Shortened links (a.co) (app.goo.gl) are automatically marked as spam & removed by Reddit.

As the title says, reddit's default spam filter is automatically removing comments with a shortened link.

This bears mentioning since product recommendations are commonplace in a lighting focused subreddit.

We can go through and manually approve these comments, but we won't always catch them.

Therefore, please ensure if you post a product link, it is a full weblink, and not a shortened link. For example:

Designer Thoughts Pendant light height over island: how high, how many and how far apart (kitchen island lighting guide)

I work in home lighting, and island pendants are the question I get most. Here is the short version. These rules cover pendant light height over island, spacing, and sizing for kitchen island lighting.

Height

  • Hang the bottom of the shade 30 to 36 inches above the countertop.
  • With high ceilings, keep that same gap. Choose a taller fixture instead of a longer drop.

How many

  • Island under 6 feet: 1 large pendant or 2 small ones.
  • 6 to 8 feet: 2 or 3 pendants.
  • Over 8 feet: 3 pendants, or one linear fixture.

Spacing

  • Leave about 24 to 30 inches between pendants, center to center.
  • Keep at least 6 inches between the end of the island and the edge of the outer shades.

Size

  • Add up the width of all shades. Keep that total under the island length minus 12 inches.

Light quality

  • Clear glass looks great but can glare. Frosted glass or a lower-lumen bulb fixes that.
  • 2700K to 3000K reads warm and works with most finishes. Put the pendants on a dimmer.

Finish

  • Match one other metal in the room, like the faucet or cabinet pulls. It does not need to match everything.

Happy to help if you share your island size and ceiling height.

Ich habe eine alte Deckenleuchte die man per Fernbedienung von Kaltweiß auf warmweiß umstellen kann.
Kann man die Lampe so modifizieren das es permanent warmweiß leuchtet und man keine Fernbedienung mehr braucht?

Need Design Advise Shopping for vanity and bathroom ceiling fixtures

• Upvotes

I'm shopping for some new bathroom light fixtures, using mostly Lumens and Lightology. What is the specification I should be looking at in order to understand how much light the fixture generates?

I want to make sure that in addition to liking the fixture, it will produce enough watts/lumens/whatever to function well.

Need Design Advise Thoughts on these two lights?

Trying to illuminate the front of my garage/driveway for security purposes. I’m liking these two lights. It seems like they’re the same but one is bigger.

https://a.co/d/06XC0qpf

120 W would be awesome, but I suspect it may be overkill. Apparently, you can limit the brightness when you need to, but I’m also concerned it would look ridiculous on my one car garage.

Would love to hear everybody’s thoughts.

Need Design Advise Wall Sconces Set Lighting

Thumbnail amazon.com

Hi All,

Not sure what to make the flair exactly, but I bought a pair of Wall Sconces that come with these LED pucks with a magnetic bottom for lighting control. Their batteries unfortunately last maybe 4 hours max and I am curious if anyone knows a brand or website of similar LED light bulb with remote control that would be a quality replacement? Skip to 4th image in link to see what I am referring to.

Thanks!

Need Design Advise Recessed lights in stairwell location

I’m putting in 2 recessed lights in the slanted ceiling to illuminate my treacherous stairwell.

The stairwell is:

Wall - 2.5 ft of stairs - 1.5 ft of gap (that goes doesn’t to the ground floor.

My plan is to center is over the stair treads; so 1.25 ft off the wall. Alternatively I could center it on the slanted ceiling which is 2.5 + 1.5 = 4 ft or 2ft off the wall.

Just want to confirm the typically placement is centered over the stairs treads.

Designer Thoughts How much gear do you think is in Amsterdam during ADE?

Random question, but does anyone have an idea of how much lighting and sound equipment is spread across Amsterdam during ADE?
I’m talking speakers, subs, moving heads, LED bars, lasers, the whole setup across all the clubs, warehouses and parties.
Does anyone have a rough estimate, or has anyone actually worked at events during ADE? Just curious about the sheer amount of gear that must be out there haha.
Probably millions of fixtures

Find Me This Fixture Floodlight height question

Most Lowe’s and Home Depot floodlights recommend being mounted at 8-10 feet high. Are there motion sensor floodlights that reliably work mounted 20-25 feet off the ground? I want to put floodlights under my roof eaves but want to make sure they reliably detect motion.

