Welcome to the /r/Indianapolis weekly casual conversation and questions thread.
We've set this thread up so that folks have a place to post general topics that don't necessarily need their own post and for folks to ask questions and get recommendations. Restaurant recommendations, places to stay, areas to live, parking help, airport information, things to do, help from social services, and things like that.

Pretty awful news coming out of Carmel with little to no coverage of it. Anyone know how closely a minor would be monitored at a gun range? Does range USA have any liability in an issue like this? I’d imagine it’s not the first time this has happened. Prayers to the family and all who witnessed such a tragedy.
For the remainder of the week, over 700 historic preservation architects, engineers, building scientists, conservators, and contractors from all over the US and the world will be visiting our city for The Association for Preservation Technology International conference. This is a pretty big deal, since this conference is normally held in bigger cities like Montreal, or LA.
If you could, if you see any conference goers, please extend our friends a warm welcome, offer them advice on your favorite building, coffee shops, or restaurants. If you see people looking up at buildings, be sure to ask them what they are looking at - chances are you’ll get a mini history lesson! We are so happy we get to host them and show that the Midwest isn’t just something to fly over.
Hello! 6 weeks ago I trapped and fixed/fully vaccinated this momma cat who has been coming to me for a year and her baby. I didn't have the heart to release them since they are so gentle.
I have to move away in 4 months and my situation will not allow me to keep them. I'm looking to find them a forever home.
They get along incredibly well with other cats. Within a day, they were licking my 2 boys and rubbing heads every chance they got. Having other cats has made socializing them easier.
The baby is getting very used to me and I believe she will be close to fully socialized when it's time for her to be adopted. Momma is making progress but I suspect it will take her a long time before she will be unafraid of humans.
I'm looking for a place of patience and love that can give these two the comfy life they deserve. I've talked with the owner of Indy Adopts about rehoming options. Fosters/rescues are booked full at the moment and options are very low if any. I'd very much appreciate any advice on the situation.
I estimate momma is ~2-3 years and the baby is about 3 months now. Both of them have been perfect about the litter box since arriving. No issues in the slightest.
Note: If anyone is wondering about why she didn't have more babies, the doctor confirmed she had a harmless birth defect in her uterus which is why she was not pregnant until now and why she only had one kitten.
I have 2 x chow chows and a Boston Terrier….how easy/hard will I find it to get a rental home (good sized house not apartment) in Indy? In my grand master ‘move to Indy’ plan…I’d rent for a year until I decide where to buy…and I’m rather attached to all three dogs, so they have to come too
Edit to add I would have 300k canine liability)
I spotted a black pitbull/pitbull mix on the corner of East Street and Terrace. He or she has a collar, with an AirTag on it. No phone number or anything else. Dog seem sweet but very skittish. Moving too quickly for me to get a good picture.
Hello, I'm the founder of IN Tech for Progress, a non-profit organization that brings volunteers from Indiana's tech community to apply to technology to civic matters. Since 2020 we've offered the free, anonymous, nonpartisan "Indy Wait Times" app to show voters real-time wait information at polling locations in central Indiana.
This year for the first time we have made this app available to all 92 counties in Indiana for every day of early voting, under the name Vote IN Time, www.voteintime.org ! (We've outgrown the "Indy" name 😄 )
The wait time calculations are based on crowd-sourced submissions. It runs in your phone's browser, no download required, and we don't collect, store, or share/sell any personal information. You can provide your address to look up open locations near you, but we do not save any location data.
Once you select a polling location it's just a couple taps to tell us about the line. The wait time estimates get better the more people use it, so we appreciate any help in spreading the word.
It is available now through the rest of early voting and on Election Day November 3.
This is 100% volunteer built; we hope it's a useful tool. Most importantly, get out and vote!
Burner so she doesn’t see this.
My girlfriend is Chinese and finds American deserts too sweet.
I’m hoping to surprise her with a birthday cake made by someone either Chinese or who can tone down the sweetness of a cake. She enjoys Carmel or fruit flavors.
