Travel Hong Kong Hotel & General Queries.

I was looking for recommendations for stays in Hong Kong for 7 nights in December.
After doing some research, I shortlisted the below hotels, so I was looking to see if anyone has stayed in any of them and can provide a review for it. If not, feel free to suggest other options if you have any; my budget is under 1000HKD per night.

My shortlist :
1. Lodgewood by Nina Hospitality Mong Kok
2. Nina Hotel Tsuen Wan West
3. Nina Hotel Kowloon East
4. Regal Riverside Hotel
5. iclub To Kwa Wan Hotel
6. Metropark Hotel Kowloon Hong Kong
7. Panda Hotel

General Questions:
1. For MRT/buses, do we have to buy the Octopus card or can we use our credit card like in Singapore?
2. How easy is internal transport in Hong Kong?
3. Can one directly get transport from Hong Kong airport to Macau, like ferry or bus, or do we have to go to Hong Kong city for the ferry?

there is a mass disinformation and smear campagin going on across reddit / twitter against HKers, and quite often seeing the same names.

these people are ruthless and will try anything and want us to be on their level.

watch out and call it out.

*edit - added image below for even more context for the constant slander and hate against hkers that a certain group claims they never do but are the only group ever to do so. talk about being rude? what a joke (source: twitter/x)

Discussion Did I make a mistake by moving back to Hong Kong?

• Upvotes

Hello All,

This post might annoy some people, IDK??? All that I say here only pertains to my personal experience so if it annoys you or upsets you please just don't respond and if you would like to respond and offer advice*** please be kind.

Anywho I (30F) am a white woman (this is relevant) who grew up in Hong Kong. I have lived in HK on and off as a teenager and adult and have always loved this city. It felt very inspiring to me as a young person and it still feels like home in many ways. I moved back here in 2023 to do a graduate program and to be closer to my family that still lives here. After moving back to HK my longterm partner and I broke up, it was for the best but was still tough. Since then I have experienced ups and downs in my graduate program/research, but its mostly going well. I have been actively searching for a romantic partner by using dating apps, going to in-person events, joining clubs, but have had no luck making a genuine romantic connection thus far. I would ultimately like to have a kid and ideally want to do this with a partner, but as time passes this seems less and less likely for me to accomplish in this city. I have quite an active social life, but in the past year a few of my best friends have moved to U.S./europe. I feel really lonely living here. I have two years left in my graduate program and I am dreading staying here for that much longer. I am starting to regret my decision to move back here since my life here feels so stagnant as I watch my friends and relatives in other countries pass milestones. I am also starting to worry that my race/cultural background are preventing me from finding someone to share my life with here, even though this hadn't been a problem for me in the past. If you have advice to offer or other perspectives I will gladly hear them. Again please be kind. Thanks for reading!

Questions/ Tips Hackers’ business on public tennis courts?

Hi everyone,

I was chatting with a friend who coaches tennis, and he mentioned something surprising: apparently a group of “hackers” are using bots and scripts to grab all the public tennis court bookings on the Smartplay app right at 7 AM. After that, they resell the slots to coaches for 200 HKD or more.

I’m not sure if this is true or just a rumor, but I’d love to hear what others in the community think.

Has anyone else come across this?

Questions/ Tips Running on old peak road at night?

Hey HK runners, staying in mid levels for a month and wanting to get some hilly runs in, wondering if running up old peak road is safe at night (ie lighted, no wild dogs, etc). Thinking probably 10 pm or so based on schedule. Also if there’s any late night run clubs in the area would love to join!

Event Looking for techno gig buddies I Anyone hitting Bellissimo (Oct 31) or Shi Fu Miz (Nov 14)?

Carl Cox, now in his 60s and still headlining marathon techno sets worldwide, is frequently asked by journalists when he plans to hang it up. His standard reply is classic:

"Techno has no age limit. The kick drum doesn't care what year you were born, it only asks for your energy."

Serious sound systems, heavy basslines, and just dancing hard. There are two killer electronic gigs happening over the next couple of weeks:

1. Bellissimo Halloween (Secret Warehouse), Sat, 31 Oct

Raw industrial warehouse energy, live sets, heavy techno, and bass running from 23:00 till late. Let's meet at the MTR once the secret location drops, grab a quick drink, and walk in together around 11:00 PM. (RA Event)

2. Shi Fu Miz 10 Year Anniversary, Sat, 14 Nov

Tai Tong Ecopark in Yuen Long, open air, noon till late. Grabbing an Early Access pass (entry before 3:00 PM) to catch the daytime sun and outdoor sets. Down to split a cab from Yuen Long MTR, grab a cold drink, and hit the grass. (RA Event)

Looking for gig buddies:

Most of my original rave friends have either emigrated or hung up their dancing shoes, but I still love driving techno, proper sound design, and being on the floor. I'm a Gen X female, and while rolling in solo is fine, catching sets with people on the exact same wavelength hits completely different.

If you have another solid underground night on your radar, let me know. If I'm free and the sound is right, I'm down to join.

Strictly about the music, good company, and dancing hard. Zero drama, no creeps.

Drop a comment or send a DM if you're heading out.

Questions/ Tips Wisdom Teeth Extraction

I have searched and read other posts on here but they seem a little outdated...

I have just been quoted $40k to have my 2 lower wisdom teeth extraction by Nixon Dental. There are complications - cyst, impact and roots entangled in nerves on top of that, biopsy, lab report etc. Their website states $5k so, yeah I'm pretty shocked. I'm aware the complications make the price go up but that's ridiculous!

I initially moved to Nixon because their rates seemed better than the other expat friendly dentists.

I'm open to anything cheaper, whether it be Hong Kong, Shenzhen or Thailand.
I tried Vickong in SZ and they advised me to go to public hospital...

Had a quick look at Thailand and was shocked how much cheaper it is.

I have read mixed reviews about Shenzhen. Some say good and bad things about the same places.

Has anyone have experience, contacts, advice, etc?

Thanks

Questions/ Tips Suitable/Popular dating apps for 80+ and 50+ age groups in HK

Asking on behalf of some people. Does anyone know of legitimate and well-working online (or offline) dating platforms that age groups of 80+ in HK might be using? Or 55+ age groups? I can manage it for them to avoid scammers.

Already using coffee meets bagel for 55+ age group.

Would appreciate hopeful, not pessimistic replies.
