Sharps Rifles - Serial Number Documentation

Hi all,

If you are looking for information on your original Sharps please let me know.

I am the current caretaker of the Sharps Rifle Co. Archive, having taken over the records from Dr. Labowskie at the beginning of 2025. I will continue to provide letters for serial number documentation and hopefully add to the knowledge and history around these firearms. The format is changing a bit, in addition to the normal 'factory letter' there will also be a page with more information on who it was sent to and, when applicable, what was going on in the region at the time. I also provide areas that may be worth future research and a list of suggested books including the ones I use as a general reference. Each letter is also now accompanied by two display cards, which contain all the information from the letter in a more concise format, one of which has a slot for a ribbon or thread so it can be attached to the Sharps for easy reference.

I do not charge anything to see if the firearm can be lettered, only for the letter itself.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Pistol Modification?

• Upvotes

I want a "Pocket Pistol?" if thats possible with cap and ball guns, Ive been looking at a few models and i notice there pretty big. Most being 6 inches or over. (I Know its very stupid) But has anyone ever tried to shorten a barrel by cutting it? Would that be ill advised for blackpowder? I know you dont require quite as strong steel for B.P compared to smokeless powder, Would it rupture the barrel? Could i just "Weld" a new sight on the shorten barrel, and still "Estimate" Where shots hit? I know this seems very Stupid and pointless. It Is. But im deadset on having a 32. - 45. "Mini Musket"

Everyone talks about Winchester, but the Remington Rolling Block was the rifle that actually conquered the world. Here’s the mechanical reality.

Hollywood has convinced most people that the lever-action Winchester was the undisputed king of the late 19th century. While it certainly won the civilian frontier, the global military reality was entirely different. The true conqueror of the era was the Remington Rolling Block.

When you look at the engineering, it makes perfect sense why over 40 national armies (and countless buffalo hunters) adopted it instead of early repeaters.

The Genius of Simplicity: The action essentially consists of just two massive moving parts—the breechblock and the hammer. There’s no delicate linkage or complex elevator systems to jam in mud, sand, or freezing conditions.

Pressure Handling: While early lever actions were restricted to relatively short, pistol-length cartridges like the .44-40 (due to elevator length and action strength limitations), the rolling block action was practically indestructible. The hammer physically locks the breechblock in place upon firing. This allowed it to easily handle massive military and buffalo cartridges like the .45-70 Govt, 11mm Mauser, and later even early smokeless high-pressure rounds like the 7x57mm.

Global Dominance: By the time Winchester was marketing the 1873, Remington had already armed the military forces of Sweden, Spain, Egypt, Argentina, and Denmark.

I just put together a deep-dive mini-documentary analyzing the history, the mechanical genius of the Geiger-Rider action, and why it became the most widely exported rifle of its time.

If you appreciate the pure mechanics and history of single-shot mastery, check out the full breakdown here:

Can’t get wedge pin out

Post image

I just bought my first BP pistol, a pietta 1851. I took the screw out the other side, tried the clothes pin method, beat it with a rubber mallet, tried depressing it with a flathead screwdriver and tapping it out, nothing has worked and I’ve obviously raped the finish of the gun. Anything else I can do?

Cool find.

I bought it for the old tin but it came with extras. So many mysteries, what are 1/4 Grafs, No. M1 and No 3 threads? Also, regarding the parts, seems a tumbler, a sear, 4 springs of one type and one a little different. The springs are sort of like the springs for a frizzen but not quite. Looking for info if anyone has any.

Single shot pistol recommendations?

I’d like to purchase a single shot in .50 that will handle heavy loads and maxi balls. I’ve been looking at CVA, Traditions, and Lyman. They all seem to be more or less the same except for the grip geometry. If anyone has insight into one of these models, feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Advice on first cheap Revolver?

