Question About to give up on a 1,225 day Duo streak, what else is out there that is more "immersive"?

I've been doing duo for a long time. But sadly it became more about "getting the streak" than quality of learning. I want to take on a more learn through things I'd normally do, type of approach vs having to put special time aside for "lessons".

So I've dabbled a bit in reading easy short stories, but I haven't had great success in getting it to stick, I find I need solid blocks of uninterrupted time to properly digest it. And I've done some podcasts whilst I drive. And Similarly not great As I'll get distracted with the driving bit and had zoned out on 15 mins. What I'm hoping for is an Audio and Visual at the same time. Think shows with subtitles type of approach but maybe more interactive?

I've seen a few other apps that seem to offer these things, but in the age of Vibe coded slop I'm a bit cautious of scammy trash. Just looking for recommendations on what other people are currently using that isn't Duo lingo and how you have found it. I'm vaguely an A2 Level but with some weird gaps.

Discussion What is "Navi" short for?

A discussion has come up with my friends and me, all of which are native German speakers, and apparently my family is the only one saying "der Navi" as in "der Navigator" for the thing in the car giving you instructions on where to drive. The others say "das Navi" as in "das Navigationssystem". Even the Duden says "das Navi" only. So I'm now wondering if my family is really that unique in that and if you have found other examples of different articles because of disagreements on what something is short for. Is there maybe someone out there saying "die Navi"?

Question Any affordable online resources to learn?

I used to study german in smartergerman plateform if anyone knows about it. It had a scholarship offer so I only paid around 1€/month and I really enjoyed it. I'm at around A2 and B1. The plateform just announced that the scholarship program was gonna end soon, so I won't be able to afford it anymore. I tried the free options on youtube and Nicos weg and all the free german learning things but it didn't feel structured enough to me.

Does anyone know an affordable program online to learn german?

Question German Learning for Kid

Hi All,

I have moved to Germany 1 and half years back. My son is in 3rd grade and is in German state schools. He has advanced in German well in the past year. But still would like to enroll with some german tutor now. Are private tutoring schools like Schulerhilfe good ? Or should i put him with some online tutor ?

I basically wanted to put him into some offline classes so was looking into Schulerhilfe.

It would be also great if you can let me know average per hour charges for German learning ?

Vielen Dank!

Meta Stop spreading the wrong stance that the short form of a word has the same gender as the long form!

Don't say it's "das Navi" because it's derived from "das Navigationssystem" and so on.

Because it's "das Foto" and it's derived from "die Forografie" !

Discussion British-German Association

Has anyone on here joined the British-German Association?

I'm learning German and working towards studying German at university, with the aim of eventually moving there.

I have a massive soft spot for Germany and would love to connect with people who feel the same way, while learning more.

Question My English-speaking coworkers can’t accept that “die Brille” is one thing

Some of my Aussie and British coworkers are learning German too, on Duolingo and Busuu. At lunch, one of them said “Ich habe meine Brillen vergessen”, and when I said “meine Brille”, singular, he refused. “There are two lenses, mate.”

“Die Hose” made it worse, since in German he’s wearing one trouser. He didn’t take it well either.

“Brille” comes from “Beryll”, the stone early lenses were made of. Dutch keeps bril and broek singular, while Polish makes okulary and spodnie plural like English, so my head runs both systems at once. Praktika doesn’t always catch me saying “meine Hosen”.

Are there other German words like this that trip up English speakers, or are these the main ones?

Question Too old for Goethe Institut study?

I’m interested in taking a 3-week intensive German language course at the Goethe Institut in Göttingen and wondering if I’ll feel out of place at age 70?

Forty-five years ago I lived and worked in Osnabrück for 18 months without hearing a word of English.  When I left, I was completely fluent.   Germans would ask if I were Dutch when I spoke.

I hate to lose such hard-earned facility in German, but after 45 years of not using the language I test out now at a B1/B2 range.

Now that I’m retired I have the time and money to go back to Germany and try to recapture my youth and German language skills.  When you get to my age, you always view yourself a lot younger than do others.

Just wondering how I’d fit in at an intensive Goethe course where I’m looking to just immerse myself in German and study for the 3 weeks . . . ?

Question Is this an actual accent or just a personal stylistic choice?

I'm a beginner, and came across this video. The "R" seems very dramatic, notably on "Gemerkt", the second time he says "Lernen", and "Rassismus". Like I said, I'm a beginner, so I'm ignorant of accents/dialects. Is he just putting it on for effect or is this an actual way of pronouncing the "R" sound?

Question Advice for Listening/Reading Exam

Hallo!!

I’m an Honors German 3 student, and I’d say I’m relatively close to the top of my class.

However, I consistently struggle with reading and listening assessments, usually scoring around 70–80%.

With listening, I have a hard time processing the audio quickly enough to catch and write down the information I hear. With reading, I struggle to understand the passages well enough to answer the questions accurately.

I know I understand a decent amount of German, so I’m frustrated that I can’t seem to translate that knowledge into stronger test scores.

Does anyone have any tips, strategies, or practice methods that could help me improve in these two areas?

Vielen Dank!
