Why does State Farm use such an antiquated business model?

Local agents only work normal business hours, so you can’t make any policy changes after 5pm or on weekends. Moving to another state is such a complicated process and involves talking to multiple agents. Calling in to cancel and told no agent is available and it takes them half a day to call back.

Compare this to companies like GEICO or Progressive where I can do everything on a phone app.

Home Insurance Looking for landlord insurance that can be written in my LLC’s name (Texas rental)

I have a rental property in Texas that’s owned by my LLC, and I need a landlord policy with the LLC as the named insured.

I called State Farm and they said they can’t put the policy in the LLC’s name.

Has anyone found a company that will write a policy to an LLC at a reasonable price? A carrier, an independent agent, or an online option all work. I’d appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!

Homeowners Insurance Claim for Fallen Tree

I think this situation is very odd. I am getting input from people IRL but I figured why not get Reddit's opinion.

We had a large pine tree come down in a wind storm. It hit the house, took out part of the deck and did some other moderate but fixable damage. We called a tree company right away because half the tree was still standing, and we had the rest removed, plus a very tall tree next to it. They also removed the portion of the tree that hit the house. This needed a large crane, a police detail, etc.

The deal we made with the tree company was that we would pay $9k for the emergency work they did that day. This was a lot, but we live in an expensive area and didn't want to mess with our kids' safety during the rest of the storm. The tree company said they would put in a claim with our insurance for the part of the tree that hit the house. We asked for an itemized bill but never received one.

Fast forward a few weeks. I know the tree company has been in touch with the insurance company. We sent the insurer some pictures of the tree work as well. The insurance company then sends us a check, JUST FOR TREE REMOVAL for $19k. This is not for the deck or house, they have issued other checks for those issues.

This seems like a huge overpay. I don't want to make our rates skyrocket for no reason. Also, the tree company has not been in touch asking for this money, though it has only been about a week since the check was received.

I was under the impression our policy did not cover removal of a tree that has not yet hit the house. I cannot fathom that just removing about 10 feet of fallen tree with a crane costs 20k.

Would you get back in touch with the insurance company and suggest they reduce the payment? Contact the tree company asking for an itemized bill again? Treat this as reimbursement for the $9k already spent? Offer the 10k to the tree company?

EDIT: Appreciate the input all. For the record, we have worked with this tree company twice before so they weren’t entirely “random” but I hear you all on letting a company make their own claim. Having a tree fall on the house may have tainted my judgment in the moment. Live and learn I guess.

Claims Related Diminished Value Claim Offer

My 2021 BMW M440i xDrive was backed into on the right side. The car was previously accident-free and had 36,450 miles at the time of the accident. I had a BMW certified collision center make the repairs and the costs are outlined below:

Remove/Replace RT Door Shell: $1,574
Section RT Quarter Panel: $1,634
Other Parts: $1,232
Labor: $4,484
Misc + Paint: $2,388
Total Repair Costs: $11,312

The at-fault driver’s insurance, Farmers Insurance, is using Accurate DIV to handle the diminished value claim. Accurate DIV made me the offer below:

Repair Severity Score: 3.5/10
Pre-Loss Actual Cash Value: $45,025
Actual Post-Loss Value: $43,878
Diminished Value Offer: $1,147

Would you accept this offer or get a 3rd party diminished value appraisal? I am in the Indianapolis area and I’m seeing dealer listings below $40k for similar cars without any accidents reported.

Auto Insurance Leased vehicle was a total loss, GEICO paid the full amount to leasing company for vehicle, leasing company wants my $1,000 deductible paid to them

Is this normal? I am so confused as to why the finance company would have any responsibility in collecting my GEICO deductible, especially when the amount they wanted for the vehicle was paid fully by GEICO. They have me at a $1000 charge with a line item “insurance deductible”. They’re telling me this happens with every one of their total loss vehicles, that insurance companies pass the deductible on to them.

That makes no sense to me, why wouldn’t GEICO want that money, how are they able to try and claim it. On hold with GEICO now to ask, but it’s taking forever and figured I’d ask around if this is normal.

