Discussion What made you come back to Firefox (or what makes you stay)?

Post image
885 Upvotes

Hi. While most people in this sub may not need to “come back” to Firefox at this point, I’m curious, what made you decide to come back to Firefox when you did? Or, if you’ve never left, what keeps you here?

For context, Firefox launched a "Come back to Firefox” campaign today, featuring several personalities you might recognize from the golden era of the internet, to remind us why it’s a great time for people to try Firefox again.

(Here’s the full video, also played during tonight's football game.)

https://reddit.com/link/1xfh2tu/video/c09s9kn03pxh1/player

The main point is that Firefox is still great and worth coming back to, addressing the desire for optional AI, data protections, and limitations to how many online ads people are fed as just a few reasons why. Today’s Firefox addresses all of this and more, and I know many of you have been around for the journey (thanks!).

For me: I used Firefox back in the early 2000s when it was added to our family computer. It’s where I remember first using Myspace. I came back to it when I learned more about their mission for a better internet and features that support it, and I stay (beyond my role here) for much of the same.

Switching from Chrome to Firefox takes a few minutes (passwords included)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Noticed some newcomers around lately (probably from the Come Back to Firefox ad) with questions about switching to Firefox (e.g.). Whether you’re coming back after a while or trying Firefox for the first time, this walkthrough is for you.

Short version: close Chrome, open Firefox, run the import. Mac passwords come along automatically. Windows and Linux need an additional step.

The basics

  1. Close Chrome completely.
  2. Open Firefox. The import tool may appear on first launch. If it doesn’t, go to Settings and click Import Data under “Import browser data.”
  3. Choose Chrome and your profile, then click + to pick what to bring over: passwords, bookmarks, history, extensions, autofill.
  4. Click Import, then Done.

Nothing is removed from Chrome, so you can keep using it while you settle in.

Passwords

  • Mac: already included in the steps above.
  • Windows and Linux:
    1. In Chrome, go to Passwords and Autofill > Google Passwords Manager > Settings > Export passwords and save the CSV.
    2. In Firefox, open the same import wizard and choose Passwords from CSV file.
    3. Delete the CSV afterward. It’s unencrypted.

After the import

  • Extensions: they’re matched to comparable Firefox versions, not copied. Finalize them from the Firefox menu. Not every Chrome extension has a match.
  • Bookmarks missing? They’re probably on the Bookmarks Toolbar, which may be hidden. Menu > More Tools > Customize Toolbar > Toolbars > Bookmarks Toolbar.

What doesn’t come over

  • Payment methods can’t be imported from Chrome on Windows.

Full walkthrough in this support article. If something doesn’t work, feel free to drop it in the comments. There are a lot of experienced Firefox-users in this sub who can help.

💻 Help "Close" button on tabs?? Where has it gone?

I used to be able to close tabs using a the standard little "x" icon on each tab. Now its gone.

That means I have to click on the tab to close it.

That means I have to wait until the page is entirely reloaded.

On a cellular internet connection - or any connection that isn't always highspeed - that's a real pain in the ass.

WTF, Firefox?

💻 Help PDF opened in Firefox save always as document.pdf

The new PDF viewer is fine and all, but there is one bug with it that needs to be addressed and the sooner the better. As I wrote in the title, if I open PDF in the new viewer and try to download it, it always uses the name "document.pdf". Right click on the PDF and choosing Save page as has the same result. The only workaround I found so far is to go back to the page that linked said PDF, right click the link and choose Save as. That is the only way to save PDF under its proper name. And that's very annoying. This really needs to be fixed.

💻 Help Severe Keyboard Lag on Reddit

Whenever I'm on Reddit on the desktop, typing into the comments field or the body of this posts is very difficult because the UI and cursor are about 0.25-0.5 seconds behind my actual keystrokes. Oddly enough, I can type into the title of this post with no lag, but the body is very laggy. Switching to markdown mode does seem to fix the lag, but I like to be able to format text, generally.

This seems to have started within the last week or so. I'm running FireFox 159 on Windows 26H2. Installed extensions are UBlock Origin, iCloud Passwords, and iCloud Bookmarks.

Solved I see duplicate listings of Firefox under Settings, Default Apps (solution included)

I originally wrote this for a friend. Here is what I wrote with minor modifications. I hope everyone finds it useful because I saw similar requests on the Firefox support forum.

Problem

A user opens the "Default Apps" section of Windows Settings and clicks on "Set defaults by apps", only to find two Firefox entries in the list. Why?

Solution

The Firefox installer may register itself twice with the system, once under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and a second time under HKEY_CURRENT_USER:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\RegisteredApplications]
"Firefox-308046B0AF4A39CB"="Software\\Clients\\StartMenuInternet\\Firefox-308046B0AF4A39CB\\Capabilities"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\RegisteredApplications]
"Firefox-308046B0AF4A39CB"="Software\\Clients\\StartMenuInternet\\Firefox-308046B0AF4A39CB\\Capabilities"

Delete the right key (NOT both). If Firefox is installed for the entire machine, delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USER entry once for every user. If Firefox is installed for one user only, delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE one (needs admin privileges).

Further reading

Firefox may have duplicate registration data under:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet\ (e.g., as Firefox-308046B0AF4A39CB)
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet\ (e.g., as Firefox-308046B0AF4A39CB)

Again, delete the right one, although these don't contribute to the problem mentioned above.

Container tabs fix in Nova, inspired by Brave Browser

Post image
20 Upvotes

The new vertical tabs design in Nova looks horrible with the container tabs. Thanks to Claude AI (!!), I made this code for the userChrome.css file that give a design inspired by the container tabs feature in Brave Browser.

How to :

  • In about:config, set toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets to true.
  • In about:support, on the “Profile Folder” line, click “Open Folder.”
  • Create a “chrome” folder in that directory, then create a “userChrome.css” file inside the “chrome” folder.
  • Restart Firefox after each change to the file.

UPDATE 2026-10-27 : Code updated for better pinned container tabs.

💻 Help File upload bug still affecting about:debugging even on 159

So it seems the 157 issue of not remembering upload locations was fixed in 159 just now as discussed in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2077656 but it looks like it's still not been resolved for the about:debugging page when loading temporary add-ons?

It still does the incorrect behavior that started in 157 of looking at the most recent upload location instead of where it was uploaded from last. Was wondering if anyone else has tested this behavior after updating.

💻 Help is there a way to open multiple tabs without loading the sites?

If one keeps the tabs in a session and closes and reopen the browser, firefox will not contact and download those sites until the user opens the specific tab.

But if the sites are saved in bookmarks or history, and the user opens multiple, the sites will load. This will often cause a 429 error because sites don't wanna be bombarded by requests, rightly so.

So, is there a way to put bookmarked sites into the tab bar but without loading the sites?

💻 Help firefox crashing when using proton vpn

This has been going on for a few months now and its making want to switch back to chrome. Theres about a 20% chance when connecting to proton vpn that firefox will buffer and stall (forever) until i close and reopen it which makes the pop up appear "an instance is already open do you want to close" and so i have to close it on that pop up before opening it again. Then sometimes it works but other times all my tabs are blank and gone and dont appear in history so they are just gone.

I live in the UK so i kinda have to use a vpn for a good amount of sites. Is this just an issue between firefox and proton or is there something i can do to fix it?