Do the box store lights work well with motion detection?

Need Design Advise My Lights Are Too Bright

I've moved into a new apartment and the ceiling lights are way too bright and way too white for me. I'm not allowed to change them or install any kind of dimmer. I do have a lamp, but I would like to be able to still use these lights occasionally. They have a diameter of 13 inches and the silver accent circle is something I can attach a magnet to.

Is there any kind of product out there that can dim and/or warm this light up? Something I can stick to it or the ceiling so that it doesn't hurt my eyes so much? Something that's also not going to be a fire hazard so the building lets me keep it.

Lighting Control How do I dim Lithonia LED Light externally ?

I have awful lighting in my kitchen and have been trying to figure how I could to dim the lights. My landlord said they don’t make those lightbulbs anymore. I was wondering if there are sheets anyone knows about to cover the exterior of the light to dim it and make it tolerable!

Product Review Testing those Great value LED party lights you see in Walmart

The pink and purple honestly look so similar (look at the SPD) you cannot really tell them apart unless they are side by side. The yellow is terrible for being yellow but is a nice variant of green imo.

I tested for flicker as well and found that they do at 120hz. The modulation depth isn’t high though; about as much a typical white LED.

Find Me This Fixture Looking for outdoor LED string lights that can be controlled VIA remote

Hello! I have been looking for reliable, preferably high quality, outdoor string lights that have a decent range of warm to cool range of whites, as well as have the ability to be controlled with a remote instead of a smartphone or app like many cheaper LED light strips. I am also looking for a string of lights that has individual bulbs that can be swapped if needed, or if not this, have a long lifespan and require very little maintenance. For color control, I am wanting to have the ability to choose up to maybe 3 alternating colors or be able to control the lights similar to how cheaper RGB LED light strips with remotes work.

The closest thing I can find are Govee outdoor string lights, but their system seems to require a phone app instead of a separate standalone remote. The application for the light strings I have cannot use WIFI control or a phone app and need to be controlled via a remote.

If anyone out there has any ideas let me know?

(if anyone knows of a light system like this that also has a solar charging and battery system built in, that would be preferred as well.)

Edit: Attached is an image of some desired presets I am looking to have while still being able to have flat warmer soft and cozy whites and amber light:

Need Design Advise Recessed lighting or flush mount for 8’ high hallway?

We’re redoing the lighting entirely in our hallway, and I’m wondering if there’s a general consensus on whether recessed or flush mount lighting makes a difference. It’s a modest hallway with 8’ high ceilings and about 40” wide, and with attic stairs and HVAC return in the ceiling there’s room for 2 small lights.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Need Design Advise What to do with these lamps

I'm on the fence on what to do with these two anglepoise lamps. I sort of want them both in a warm tone maybe a deep red green or orange. This is to fit around the general decor of our house.

But part of me thinks I should preserve them as antiques as much as I can and just take them a part clean them well and enjoy their original state.

I picked them both up for not much money and dont have plans to sell either on.

What are peoples thoughts? As you can probably see the 1227 is in far better condition than the 90.

Need Design Advise Need Wireless Switching Help Plus Recs for Under Cabinet Lighting Product

