Hi everyone!
I just got accepted into a Game Development degree and would love to get some input from people who have experience or are currently developing games on Mac for various platforms.
For my birthday, I was gifted a MacBook Pro with the base M5 chip, 1TB SSD, and 24GB of RAM. However, from what I've heard, game development on Macs is pure hell and they are completely unsuited for it, or at least they fall so far short of Windows systems that they aren't worth all the troubles.
To be clear, I'm not talking about 2D games in Godot — I completely understand those can be made even on a phone. I'm talking primarily about 3D, Low Poly, and medium-quality graphics around the level of PS3/Switch 1/2 or games like Sable,Journey, Abzu, Another Crab’s Treasure, Subnautica, Inside, Little Nightmares, Sonic Frontiers, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Ratchet and Clank, and Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug Wars.
I would like to know:
Unreal Engine: Is the experience of creating games on Unreal on a Mac really that bad and clunky ?
Unity: If I choose Unity instead of Unreal, how will things look when it comes to releasing games for sale? I heard about the scandal with the price increases a couple of years ago, where developers were forced to urgently move their projects to other engines and run away from it. But that was a couple of years ago, and I don't know the current state of affairs in the market. And also how is it performs on Mac OS?
Godot: Speaking of 3D development in Godot, how limited would I be in my actions on macOS? Considering that the only game with really decent 3D graphics developed on Godot seems to be Road To Vostok. However, I’ll be glad to be wrong.
Another issue is the difficulty of gaining any meaningful gaming experience on macOS, aside from native ports—which is a crucial aspect for a game developer. I have extensive, multi-year experience using CrossOver across various generations of MacBooks, and, frankly, it has almost always been a terrible experience—even today. Even with my current new MacBook - If a game manages to launch at all, it runs on the lowest settings at a dismal resolution (below 1080p), with annoying latency, and frequently suffers from audio issues and crashes— that if I trying to play at 60 FPS using a mouse and keyboard. Consequently, I unfortunately cannot share the general optimism surrounding this software at all.
Another thing to be mentioned, that I'm already encountering limitations regarding the use of GraphicsGale and Visual Studio Code during my university studies. I find Aseprite terribly inconvenient to use, especially when everyone else uses the first one. That's why I started wondering if I might be making a mistake by looking for workarounds to get all this up and running. Furthermore, one professor claims that a Mac is completely unsuitable for game development, while another strongly recommends one-especially for working with Blender.
Overall, I'm in a bit of a dilemma. My choice right now is either to sell this Mac and buy myself a gaming laptop with an RTX 4050, Ryzen 5, and 16GB of RAM (since my maximum budget caps out at €850), or to relax and prepare for workarounds and future headaches during development.
Thank you all so much in advance for your time and valuable advice, dear friends! I really appreciate it.
Wishing everyone a great day!