EDIT: thanks all for the clarification, GEICO finally answered and confirmed the same thing as you all. My confusion was that my adjuster originally told me the full amount they paid to my finance company was the full agreed upon amount, hence my confusion as to why they were collecting my $1k deductible on top of that. The reality was that they paid $1k less than the agreed upon amount, just as I’ve been told is likely here.

Insurance in Boston

Hi all,

I currently have a combination of anger, frustration and sadness at the same time...

I am a 26 yo man with clean driving record ever since I got my US driver's license in 2023, and being licensed from overseas since 2016... never a ticket, never an accident.

I got to the US and bought me a Dodge Challenger, went with Mapfre for insurance. EXPENSIVE! My adjuster said to me, people crashes these sports cars all the time, that's why insurances are high. Ok, lived with it.

I then sold the Challenger, bought me a Jeep Wrangler, MORE EXPENSIVE! My adjuster said to me, everybody gets these jeeps in New England because of the snow, so the higher the demand, the higher the quote... Ok. Lived with it again!

Now, I sold my Jeep, got myself a HONDA CIVIC, a car that EVERYBODY HAS, just trying to stay away of these fancy and weird brans to see if I could save some more money, not only on gas but also in insurance, and guess what? MORE EXPENSIVE!!!! My adjuster then said to me, it's because of how common thefts are, and also stability wise compared to the Jeep. And I said WHAT? How's a 2019 Jeep comparable to a 2024 Civic Touring? When the Jeep does not even have a speed sensor (being extra sarcastic there), and it wiggles around on highways, how can it be more safe to drive it than this newer car that has all these sensors and technology? The jeep does not even have a blind-spot sensor!!!!! I mean, come on!

My insurance has now gone up by a lot of money, again! How do people afford these hondas if they have to pay more than $5k a year on insurance? I need help!!!!!

Fired for cause, travelers insurance has questions.

I was fired for cause from an insurance agency 3 and half years ago. The gist is that my boss and I had a big fight and he fired me. Then in an effort to prevent me from filing unemployment, he submitted to the carrier that I was fired for cause “premium manipulation” he submitted 6 customer complaints that called in across a 12 months period of clients who were confused over minor billing things. I’m trying to get appointed with Travelers now and they are asking “Our information indicates you were terminated for cause in 2023. Please provide information and documentation related to that matter.”

What is the best way to explain this? Will they deny my appointment?

Ghost policy?

I’ve been trying and thought I had workers comp insurance, I paid for the policy. Only to find out four days later that it was never finalized. I talked to a guy I know in insurance today and he said something about a ghost policy, not real familiar with what that is, but it sounds like it may be one of my only options. I have a roofing business that I just started last month and a client has a huge commercial metal roof job for me, and I’ve got all the liability and other insurance with the company that said I was approved on the workers comp and they don’t have that figured out yet. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Am I good to cancel my car insurance after an accident last week so it doesn’t auto-renew in a few days?

My car is totaled and I’m not at fault. I just want to make sure I’m not paying extra if everything is all ready covered. I have another vehicle on the policy so that one will stay, but I would just be removing my main vehicle until I find another one. I’ll be out of work for a couple months most likely so every dollar counts.

Progressive/Snapshot phony discount

Progressive: So I paid 501.00 for a 6 month policy for my truck. Progressive insurance full coverage which included discounts due to having bundled with homeowners (which they increased as soon as I purchased) and motorcycle coverage. I agreed to put Snapshot in my truck to monitor my driving. I got an email saying congratulations you earned a 73.00 discount on your policy. So I expected to pay around 428.00 for 6 months at renewal. The truck and I are both 6 months older. I am retired and do not drive crazy, and use my vehicle for pleasure only. Even if premium increased a little, with the Snapshot discount it should still be less than original 501.00.

