Discussion 💬 We should see other people

I am a kayin girl living overseas now. Managed to get refugee status. Came onto this reddit not long ago. I find some of the positions quite problematic.

Burmese sarongs and dance worn in Thai show? Protest! Petition! Myanmar culture is important!
BUT Ethnic languages banned and ethnic history and culture not taught in state schools? That is ok. No need to protest. They should all just speak bamar. Myanmar history is just bamar history.

Cannot judge all bamar by actions of a few. MAH and Tat is not representative of all Bamar. Must judge on individual action.
BUT Can judge all ethnic groups by their rebel groups. Kayin are all KNU and Kachin are all KIA. Rohingya are all rapists and murderers.

Loud protests and CDM when Tat harms bamar civilians.
BUT No noise when tat is burning ethnic villages and raping ethnic girls. Cheers tat on when killing rohingyas

Kachins, Kayins not trustworthy because they worked with the British. Anyone working with outsiders is a threat.
BUT 30 comrades and BIA are heroes for working with Japanese outsiders and clever for switching to working with the British. That is perfectly fine and clever.

Kayins who never signed Panglong agreement and pushing for independence – Rebels who want to destroy the union and betraying the spirit of the agreement.
BUT Tat overthrows civilian government and uses the four cuts strategy to harm ethnic groups – perfectly acceptable since ethnic groups are all rebels.

Ethnic groups refuse to accept Bamar-dominated central rule? They are destroying democracy and the Union.
BUT Tat refuses to accept the election result and overthrows the elected government? It is saving the Union. Apparently, the people's mandate matters until it produces a result the military does not like.

Bemoans other countries for not accepting Myanmar passports and deporting myanmar illegal immigrants. Speaks of need for compassion and understanding.
BUT there is support when tat Tries to remove entire ethnic groups because they don’t appear on a list of approved groups. No need for compassion here.

My kin has been attacked in their villages since 1942 with the BIA invaded. Kayins never signed the panglong agreement but people make it look like we break our promise. Ne Win takes over and destroy our language, culture and our crops. They bomb from the air and rape our women.

Kayin people only appear on postcards and calendars. Our history and culture are missing from school textbooks. We left only without cute ethnic attires that Burmese girls cosplay with for TT likes.

I really don’t see why any ethnic group would want to stay in this union. We owe this union nothing. Promises of federalism and autonomy were never kept and all we get are more lies bloodshed and suffering.

Even if the Kachin in China and Kayin in Thailand also lack political power, at least they are not being bombed from the air and being raped by tat soldiers.

Edit: downvote if you want. This is the truth to me. If you grew up like i did and lived my life, always in fear until we crossed the border and found safety and refuge, you may understand.

Tourism 🧳 Underground electronic music in Yangon?

I am in Yangon until 15 November and wondering if there is an underground electronic music scene beyond the usual advertised events. Mostly interested in techno, house, minimal, and similar sounds, rather than commercial EDM or hardstyle.

Any smaller options worth checking out?

Discussion 💬 The driving habits here are actually insane

I moved to Taunggyi from Yangon a few years ago. One thing I've been raging about is the driving culture here.

I don’t want to generalize "people from Taunggyi" since ik so many ppl have moved here from all over the place in recent years but this is insane.

No indicators, parking in places that block traffic flow or your view when trying to take a turn safely, and motorbikes make it so much more stressful. WAY TOO MANY riders cut in front of cars without signaling.

Does anyone else living here feel the same way?

News 📰 There is a Burmese athlete playing well at Denso Airybees, a club in the Japanese women’s top division volleyball league. Her name is Yee Mon Myat, born and raised in Tokyo to a Rakhine dad and Bamar mom. Still only 19, she’s 5’10 and already a key player for her team. Incredible 👏🏾

The Japanese women’s top division volleyball league is among the top three women’s volleyball leagues in the world. So it’s amazing to see Yee Mon Myat excelling there despite still being a teenager.

She is playing at the world class level in her sport, and she’s not even close to her prime yet.

Volleyball is a popular and competitive sport in Japan. The Japanese women’s national team is currently ranked sixth in the world out of 122 countries.

On the other hand, Myanmar women’s national volleyball team currently has NR (not ranked) status in world rankings since they haven’t been active in so long.

Advice International shipping to Myanmar?

Hello. I'm gonna have to receive a package from Canada to here. I'd like to know what shipping options are out there. I looked into DHL but turns out these guys are fast at cost of being super expensive (this isn't only to Myanmar. Even for nearer countries, they're still expensive as hell). Please help out

Advice

Advice Is this good to take without prescription?

Post image

My mood is really really bad these days. But ,today I went out and bought gift for my parents for Thadingyut. And I saw this medicine and bought it thinking "why not". I took 2 pills today and my mood really improved. I don't know it is placebo effect or just medicine doing its job.And I am planning to take it every day. But I was wondering is it okay to take it without prescription? And Is there other similar kind of medicine that work well on depression and ADHD? I don't want to go see psychiatrist.

Discussion 💬 Burmese Telegram is the most active, the most copied and the least read of all big languages (TGscope data)

Post image
17 Upvotes

TGscope tracks public Telegram channels, about 3 million of them, and Burmese stands out on almost every measure.

It's the most active language. 70.5% of Burmese channels posted something in the last month, more than any other big language. Russian is at 56%, English at 41%.

It's also the most copied. 45% of Burmese posts appear word for word in at least one other channel. For English it's 10%, for Russian 9%.

A lot of channels are sold together. 26.5% of Burmese channels with 10k+ subscribers list the same ad contact as at least four other channels, again the highest of any language.

But readers don't see much of it. A typical post in a Burmese channel with 10k to 100k subscribers is seen by about 3% of subscribers, the lowest of the 11 languages measured. About 40% of those channels reach fewer than 1 in 50 subscribers.

A couple more numbers: Burmese has as many channels with 10k+ subscribers as French (about 1,650), and the most common topics are humour (47%) and film and TV (37%).

Does this match what you see? My guess is lots of movie and meme channels reposting the same stuff
