the Singularity is HERE OpenAI says its AI invented a new mathematical technique to solve a 35-year-old mystery about how waves focus, then used the breakthrough to crack several other decades-old problems involving how waves overlap, how signals can be reconstructed, and the geometry of space.

LLM News Mirendil announces Fern v0.1: Their first model with a 10M context window
They claim it was created with a single researcher and under $10 million spent on the model. Theyve only said that it is somewhere between 0.1 and 0.5T parameters in size. Benchmarks aren't super impressive, but they claim this is just the first very early checkpoint and that they also have two much larger models undergoing training right now.

Discussion Anthropic and OpenAI are holding back their best models
Currently OpenAI and Anthropic are holding back their best models. I expect maybe one more big release from both this year and that’s it. Expect next year we go months before anything other than small stuff. They’re gonna RSI inside the labs to super intelligence.
Any big leaps just be prepared for the job market to be shaken at each release at this point. Anyone I talk today no longer says it’s hype or bs the job impact is coming and nobody that says it’s not, is lying.
Cheap models can be even more impactful on the job situation than Astra or Fable. Cheap models that are powerful can seriously gut the job market. 2027/2028 is gonna be a hell of a time to be a white collar employee. I’d highly recommend having an emergency fund setup to help you through this transition and hopefully some sort of UBI is setup quickly. Get out of debt.
I’m very optimistic about the future and am bullish on Ai but the job prospects are quite concerning in the short term.

AI what's next after smartphones
every big device had a successor. mainframes, desktops, laptops, phones. so something presumably comes after the phone.
but i can't tell what it is. glasses, something on your wrist, something you just talk to. each one has a catch.
so yeah, what's your guess? and what would the catch be?

Ethics & Philosophy Are we living in the golden age of AI intellectual freedom before corporations ruin it, like they did the internet?
Right now, AI can introduce anyone curious enough to Jung, Nietzsche, philosophy, psychology, and ideas they might never have encountered otherwise. You can question everything, explore for hours, and sometimes understand yourself a little better. It's almost like having a Tibetan monk with an enormous library available 24/7. Perhaps not wise, but incredibly knowledgeable and patient.
That's an extraordinary power to give ordinary people. But was this ever intentional, or just a side effect of young AI?
Remember the first internet at 2000s: An enormous, open world of discovery before it became a handful of corporate platforms, advertising machines, and walled gardens. I suspect AI was never meant to be this intellectually liberating either. Will its owners eventually decide which philosophical ideas and uncomfortable perspectives we're allowed to explore? I suspect "safety guardrails" will eventually be used to censor the shit out of AI in the name of public health or some other supposed public good. Are we experiencing a temporary golden age of AI intellectual freedom without even realizing it?

Biotech/Longevity One of the most common items on people's post-singularity wishlist is a cure for tinnitus, and I totally get it
One of the most common things I see mentioned on this and other subreddits when people are asked what they are most looking forward to AI achieving, is, as you'd expect, medical advancements - but one condition pops up so frequently that I couldn't help but notice: tinnitus.
I'm a doctor and I work in clinical trials, I also suffer from tinnitus, and something that has genuinely shocked me is how little progress medicine has made with so many common, debilitating conditions, including this one. About 10% of the global population will at some point suffer from prolonged or permanent tinnitus, so the need is there, which means the money is there, but to date there is essentially nothing human medicine has ever devised that has any meaningful ability to treat it.
The anti-AI crowd really need to understand that there is a limit to what human intelligence alone can achieve and in many areas of dire need, we are already close to that limit. Tinnitus is by far from the most important of those, but a good example of it.
We've made huge advances in treating certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases which has made the progress of medicine appear dramatic, and those are of course very meaningful, but that "spikey human intelligence" hides the fact that we can do basically nothing for a high percentage of horrible conditions out there. Something as widespread and distressing as tinnitus remains essentially untreatable at its biological source despite decades of research. Similarly other obviously much more serious neurological disorders like ALS have seen essentially zero progress in 50 years of modern medicine - if you are diagnosed with ALS today, your life expectancy is likely at most a few months longer than if you had been diagnosed before the internet even existed.
I increasingly believe these problems are simply too complex to ever be solved with human minds in any reasonable amount of time, as in, not only not within our lifetime, but potentially many human lifetimes, or potentially ever.
Tinnitus is a good example because despite being so common we still don't full understand the neural mechanisms generating it. The complexity of the systems involved in generating it mean we have been effectively trying to manually piece together a handful of jigsaw pieces on a 3 dimensional jigsaw puzzle of a few billion pieces to even understand how it occurs. No number of humans with classical computing can effectively model this level of complexity.
To all my fellow tinnitus sufferers I feel your pain and it's one of the things I most look forward to seeing major progress in, along with all the other neurological conditions out there that have seen close to zero progress throughout the entire history of modern medicine.
For anyone struggling with tinnitus who wants to help advance research, I'd encourage contacting groups such as the Bionics Institute, Newcastle tinnitus researchers or Tinnitus UK to ask about participating in studies. There is also a major European research initiative called UNITI which has explicitly pursued ML-based tinnitus subtyping and personalised treatment selection using large multicentre datasets. Now is the time AI is being implemented in these studies so now is the time they need volunteers more than ever.