BUT NO. My renewal for the same coverage has increased to 674.00 for 6 months. A 173.00 increase or 346.00 more per year!!!! WTF. Progressive and Snapshot is just plain BS. I have no accidents, no tickets and supposedly a discount from the Snapshot monitor. Do not just blindly believe Progressive (or any company) at your renewal. They are a SCAM. I moved my coverage to another company. A major competitor of Progressive with the little green guy. Even though I now have no bundle discount, it's just my truck with them, the very same coverage, everything exactly the same, just for the truck I paid 388.00 for 6 months. That's a savings of 286.00 for 6 months. Again.....don't blindly renew any insurance. Shop it. All their promos are scams and they reel you in with an initial rate that seems good but if you are not vigilant they will try to screw you as soon as they can.

American Modern Insurance Classifying My Single-Wide as Multi-Wide — Anyone Else?

• Upvotes

I own a 1988 manufactured home in Massachusetts. My original home measures 72 × 14 feet and has a small attached, heated sunroom and an open deck.

My signed Purchase and Sales Agreement specifically describes the original home dimensions and lists the attached room separately.

However, my homeowners insurance company, American Modern, classifies my home as multi-wide rather than single-wide.

My neighbor has a similar single-wide with an attached heated sunroom and deck, plus a carport. Her home is insured through Foremost and is classified as single-wide.

I'm concerned that American Modern's classification might be affecting my insurance premium, coverage, or eligibility for replacement-cost insurance.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

  • Has American Modern or another insurer classified your single-wide with an addition as multi-wide?
  • Were you able to get the classification corrected?
  • Did correcting it lower your premium or change your coverage?
  • Did your insurance company explain why an attached room would change the classification?

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who's dealt with this, especially in Massachusetts.

Thanks!

Edit: Collision happend in Poland

MVC

I was driving and someone wasn’t looking and shot out of the left hand turn only lane into the straight lane striking my car as I passed. This person has no insurance and was driving someone else’s car who they believed also did not have insurance on it. She also had her kid in the car and had a restricted license requiring her to have a blow and go In her car which she did not.

I filed with my insurance to get the ball rolling on repairs and medical.
I was evaluated at the ER and discharged with flexril and lidocaine patches. They offered imaging but I had my two kids so I couldn’t do it at that time. I was then evaluated at urgent care as the pain was still there and really uncomfortable to sit for prolonged time or bend forward. They ordered a MRI which I had done today. It showed I had a herniated disc and an annular fissure. I have a follow up appointment later today to go over the MRI results and discuss a treatment plan. Is there anything I should be sharing my insurance? How do I go about this. I’m really distraught as the discomfort is still very much there

Is it worth making an insurance claim for a broken oil pan

I hit a rock with my 2018 Cruze and it cracked the oil pan. New pans run over $600 plus labor. My deductible is $500. Is it worth making a claim or am I better off just pulling it off and fixing it myself? I feel like my rates would go up more than I would come out ahead.

Health Insurance Insurance after having a baby

Hello! I am so sorry if this does not make sense - I have never (successfully) acquired my own insurance and I do not understand how these things work.

Details: I am 25, my husband is 27. I work/ed per-diem and he is full time (plus OT), neither of our jobs offer us health benefits. I got pregnant in February and immediately applied for Medicaid/wic and was denied for exceeding the income limits. I was told to apply through marketplace and when I did, I was also denied as it was no longer open enrollment. I was advised to apply again when I had the baby. I delivered my baby last week. Up until now, my provider has billed some appointments and others I had to pay upfront. I have a bill totaling under $4,000 for prenatal care right now.

My question is, can I buy health insurance for the 2026 year and will it backpay my prenatal care, help with delivery, cover newborn & postpartum care? Do I need to also purchase for the 2027 year to get coverage now?

Additionally, if I’m paying for health insurance myself, what kind of plan should I look for? Do I even need to have coverage? When I looked before, my husband and I are expected to pay $600 a month for a plan that still has $10k deductible (out of pocket max? These things do not make sense to me) I feel like it could make more sense for me to just pay the bills monthly or set aside that money for health expenses and write off the payments on our taxes. Which I also do not understand.

Any help on this would be appreciated. I feel like any time I’ve talked to a broker about it, it’s more about the sale than me understanding coverage. I will absolutely pay for the services, I just want to make sure it makes the most sense financially for my family.

