Meta Want to Talk German With Me? R/German's one (and only!) official language exchange thread

Instead of the many "looking for speaking partner" posts that have been cluttering the sub, here's the brand new official "I am looking for people to talk in German with" thread!

It will from now on be mandatory to put all language exchange requests here. Individual posts will be deleted.

Things to include in your comment:

• Native/main language
• German language level
• Means of communication
• Expectations from potential learning partners (optional)

Make it nice and KISS (keep it simple & stupid). This is NOT a dating platform, anything in this sense will get you banned.

You are free to comment with a new request once a week.

Question My English-speaking coworkers can’t accept that “die Brille” is one thing

Some of my Aussie and British coworkers are learning German too, on Duolingo and Busuu. At lunch, one of them said “Ich habe meine Brillen vergessen”, and when I said “meine Brille”, singular, he refused. “There are two lenses, mate.”

“Die Hose” made it worse, since in German he’s wearing one trouser. He didn’t take it well either.

“Brille” comes from “Beryll”, the stone early lenses were made of. Dutch keeps bril and broek singular, while Polish makes okulary and spodnie plural like English, so my head runs both systems at once. Praktika doesn’t always catch me saying “meine Hosen”.

Are there other German words like this that trip up English speakers, or are these the main ones?

Question Too old for Goethe Institut study?

I’m interested in taking a 3-week intensive German language course at the Goethe Institut in Göttingen and wondering if I’ll feel out of place at age 70?

Forty-five years ago I lived and worked in Osnabrück for 18 months without hearing a word of English.  When I left, I was completely fluent.   Germans would ask if I were Dutch when I spoke.

I hate to lose such hard-earned facility in German, but after 45 years of not using the language I test out now at a B1/B2 range.

Now that I’m retired I have the time and money to go back to Germany and try to recapture my youth and German language skills.  When you get to my age, you always view yourself a lot younger than do others.

Just wondering how I’d fit in at an intensive Goethe course where I’m looking to just immerse myself in German and study for the 3 weeks . . . ?

Discussion What is "Navi" short for?

• Upvotes

A discussion has come up with my friends and me, all of which are native German speakers, and apparently my family is the only one saying "der Navi" as in "der Navigator" for the thing in the car giving you instructions on where to drive. The others say "das Navi" as in "das Navigationssystem". Even the Duden says "das Navi" only. So I'm now wondering if my family is really that unique in that and if you have found other examples of different articles because of disagreements on what something is short for. Is there maybe someone out there saying "die Navi"?

Vielen Dank!

Question German Learning for Kid

• Upvotes

Hi All,

I have moved to Germany 1 and half years back. My son is in 3rd grade and is in German state schools. He has advanced in German well in the past year. But still would like to enroll with some german tutor now. Are private tutoring schools like Schulerhilfe good ? Or should i put him with some online tutor ?

I basically wanted to put him into some offline classes so was looking into Schulerhilfe.

It would be also great if you can let me know average per hour charges for German learning ?

Discussion How I Passed the TELC B1 Exam in Less Than a Month While Working Full-Time and Raising Two Kids

A few weeks ago, I was preparing for my TELC B1 exam. I work full-time as a software developer, have two young kids, and honestly, finding time to study was probably harder than studying German itself 😅

I had less than a month to prepare, so I had to be really careful with how I used my time.

Here's what worked for me.

1. Goethe's online B1 course

I bought the Goethe-Institut B1 online course during a promotion for €99. It's around 72 hours of material, but I managed to finish it in two weeks.

The funny thing is that I studied with Goethe but took the TELC exam 😂

I found the course really useful for building my grammar and vocabulary. It's also well structured, which helped a lot with self-study.

2. ChatGPT became my study partner

This was probably one of the most useful things I did.

I created separate ChatGPT conversations for Lesen, Hören, Sprachbausteine, Schreiben, and Sprechen.

Every day, I'd practice exercises, submit my answers, and ask it to explain my mistakes.

For Schreiben, I wrote so many emails that at some point I felt like I was working in customer support.

3. Easy German on YouTube

I watched videos from Easy German's B1 playlist almost every day.

Sometimes while having lunch, sometimes in the evening. It helped me get used to listening to German without feeling like I was studying all the time.

4. Speaking practice using my own life

Instead of memorizing random sentences, I asked ChatGPT to create speaking examples based on my actual life: my family, job, hobbies, daily routine, etc.

Then I practiced them using voice conversations.

This made a big difference for me because I wasn't trying to remember someone else's story during the exam. I was just talking about my own life.

5. Mock exams, mock exams, mock exams

During the final days, I focused much more on practicing the exam format than learning new grammar.