First off, great respect for the lighting designers in this sub.  I found this sub when looking for a wet-rated can light for a shower that also has a built -in blue tooth speaker. Since arriving at this sub, I have discovered that I have done a lot of things wrong in our renovation and now my elusive blue-tooth speaker shower light combo is the least of my concerns.
We recently purchased a home built in 2005 and are doing some renovations. My son-in-law is an electrician, and is doing my work for free (we are compensating him in other ways).  But he is an industrial electrician, so just tells me to order what I want. I can’t really count on him to make  recommendations for a residential setting because of his limited past experience on this side of things. I have identified a few areas where I need advice from the gurus in this sub.
Problem1) Newly installed hard-wired wall sconces - well the wiring for them anyway is in but I haven’t ordered fixtures yet. I was able to add a wall between my living and dining, so the sconces built into this wall have proper wall switches. There two sconces on the dining room side of the wall with their own wall switch, and two scones on the living room side with their own switch. However, I also had the wiring for additional sconces put in on other walls in the dining room, living room and also the adjoining foyer but none of these additional sconces is connected to any wall switch at all. This is due to insulation, blocking, attic restrictions, and other preexisting challenges. My original plan had been to order sconces that had an on -off switch directly on each fixture. But then I learned about wireless kinetic switching and wanted to explore that alternative. It would make it easier to turn everything on and off, plus I could also now have a dimming function, and more important I would have a wider selection of fixtures. I have gone down the rabbit hole and cannot figure out which is best for our situation: Lutron Caseta, www.RunLessWire.com, or https://pcswebstore.com/ or is there something better. I’m not looking for anything fancy here - I would just love to be able to turn on all the sconces in a particular room at the same time, and to be able to dim them simultaneously and evenly. To clarify: there are three sets of sconces:
Dining room: two sconces on a switch plus two more “detached” sconces on the adjacent wall.
Living Room: two sconces on a switch plus one more “detached” sconce on an opposite wall.
Foyer: two detached sconces on the same wall that I would like to function as one set.
Problem 2) The previous owners never installed under cabinet lighting in the kitchen. I would like to have my son-in-law install thin dimmable (dim-to-warm) LED lights along  the front of the underside of the uppers. There is an existing molding rail 1.5 inches deep along the bottom of the cabinets that could hide the lights. The problem is there are several breaks in the runs such as the sink and a doorway. Also a 60” stretch for the vent hood over the gas range - which I would like to have the same or similar continuous lighting as under the cabinets run underneath the front edge of the vent hood but I don’t know how to make sure those lights can stand up to the heat of the gas range. Anyway, last house I purchased lighting from Home Depot that  he installed but I had to turn on each cabinet light separately and they were too cool a color and non dimmable. Now that I have this new opportunity I’m just trying to do a better job while I have a chance.
I welcome any advice from the this group on how to handle the switching dilemma for the various rooms with sconces, and also recommendations of kitchen lights for under cabinet. I would like to add that I live in a fairly rural area and anticipate having to order whatever products are needed.
Thank you!
Edited for attempt at better clarity.

Find Me This Fixture Sweet cheezus...somebody help!

Post image

I'm just wondering if anybody is familiar with these types of light fixtures. One bulb on the inside is burned out and I cannot for the life of me find a way to open the stupid thing. The last place I lived had similar style lights and there was some latch inside that you pressed and then you would shift the light to the side and pull down. This has nothing like that. There is a small space between the light dome and the ceiling that does not show on the attached picture. However, I have tried to find a latch or something. Also the damn thing is precariously close to a sprinkler head, so I am extra cautious of knocking it. Cursing the builder/designer right now.

Apologies, as it is asking me to pick a flair. Sorry, there's no applicable flair that fits my question. I'm also posting this on r/help as well, but I figured the lighting experts might be more familiar with this type of fixture. Thanks.

Need Design Advise How would you do this

How would you install outside door garage lights on a 3 inch vinyl siding. Which mount and light. The logic is not there, or I suck at it, or it's just to outdated and have to rig it. Wish I can go back to the 90s lol

LED Strips Under Cabinet Lights - 4 Prong

Thumbnail

I have these under cabinet lights. I’m trying to order new ones. What style are these? I can’t find a make or model. They are attached to a light switch and take regular power. The bands look like microchips with leds on them. They are thin. They have 4 prongs and chain together.

I’d like to not have to reinstall a whole new system, just buy new light strips and install them.

Thanks in advance.

Need Design Advise Lighting Design - Pantry Underneath Staircase

Hey all! Trying to make the most out of our small pantry. I just added a few IKEA drawer cabinets and extended some our shelves. Still have to add finishing touches and repaint.

I’m looking to add lighting and would like feedback:
-thinking of expanding the single light to 3 individual gimbal lights marked in purple. Is this too much light? Any recommendations on brands?

-I’m looking at adding some discrete LED light strips and channels for the 3 lower shelves marked in purple. Any opinions? Should I add to all shelves above eye level?

-Anything else you would consider doing to maximize light and more storage.