Auto Insurance National General Insurance a SCAM?

I filed a Claim on 10/13/26 I was hit passenger side of my car and the person who hit me was uninsured. I called police and took record of all his information. I ended up getting in contact with my insurance (National General) and my adjuster called me next day. I was on the phone with him giving him detail about what happened in the accident and told him everything. After i gave him all the details about the accident he proceeds to ask me personal question's about where i live with who and so on. I then state my family members who i live with and then he tells me why i didn't declare them on my policy and i told him i was never asked or informed to do so. I told him I don't see why my household had anything to do with the accident when i was the driver who is insured with them and no one else was driving my car. I have full coverage with national general. I am also the registered owner of the car so I never understood why it had to be a big deal. I then get the adjuster to my house and they give me the whole break down of what it was going to cost to repair my car. The person who is taking care of my claim told me not to do anything thing until I was given a update. They sent me a letter of reservation of rights and I don't know what to do know As of now. 10/26/26 I am stuck waiting for answers/updates. My household members all have their own car and insurance policy's. Any recommendations or thought or ideas id highly appreciate it.

Auto Insurance Bundling auto with motorcycle

Good evening everyone,

I've had car insurance with USAA for about 6 years but its insanely pricey. I just bought a motorcycle and want to bundle insurance so I decided to shop around and get quotes, results have varied. So far I'm thinking about going with Geico since their quote is roughly 1/2 if not smaller than most other quotes I've gotten. Any clue why they're so cheap? Im wildly skeptical and paranoid & was hoping for some guidance on reputable insurances that bundle car and motorcycle that possibly include military discounts? Id appreciate the help. Thanks!

Car Insurance Arbitration

Location: Oregon

Location of Accident: Oregon
Location of our residence: California

Hi there,

We got rear ended at a stop light in Oregon while traveling in a rental car from Enterprise.

Long story short, both our insurance (Geico) and the other party’s insurance (Progressive) paid Enterprise. Enterprise is not giving back Progressive’s money and Geico is trying to get the money from Progressive. It sounds like Progressive is also refusing some of the fees Enterprise is charging.

It is our understanding that our insurance was suppose to pay Enterprise first and then go after the other party’s insurance to get the money so I am not even sure why the other party’s insurance paid Enterprise… and then the most confusing is how Enterprise can get double paid and refuse to pay back one of the insurance company’s money.

Anyways, we got a letter from our insurance saying that they are going to arbitration. What is the likely outcome? Will we be responsible for any of the costs?

Thank you in advance!

Should I take a commercial insurance job

I’m 23 and looking for some advice from people in the insurance industry.

I currently work at a small personal lines agency with about 5 employees. The biggest issue I’ve had is the lack of training, guidance, and structure. I’ve had to figure out a lot on my own, and I’m worried about my long-term growth here.

I recently got offered a job at a very small commercial insurance agency. There are 4 employees total, and they don’t have a physical office. The compensation is $2,000 per month plus 50% commission on new business and 25% on renewals. I’d also be responsible for doing a lot of my own prospecting.

I’m interested in commercial insurance and think it could be a great long-term career, but I’m worried I’ll end up in the same situation I’m in now, with little training or support and limited opportunities to grow.
On the other hand, I know smaller agencies can offer more responsibility and potentially more earning potential if you build a good book.

For those who have worked at small independent agencies or built a career in commercial insurance, what would you do in my position? Am I overthinking the size of the company, or are these legitimate red flags?

I’d appreciate honest advice, especially from people who have experience working at both small agencies and larger brokerages.

Auto Insurance Procrastinated on filing police report and claim following catalytic converter theft. Will I run into trouble?

I own two cars, and this is for the car that I rarely drive and was in fact planning on selling. When I discovered something was wrong with my car end of September, by that point I haven't driven that in a month. I made an appointment with a mobile mechanic a week after my discovery (yes i know i procrastinated here), and the mechanic arrived at my house last week and told me the cat theft is the cause of the noise. And only now did I file a report to police and auto insurance. This is the first time I've dealt with police and insurance so I'm kinda nervous here.