Not real interested in a premade factory/american grocery store cake or something merely decorated with a Chinese theme. I’m happy to go to a truly international market or someone who bakes out of their home. I just don’t know what’s available.
We are New York based but will be in town on her birthday next week.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
UPDATE: I have received a picture of her headstone. Thank you all very much for your help and suggestions!
Hi there, I am not local to Indianapolis, but my great great grandmother was buried there in Crown Hill Cemetery. I found her obituary online but cannot find a picture of her grave. It appears to be near the Wynnedale neighborhood.
If someone close to that area would be willing to take a picture of her gravestone, I would be incredibly grateful.
If you live nearby and it would be convenient for you to get there, please let me know!
Here is the plot information available from Find A Grave:
I'm seriously tired of everything being shutdown everywhere. They haven't even finished Washington Street or the expressway and yet, St. Clair is shutdown, Mass Ave. is shutdown and new sections of Washington Street are shutdown along with portions of Emerson Ave, Pennsylvania and other areas . . . combine that with utility work, constant trains and general rush hour traffic, it's become absolutely insane.
How is anyone supposed to get anywhere? What should take five minutes NOW takes 30 minutes or more - it's outrageous. And it doesn't seem like they're fixing anything - they just tear up the road, put up a bunch of cones and blockages and then let it sit there for months on end.
Who's getting paid is what I wanna know?
And since when was it Constitutionally viable to for the state to build a hotel, tax people for it and then they wouldn't even be able to afford to stay there in the first place???
Money is pouring into IPS school board races. A lot of that money is coming from pro-charter Stand for Indy. Check out whos receiving the most money and maybe ask who they will actually be working for.
I just moved to Indy and am wanting to add some wall art decor in my new apartment. I’m wanting to get lots of art pieces so not looking for anything fancy or expensive, just things that are affordable.
What places in Indy would you recommend that have affordable art? Could be local antique stores, thrift stores, art stores, etc!
Hello, I am currently looking for one male bowler for my Thursday Night Men's League at Western Lanes on Washington Street. If you're interested, please feel free to contact me.
Need about 3 inches taken off the bottom of a bridesmaid dress before next month. Nothing fancy with the fabric, just a simple hem. Everywhere I checked online has crazy long turnaround times or wants like 60 bucks just to shorten it.
Does anybody know where I can get this dish in a restaurant? I know many great recipes are available and I can make it myself, but I would like to eat it in a restaurant. If anybody knows if restaurant with this on the menu I'd be very grateful.
Has anyone noticed a sudden increase in court cases for health and hospital corporation of Marion county? I was looking up their court cases and they're mad going crazy after people. They're getting warrents to look inside along with a 2,500 fine for anything outside their house.
i’m looking for an apartment next year near butler university. however, me and my bf have a few animals between us. we have a cat and a senior labrador and i also have a chinchilla. i don’t want to give him up. does anyone know anywhere that would be accepting of my pets?
Had this cat in my care, we call him Babadook, showed up on my porch in severe shape. 4 months later, plenty of very necessary vet-care, and many very careful and well researched introduction sessions later between stray and resident cat, I’m at a loss. My resident cat has neurological condition, we were hoping this wouldn’t put a damper on this situation, but it has. He cannot be with another cat.
All that being said, I cannot take him to a shelter, Ive called many well before this situation and they’re incredibly full, and not even considering intakes (huge stray population in my neighborhood). He’s a black cat and animals without unique markings get overlooked. I’ve spent 400 dollars on vet care alone, I’m not putting him at risk for euthanasia. Unfortunately, he’s also beginning to show signs of stress, being in our bedroom and separate from the household for 2 months.
Any recommendations are appreciated, though please refrain from just giving me google results, personal recommendations or experience would be more helpful!! I’ve used google a ton, haha 💗
I have a telescope that I've had for while and just decided to pull it out and start using it but I can't see anything. I've youtubed potential issues/fixes but I'm not getting anywhere. Is there a store or a person that for a low price can come out and diagnose or maybe just teach me what I'm doing wrong?
