and early 1500s fashion, but that’s not all so don’t feel limited for those periods!

So general dress designs (I love big sleeves), or suggestions on specific smocking embroidery pattern that at a little flair without being too time consuming (I’ve seen some photos of especially gorgeous and detailed smocking embroidery but I’m not an embroiderer so nothing too crazy, I’d love things that add a little extra interest without adding too much extra time)

I have a question! Seeking Elizabethan era leather craft information

Hello!
I work at a major tourist attraction in London and am a keen maker and leather crafter. We're floating some ideas of running heritage craft workshops and sessions including leather working. I'm currently struggling to find information about specific 1500s Elizabethan and late Tudor age leather craft (ideally in England, but continental Europe will work just as well!) - if such a thing exists.

I'd love to see/ find examples of the craft from the period. Including techniques and products/ projects. Though I understand that it may be one of those crafts that has remained relatively unchanged for quite a while in history (one of the reasons I love it, is because its so hands on and traditional!)

Please drop any links or knowledge you have in the comments and thanks for your help in advance :)

Simple laced bodice pattern?

I'm new-ish to garment sewing, and I lean toward historically inspired dressing eg linen shift under simple wool dress. I would love to make a simple laced bodice to wear over a shift with a skirt, or over a dress. Not full stays cause I'm not ready for that. I know I'm not being period specific, because this is for daily wear not a costume. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Rococo miniature dress!!

Hey everyone! Back with another historical miniature!
For this little creation, I wanted to meld the extravagance and opulence of Elizabethan fashion with the playful cuteness and maximalism of the Rococo era! I absolutely adore the elaborate silhouettes, intricate embellishments, and over-the-top femininity of both periods, so I thought it would be fun to combine some of my favorite elements into one tiny ensemble!
The little stomachers are always my favorite part to make!! There’s something so satisfying about working with all the tiny details, decorations, and trims, especially at such a miniature scale. I love finding ways to incorporate the grandeur of historical fashion into something so small and whimsical. I used silk taffeta for the skirt and satin ribbon!
As always, I had so much fun experimenting with different historical influences and bringing this little outfit to life!

Made myself 1890s-1900s under garments but I don’t have a skirt or shirt waist made up yet so I chucked on a maxi skirt and a modern shirt to see the silhouette… somehow it kind of works?

I am hoping to make this over dress for next years Versailles Ball. I have already purchased a dress (from the same designer I took the photo from, just a different dress but I want to add an over layer exactly or as similar as pictured) if anyone has one or knows of where to find one, of course I’ll pay for the pattern! Pretty please with a cherry 🍒 on top