I wanted to know what each task looked like, how much time I had, and where I was making mistakes.

I eventually took the digital TELC B1 exam. Being able to type my writing answers instead of handwriting them was something I personally appreciated.

Looking back, I think the biggest lesson was that I didn't need to study everything. I needed to focus on what I was actually struggling with.

Question Any affordable online resources to learn?

I used to study german in smartergerman plateform if anyone knows about it. It had a scholarship offer so I only paid around 1€/month and I really enjoyed it. I'm at around A2 and B1. The plateform just announced that the scholarship program was gonna end soon, so I won't be able to afford it anymore. I tried the free options on youtube and Nicos weg and all the free german learning things but it didn't feel structured enough to me.

Does anyone know an affordable program online to learn german?

Question Gassigehenvergnügen ?

My wife is taking a German class. Because she's the world's best spouse, she tolerates my joking attempts to speak German to her, which consist mostly of "Ja meine Frau!" As we were walking the dogs, we got into a silly discussion of elaborate German compounds that we could make that would relate to walking the dogs. Since the other half of my German vocabulary comes from the old VW commercial, I came up with Gassigehenvergnügen. However, even my wife, who actually knows some German now, was uncertain whether this was theoretically the correct way to plug the words together. Can anyone tell me if this is right? Thanks in advance for your contribution to marital humor.

Question Aussprache

Servus an alle Muttersprachler! 😊 Helfts eurem österreichischen Hawara! Wie sprechts ihr die beiden Namen aus?

Besonders interessieren mich folgende Fragen:

Request I cannot seem to understand this

I'm struggling though German grammar rules and I keep getting this wrong.

Can someone help me understand why the word order changes here;

  1. Ich brauche eine stift.
  2. brauche ich beide briefmarken.

I can't seem to make sense of it.

Its seems to me that both "eine" and "beide" hold a similar grammatical placement but seemingly one changes the order of the first two words?

Question "As you say"

Hey guys, how would I say "what they would call/some might say" etc and where would I put it in the sentence? Example: "I am, what people would call, a real idiot." Or "I am, how do you say, a real idiot." Slightly comedic in English, not sure it translates? Danke 🖤🖤🖤

Question Learning German as a dummy with a test that’s tomorrow B1😐

So I’m from the USA , and obviously as kids we all learn in our native language in kindergarten about nouns and the alphabet n all that. I have failed the B1 test TWICE and obviously not proud of that, I studied my butt off everyday learning grammar and I scored a 24.5/30. Which I was proud of but DIKTAT was not good, HEARING was not good and finally the WRITING part wasn’t good either. Neither the READING part.

My problem is not knowing MANY words. I am studying vocabulary and I’m just nervous honestly.

Do any of you have tips? “Study” yeahhhh I GET IT but any OTHER tips any tips that has helped you? I’m a really LOW iq person and yes ik “Americans 🙄” so I would really appreciate the tips any of you would give!

Also test is tomorrow :/

Question How can I improve my German speaking and remember vocabulary?

I took my B1 exam and am now trying to learn B2 German. My problem is that I recognise and understand words when reading, but when I try to speak, I can’t remember them.

Has anyone experienced this? Are there any websites, apps, or methods that helped you turn passive vocabulary into active vocabulary and speak more confidently?

Question Any tip/focused drill to reduce article and conjugation errors when speaking 1 month before Telc C1 HS?

At this point I'm pretty confident that I'll pass the writing part, but the speaking part worries me, since I heard that such errors are significantly penalised. When I try to speak, I make quite a lot of article (der/die/das) and conjugation (weil du ... betreffen instead of betriffst/ zwingen bist instead of gezwungen bist) errors. I noticed that it occurs more with Nebensatz, where I essentially forget the subject at the end of the sentence. Is there any way to correct this quickly, besides just talking freely by myself and a few hours per week at speaking group?

I essentially learn German full-time at this point until the exam day if that helps, and it doesn't need to be any specific score, just passing is enough.

Request What's the best Anki deck for beginners (A1)?

Hey everyone! I'm trying to learn German using the refold method and I was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for Anki decks of the 100 most common words that include articles before the nouns, audio and example sentences? I've found these two decks:

Unfortunately, neither have reviews either so I'm also not sure about the quality. Most of the recommendations I've seen are for 1,000-5,000 word decks so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a smaller deck that works? Just so that I can start and then move up to the big leagues ahah - let me know! Thanks!

Question Modal verb word order?

(A good friend ...) may never be jealous of other friends
darf nie auf andere Freunde eifersüchtig sein

Was revising for Germna GCSE when I saw this translation. Why can't you put eifersuchtig after nie? Can someone give me a general rule for word order with modal verbs?