Im 18 and need a "legal" gun for self defense and have been looking at cap and ball Blackpowder revolvers. (I Know Crazy) But i figured it would even the playing field against a knife. Im trying to get something around $300? Is that even possible really? I dont care if it is a "Replica" Per say. I know in my state its legal to own without a FFL if the Technology is the same (Cap&ball). Not whether it looks a certain way. like barrel size or concealability. Are there any companies that sell a Dirty cheap Revolver? With like a plastic grip or some shit? Also I liked the American Gun Craft Diablo 12ga pistol, But its pricey. Does anyone know of a Double barreled large caliber blackpowder pistol? Preferably with 2 barrels.

Are my expectations too unrealistic for such a "niche" market?

what works for me on open sights

Post image

While many shooters instinctively choke up close to the rear sight making the notch appear large and open, which can help with leading moving targets but forces you to juggle multiple alignment variables at once my preferred style for precision range work is to weld my cheek far back against the steel or brass butt plate. Increasing this eye relief makes the iron sights appear much finer and naturally locks in your rear alignment, eliminating the constant micro-management of the sights themselves. This removes a variable from the equation, allowing you to focus entirely on elevation and driving the center post directly onto the target with maximum repeatability.

I really hope this might help you. It sure helped me

Successful hunt with CVA Hawken 50cal

Post image
226 Upvotes

After getting skunked in rifle season for three years running since I moved to PA, I gave muzzleloader season a try. Glad I did! I bought this older CVA Hawken 50cal percussion rifle expressly for this purpose but was unable to make the season last year.

After sighting it in this year, tragedy struck when I broke the threads off the old powder drum while reassembling it after cleaning. I got a new drum just in time and, after drilling and tapping it for the nipple (a first for me and kind of nerve-wracking), I got out in the woods and got it done.

Hunting load: .490 lead round ball, .010 lubed patch, 70gr H777. Achieved full penetration of the chest cavity on a front-facing shot at 30yds. Very little meat damage, missed the gut cavity, and narrowly avoided the tenderloin as it exited her back. Couldn't ask for better performance.

I've always enjoyed shooting black powder guns recreationally but I feel the connection runs deeper now that they've put food on my table. I think muzzleloader season may be my main effort going forward!

Special thanks to my improvised sling, the haversack I made from an old bank bag, the $12 flea market powder horn, and the beautiful possibles bag my wife got me for my birthday!

Finished my barrel for my Traditions Kentucky rifle. Though a little browning solution did get inside but not very deep. Hopefully it'll be ok. Ignore the WD40. I coated with boiled linseed oil after 5 coats of Dangler's browning solution

My friend recently was given this japanese gun. We think its an ozutsu. We were wanting to see if anyone might have any knowledge on this. We aren't really sure what exactly it is, how old it is, and possible value.

777 in sidelock issues?

I usually shoot real black powder in my percussion Hawken, but due shortages I could only get 777. I was shooting 250gr sabots and a really thick ring of crud started building up in the breech of my gun. So much that it actually blocked the flash hole and the gun wouldn't go off. I had to break it up with a cleaning brush and then flush it with water. I've shot hundreds of rounds with real black powder and never had a problem.

Anyone else have this problem?

Edit: only 4 shots.

Updated with more pics without doxing myself quite so bad.

Kind gentlemen in Smokey Valley Muzzleloaders taught me everything I know.

.625 caliber .60 ball and leather patching with bees wax.

Love the brass. Traditional brown, though synthetic. Sights adjustable. Probably have to file down. I'll also polish the lock internals.

Anybody else dabble in flint napping? This bad boy takes 1" suckers.

Open ramrod channel for easier cleaning.

I don't need the sword bayonet.

Cheers.

24 hours of milling, seemed to burn smoother and maybe hotter? Definitely felt denser than my fire pit charcoal variety.

Percussion Cap Question:

Post image
51 Upvotes

Ive got a few black powder revolvers from Pietta, and they use #10 caps.

However I saw some stuff online saying it might be worth it to switch the nipples to #11, and use that. This would be nice because they'd use the same caps as my rifle.

So, 2 questions really:

1: is it worth it in any way to make the change?

2: if so, where can I buy #11 nipples that fit?
